Justify Colt Yuttitham On The Rise in Japan

10th-Tokyo, Seiryu S. (Allowance), ¥34,530,000 ($253,726), 5-14, 3yo, 1600m, 1:35.8, gd.
YUTTITHAM (JPN) (c, 3, Justify–Zipessa {GISW, $783,550}, by City Zip), dropped his career debut to future SW Perriere (Jpn) (Henny Hughes) last August and was a warm item in his 3-year-old debut off victories in his final two starts of 2022 last December. The 9-10 favorite was forwardly placed after an uneventful beginning and sat a handy fourth into the turn. Traveling very nicely in the hands of Yuga Kawada, the athletic chestnut was pulled out into the long Tokyo straight, was asked for his best about 300 meters from home and never felt a crack of the crop en route to a 2 1/2-length victory over pace-pressing Copano Pasadena (Jpn) (Copano Rickey {Jpn}). Fellow U.S.-bred Wayward Act (Maclean's Music), a runaway debut winner over course and distance just two weeks ago, ran extremely well to be third. Yuttitham is out of the Michael Stidham-trained Zipessa, winner of Keeneland's GI First Lady S. in 2017 who was acquired by Shadai for $1.25 million in foal to Medaglia d'Oro at Keeneland November in 2018. The mare is represented by a 2-year-old colt by Isla Bonita (Jpn) and a yearling filly by Kizuna (Jpn), sire of Sunday's G1 Victoria Mile heroine Songline (Jpn). Zipessa was most recently bred to Lord Kanaloa (Jpn). The next start for Yuttitham is rumored to be the $750,000 Listed Japan Dirt Derby July 12, where he could square off with the likes of Derma Sotogake (Jpn) (Mind Your Biscuits), Mandarin Hero (Jpn) (Shanghai Bobby) and Continuar (Jpn) (Drefong). Sales history: ¥200,000,000 Ylg '21 JRHAJUL. Lifetime Record: 4-3-1-0, $249,544.

Justify Colt Yuttitham Posts Another Impressive Win at Hanshin

6th-Hanshin, ¥14,250,000 ($106,284), Allowance, 2yo, 1800m, 1:53.9, ft.
YUTTITHAM (JPN) (c, 2, Justify–Zipessa {GISW, $783,550}, by City Zip) improved for a debut second at Sapporo Aug. 27 to graduate by eight lengths when last seen over this course and distance Dec. 3 and was a warm item to put them back-to-back in this seasonal finale. Beaten for speed, the flashy chestnut was content to punch the breeze three wide and was poised to strike from the position as they neared the straight. Asked for his best by premiership-winning jockey Yuga Kawada with a furlong and a half to run, Yuttitham opened up with fluid strides and went on to score by three lengths as the 1-2 chalk. Upset winner of the 2017 GI First Lady S. at Keeneland for Empyrean Stables and trainer Michael Stidham, Zipessa was hammered down to Shadai for $1.25 million at the 2018 Keeneland November Sale and was bred to this Triple Crown winner before heading to Japan.  The investment was immediately recouped when Makoto Kaneko–in whose silks the legendary Deep Impact (Jpn) was campaigned–paid ¥200 million for the colt at last year's JRHA Select Sales. Yuttitham has a yearling half-brother by Isla Bonita (Jpn) that fetched ¥76 million ($558,835) at this year's Select Sale and a weanling half-sister by Deep Impact's son Kizuna (Jpn). Zipessa is due to Lord Kanaloa (Jpn) for 2023. Sales history: $1,815,520 Ylg '21 JRHAJUL. Lifetime Record: 3-2-1-0, $$115,019.

Expensive Son of GISW Zipessa Looms Large at Sapporo

In this continuing series, we take a look ahead at US-bred and/or conceived runners entered for the upcoming weekend at the tracks on the Japan Racing Association circuit, with a focus on pedigree and/or performance in the sales ring. Here are the horses of interest for this weekend running at Niigata and Sapporo Racecourses:

Saturday, August 27, 2022
4th-NII, ¥9,900,000 ($73k), Maidens, 3yo, 1800m
NATURE THERAPY (JPN) (c, 3, Union Rags–My Happy Face, by Tiz Wonderful) turned in a useful career debut going Tokyo's one-turn mile May 15, finishing a competitive fourth to Danon Early (Jpn) (Frankel {GB} x Finest City), and gets an extra eighth of a mile to work with for this second go (video, SC 12). The colt's dam won the 2012 GIII Tempted S. after finishing runner-up in that year's GI Frizette S. and was placed in the GI CCA Oaks and GI Test S. as a 3-year-old. My Happy Face was acquired by Katsumi Yoshida with this colt in utero for $425,000 at the 2018 Keeneland November Sale. B-Northern Racing

5th-SAP, ¥13,400,000 ($98k), Newcomers, 2yo, 1700m
YUTTITHAM (JPN) (c, 2, Justify–Zipessa, by City Zip) is the first foal from his dam, who upset the 2017 GI First Lady S. at Keeneland and was knocked down to Shadai Farm for $1.25 million at Keeneland November in 2018. Having failed to produce a foal in 2019, Zipessa was covered by this Triple Crown winner and dropped this colt in early April 2020. The chestnut, who bears a striking resemblance to his sire, was hammered down to Kaneko Makoto Holdings Co. for $1,815,520 at the 2020 JRHA Select Sales. Christophe Lemaire takes the call.
