Curlin Looking to Follow Up on Memorable 2019 Saratoga Success

The last time the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Selected Yearlings Sale was held, Curlin recorded a memorable trifecta with the auction's top three seven-figure yearlings. Leading the way was the $1.5-million co-topper First Captain, who was tabbed a 'TDN Rising Star' and captured  the GIII Dwyer S. The Hill 'n' Dale stallion will be represented by five yearlings when bidding returns to the Humphrey S. Finney pavilion in upstate New York next week.

Curlin is truly a Classic sire,” said Mark Taylor of Taylor Made Sales Agency, which will consign two fillies by the stallion during the two-day boutique sale. “He can come up with a good 2-year-old, but when I think Curlin, I am thinking about big-time route races.”

The first of Taylor Made's offerings by Curlin is hip 63, a daughter of Classofsixtythree (Include) and a half-sister to graded stakes winner and Grade I placed Gunmetal Gray (Exchange Rate).

“This filly has grown up on Taylor Made and I have always loved her,” Taylor said. “She is a May foal and is only scratching the surface of what she will be in time. This filly is out of an Include mare and is a half-sister to Gunmetal Gray, who was a Grade I-placed 2-year-old and a top-tier 3-year-old a few years back. This filly looks like she will be a Classic two-turn filly. She's a very nice Curlin.”

Also from the Taylor Made consignment is hip 181, a daughter of Curlin whose dam Rose Garden (Pioneerof the Nile) is a half-sister to GI Preakness S. winner Exaggerator, also by Curlin.

“This filly is a late April foal,” Taylor said. “She has a ton of size and strength. For anyone trying to find an Oaks type 3-year-old, she will hit their radar. Her dam is a half-sister to Exaggerator, so Curlin has already produced a Classic winner from this immediate family. She was born and raised at Twin Creeks Farm. They have produced a bunch of classy horses over the years, including Tiz The Law last year.”

Taylor Made is no stranger to dealing with talented daughters of Curlin.

“We have sold some talented Curlin fillies in the past,” Taylor said. “The one who jumps out at me as the prototype of what I think Curlin produces is Grade II winner Point of Honor. She had strength, scope and balance. She ran to those looks and has just come up short at the Grade I level. Spice Is Nice is another beautiful Curlin filly. We did not sell her, but she was rehabbed with us for a few months. She had the same qualities as Point of Honor–just beautiful fillies.”

Rounding out the three Curlin fillies in the Saratoga catalogue is hip 128, a daughter of Leslie May (Tapit), who is a half-sister to multiple graded stakes winner Uncaptured (Lion Heart). The gray filly is consigned by Warrendale Sales as agent for her breeder Stonestreet, which campaigned two-time Horse of the Year Curlin.

A pair of colts by Curlin are catalogued for Tuesday's second session of the Saratoga sale. Lane's End will consign hip 166, a son of Often (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), who is a half-sister to Giant's Causeway.

Gainesway consigns hip 207, a chestnut colt out of stakes winner Sweet Seventeen (Hard Spun).

Taylor is happy to have the Saratoga sale back in the line-up after a year's hiatus caused by the pandemic.

“It's great to be back at Saratoga this year,” Taylor said. “It's an important sale for buyers, sellers and consignors. Having the racing and selling all in one great town is a unique combination.”

Taylor Made has had many memorable moments at the Saratoga sale, which celebrates its 100th renewal this year.

“We have so many great memories at Saratoga,” Taylor said. “All the sale toppers over the years have been exciting and consigning  great racehorses like Rushing Fall, American Pharoah, Vindication and so many others  makes the effort not seem like work at all.”

Nice Guys Stables Continues to Expand With Fasig July Offerings

Steve Spielman and his partners in Nice Guys Stables seem to have the Midas touch in the horse racing industry. Their first horse, Piedi Bianchi (Overanalyze), took them to one of racing's biggest stages in 2017, the Breeders' Cup. Also, this year, in just their second year pinhooking yearlings to juveniles, the group had an Arrogate filly they purchased for just $150,000 at Keeneland September sell for $1-million at OBS April.

