Goffs February Sale Concludes Online As Lockdown Continues

The delayed Goffs February Sale concluded on Thursday with Part 2, a session of 84 short yearlings. The difficulties presented by offering young stock in an online format were highlighted by a large number of withdrawals from the original catalogue of 228, and a clearance rate of 42%.

The 35 horses to have found a buyer returned an average price of €10,311 and median of €8,000, and they added €360,900 to the overall tally for the sale which had to undergo both date and format changes.

“Selling weanlings in March without proper viewings was never going to be ideal but circumstances dictated that was the only option if we were to hold the sale,” said Goffs group chief executive Henry Beeby.

“When we were forced to further delay it by the latest Level 5 lockdown being extended we considered simply cancelling and directing the entries to the yearling sales in the autumn. However, several vendors made contact to implore us to give them an outlet so we staged today as a service to those who wished to present their weanlings to the market.”

The five bestsellers represented both codes at the opposite end of the distance spectrum. Ballinaroone Stud's colt by popular National Hunt sire Walk In The Park (Ire) (lot 506) led the way at €35,000. The son of the unraced Presenting (GB) mare Charming Present (Ire) is a half-brother to four multiple bumper and hurdle winners and was signed for in the name of Thursday Bloodstock.

Two colts from the first crop of Ascot Gold Cup winner Order Of St George (Ire) were also among the table-toppers, sold for €20,000 apiece to trainer Philip Kirby (lot 367) and to Peter Molony of Rathmore Stud (lot 471).

Among the most in-demand of the Flat-bred stock of the session were fillies by Australian sprinters Exceed And Excel (Aus) and Zoustar (Aus). The former, lot 374, was sold by Mark and Elaine Clarke's Wardstown Stud for €26,000 to BC Bloodstock and is a half-sister to the Chester listed winner Copper Knight (Ire) (Sir Prancealot {Ire}).

The filly from the first European crop of Tweenhills stallion Zoustar (lot 453) hails from a family which has been very much in the news in recent seasons. Her winning dam Tschierschen (Ire) (Acclamation {GB}) is a half-sister to new Shadwell resident and G1 Sussex S. winner Mohaather (GB) (Showcasing {GB}), whose half-sister Roodle (GB) (Xaar {GB}) produced the G1 Queen Anne S. winner Accidental Agent (GB) (Delegator {GB}) for owner/breeder Gaie Johnson Houghton. She was bought from Baroda Stud for €25,000 by Italian trainer Bruno Grizzetti, who also purchased lot 406, a colt by Cotai Glory (GB).

Beeby concluded, “The results are predictably mixed with a clearance rate that speaks volumes but there was some spirited bidding for those that stood out and we are sure that several will be shown to have been value when they are reoffered in a normal yearling sale later in the year. Once again, Goffs Online proved its worth with bids from around the world.

“We now turn our attention to our Timed Online Sale on March 24, after which our fervent hope is that the vaccination programmes in Ireland and the UK will allow a return to some normality as the year progresses and we look forward to welcoming horses and people back to Kildare Paddocks for the Land Rover Sale in June. Following that we are working towards a full programme of Goffs sales throughout the rest of the year on their scheduled dates and in their usual location, here in Kildare.”

Kameko To Stand For £25,000

Kameko (Kitten’s Joy-Sweeter Still {Ire}, by Rock Of Gibraltar {Ire}), who won this year’s G1 2000 Guineas in race record time, will stand for £25,000 at Tweenhills Stud next year.

In addition to the Guineas, Kameko won the G1 Vertem Futurity Trophy at two and the G2 Joel S. on Sept. 25 against elders. He was fourth this summer in the G1 Epsom Derby, G1 Sussex S. and G1 Juddmonte International.

“It was hugely exciting to have Kameko arrive at Tweenhills last night and after a gruelling 40-hour journey from Kentucky; he bounced off the lorry and has been striding around the place this morning like he owns it,” said Tweenhills owner David Redvers. “I feel we have priced him extremely competitively this year and will also be offering a small amount of equity in the horse to breeders. Details are to be released later this week.”

Also available at Tweenhills in 2021 for £25,000 will be Australian sensation Zoustar (Aus), whose first Northern Hemisphere foals arrived this year.

“Zoustar continues to enhance his already heady reputation and it is a real coup for European breeders to have such an exceptional young sire standing here again in 2021,” said Redvers. “The reviews his first crop of Northern Hemisphere foals are receiving match our expectations and I’m really looking forward to seeing his first commercial offerings at the end of the month.”

Havana Gold (GB), whose biggest crop of over 140 yearlings goes into training next year, is available for £7,500, while G1 Sussex S. winner Lightning Spear (GB) will stand for £5,000.

China Horse Club’s Breeding Operation Continues To Branch Out

A new chapter in the evolution of China Horse Club has been written with confirmation that the first yearling produced by one of its American-based Grade 1-winning racehorses is now taking its formative steps towards a racing career.

