Tamahere Finds Winner’s Circle In Violet Stakes At Monmouth

Tamahere found non-graded stakes company to be exactly what she needed to return to the winner's circle.

The Chad Brown-trainee, who had raced against Grade 1 or Grade 2 in five of her six starts since coming to the United States last fall, went to the front and was never threatened in romping to a 7¼-length victory in Saturday's $100,000 Violet Stakes at Monmouth Park in Oceanport, N.J.

The 4-year-old filly was unbothered by a yielding turf course, a gate scratch that caused a delay, and a last-minute rider switch in returning to the winner's circle for the first time since winning the Grade 2 Sands Point at Belmont Park on Oct. 10, 2020.

The winning time for the mile and a sixteenth was 1:45.74.

“This is a good filly, a really good filly,” said Luis Cabrera, who oversees Brown's division at Monmouth Park. “Chad was trying to give her an easier spot so she could get her confidence back.

“We weren't worried about the yielding turf. She's a French horse. She's used to it. She can handle a yielding turf. This was pretty much the way she ran in her last race (the Grade 2 Ballston Spa at Saratoga, where she was caught late) but it was an easier group.”

Vigilantes Way, a two-time stakes winner at the Monmouth Park meet, was second. It was another 1¾ lengths back to the Brown-trained Counterparty Risk in third.

Malborough Road was a gate scratch, reducing the field to five fillies and mares three and up.

Ferrer wound up filling in as a replacement for scheduled rider Hector Diaz, Jr., who went down a race earlier when his horse clipped heels. Diaz, excused from his remaining mounts, suffered facial cuts and was complaining of dizziness.

“I was taking a shower because I was off and I got out of the shower and Luis asked if I would ride his horse,” said Ferrer. “Of course I'll ride a Chad Brown horse – any time. This really doesn't happen that much where you pick up a mount this late and win a stakes race. I've been riding 37 years and it's the first time I ever picked up a stakes-winning mount like this at the last minute.”

Ferrer said the paddock instructions from Cabrera were simple: get to the front and get the daughter of Wootton Bassett to relax.

“I came out to the paddock and talked to Luis about her. He said she likes being on the front and you can get her to relax there,” Ferrer said. “I got to the lead, she relaxed real nice on the backside, and after that, it was game over. She handled the turf real nice. She was really comfortable out there.”

Tamahere returned $5.40 to win in posting her fourth victory in 13 career starts.

Monmouth Park's 55-day meet concludes with a 14-race card on Sunday, highlighted by the $500,000 Nownownow Stakes for 2-year-olds at a mile on the grass.

First race post time is 12:15 p.m.

Royal Patronage Gets BC Juvenile Turf Berth With Royal Lodge Victory At Newmarket

Highclere Thoroughbred Racing's Royal Patronage (FR) landed a thrilling Group 2 Juddmonte Royal Lodge Stakes at Newmarket Race Course in England, securing his guaranteed start in the $1 million Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf as part of the “Win and You're In” international Breeders' Cup Challenge Series.

The Breeders' Cup Challenge Series is an international series of 84 stakes races whose winners receive automatic starting positions and fees paid into a corresponding race of the Breeders' Cup World Championships, which will be held at Del Mar racetrack in Del Mar, California on Nov. 5-6.

A son of Wootton Bassett (GB) out of the Dalakhani (IRE) mare Shaloushka (IRE), Royal Patronage (FR) reeled in joint favorite Coroebus (IRE) in the shadows of the post to win the Juddmonte Royal Lodge Stakes by a neck.

Trained by Mark Johnston and ridden by Jason Hart, Royal Patronage raced prominently in the early stages in the seven-horse field. Godolphin's Coroebus (IRE) took up the running at halfway and surged clear from the field under William Buick, before being run down and headed on the line by the eventual winner. The Donnacha O'Brien-trained Unconquerable (IRE), the 33-1 outsider of the field, finished 2 ½ lengths back in the third. Joint favorite Masekela (IRE) finished fourth.

Celebrating his fourth Juddmonte Royal Lodge Stakes victory, Johnston was delighted with the performance of his 2-year-old colt.

“I thought we were going to finish second even well inside the final furlong,” said Johnston. “At that stage, I was happy. He was running away from the chasing pack and I was thinking he's going to be a lovely horse for stepping up in trip next year. Jason [Hart] said the moment he hit the rising ground he was just gaining with every stride. He won well in the end.”

No immediate plans have been made for the exciting juvenile, but a tilt at next year's Group 1 Epsom Derby is under consideration.

Johnston added: “He looks like a Derby horse. It's great when you've got a horse who you're thinking might stay a mile and a half, but is showing so much speed early on as well. That's ideal.”

Royal Patronage (7/2) finished the mile in 1:38:06 over a course listed as good to firm. It was his third consecutive win after breaking his maiden in a novice stakes at Epsom Downs on July 29, and capturing the seven-furlong Group 3 Tattersalls Acomb Stakes at York Racecourse on Aug. 18 in his previous start.

As part of the benefits of the Challenge Series, the Breeders' Cup will pay the entry fees for Royal Patronage to start in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf, which will be run at one mile over the turf course at Del Mar Thoroughbed Club in Del Mar, Calif. Breeders' Cup also will provide a travel allowance of $40,000 for all starters based outside of North America to compete in the World Championships.

Trident Takes Dead Aim On Tattersalls

Andre Fabre has long considered Newmarket to be a happy hunting ground and it is significant that the master of Chantilly is at the old “Headquarters” on Thursday for the G3 Tattersalls S. Thirty years ago, Tertian (Danzig) came for this specific race and duly landed the odds and this time it is Trident (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) who is lined up for the seven-furlong prize representing Messrs Smith, Magnier, Tabor and Westerberg. Runner-up in the G1 Prix Morny at Deauville Aug. 22, the bay can only improve over this longer trip on pedigree and could yet shape up into one of his handler's 2000 Guineas hopefuls come the spring.

“I see they had rain on Sunday at Newmarket, but it should have dried by now and in any case, whatever the ground is it won't bother him,” Fabre said. “He got a bump in the Morny just when he was quickening. The extra distance this time will be in his favour and he's going to run well. He's a very reliable colt.”

Godolphin's Modern Games (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) comes in off a nursery handicap success at Doncaster's St Leger Festival Sept. 8 and trainer Charlie Appleby said, “Modern Games has a lovely, progressive profile and has done very little wrong to date. We have been pleased with him going into this and the testing seven at Newmarket should suit.” Prior to his Doncaster win, Modern Games was second to Manton Park Racing's Cresta (Fr) (New Bay {GB}) in a Leicester novice Aug. 8 and his trainer Martyn Meade said, “Obviously this is a step up, but he's in good form and is ready to take his chance. Andre Fabre's horse was obviously second in the Morny and you can't take that away from him, but you shouldn't be worried about one and we'll take him on.”

Highclere Thoroughbred Racing's Harrow (Ire) (El Kabeir) has won a York nursery Aug. 19 and Doncaster's Weatherbys Scientific £200,000 2-Y-O S. over 6 1/2 furlongs Sept. 9, where he impressed with his acceleration at the finish. Harry Herbert is hoping he can make his presence felt in this company. “Andrew [Balding] has always held the horse in high regard and with every race, he's taken a big step forward,” he said. “I think having won that valuable sales race at Doncaster, Andrew desperately wanted to move into black-type company, so we'll see. It's a big leap, as we know, taking on Andre Fabre's horse Trident but he's very tough and we need to see where we are in the big picture.”
