Dark Angel’s Charyn Prevails In The G2 Criterium de Maisons-Laffitte

Nurlan Bizakov's 250,000gns Tattersalls October Book 2 yearling Charyn (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}–Futoon {Ire}, by Kodiac {GB}) ran third to Roger Varian-trained stablemate Sakheer (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}) in last month's G2 Mill Reef S. and continued his progression with a career high in Saturday's G2 Criterium de Maisons-Laffitte at Chantilly. He had earlier followed up an Aug. 7 debut triumph at Haydock with a narrow defeat at Newmarket in his penultimate start later that month. The eventual winner was sent forward from an early fifth to track the leaders in third after the opening exchanges. Bustled along passing the quarter-mile marker, the 27-10 second choice tackled 3-5 favourite Eddie's Boy (GB) (Havana Grey {GB}) entering the final furlong and kept on strongly under continued urging in the latter stages to deny that rival by a short neck after a ding-dong tussle.

“Roger Varian was quite confident the horse would run a great race and he felt the softer ground would help,” commented the winning owner's representative Mathieu Le Forestier. “The ground was fast [at Newbury] last time, he was away slowly and didn't get back into the race early enough. He had done that in his second start too. He broke a shade slowly again here, but Mickael [Barzalona] did well to put him under pressure straight away and he travelled well. One [furlong] out, I thought he'd win easily, but the second sure is a tough nut to crack. His season is probably finished, it looks like he will stay further and we will look forward to next year.”

Charyn, full to last year's G2 Mill Reef S. victor Wings Of War (Ire) and a weanling filly, becomes the 54th pattern-race winner for his sire (by Acclamation {GB}) and is the second foal out of the multiple stakes-placed Futoon (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}), herself the leading performer out of a full-sister to G2 Mill Reef S. winner and G1 Golden Jubilee S. runner-up Galeota (Ire). His second dam Vermilliann (Ire) (Mujadil) is also a half-sister to Listed River Eden Fillies' S. victrix Loulwa (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}), herself the dam of Listed Scarborough S. and Listed Prix Hampton victor Justineo (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}). Charyn's third dam Refined (Ire) (Statoblest {Ire}), who hails from family of multiple Group-winning G1 Champion S. runner-up Insatiable (Ire) (Don't Forget Me {Ire}), is a half-sister to G3 Criterion S. scorer Pipe Major (Ire) (Tirol {Ire}) and is also the second dam of the G3 Sirenia S.-winning siblings Brown Sugar (Ire) (Tamayuz {GB}) and Burnt Sugar (Ire) (Lope De Vega {Ire}).

Dark Angel’s Barefoot Angel Springs 20-1 Shock At Ayr

Richard Fahey trainee Barefoot Angel (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}–Love In The Desert {GB}, by Lemon Drop Kid) bettered an Aug. 1 debut second at Ripon with an Aug. 25 breakthrough at Carlisle and continued on the rise with an impressive tally at long odds in Saturday's G3 Virgin Bet Firth Of Clyde Fillies' S. at Ayr, her third straight start at the six-furlong trip. The 20-1 outsider was held up in rear through the initial stages of this stakes bow. Barefoot Angel becomes the 53rd pattern-race winner for her sire (by Acclamation {GB}) and the first out of Listed Empress S. third Love In The Desert (Lemon Drop Kid), herself kin to G3 Clasico Cesar del Rio runner-up Andeluna (Mineshaft) and to the dam of six black-type performers headed by the multiple stakes-winning Roy's Revenge (Ven) (League Of Nations). Barefoot Angel's third dam Brackish (Alleged), a half-sister to GI Matron S.-winning blue hen Fall Aspen (Pretense), produced a trio of stakes winners headed by G1 Derby Italiano runner-up Merzouk (Theatrical {Ire}). Dark Angel’s Mysterious Night To The Fore At Deauville

Third in last month's G2 July S. at Newmarket and G2 Vintage S. at Goodwood, Godolphin's homebred 2-year-old Mysterious Night (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}–Mistrusting {Ire}, by Shamardal) bounced back in style to claim an ultimately comfortable victory in Sunday's G3 Circus Maximus Prix Francois Boutin at Deauville. Steadied behind all four rivals through halfway, the 2-5 favourite made eyecatching headway once angle to the outer for a clear passage approaching the quarter-mile marker and kept on well under mild urging once gaining an edge passing the furlong pole to register a career high by a half length from Bolshkinov (Fr) (Camacho {GB}).

