While there will be no suspense when undefeated Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Classic winner Flightline is crowned 2022 Horse of the Year, some of the divisional awards to be presented at the 52nd annual Eclipse Awards Jan. 26 will be more contentious.
The Eclipse Awards will be held for the first time at The Breakers in Palm Beach, Fla., with cocktails and a red carpet event starting at 6 p.m. ET and dinner and awards show following from 7-10 p.m. FanDuel TV will televise the awards and will also broadcast the announcement of the divisional finalists on Jan. 7 at 11:30 a.m. ET.
With voting closed earlier this week, Andrew Champagne, handicapper for the Saratogian newspaper's Pink Sheet each summer, joins Ray Paulick and bloodstock editor Joe Nevills to discuss the pros and cons of some of the contenders for divisional awards.
Among the more hotly debated races is the Eclipse Award for 3-year-old males, where Taiba stands out as a three-time Grade 1 winner but Epicenter seems to hold sway for his consistency throughout the year, finishing second in the first two legs of the Triple Crown and winning the G1 Travers at Saratoga.
