Twilight Gleaming Scratched From Saratoga’s Coronation Cup

Twilight Gleaming, the winner of last year's Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint, was scratched from Friday's Coronation Cup at Saratoga Race Course by trainer Wesley Ward, BloodHorse reports.

Ward said the reason for scratch originated from her morning gallop on July 10, when the exercise rider tightened the horse's girth too tightly before going out to the track, resulting in some inflammation.

Though the inflammation knocked Twilight Gleaming off her training schedule enough to warrant the scratch, Ward said the filly is fine now. She will breeze on July 17, and point toward a race later in the Saratoga meet. Ward trains the filly for Stonestreet Stables.

The Coronation Cup, a 5 1/2-furlong turf race for 3-year-old fillies, would have been Twilight Gleaming's third start of the year. The daughter of Irish stallion National Defense most recently won the listed Mamzelle Overnight Stakes on May 14 at Churchill Downs.

In addition to her Breeders' Cup score, Twilight Gleaming's juvenile campaign was highlighted by a victory in the Prix de la Vallee d'Auge in France, and a runner-up effort in the Group 2 Queen Mary Stakes during the prestigious Royal Ascot meeting in England.