“I grew up in New York and have been going to the track since I was a kid,” said Spielman. “In 2016, we got out first horse, Piedi Bianchi, and she took us to the Breeders' Cup. From there on, we just started getting into different aspects of the business and expanding. We do it all.”

Spielman's group branched out into breeding and they will offer three yearlings from their program at the upcoming Fasig-Tipton July Sale with Burleson Farm, where all their mares are boarded.

Nice Guys Stables purchased History Supreme (Speightstown) privately carrying a foal from the first crop of champion Accelerate (Lookin At Lucky) after she RNA'd for $95,000 at Keeneland January. The resulting colt is catalogued as Hip 181.

“He is pretty forward,” Spielman said. “He has very good size and is powerful. I loved Accelerate as a racehorse. He looks forward enough to be a good colt for July.”

Their next colt to go through the ring will be Hip 192, a son of the late Arrogate, who the group has already had tremendous luck with during the juvenile sales season. His dam Jazaalah (Hard Spun) hails from a Shadwell family that includes Grade I winner Takaful (Bernardini) and GSW Haikal (Daaher). Nice Guys purchased her for $190,000 at Keeneland November with the Arrogate colt in utero.

“We are hoping for a repeat with Arrogate,” Spielman said. “We knew the OBS filly would be high up. She was perfect and the timing was right. We are very selective with our pinhooks and will get into weanling-to-yearling pinhooks this year.”

Rounding out the Nice Guys trio is a well-bred son of Street Sense (Hip 212). His dam Lucky Cover, a $195,000 KEENOV buy in 2018, is a daughter of MGSW & MGISP Teammate (A.P. Indy), who is a half-sister to GISW and top sire War Front (Danzig).

“He's a big, powerful horse by a good sire,” Spielman said. “He should fair well.”

Off the back of a strong juvenile sales season, Spielman is hopeful heading into the first yearling auction of the season.

“I think people will be excited to get out there,” he said. “The business seems to be doing well and COVID seems to be calming down. I think things will get going quickly in July.”

Dances Buy Manor House Farm and Stud

John and Jess Dance have purchased Manor House Farm & Stud in Middleham and plan to develop the property for their yearlings and racing stock, they announced on Twitter Monday morning. The MG1SW Laurens (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}) is the best runner so far in John Dance's name, and going forward, all of the Dance runners will race in the name of John and Jess Dance. The couple also have new black and gold colours, with Laurens's colours acting as second colours. James Horton will become a private trainer at Manor House for the Dances in late 2021.

“As you know, we announced a temporary wind down of our operations last summer so we could step back from racing for a period and re-evaluate,” the Dances said in a statement released on Twitter. “We sold the majority of our horses in training, all of our homebred yearling (bar one that had an issue) and didn't buy anything from the yearling sales…

“In November last year we bought Manor House Farm & Stud in Middleham, the birthplace of the great Derby winner Dante…Subject to planning approval we hope to redevelop the property. We intend to split the farm in to two separate operations, one a top-class private facility and the other as a development stud for some of our homebred yearlings…

“We did buy a few sneaky yearlings from the December sale, bought a few previously unsold 2yos earlier this year from trainers…[we] were very active at the Craven Breeze-Up Sale…All bar a few who we will need to be very patient with will be going to existing trainers and we must extend our thanks to both Creighton Schwartz and SackvilleDonald, who as always, were invaluable in advising, assessing and helping us buy…

“We are all both delighted and proud to announce that from the late end of 2021, James Horton will be our private trainer. James has a fantastic CV for moving in to the training ranks and has most recently been assistant to the great Sir Michael Stoute.

“The 'team' that now includes James, have very similar aspirations and philosophies and whilst he has already been incredibly useful in helping with designs and layouts of our proposed facility, we are all looking forward to the yearling sales where we will officially start this exciting journey.”

Among the eight lots purchased by Manor House Stud at the recent Tattersalls Craven Breeze Up Sale was a bay colt by Kingman (GB) out of Flying Fairies (Ire) (Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}) (lot 8), who cost 335,000gns from Kilminfoyle House Stud.
