Amplify Horse Racing’s Mentorship Pilot Program a Success

Several new faces were on the Keeneland sales grounds this week as part of the initial pilot for the Amplify Horse Racing Mentorship Program.

This August, the three-month program launched with a group of 12 mentees hailing from eight different states. While most mentor-mentee pairs were separated by distance and initially planned on holding their meetings virtually, several mentees expressed an interest in meeting their mentors in person and decided to make the trip to Lexington for their first visit to the Keeneland September Sale.

Matt Scull, age 23, lives in South Carolina and arrived in Lexington just in time for the start of Book 4 to shadow his mentor Shannon Castagnola, the Director of Marketing and Client Relations at Woodford Thoroughbreds. He was able to observe the Woodford consignment during both a day of showing and a day of selling. On his last day at Keeneland, he shadowed a bloodstock agent to inspect Book 5 yearlings.

“Shannon has introduced me to so many faces,” Scull said. “She taught me a bunch about the vetting process, the different bits the horses wear as well as the general basics of being a consignor at a sale. Before this internship, I didn't understand the number of different career paths there are in this industry. I was just thinking about a jockey, owner and trainer. I actually believe this is the greatest sport on earth and I think having people committed to it for their careers is huge.”

Scull developed an interest in racing through his family's annual trips to Monmouth Park.

“My great grandfather, who I met once when I was three before he passed away, loved racing from the gambling side,” Scull said. “So once a year at Monmouth Park my family would have 'Poppy Day' at the races. My freshman year of college I dug super deep in terms of the handicapping side of things. As my life has progressed, I've figured out that this is one of my passions and that I need to pursue it.”

Scull recently graduated from the University of Clemson with a degree in mechanical engineering. He said he was scrolling through Twitter one day during his lunch break at the gas and engine consulting firm he works for when he happened upon Amplify's mentorship application.

“I figured I probably wasn't going to get it, but I thought I would kill 30 minutes of my lunch break by typing it out,” he explained. “I was lucky enough to be selected and it has snowballed from there. It's been amazing. I've gone from not knowing what a pinhook is to potentially working on a farm later this year.”

Scull said he and Castagnola first met when he visited Saratoga this summer. They later conversed several times virtually and his mentor answered his many questions about the sales environment. After taking three vacation days from his full-time job to visit the Keeneland Sale, he said he's still unsure of which sector of the industry he would like to pursue a career in.

“I'm still figuring it out,” he admitted. “I'm a big fan of science and it's kind of crazy how many things are going on [at the sale] in terms of biomechanics and genetic testing. I got to see a video scope and that was really cool. I wish I had a better idea of which direction I want to go, but I think that's part of the beauty of it. There are so many different paths that you could go down and once you decide, it seems like everybody wears multiple hats which is awesome.”

Carol Hayes of Gainesville, Florida was paired with Bonne Chane Farm's Bloodstock and Office Manager Leah Alessandroni. When Hayes expressed an interest in the sales aspect of the sport, her mentor connected her with Carrie Brogden. One week before the Keeneland sale began, Hayes was hired on to work for the Machmer Hall consignment and she made the 12-hour drive up to Lexington to experience her first-ever horse sale.

“I really enjoy it,” the 22-year-old said between calling cards for Book 5. “It's high-paced and I like that. I think it's really interesting to see how the sale goes. I made sure to get here a day early so I could watch the sale before I started working. So I got to experience that side and now that I'm on the behind-the-scenes side, it's interesting to see how all this works.”

Growing up near Ocala, Hayes has been riding hunters and jumpers for most of her life. She said she has always had an interest in racing, but wasn't sure how to get involved.

“It's one sector of the horse industry that I never really got to dive into, so I've always wanted to check it off,” she said. “I found the Amplify mentorship program through the University of Florida. One of our advisors posted it on our undergraduate internship posting page.”

Hayes and her mentor first met over Zoom, but when Hayes was traveling to Lexington for a horse show a few weeks later, she met up with Alessandroni to shadow her for a day.