“He's a horse we've always liked and we decided to wait with him here rather than going forward like he did at Goodwood last time,” explained trainer Charlie Appleby. “We had it in mind to take him to Canada next, but William said it is not certain that he'd stretch out to a mile just yet, so we will look at various options here in Europe. The [G1 Prix Jean-Luc] Lagardere in October is a possibility.”

Mysterious Night becomes the 51st pattern-race winner for his sire and second for Listed Boadicea Fillies' S. victrix Mistrusting (Ire) (Shamardal), who also produced his GI Just A Game S. and GI Diana S.-winning full-sister Althiqa (GB). Mistrusting is the leading performer out of G2 Cherry Hinton S. victrix Misheer (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}), a granddaughter of Lighthouse (GB) (Warning {GB}) who is a half-sister to G1 Middle Park S.-winning sire First Trump (GB) (Primo Dominie {GB}) from the family of G1 Prix de l'Abbaye hero Mr Brooks (GB) (Blazing Saddles {Aus}). Dark Angel’s The Antarctic Battles To Cabourg Triumph

Coolmore, Westerberg & Brant's G2 Prix Robert Papin second The Antarctic (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}–Anna Law {Ire}, by Lawman {Fr}), a 750,000gns Tattersalls October Book 1 full-brother to Battaash (Ire), rebounded off that Chantilly defeat to secure a first stakes success in Tuesday's G3 Darley Prix de Cabourg at Deauville. The February-foaled grey had earlier backed up two early-season wins with a seventh in Royal Ascot's June 16 G2 Norfolk S. before hitting the board in June's Listed Tipperary S. in his last-but-one start. Missing a beat at the kick, the crowd's 6-5 pick soon recovered to race on the heels of the leaders in fourth. Shaken up and angled into clear either side of the two pole, he made his challenge at the furlong marker and was driven out by Ryan Moore in the closing stages to assert by a length from Manhattan Jungle (Ire) (Bungle Inthejungle {GB}). Michael Bell trainee Kerindia (Ire) (Cotai Glory {GB}) completed a sweep for the overseas raiders and finished 3/4-of-a-length adrift in third.

“The Antarctic had run so well last time out and he is a lovely, improving horse,” said Aidan O'Brien after bridging a 24-year gap back to his only prior winner of the contest, Hunan (Ire) (College Chapel {GB}), in 1998. “He has progressed with every run, he's gone very professional and is going the right way and we're very happy. Ryan [Moore] said the trip is no problem, from five, six or seven [furlongs], because he relaxes and quickens well. That's a good sign. He's got a great physique and a good mind. He relaxed very well today and had a good trip throughout. We will see what could be next, but he could be a horse for the [Aug. 21 G1] Prix Morny. That was the reason for coming here today and that's what we're thinking at the moment.”

Moore, who swept both juvenile pattern races and would later add the Listed Prix Carrousel for a successful afternoon's work, added, “He is a lovely sort, he is very well bred obviously, being a full-brother to Battaash, and he's a very easy horse to ride. He is uncomplicated and has improved with every run because he is just learning how to run. He has benefitted from the experience of racing.”

The Antarctic, the fifth of six foals, is one of two scorers out of Anna Law (Ire) (Lawman {Fr}), herself a half-sister to four black-type performers headed by G2 Champagne S. victor and G1 July Cup third Etlaala (GB) (Selkirk). His dam's first foal is multiple Group 1-winning speedster Battaash (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) and her latest is a yearling filly by Lope De Vega (Ire). Descendants of the The Antarctic's second dam Portelet (GB) (Night Shift) also include multiple Group-winning dual Group 1-placed sire Tasleet (GB) (Showcasing {GB}).
