Arcangelo moved up to to the No. 2 spot on the NTRA Top Thoroughbred Poll following his one-length victory Aug. 26 under Javier Castellano in the Grade 1 Travers Stakes at Saratoga Race Course in upstate New York. The Arrogate colt, owned by Blue Rose Farm and trained by Jena Antonucci, became the first 3-year-old male to register two G1 victories in 2023, having won the Belmont Stakes in his previous start.
In winning the Travers, Arcangelo defeated a top field that included four other G1 winners, including Kentucky Derby winner Mage, Florida Derby winner and reigning 2-year-old champion Forte, Preakness winner National Treasure, and Blue Grass Stakes winner Tapit Trice.
Arcangelo, previously ranked 15th in the poll, received more first-place votes (21) than top-ranked Cody's Wish (6), but the latter edged Arcangelo in overall points, 292 to 290.
Three others moved into the top 10 with big victories at Saratoga last week: G1 Ballerina winner Echo Zulu (4th), G1 Forego winner Gunite (6th), and G1 Personal Ensign winner Idiomatic (9th). Elite Power fell from first to third in the poll after finishing second in the Forego.
This marks week 31 of the 2023 NTRA Top Thoroughbred Poll conducted by the National Thoroughbred Racing Association (NTRA), covering racing performances through August 27. Voting is conducted by national media.
The Top Thoroughbred poll represents horses competing for Horse of the Year. The Top Thoroughbred Poll concludes on Tuesday, Nov. 7, following the Breeders' Cup World Championships.