“We went to the track in the morning because one of their horses was training and then we went to her farm and I got to see what she does there,” Hayes recalled.

After her experience working the sales, Hayes said she is most interested in the management side of the industry.

“But I'm still figuring it out,” she added.

“It has been immensely gratifying to watch this group of mentees grow and progress,” said Amplify Horse Racing's President and Co-Founder Annise Montplaisir. “For most of them, the Thoroughbred industry was very new and felt daunting to be involved with on a more in-depth level than simply going to the races as a fan. Over these past couple of months, I have met and corresponded regularly with all 12, and have received nothing but positive feedback about all they have learned from their mentors and the respect they have for the time their mentors are sharing with them. Many mentees are already starting to make next-step plans about pursuing jobs in the industry and looking at other ways to gain more experience.”

Montplaisir, who in conjunction with her work through Amplify is also the equine education coordinator for the Kentucky Equine Education Project, explained that before the pilot program launched, potential mentees went through an application and interview process. The goal was to prioritize young adults who were interested in pursuing a career in the Thoroughbred industry, but had minimal exposure to the sport and didn't know how to get started.

Mentors and mentees were paired based on interests, commonalities and proximity. After an initial introduction to their mentors via Zoom by Amplify, mentees were tasked with organizing meetings with their mentors on their own. While they were required to have one meeting per month over the three-month program, Montplaisir said that many pairs met as often as once per week.

Mentors assisted their mentees by sharing their personal career experiences, answering questions and giving advice on the skill set their mentee might need in order to get involved in certain sectors of the industry.

“I love talking about the Thoroughbred industry and I'm really passionate about it, so it's easy for me to talk about,” Castagnola said when asked why she decided to join the mentorship program. “I think the stigma is that we've all spent 20 years learning this business, and so for somebody who is coming in knowing nothing, they're having to start from scratch. I was telling Matt yesterday, I spend every day learning something new even now and that's the best thing about this business: every day you learn something new.”

“For me, it's really simple,” Alessandroni said of why she become a mentor. “I didn't come from a family that was involved in racing and when I was coming through the ranks, there were so many people that mentored me and gave me opportunities, so I felt like it was an obligation for me to essentially pay it forward.”

“The experience has been really great so far,” she continued. “I've enjoyed chatting with Carol and it has kind of renewed my excitement in the industry. We do this as a daily grind and sometimes we get caught up in it, but to see it through the enthusiasm of someone like Carol, I honestly think it has been equally rewarding from both sides. Through this Amplify program, it's critical to stress the importance of what they're doing to educate young people about the opportunities that are here for them in the industry and to let them know that you don't have to have the secret handshake to get in the door, you just have to work hard.”

The first round of mentorships will concluded at the end of October. A virtual mentorship assembly will be held over Zoom to bring all the mentors and mentees together to widen each of the mentees' networks to industry professionals.

In the future, Amplify's goal is to have a rolling application where prospective mentees can apply any time from January through August to be paired with a mentor for that year. Mentees who apply beyond the middle of August will be considered for the program the following year.

City of Light Book 3 Yearlings Keeping Busy at Keeneland

If City of Light was considered to be in demand after the close of Book 1 at the Keeneland September Sale, his yearlings were perhaps even more challenging to get ahold of by the end of Book 2.

First a colt by the first-crop stallion out of the graded stakes-producing mare Ghostslayer (Ghostzapper) brought $1.05 million late in the second session of the auction on Tuesday, selling as Hip 376, but then the next day another colt by the Lane's End sire, Hip 612 out of SP Anchorage (Tapit), brought down the house when he sold for $1.7 million. The purchase for Woodford Racing, Talla Racing and West Point Thoroughbreds marked the colt as the current sale topper after the first four sessions.

Through the initial pair of Keeneland September books, 28 City of Light yearlings sold for a gross of $12,535,000 and a $447,679 average. Eight of those offering brought at least $500,000.

So far this year, 42 of the 47 City of Light yearlings to have gone through the ring have sold to average $398,690.

