Night of Thunder’s Highfield Princess Lights Up York

Unexposed over six furlongs, Highfield Princess (Fr) (Night of Thunder {Ire}–Pure Illusion {Ire}, by Danehill) stormed on to the sprinting scene with an emphatic success in Wednesday's G2 1895 Duke of York Clipper Logistics S. Trading strides with the ultimately-disappointing Dragon Symbol (GB) (Cable Bay {Ire}) until after halfway, the John Quinn-trained mare who was race-hardened after four outings so far this year put that 11-4 joint-favourite to bed soon after.  Despite drifting left, the 11-2 shot was still able to hand Spycatcher (Ire) (Vadamos {Fr}) a 2 3/4-length beating, with the other joint-favourite Minzaal (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}) a further length away in third. “I don't know how the boss does it, but he seems to get horses to progress throughout their careers,” jockey Jason Hart said. “I had her in a lovely rhythm, then at halfway she lit up but when I pressed the button I couldn't believe how well she quickened up.”

Unraced at two, Highfield Princess had well and truly made up for the lost time by the time she entered Royal Ascot's Buckingham Palace H. last June with 14 runs under her belt. Powering to success at 18-1 in that seven-furlong contest, the bay was sent black-type hunting over that trip and responded with a string of solid efforts including a win in the Listed Queen Charlotte Fillies' S. on Chelmsford's Polytrack in July and a second to the high-class Space Blues (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) in the G2 City of York S. at this venue's Ebor festival in August. Her only two runs at shorter resulted in a sixth in the G1 QPICO British Champions Sprint S. and a second in a five-furlong conditions event on Wolverhampton's Tapeta Mar. 19, after which she had returned to seven to win Newcastle's All-Weather Fillies' and Mares' Championships Conditions S. Apr. 15.

John Quinn, who was en route to the Arqana Sales as the race was playing out, now has his sights set on the G1 Platinum Jubilee S. at the Royal meeting at which she broke through last term. “I think we'll probably wait now until the six-furlong race at Ascot, that's the obvious next race for her,” he said. “What has been really pleasing to see of late is that if anything she's getting quicker, they were never going too quick for her there.”

She may not be re-opposed in the June 18 feature by the second, with Karl Burke saying of the improved Spycatcher, “He is actually in the group two at the Curragh on Sunday week [the Greenlands], but I'd imagine that will come too quick and will be a very hot race. We're not entered at Royal Ascot and I think the ground would be the key to him really with his feet–a bit of juice in the ground is perfect.” Owen Burrows said of Minzaal, “The winner drifted away from him, so he didn't have anything then to take him into the race. He's having a nice blow and I'm sure he'll come forward plenty from that. Like everybody we've been waiting to get some serious work in on the grass, so hopefully the rain will allow for that and we can move forwards to Ascot.”

Highfield Princess, who is named after John Quinn's stable, is a half to the talented six-furlong performer Cardsharp (GB) (Lonhro {Aus}), who captured the G2 July S. and Listed Cathedral S. and was placed in the G1 Middle Park S., G2 Gimcrack S., G2 Richmond S. and G2 Norfolk S. The dam Pure Illusion (Ire) (Danehill) is a daughter of the G3 Princess Elizabeth S. scorer Saintly Speech (Southern Halo), who is also the second dam of the G3 Park Express S. and G3 C. L. Weld Park S. winner Chrysanthemum (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}) whose son Cunco (Ire) was Frankel's first 2-year-old winner before going on to take the G3 Sandown Classic Trial. Pure Illusion's 2-year-old colt by Aclaim (Ire) is named Highfield Viking (GB).

Knavesmire Action!

