Dark Angel’s Real World Too Strong In The Strensall

York's Saturday action kicked off in style, with the apple of Saeed bin Suroor's eye Real World (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) again demonstrating his raw quality as his love affair with the impressive Marco Ghiani continued in the G3 Sky Bet and Symphony Group Strensall S. Dynamic in the June 16 Royal Hunt Cup at a mile and the 10-furlong Listed Steventon S. at Newbury July 17, Godolphin's progressive and as-yet untested 4-year-old was exposed on the wing early racing two lengths off the pace. Carting his rookie jockey to the front two out, the even-money favourite looked vulnerable for a few strides but stayed on again when asked a serious question to power to a 1 1/2-length success from the rock-solid 2018 winner Lord Glitters (Fr) (Whipper). “He might go France or Newmarket next, but his final race is going to be the [Oct. 16 G1] Queen Elizabeth II [at Ascot],” his trainer declared. “We took him to Dubai this year, but he was still weak. He's a nice horse who needs to improve, but every time he has run he has done and will be better next year.”

Real World is now unbeaten in three starts on turf and on Polytrack, with his sole start on that artificial surface coming on debut at Chelmsford in late October. Conversely unable to score on four outings on Meydan's dirt this winter, the imposing bay had managed a third placing in the Feb. 18 Listed Curlin S. but it was not until he stepped onto Royal Ascot's hallowed grass that he showed his true wares with a scarcely-believable 4 3/4-length romp in the always-competitive Royal Hunt Cup. The dam Nafura (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) is also responsible for this year's Listed Cheshire Oaks winner Dubai Fountain (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}), who was also runner-up in the G2 May Hill S. at two. She is a half-sister to three group winners headed by the stable's G1 Prix Jacques le Marois and G1 Prix du Moulin de Longchamp-winning sire Librettist (Danzig) and the brilliant G1 Queen Anne S. hero and sire Dubai Destination (Kingmambo).

The third dam Mysteries (Seattle Slew), who was third in the G3 Musidora S., produced three black-type winners including the G1 July Cup and G1 Prix de l'Abbaye de Longchamp hero and proven sire Agnes World (Danzig) and the Japanese champion sprinter Hishi Akebono (Woodman). She is also the ancestress of the GI Breeders' Cup Mile winner Tourist (Tiznow). Also connected to another of this stable's luminaries in the G1 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere winner Royal Marine (Ire) (Raven's Pass), Nafura has the 2-year-old colt Home City (Ire) (Profitable {Ire}) who was off the mark last week.

Bungle Inthejungle’s Winter Power Overwhelms Nunthorpe Rivals

Friday's G1 Coolmore Wootton Bassett Nunthorpe S. was always going to be about raw speed and the 3-year-old filly Winter Power (Ire) (Bungle Inthejungle {GB}) qualified more than most in that regard having displayed it in abundance in the May 13 Listed Westow S. and July 10 Listed City Walls S. over this flat York five. In front of all bar the furiously-fast Golden Pal (Uncle Mo) until the two-furlong pole, King Power's 9-1 shot left that US raider for dead there and hit the line under Silvestre de Sousa with 1 1/4 lengths to spare over the generously-priced fellow Northern-trained Emaraaty Ana (GB) (Shamardal). Dragon Symbol (GB) (Cable Bay {Ire}) stayed on to place yet again at this level, half a length away as the 9-4 favourite Suesa (Ire) (Night of Thunder {Ire}) found it all happening a touch too fast 3/4 of a length further back in fourth. “She's a wonderful filly,” commented trainer Tim Easterby of the famous clan renowned for decades in this Yorkshire area. “The best ones have that kick, that bit extra and she has it. She doesn't take any training, she just lobs around at the back of the string and has done so well and thrived late summer. This spring, she was looking a bit light and backward but she's put on so much weight and looks tremendous now. She has relaxed and got great confidence in herself.”