“The September Sale results for City of Light so far have been astounding,” Lane's End's Allaire Ryan said. “I think it's a testament to the type of physical that he throws and the quality that he puts into all of his foals. The market is really reflective of the individuals that are out there. If you have a nice individual, whether it's in Book 1 or Book 5, you're going to do well with it. That sort of quality is what is sought after, whether it's by end users or people looking to resell. City of Light has had a fantastic sale so far and we're happy to ride on that momentum throughout the second week.”

Winner of the 2018 GI Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile and 2019 GI Pegasus World Cup Invitational S., City of Light has 19 sons and daughters slated to go through the ring this weekend for Book 3 of the catalogue with more to come in the following sessions.

Several consignors representing City of Light yearlings spoke on the quality they've seen in their offerings and the demand the youngsters have had from potential buyers  since they stepped onto the sales grounds.

Hip 1393: City of Light colt out of Azure Spring (Open Forum)

   Consigned by Columbiana Farm, Hip 1393 is a half-brother to MGSW Selcourt (Tiz Wonderful) as well as six other winners. As inspections started to slow in late afternoon on the first day the colt was available for buyers to visit, Columbiana's Kathy Berkey said the colt had already been shown 98 times that day.

“He's been very popular and we've always liked him,” Berkey said. “He's so well balanced, so athletic and such a lovely walker. Knowing the mare the way we do, we've raised all of her foals and when she gets a good one, you can tell from the beginning that it's going to be a good one. Selcourt was a superstar and this is a really nice colt too. We're thrilled to have him here and we hope he runs to his looks.”

 

Hip 1408: City of Light filly out of Betty Draper (Street Cry {Ire})

Hip 1408 is the second foal out of the Street Cry mare Betty Draper, a winner in France and a half-sister to stakes winners Modern (Tiznow) and City Plan (Street Sense).

Romain Malhouitre of Runnymede Farm said that the filly was foaled and raised at Runnymede before attending the 2020 Keeneland November Sale. After selling for $130,000 to Hubert Guy Bloodstock, she was sent back to their farm to prepare to go through the ring as a yearling.

“She's a lovely filly who stands over a lot of ground and she's very athletic,” Malhouitre said. “What we love the most is the way she moves. She's very fluid and efficient when she moves. She's been amazing all her life. She has plenty of bone and a good mind. She's got that look that most of the City of Light yearlings have, so we are very pleased to be able to present her to the market.”

 

Hip 1458: City of Light filly out of Dixie Victory (Dixie Union)

Presented by Lane's End, Hip 1458 is out of the winning Dixie Union mare Dixie Victory, a daughter of GI Prioress S. winner and stakes producer Friendly Michelle (Artax). Dixie Victory was purchased with this filly in utero for $240,000 at the 2019 Keeneland November Sale.

“This filly is beautifully-balanced,” Allaire Ryan said. “She's a perfect package to look at. She moves well. She has a great range of motion and she's keen-looking, too, with a pretty head and eye. She's the type that I think would suit any end user or a pinhooker.”

Hip 1884: City of Light filly out of Flatbow (Broken Vow)

Beth Bayer of Woodford Thoroughbreds is high on City of Light after a son of the young sire was a popular offering for their consignment in Book 2. Hip 1059, a colt out of SP Fashion Runaway (Old Fashioned), sold for $485,000 to Whisper Hill Farm.

“We love all our City of Light yearlings,” Bayer said. “He's stamping his horses and it seems like every one of them has a great walk, great attitude and a good body and shape. Everything about them is spot-on racehorse attitude.”

Hip 1884 sells in the sixth session of the Keeneland September Sale with Woodford Thoroughbreds. The April-foaled filly hails from the family of MGISW Classy Cathy (Private Account).

She's a very nice, precocious filly,” Bayer explained. I really like her attitude. Every time you bring her out to show her, she's always on. She wants to do her job and go forward. She stands up nicely, has a big walk and does everything perfectly for us.”

