The draw was made for Sunday's G1 Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe on Thursday morning, with connections of the defending champion Torquator Tasso (Ger) (Adlerflug {Ger}) suffering a hammer blow by being handed stall 18 in the mile-and-a-half monument. Of the other key contenders, Alpinista (GB) (Frankel {GB}) fared far better in six, Luxembourg (Ire) (Camelot {GB}) is in eight, Onesto (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) is in 11, next to Japan's chief hope Titleholder (Jpn) (Duramente {Jpn}) in 10 and Vadeni (Fr) (Churchill {Ire}) drew two.
Other than Gestut Auenquelle's 2021 hero, remarkably it looked like a draw which made a race of two halves, with the majority of the race's favourites according to the bookmakers in the lower half of the draw which is oh-so-important here. Even the Derby winners Do Deuce (Jpn) (Heart's Cry {Jpn}) and Westover (GB) (Frankel {GB}) had the fortunes in their favour drawn in three and seven respectively. Torquator Tasso was drawn 12 last year, but the fact remains that when the great race has been run on the soft ground that is inevitable on Sunday in recent times only one of the true greats Treve (Fr) (Motivator {GB}) was able to overcome from stall 15 in 2013.