The Easterbys are part of the fabric in these parts, with Tim's Habton Grange Stables in Malton built up by his father Peter whose most high-profile horse was the York legend Sea Pigeon who defied top weight of 10 stones to land this meeting's feature Ebor H. in 1979. While his colourful uncle Mick enjoyed glory in this in 1976 with Lochnager (GB), the current licence-holder at Habton Grange had yet to collect in the race that means so much to the family with the filly Pipalong (Ire) (Pips Pride {GB}) third to Nuclear Debate (Geiger Counter) in the millennium edition. By the time Winter Power was having her eighth 2-year-old start in the Listed Harry Rosebery S. at Ayr in September, she was boasting just two wins in a nursery and novice at Redcar and Ripon but it was then that she took off with a black-type breakthrough before storming to a three-length success in Newmarket's G3 Cornwallis S. the following month.

Winter Power's dynamic displays in the Westow and City Walls here this term came either side of a ninth when setting off too fast in the G1 King's Stand S. at Royal Ascot June 15, but this was a contrasting display of ideally-measured speed over Britain's minimum trip. Coming up the centre on her own as the fellow Northern-based Liberty Beach (GB) (Cable Bay {Ire}) kept Golden Pal honest away to her left, the bay was always way beyond the reach of Suesa who was on the fastest ground she had encountered and almost every rival was under the pump after as little as two furlongs. Dragon Symbol was one of them, but he has shown on more than one occasion that he never gives up the chase and he was only robbed of another silver medal late on by the 40-1 shot Emaraaty Ana who has been revived by a Hamilton conditions win at the end of last month. “She's unbelievably fast and when she hits the gates right she's really good,” Silvestre de Sousa said. “She did that here first time this year and I thought I hadn't sat on anything as fast as her.”

“She showed a fantastic turn of foot in the Cornwallis last year and she's just got something special,” Easterby said. “There is no scientific reason why I feel she'll get better, but it's in the way she's developed so much. She is switched off in her brain and chilled out–she gets down to it with no issues. At Ascot, she just went a crazy pace and it's no use doing it all in the first part of the race. She's in the [Oct. 3 G1 Prix de l'] Abbaye [at ParisLongchamp] and I'll speak to [King Power racing manager] Alastair [Donald] and the team and see what they want to do now. She'll need a bit of time after a group 1 race like that, even though she's won nicely. I wouldn't want to get her caught up in the logistical problems that are involved with travelling at this time, so I'm not sure about the Breeders' Cup.”

Emaraaty Ana's trainer Kevin Ryan said of the runner-up, who took the 2018 G2 Gimcrack S. at this meeting, “The Hamilton race gave him confidence. Passing the two-pole I knew they'd gone hard and it was a question of if they could keep it up as I knew he'd stay on strong. Fair do's to the winner, she's incredible. She probably hit a brick wall, but it was too close to the line for us. Ours is a very good horse. This fellow is as good as I've had. He's probably a better six-furlong horse, we've run him over five to get him to relax but it leaves the rest of the season open. He's probably a bit ground-dependent and needs it quick, he's in the Abbaye which might suit but he's also in at Haydock [in the Sept. 4 G1 Sprint Cup] and Champions Day which could come up as bogs so we'll see. He's only young, he'll get better.”

Wesley Ward was unable to shake the Nunthorpe hoodoo and said of Golden Pal, who faded to be seventh, “Frankie said he was waiting for the turn. I made no secret of it that I was very confident coming into the race, but the winner ran a tremendous race and we're disappointed. I think so highly of this colt of course I'm disappointed, it just wasn't his day. I still think he's a tremendous racehorse. We'll see if any answers come up when we get him back and see what we find. From everything I've seen of this colt, he's just awesome so when he runs a race like today it's a head scratcher. We'll see what transpires, I haven't lost faith in him.”

