Observations: All Eyes on Ballydoyle Pair in the “Tough Talk” Maiden

Observations on the European Racing Scene turns the spotlight on the best European races of the day, highlighting well-pedigreed horses early in their careers, horses of note returning to action and young runners that achieved notable results in the sales ring. Sunday's Insights features the well-bred River Tiber (Ire) at The Curragh for Ballydoyle.

1.25 Curragh, Mdn, €17,000, 2yo, 6fT
RIVER TIBER (IRE) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) appears the pick of the two juvenile colts from Ballydoyle making his debut in this maiden which proved such a fertile source of group performers 12 months ago as Tough Talk (Ire) (Kingman {GB}) led home Little Big Bear (Ire) (No Nay Never) and Shartash (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) and other useful types. A 480,000gns Book 1 purchase, the February-foaled bay hails from the family of the 2013 G1 Phoenix S. winner Sudirman (Henrythenavigator) and Star Of India (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) who captured last year's Listed Dee S. for this stable. Also here is Democracy (Ire) (No Nay Never), a full-brother to last year's G3 Oh So Sharp S. scorer Midnight Mile (Ire) from the family of Quarter Moon (Ire) (Sadler's Wells).

Wootton Bassett Colt Looks Classic Material

Having wowed with a six-length win over a mile at Saint-Cloud in November, Malcolm Parrish's exciting colt American Flag (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}–Tres Americanqueen {Fr}, by American Post {GB}) returned to the same course and distance on Saturday to put his name among the 2023 Classic hopefuls with an impressive success in the Listed Prix Omnium II. Held up initially by Christophe Soumillon, the Yann Barberot-trained relative of the G2 Grand Prix de Deauville winner Tres Blue (Ire) (Anabaa Blue {GB}) was cajoled forward nearing the end of the back straight. Seizing the advantage passing the two-furlong pole, the even-money favourite was soon clear and was eased late on to register a three-length verdict over Kendly (Fr) (Kendargent {Fr}).

“Last year after his win over the course and distance he showed us that he could be a horse with a great potential,” the trainer said of the €102,000 purchase at the 2021 Arqana Deauville August Sale. “He confirmed that today, even though he was not fully fit having only had an easy piece of work on the grass last Tuesday. That opens up possibilities, but so far he has only raced on soft ground and I don't know how he will do over good or faster. The [G3] Prix de Fontainebleau is an option, but we won't commit at this stage.”

The dam is a daughter of the dual group-placed Tres Ravi (Ger) (Monsun {Ger}), whose six black-type performers include the G2 Grand Prix de Deauville winner and G1 Deutsches Derby runner-up Tres Blue (Ire) (Anabaa Blue {GB}) and the multiple group-winning sire Tres Rock Danon (Fr) (Rock Of Gibraltar {Ire}). Another of her progeny, Anabaa Blue's G2 Prix de Royallieu runner-up Tres Rapide (Ire), is the second dam of Pretty Tiger (Ire) (Sea The Moon {Ger}) who excelled here when capturing the G2 Prix Eugene Adam and G3 Prix Exbury and was second in the G1 Prix Ganay and Pretty Boy (Ire) (Siyouni {Fr}) who was second in this venue's G3 Prix Thomas Bryon. Tres Americanqueen's 2-year-old colt American Thunder (Fr) is by Night Of Thunder (Ire).

Protagonist Lands With A Bang For Haggas Down Under

by TDN AusNZ

Protagonist (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) continued the success story of British trainer William Haggas in Australia when he captured the G3 Sky High S. (2000 metres) at Rosehill (video), beating fellow French-bred 6-year-old gelding Zeyrek (Fr) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) when holding on in a photo finish. It won't be a huge surprise to the team at home, as you may remember Haggas serving a warning on Protagonist late last month when he told TDN AusNZ readers, “You shouldn't underestimate him, he's quite a smart horse.”

Still, that was before the horse had touched down on Australian soil and there have been plenty of hurdles to jump since then, and the local preparation has been ably handled by assistant trainer Issy Paul, her second stint in charge of the raiding team having accompanied Addeybb (Ire) (Pivotal {GB}) two years ago.

“To come off a flight and after two weeks of quarantine–we've only come out of quarantine today–he's awesome,” Paul said.

“We weren't sure whether the ground was going to suit him, particularly when they upgraded the track, but what a star.”

Whilst Paul declined to commit to a future target for the horse, James McDonald pointed to improvement still to come.

“He's a nice, solid galloper who handles himself beautifully,” McDonald said. “I think he'll improve a bit off that as well–he hit the front a fair way from home and just star-gazed a bit, just had a good look around. When they got to him he found again, so that was impressive.”

Protagonist was initially purchased as a yearling by Mark McStay/Avenue Bloodstock for €125,000 at Arqana August in 2018.

QUICKSTEP (FR) (f, 2, Wootton Bassett {GB}–Dance Toupie {Fr}, by Dansili {GB}) was well away from the inside stall to race in a handy third after the opening quarter of this debutantes' heat. Making smooth headway on the bridle in the straight and sent with 300 metres remaining, the even-money pick took a slender advantage into the final furlong and kept on powerfully under whipless coaxing in the closing stages to defeat Sunlike (Fr) (De Treville {GB}) by 1 1/4 lengths. Quickstep is the seventh of eight foals and sixth scorer from as many runners produced by a half-sister to four black-type performers out of G3 Prix d'Arenberg victrix and G1 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches runner-up Toupie (GB) (Intikhab). The May-foaled dark bay, who joined the Godolphin fold for 350,000gns from the Haras d'Etreham draft at the Tattersalls October Sale Book 2, is a full-sister to G3 Prix Daphnis second Dave (Fr) and a half to GIII Daytona S. third Commander (Fr) (War Command) and a weanling filly by Persian King (Ire). The latter was purchased by Bobby Flay for €65,000 out of the Arqana December Breeding Stock Sale earlier this month. Sales history: €120,000 Wlg '20 ARQDEC; 350,000gns Ylg '21 TATOCT.
