UAE Oaks: Shahama Remains Undefeated, Earns 50 Kentucky Oaks Points

Shahama extended her unbeaten record to four in the Grade 3 UAE Oaks at Meydan in Dubai on Friday.

Fawzi Nass' filly missed the break, faced plenty of kickback and had to circle the whole field, but was still far too good for her six rivals, beating the promising Arabian Gazelles (Mastery) by two lengths. Minwah (Cupid) finished third, followed by Uchchaihshravas.

She might have done it the hard way, but jockey Adrie De Vries is undaunted in his belief in the daughter of Munnings, bred in Kentucky by SF Bloodstock LLC and purchased from consignor Eddie Woods at the OBS April sale of 2-year-olds in training for $425,000.

“She was very upset today because of the screen, the music, [the start being in] the straight,” he said. “She jumped a bit awkward because she was sitting down in the gate.

“It was a little bit awkward as there were a few horses who couldn't bring me to the leader, so I had to go wide to get her out of the kickback, but she did it very easy.”

The UAE Oaks is an official qualifying points race on the road to the Kentucky Oaks, awarding 50 points to the winner, 20 for second, 10 for third and five for fourth.