Winter Power is a half-sister to the Listed Land O'Burns Fillies' S. winner Hay Chewed (Ire) (Camacho {GB}) and the Listed Redcar Two-Year-Old Trophy runner-up Flying Sparkle (Ire) (Fast Company {Ire}). The dam Titian Saga (Ire) (Titus Livius {Fr}) is kin to the dam of the G2 Ridgewood Pearl S. winner and G1 Irish 1000 Guineas third Devonshire (Ire) (Fast Company {Ire}) and to the fellow Harry Rosebery scorer Hurryupharriet (Ire) (Camacho {GB}), who in turn is responsible for the Listed Kachy S. winner Exalted Angel (Fr) (Dark Angel {Ire}). Her 2-year-old filly by Fast Company (Ire) was a £150,000 purchase by Joe Foley at the Goffs Orby Yearling Sale eight days before Winter Power's Cornwallis romp, while her yearling full-sister to the winner is catalogued in the upcoming Orby.

Mehmas’s Lusail Wins The Gimcrack

Defying a three-pound penalty for his success in the G2 July S., Lusail (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}) continued Al Shaqab Racing's purple patch with the juveniles in Friday's G2 Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Gimcrack S. at York. Always perfectly placed behind the pace-setters by Pat Dobbs, the 7-2 second favourite stayed on past Gis a Sub (Ire) (Acclamation {GB}) just inside the final furlong en route to a 1 1/4-length success from that long-time leader, with Twilight Jet (Ire) (Twilight Son {GB}) 3/4 of a length behind in third. “He's very babyish and we haven't got to the bottom of him yet,” the winning rider said. “I got to the front about half a furlong earlier than I wanted. He's quick enough for six, but seven is not a problem for him either and he's so laid-back. He's a nicer type of a horse than Mehmas with a lot more scope. This guy has everything you need.”

Trading at 28-1 when springing a surprise on his debut over this course and distance May 13, Lusail ran into two smart opponents in Angel Bleu (Fr) (Dark Angel {Ire}) and Khunan (GB) (Twilight Son {GB}) when third behind the subsequent G2 Vintage S. winner and G2 Richmond S. runner-up over this trip on soft ground at Pontefract 15 days later. Making all over seven furlongs at Newmarket June 19, the bay returned to the latter venue to upstage Asymmetric (Ire) (Showcasing {GB}) in the G2 July S. and after that rival took the G2 Richmond S. and the fourth Ebro River (Ire) (Galileo Gold {GB}) the G1 Phoenix S. the form of that July 8 contest was looking rock-solid. With the operation already boasting this stable's G3 Molecomb S. winner Armor (GB) (No Nay Never) and Ebro River, the hardest task may be keeping the trio apart from here.

Richard Hannon said, “He's never done much at home, but often I find they are the best 2-year-olds. He wasn't there in his coat even in the July Stakes and didn't look great that day, but that's just him. Of all our 2-year-olds, he is the one with the most scope and he's going to be a big powerful horse next year. He's already got seven and I'd love to take him to the [G1] Dewhurst [at Newmarket Oct. 9], but he's in the [G1] Middle Park [at Newmarket Sept. 25] and the [G1 Prix] Jean-Luc Lagardere [at ParisLongchamp Oct. 3] so they are all possibilities. He's done it both ways, as in the July he was up with two others who dropped out and he was the only one who kept going and today he had a lead. That's hugely encouraging and he's an amenable horse and lovely to have anything to do with. Him getting beaten at Pontefract might have been the making of him, as we didn't go to Royal Ascot on the back of that defeat but he won't go on soft at all. He didn't go to Goodwood for that reason and that was the right decision. The Guineas is the long-term objective and he's big and strong enough, so that's the end-game. He's doing this in spite of his size, as he's a big physical.”

A useful type for Alan Jarvis, Lusail's dam Diaminda (Ire) (Diamond Green {Fr}) was tried in the 2013 G1 1000 Guineas won by this stable's Sky Lantern (Ire) (Red Clubs {Ire}) but trailed in last and was retired with her best effort being a fourth in the Listed Dick Poole Fillies' S. over this trip. She is a half to Fayr Jag (Ire) (Fayruz {GB}), one of man-of-the-moment Tim Easterby's best as the winner of the G1 Golden Jubilee S., G3 Ridgewood Pearl S., G3 Chipchase S. and G3 Hackwood S. Her daughter of Kodiac (GB) is due to sell at the upcoming Tattersalls October Yearling Sale Book 1, while she also has a filly foal by Cotai Glory (GB).

