Vercingetorix Yearlings Popular At KZN Yearling Sale

Last held in 2019 pre-COVID, the Bloodstock South Africa KZN Yearling Sale's first session was topped by a son of Vercingetorix (SAf) for R1.1 million ($66,851/£55,728/€64,368) to John Freeman. Consigned by Boland Stud, he was sold as lot 73.  He is out of a winning Var (SAf) half-sister to Grade 2 winner Silvano's Jet (SAf) (Silvano {Ger}), while his second dam is a dual listed winner and a daughter of the Grade 1 winner State Treasure (SAf) (Free State {Ire}).

That Maine Chance Farms' sire was also responsible for Thursday's top-priced filly, lot 4, who was also the second-highest lot of the day. Mary Liley bought the Klawervlei Stud-consigned filly for R625,000 ($37,967/£31,663/€36,566). She is a relative of G1 Dubai Golden Shaheen scorer Sterling City (Aus) (Nadeem {Aus}) and G1 Randwick Guineas winner Kementari (Aus) (Lonhro {Aus}).

Overall, the first session saw a gross of R18,095,000 ($1,098,926/£916,778/€1,058,646) for 146 sold from 153 offered (95.4%). The average was R123,938 ($7,526/£6,279/€7,250) up 37.7% from 2019's numbers, while the median also rose 22.6% to R77,500 ($4,708/£3,928/€4,536). Friday marks the second and final session of the two-day stand.

Strong Trade As BSA National Yearling Sale Ends

A bay son of Gimmethegreenlight (Aus) (lot 378) brought a session-topping R2 million (£100,745/€120,106/$126,676) during the second day's trade at the Bloodstock South Africa National Yearling Sale which ended on Friday. Greg Bortz snapped up the half-brother to Grade 3 winners Ghaalla (SAf) (Var) and Due Diligence (SAf) (Silvano {Ger}) from Varsfontein Stud, who is already named Steadfast (SAf). South African Triple Crown winner Malmoos (SAf) (Captain Al {SAf}) features under the second dam.

Second top lot was a son of Fire Away out of Equus Champion Broodmare of the Year Halfway To Heaven (SAf) (Jet Master {SAf}) (lot 407). A member of the Wilgerbosdrift consignment, Hope And Dreams (SAf) brought a bid of R1.6 million from Form Bloodstock. The dark bay has three half-siblings that have won at the highest level in South Africa-Equus Horse of the Year Rainbow Bridge (SAf) (Ideal World), Equus Champion 3-Year-Old Colt Hawwaam (SAf) (Silvano {Ger}) and Golden Ducat (SAf) (Philanthropist).

Lot 274, a daughter of Gimmethegreenlight (Aus), was the priciest filly of the day, and she caught the eye of Lammerskraal Stud for an even R1 million. Part of the Klawervlei Stud draft, the Oct. 1 foal is a half-sister to stakes winner Sovereign Secret (SAf) (Dynasty {Saf}), with the duo a product of Equus Champion 2-Year-Old Filly All Is Secret (SAf) (Captain Al {SAf}).

After the two-day stand wrapped, 21 horses had made seven figures, with indices up across all categories when compared to 2021. The total gross was R136,355,000 (£6,868,564/€8,188,574/$8,636,378) for 381 sold from 451 offered (84%), while the average was R357,887 (£18,028/€21,490/$22,667) (+29%) and the median came in at R250,000 (£12,593/€15,010/$15,834) (+25%).

LTBA to Hold Louisiana Yearling Sale Oct. 1

The Louisiana Thoroughbred Breeders Association will host a yearling sale followed by a mixed session under the Breeders Sales Company of Louisiana banner Oct. 1.

The sale will be held at the Equine Sales of Louisiana facility in Opelousas, La. and will be limited to 228 stalls at the facility.

After not conducting a sale since 2015, the LTBA hosted a yearling sale averaging over $13,000 with a median of $8,000.

The entry deadline is July 6. Entry forms will be available in late May and be available to be downloaded from the Louisiana Thoroughbred Breeders Association web site of www.louisianabred.com.

White Marlin Added to Tattersalls February Sale

The two-for-two White Marlin (Ire) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}) has been added to the upcoming Tattersalls February Sale on Feb. 3-4. Consigned as lot 375A by Ronald Rauscher, the 4-year-old colt is rated 93p by Timeform after winning a Dec. 15 Dundalk maiden and a Jan. 14 handicap there, both over 1 ½ miles on the all-weather for trainer Joseph O'Brien in the colours of Ms. M. McDowall.

In addition, the grey is a half-brother to G1 Flying Five S. heroine Romantic Proposal (Ire) (Raven's Pass). The duo are out of the winner Playwithmyheart (GB) (Diktat {GB}), herself a half-sister to G1 Prix de la Foret hero Toylsome (GB) (Cadeaux Genereux {GB}), the G3 winner Coral Mist (GB) (Bahamian Bounty {GB}) and the dam of stakes winner and G1 Vertem Futurity Trophy S. third Western Australia (Ire) (Australia {GB}).