Yellow Agate, who became the China Horse Club's inaugural Grade 1 winner in the United States, is again blazing a trail for the internationally-minded operation, closing the final loop in a long-standing plan to buy and race elite fillies before breeding them to sell at major markets the world over.

“This is an exciting time for the Club. A long-term plan set in process several years ago is now coming full circle,” said Michael Wallace, chief operating officer for the China Horse Club. “In 2015 we started a plan to selectively purchase quality fillies from major sales around the world. The objective being to develop some of them into Grade 1 winners on the track and, in time, for these Grade 1 winning fillies and mares to become a cornerstone of our breeding operations in major markets.

“That has now happened,” he continued. “Earlier this year we had First Seal's first yearling offered publicly at auction in Australia and this spring we have the first yearling by one of our American stars, Yellow Agate, taking the first steps in his career for his new owners.”

In April, a Snitzel colt out of G1 Flight Stakes winner First Seal topped the 2020 Inglis Easter Yearling Sale, Australia's premier yearling sale, when Coolmore Australia won out with a final bid of $1,800,000 Australian (US$1,315,751). The athletic colt has recently turned two and is in the care of champion trainer Chris Waller.

The Curlin x Yellow Agate colt is currently being broken in at Stonestreet Farm before joining the operation of Hall of Fame trainer Todd Pletcher. Pletcher's record grows season upon season and its achievements with the China Horse Club and partners are representative of this. He trained former G1 Florida Derby winner and now WinStar Farm-based sire Audible, Kentucky Oaks contender Ivy Bell and currently oversees the careers of the stakes-winner Valiance and the above-average Fearless.

Yellow Agate was purchased from the 2015 Keeneland September Yearling Sale and franked that assessment by becoming a Grade 1 winner at just her second start in the 2016 Frizette Stakes. That explosive performance was a career highlight for the athletic bay who joined China Horse Club's U.S.-based breeding operation after an injury setback.

The 2008 Eclipse Horse of the Year, Curlin, was chosen as the first mate for Yellow Agate. In the ensuing years the champion racehorse has continued to build on his imposing record as a sire and there is every reason to be buoyant about this latest prospect by Yellow Agate.

“The Curlin x Yellow Agate yearling is a stunning colt, he really is,” Wallace said. “He has always been highlighted rated in our system and just continue to develop physically. He is a really powerful type who gets over ground well.

“Earlier this year Yellow Agate delivered a filly by Quality Road and she is just exceptional,”Wallace continued. “The mare is doing a wonderful job to China Horse Club. She is the racetrack graduate we hoped for and she is throwing her athletic frame into her progeny and giving them the chance to replicate what she was able to do on the track.”

Yellow Agate was covered again by star stallion Quality Road in March. In Australia, China Horse Club's talismanic First Seal was covered by champion first, second and third-season sire Zoustar earlier this month.

Son Of I Am Invincible Tops Hong Kong International Sale

A gelded son of I Am Invincible (Aus) out of the New Zealand Group 3-placed Utopia (NZ) (High Chaparral {Ire}) stole the limelight at the Hong Kong Jockey Club’s International Sale on July 3, bringing a sale-topping price of HK$7.2-million (US$928,996/£745,519/€826,238) from Sze-to Kin Sun. The bay, who had been a A$1-million purchase from the 2018 Inglis Easter Sale from the Torryburn Stud consignment, is a half-brother to the G1 South Australian Derby winner Volatile Mix (NZ) (Pentire {GB}).

The Australasian-bred offerings found favour at the sale, accounting for the top six prices. Next up was a HK$6.5-million (US$838,677/£673,038/€745,909) son of Zoustar (Aus) bought by Wong Kwong Miu. The NZ$250,000 NZB Ready To Run purchase is out of Volkster (NZ) (Volksraad {GB}), a half-sister to four-time Group 1 winner Volkstok’n’Barrell (NZ) (Tavistock {NZ}).

Bringing HK$6-million (US$774,164/£621,266/€688,531) were sons of Per Incanto (NZ) and Savabeel (Aus) bought respectively by Palluzzi Alessandro and the Seven Heroes Syndicate. The Per Incanto gelding had been a NZ$370,000 Karaka yearling and is out of the G1 Railway S. victress Fleur De Lune (NZ) (Stravinsky). The son of Savabeel, a full-brother to G1 New Zealand Oaks winner Savvy Coup (NZ), had cost NZ$500,000 at Karaka.

While there were seven withdrawals, all 19 lots offered were sold for HK$74,300,000. The average of HK$3,910,526 was up 37% on last year, while the median climbed 42.5% to HK$4,000,000. One more horse was sold last year.

Bill Nader, the Hong Kong Jockey Club’s director of racing business and operations, said, “This was a very good sale, it exceeded our expectations. Overall, we have to be pleased with the results and it might be a good sign for the economy in Hong Kong that things could be rebounding, because the money was with us tonight. The horses presented well and I don’t think anyone was surprised by the sale topper. There was a good mix of pedigrees, I think the buyers had a lot of variety and hopefully there’s some value there for our owners.”
