Zarak’s Village Voice Another For Harrington In The Salsabil

Hot on the heels of Ocean Quest (Ire) (Sioux Nation) tearing up the Listed Irish Stallion Farms EBF Committed S., Village Voice (GB) (Zarak {Fr}–Sensible Way, by Street Sense) brought up a black-type double for the Jessica Harrington stable in Navan's Listed Irish Stallion Farms EBF Salsabil S. Anchored in rear early by Ronan Whelan in the 10-furlong Oaks trial, the 7-1 shot who had been third in the G3 Eyrefield S. at Leopardstown in October was threaded through a gap on the rail to overhaul the 11-10 favourite Jackie Oh (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) 150 yards out and score by 3/4 of a length, with 2 3/4 lengths back to the fellow Harrington-trained pace-setter Foniska (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) in third.

“She loved the going and ground it out well–Jessie's horses couldn't be in better form,” Whelan said. “She was running a big race in the Eyrefield, but got a big bump on the bend and ran out of steam at the end.” Assistant trainer Kate Harrington added, “I'd imagine we will go [G2] Ribblesdale now. It has been a good day and a great tonic for mum.”

The dam Sensible Way (Street Sense) is a daughter of Nasheej (Swain {Ire}), who captured the G2 May Hill S., G3 Fred Darling S. and G3 Sweet Solera S. and was third in the G1 1000 Guineas, G1 Coronation S. and G1 Fillies' Mile. From the family of the G2 Champions Juvenile S. winner and Derby runner-up Madhmoon (Ire) (Dawn Approach {Ire}) and the legendary Seattle Slew, her 2-year-old filly is by French Navy (GB).

Zarak’s Crown Princesse Wins The Cleopatre

Providing another boost to TDN Rising Star Pensee Du Jour (Ire) (Camelot {GB}), Haras de Saint-Julien and Regula Vannod's Crown Princesse (Fr) (Zarak {Fr}–Lovemedo {Fr}, by Zafeen {Fr}) stepped up on two prior efforts to capture Friday's G3 Prix Cleopatre at Saint-Cloud. Four-lengths second to that Fabre giant on debut over 9 1/2 furlongs on Chantilly's Polytrack in February, the Fabrice Chappet-trained homebred went back to the same track, trip and surface to break her maiden last month and entered this 10 1/2-furlong Prix de Diane pointer only as a lukewarm 11-1 shot.

Anchored with one behind early by Ioritz Mendizabal, the chestnut had to wait for room at the top of the straight as the eventual runner-up Elusive Princess (Fr) (Martinborough {Jpn}) ran into a dead end on the rail. In the open in time to get to the front approaching the furlong pole, she stayed on strongly to score by half a length from the unlucky second, with 3/4 of a length back to the long-time leader Heartache Tonight (Fr) (Recorder {GB}) in third.

“You can't really fault this filly since her debut when she was beaten by one with great potential, as she has since proven,” Chappet said. “We will enjoy that, see how she comes out of the race and take it day by day before deciding on her next race. She is not in the [G1 Prix] Saint-Alary, not in the Diane. We shall see.”

Pedigree Notes

Crown Princesse's dam Lovemedo, who was runner-up in the Listed Prix la Sorellina, is a half-sister to the Listed Prix de Bagatelle winner Mary's Precedent (Fr) (Storming Home {GB}) who produced another Sorellina runner-up in Mary's France (Fr) (Acclamation {GB}). The family features the G1 Prix
de l'Arc de Triomphe and G1 Prix du Jockey Club hero Sottsass (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}) and his half-sister, the multiple grade I-winning Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf heroine and champion Sistercharlie (Ire) (Myboycharlie {Ire}). Lovemedo's 2-year-old filly by Meshaheer is named Love Her (Fr).

Saturday Preview: The Flat Is Back

Ireland's Flat action may have already started and France's has been rumbling on for several days, but for many the real beginning to the season on the level is Doncaster's Lincoln H. on a Saturday which wrests the attention from the national hunt in no uncertain terms. Whether there is a horse of the calibre of Addeybb (Ire) (Pivotal {GB}) lurking in the prestigious mile handicap remains to be seen, but there is a strong vibe surrounding another member of the William Haggas tribe in 'TDN Rising Star' Al Mubhir (GB) (Frankel {GB}), who is the mount of Doncaster specialist Andrea Atzeni now operating as a freelance in a 2023 that will define his future riding career. “I thought he was going to be a good horse,” Haggas said of Al Mubhir, who had looked pattern-class all over when entered in the G3 Craven S. 12 months ago. “He won his maiden very nicely at Newmarket as a two-year-old and then I thought he was going to be a nice three-year-old. Then he was very disappointing. He was pretty unruly as well and lost his way a bit, but he finished the season well. I don't know how good he is, but he's always been a nice horse and I think he's in good shape.”

Donny Delights…

Also at Doncaster are the Listed Cammidge Trophy, which sees the return of the still-unexposed G2 Sandy Lane S. winner El Caballo (GB) (Havana Gold {Ire}) returning for the first time since beating only two home as the joint-favourite for the G1 Commonwealth Cup, and the Listed Doncaster Mile while the 2-year-olds assembled for the opening Brocklesby Conditions S.