She may be named after a key character in a Marx Brothers film, but Emily Upjohn's “day at the races” is no laughing matter on Wednesday as the daughter of Sea the Stars (Ire) is concerned as she goes through the gears again in York's G3 Musidora S. at York. The Gosdens' latest 'TDN Rising Star' has already shown form good enough to make her presence felt in most renewals of the Epsom Classic and barring surprises here will be on the Downs with bells on on the first Friday in June. This extended 10-furlong test on the flat Knavesmire was actually threatening to become irrelevant as an Oaks trial prior to the romp of Snowfall (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) 12 months ago and it is a boon that it has attracted the current ante-post favourite. John Gosden sees her as more than just a now horse and said, “She's one of those fillies who will get better with age, because she certainly has the scope and frame to do it.”

Family Ties

In 2014, Madame Chiang (GB) (Archipenko) emerged on top in the Musidora for Kirsten Rausing and David Simcock and so the circle is complete as her daughter Ching Shih (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) takes part in her race for the same connections. She is every bit as unexposed as anything entered in the Oaks at present based on her four-length success in a mile Newbury novice in October. “She doesn't look anything like her mother, but she will probably be campaigned down a similar line,” Simcock commented. “Is Ching Shih similar? Probably the biggest similarity is she's going to be better when she gets softer ground. She is a relentless galloper.”

Setting the Tone

It's another big week for Shadwell and the G1 QIPCO British Champions Sprint S. third Minzaal (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}) could set things rolling in the G2 1895 Duke of York Clipper Logistics S. on the card. Owen Burrows has been patient with the 2020 G2 Gimcrack S. winner and this year could be when he sees the reward for it. “Physically, he has really strengthened up this year and I've had a good preparation with him,” he said. “Obviously he was impressive in the Gimcrack at York and I think that proved he was certainly a quality horse.” After all the twists and turns of fate against Yoshiro Kubota's 'TDN Rising Star' Dragon Symbol (GB) (Cable Bay {Ire}) last term, a win on this debut for the Roger Varian stable could springboard him to new heights where he can leave all the bad fortune long in the past.

Stradivarius and ‘Moon’ To Return At York

High-class stayer Stradivarius (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) and G1 Cazoo Derby hopeful Reach For The Moon (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) will both be in action at York in mid-May, co-trainer John Gosden revealed. The former holds an entry in the G2 Paddy Power Yorkshire Cup S. on May 13. After winning the G2 Doncaster Cup S. in September, the Bjorn Nielsen-owned chestnut ran second in the G1 Prix du Cadran at ParisLongchamp a month later, and finished his season with a third in the G2 British Champions Long Distance Cup. Her Majesty The Queen's Reach For The Moon is a winner of the G3 Solario S. at Sandown on Aug. 21, and he was a good second in the G2 Champagne S. at Doncaster on Sept. 11. His next engagement will be the G2 Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Dante S. at York on May 12.

John Gosden said, “They are all fine. Stradivarius will go to York. Both of them will be pointing towards York. Stradivarius for the Yorkshire Cup and Reach For The Moon to the Dante. They are going all right at this stage. It is early days.”

British EBF 2YO Series Outlined for ’22

Allocating an additional £100,000 to the total prize fund, the European Breeders' Fund announced the British EBF 2yo Series will offer £200,000 in 2022. The series of races was designed to provide high-value end of season goals for offspring by middle market stallions. The finals, which are staged at Group 1 independent racecourses, will be held between early September and October. Goodwood and York both pledged the full financial support; match-funding the £100,000 British EBF prize money contribution.

A full list of qualifiers can be accessed here. Race conditions for the Finals at Goodwood and York can be accessed here.

“With a reduction in racing in 2020, came a small surplus of funds for the British EBF. The Trustees were keen to make sure that this money was re-focused to do the maximum good it could for the industry,” said Simon Sweeting, Chairman British EBF. “This series not only provides tantalizing prize money targets but also aims to add the EBF's weight to encouraging owners to re-invest at the yearling sales. With no early closing stages and over 100 chances to qualify a horse, we hope that owners and trainers will support this new initiative. We are looking forward to 2 highly competitive finals in the Autumn.”
