Woodbine Entertainment is pleased to welcome and recognize Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance and LongRun Thoroughbred Retirement Society as part of the third annual Aftercare Alliance Day, this Sunday, October 8, at Woodbine Racetrack.
Representatives from Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance will present the winning trophy for the Nearctic Stakes, and LongRun Thoroughbred Retirement Society representatives will do the same for the Algonquin Stakes.
In 2022, the International Forum for the Aftercare of Racehorses recognized Woodbine's efforts to bring attention and support Thoroughbred aftercare at its annual conference.
“Woodbine is extremely proud to once again be hosting LongRun and the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance on our annual Aftercare Alliance Day,” said Tim Lawson, Woodbine's Director of Thoroughbred Racing. “We are grateful for the contributions of both organizations to the Thoroughbred racing industry and its equine athletes. From horse people to racetrack operators, it is our obligation to ensure prosperous and healthy retirements for the animals we owe so much to.”
Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance accredits, inspects, and awards grants to approved aftercare organizations. Since 2012, the organization has granted more than $28.1 million (US) to accredited aftercare organizations, and 15,500 horses have been retrained, rehomed, or retired by accredited organizations.
LongRun Thoroughbred Retirement Society, founded in 1999, provides care to retired racehorses on their farm in Hillsburgh, Ontario and works to find them new homes. With the help of donations and support from the Ontario racing community, LongRun has found new adoptive homes for more than 1,000 retired Thoroughbreds.
Also on Sunday, Woodbine's stakes-filled race card is highlighted by the $750,000 Grade 1 E.P. Taylor Stakes and the $750,000 Grade 1 Canadian International. This year is the 50th anniversary of Secretariat winning the Canadian International, the final race of his remarkable career. In celebration, guests are welcome to visit the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame's Secretariat exhibit located on the 3rd floor of the Woodbine grandstand from October 5-8. Entrance is free of charge.