No Doubting Stradivarius In The Lonsdale Cup

With the drying ground ruling out the G1 Goodwood Cup hero Trueshan (Fr) (Planteur {Ire}), Friday's G2 Weatherbys Hamilton Lonsdale Cup at York was teed up perfectly for Stradivarius (Ire) (Sea the Stars {Ire}) to register an inspiring third success in this marathon. Open to questioning following his fourth in the G1 Gold Cup at Royal Ascot June 17, Bjorn Nielsen's staying star was settled in second early by Frankie Dettori as The Grand Visir (GB) (Frankel {GB}) set off in isolation. Joined by Spanish Mission (Noble Mission {GB}) approaching two out as they loomed on the front end, William Buick had the upper hand for much of the rest of the distance and looked likely to prevail until the final yards. It was then that the 4-6 favourite was lifted by the crowd to give extra and outstay his chief rival for an 18th career and 16th pattern-race win by a head as The Grand Visir finished seven lengths adrift in third. “I'm feeling emotional,” Frankie said. “It was always going to be a messy race and I was using Richard [Kingscote on The Grand Visir] as a reference point, but Strad likes a target and so I pushed him close to William [Buick] and it worked–he only does enough and William would not go away, so it was a tremendous horse race. The reception he got–he's loved by everyone.”

One of the most consistent staying stars of all time, Stradivarius has drawn on his incredible constitution to maintain a level of ability that is still unattainable to much-younger rivals. Spanish Mission had shown when winning the G2 Yorkshire Cup and last year's G2 Doncaster Cup that he is a stayer of considerable merit and he held every chance of subduing the Gosden A-lister with everything to suit but ultimately came up short. With Subjectivist (GB) (Teofilo {Ire}) out of action for now, Stradivarius has the opportunity to garner more of these before time is called.

Dettori thinks there is more to come from the 7-year-old. “Every time he's run here I've felt he is below-par–he fell in the last two times he won this for the bonus–and I feel he's much better at Ascot,” he said of the hero of two Yorkshire Cups and the 2018 and 2019 renewals of this race. “He's getting older, he's getting wiser. He got the job done and knows exactly what he's got to do.”

John Gosden added, “He's phenomenal. All those miles of racing. I always think flat horses are at their peak at five, but some of the great jumpers race on so we'll see how he is. He's a very happy horse and he's got a very good sense of humour as well. As long as he's happy, we can keep racing. He was a really angry chap when he came home from Goodwood and hadn't run. He used to sting like a butterfly and float like a bee, but he's a little more rope a dope now! He's still up for it and it was a proper race for everyone to watch between two fabulous horses. The [Sept. 10 G2] Doncaster Cup is a possibility and there is Champions Day, I hope it's decent ground but if it's bottomless we might have to reroute.”

Anna Lisa Balding said of the runner-up, who is bound for the G1 Melbourne Cup, “He's run a hell of a race and I actually thought we'd won when he went ahead. I thought we'd got him, but we didn't. We'll stick to Plan A, Australia here we come and let's hope he does his stuff out there.”
Stradivarius is the last foal out of Private Life (Fr) (Bering {GB}), who was bought by Nielsen for 70,000gns at the 2006 Tattersalls December Mares Sale. She also produced the G3 Bavarian Classic and G3 Furstenberg-Rennen scorer Persian Storm (Ger) (Monsun {Ger}), the group-placed Rembrandt Van Rijn (Ire) (Peintre Celebre) and the stakes-placed Magical Eve (Ger) (Oratorio {Ire}). Like Peintre Celebre a descendant of the great Pawneese (Ire), who captured the G1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth S. and the G1 Prix de Diane, she is also connected to the G1 Melbourne Cup hero Protectionist (Ger) (Monsun {Ger}).