Plat Du Jour…

'TDN Rising Star' Pensee Du Jour | Scoop Dyga

It is at Saint-Cloud that the high-stakes action takes place, however, with Andre Fabre seeking a third straight success with TDN Rising Star Pensee Du Jour (Ire) (Camelot {GB}) in the G3 Prix Penelope. Staged over the 10 1/2-furlong trip of the Prix de Diane, the renowned trial has surprisingly not been won by a subsequent heroine of that Classic since Pensee Du Jour 's distant relative Pawneese (Ire), the Wildensteins' champion of 1976. Fabre already holds the record of nine in this and the way the Ballymore Thoroughbred representative went through her maiden at Chantilly in February and the Listed Prix Rose de Mai here early this month suggests that number 10 is imminent.

Come On, Get Happy…

Ballydoyle have begun the year with gusto and the presence of two of the stable's runners in the Penelope is certain to be an indicator of what is to come as Rosegreen look more to France than ever before. Ryan Moore is here and not on the aforementioned favourite for the Lincoln, so it is up to another daughter of Camelot in Be Happy (Ire) to make up for that missed opportunity. Impressive at Cork on debut in September, the relative of the Prix du Jockey Club hero Anabaa Blue (GB) and of the great Urban Sea was only fifth in The Curragh's G3 Staffordstown Stud S. the following month but this is a new year and her rider is quietly confident. “Be Happy will enjoy the expected soft ground and she is a filly we like,” he said. “She probably didn't get the run of the race at the Curragh and this longer trip will suit.” Jean-Claude Rouget saddles Denford Stud's dual Cagnes-Sur-Mer scorer Iznik (Fr) (Zarak {Fr}), while Gainesway Ventures' Arqana December purchase Speirling Beag (Ire) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}) adds weight having won Leopardstown's G3 Eyrefield S. and been in front of Be Happy when third in the Staffordstown.

Old Habits Die Hard…

In the G3 Prix Edmond Blanc, Al Asayl France's stalwart The Revenant (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) has everything in his favour as he bids for a third renewal following his win in the course-and-distance Listed Prix Altipan three weeks ago, with the G3 Prix Perth one-two Facteur Cheval (Ire) (Ribchester {Ire}) and Tribalist (GB) (Farhh {GB}) and the 2021 G1 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere and G1 Criterium International hero Angel Bleu (Fr) (Dark Angel {Ire}) offering stern opposition. Unbeaten at this venue in five starts on ground that rode softer than good, the 8-year-old former QEII hero still sets the standard in this type of company.

Zarak Share Leads The Way At Tattersalls Online January Sale

Aga Khan Studs' sire Zarak (Fr) continued to prove popular at the sales, as Tom Goff's Blandford Bloodstock shelled out 350,000gns on behalf of Chasemore Farm for a 1/50th share (lot 63) in the rising sire star to top the Tattersalls Online January Sale on Thursday.

The son of Arc heroine Zarkava (Ire) (Zamindar) has gone from strength to strength with his progeny in the past few years. Among his many stakes winners are group winners Purplepay (Fr), Sirjan (Ger), Baiykara (Fr), Lavello (Ire), and Lizaid (Ger), while La Parisienne (Fr) was runner-up in the G1 Prix de Diane.

Goff said, “I'm delighted to have secured the share in Zarak on behalf of Chasemore Farm. Andrew and Jane Black have a number of mares that they would like to send to France to be covered by Zarak over the next few seasons so, after some discussion, the decision was to give it a go.

“The sire has done tremendously well so far. At 11% stakes winners to runners and 68% winners to runners to date, his statistics sit comfortably with Dubawi (Ire)'s other successful sons Night Of Thunder (Ire) and New Bay (GB) at the same stage. In addition to his stakes winners, Zarak has also sired La Parisienne (Fr), who was second in the [G1] Prix de Diane, so I'm sure it's only a matter of time before he sires his first Group 1 winner.

“The fact that he is managed by Georges Rimaud at Haras de Bonneval is another massive plus for me personally. We have first-hand experience of their stallion syndicates–they are absolutely blue chip and are exceptionally well managed.”

The other lot to make six figures was a breeding right in one of last year's star first-crop sires, Whitsbury Manor Stud's Havana Grey (GB) (lot 66). Heather Raw came out the winning bidder at 105,000gns. The grey already has 16% stakes performers to runners, highlighted by group winners Rumstar (GB), Eddie's Boy (GB), and Lady Hollywood (GB), as well as listed winners Shouldvebeenaring (GB) and Cuban Mistress (GB).

Other breeding rights also went under the hammer, with one in Time Test (GB) (lot 62) making 32,000gns to WebBloodstock, and Stephen Hillen secured a breeding right to Harry Angel (Ire) (lot 65) for 30,000gns.

Overall, 31 of the 67 lots sold for a gross of 656,500gns. The average was 21,177gns and the median was 2,600gns.