Don’t Leave Me Tops Pin Oak Dispersal At Fasig-Tipton

Nearly 70 years of careful breeding and racing success – a lifelong passion of Pin Oak Stud's Ms. Josephine Abercrombie – were on display Sunday evening at Newtown Paddocks in Lexington, Ky. A selection of Pin Oak's remaining broodmares, weanlings, and race fillies were offered without reserve by Denali Stud as agent.

The sale topper came in the form of Don't Leave Me (Hip 18), a 9-year-old graded stakes winning daughter of Lemon Drop Kid. Woodford Thoroughbreds purchased the mare, who was offered in foal to Horse of the Year Authentic, for $650,000 (video).

Don't Leave Me is out of Grade 1 winner See How She Runs, and has produced two foals to date, including I'm So Sorry (Uncle Mo), who is placed in one start this year at two, and a weanling filly by Medaglia d'Oro (Hip 19). The latter preceded her dam into the ring, and was purchased by Rigney Racing for $370,000, the top price paid for a weanling during the sale (video).

“We started showing Saturday morning,” said Denali Stud's Craig Bandoroff. “They were here at quarter to eight, and her 23 horses showed 1,056 times… [w]e were hoping that the community would appreciate the quality of the offerings and the quality of Ms. Abercrombie and Clifford's lifetime work, and they did. It was gratifying.”

Point System (Hip 5), a seven-year-old stakes winner by Pin Oak's own Broken Vow, sold for $420,000 to Shepherd Equine Advisors, agent from Larry Hirsch (video).

The second highest price of the evening, Point System was offered in foal to Eclipse champion Improbable. To date, Point System is represented by a yearling colt by Candy Ride (ARG).

Late in the session, Eaton Sales took home multiple Grade 1 placed stakes winner Gold Medal Dancer (Hip 23) for $400,000 (video). The 11-year-old daughter of Medaglia d'Oro is represented by Dance Recital, a winner this year at 4, as well as an unstarted 2-year-old in Dance Routine, and a weanling colt by Candy Ride (ARG).

“This has been her baby for 60-plus years,” added longtime Pin Oak Stud farm manager Clifford Barry of Abercrombie. “It's kind of nice to coming in tonight and showcase… [T]here are mares here today she's got three, four generations of. Very, very proud of her.”

Of three racing and/or broodmare prospects on offer, Fascination (Hip 20) took the top spot, selling for $185,000 to Harbut Bloodstock. A daughter of two-time and current leading sire Into Mischief, Fascination placed third in her debut this year at three. Her dam, Whimiscality (Hip 10), in foal to Collected, sold earlier in the session to BBA Ireland for $200,000.

All told, 23 horses sold for $3,999,000, good for an average of $173,870 and a median of $130,000.

Pin Oak Stud Dispersal Draws a Crowd

LEXINGTON, KY – A large group of interested parties turned out at Fasig-Tipton as an offering of 23 mares and foals from the dispersal of Josephine Abercrombie's historic Pin Oak Stud went through the sales ring Sunday evening at Newtown Paddocks. Bloodstock agent Lincoln Collins, bidding on behalf of John and Susan Sykes's Woodford Thoroughbreds, made the evening's highest bid when going to $650,000 to acquire multiple graded stakes winner Don't Leave Me (Lemon Drop Kid) (hip 18). The 9-year-old mare sold in foal to 2020 Horse of the Year Authentic.

The 23 head, which were offered without reserve, sold for a gross of $3,999,000. The average was $173,870 and the median was $130,000.

“We were very pleased by the reception,” said Craig Bandoroff, whose Denali Stud handled the consignment. “We started showing Saturday morning and they were here at 7:45. We had 23 horses show 1,056 times. Broodmares don't do that. Foals do that. We were hoping that the community would appreciate the quality of the offerings and the quality of Mrs. Abercrombie and Clifford [Barry]'s lifetime work. And they did.”

Barry, who has served as Abercrombie's farm manager for over 30 years, agreed the evening was bittersweet.

“This has been Mrs. Abercrombie's baby for 60-plus years,” Barry said at the close of the auction Sunday. “It's kind of nice to come in here tonight and showcase the last part of it and make something happen and make a legacy. There are some mares in here that she's had for three and four generations. I'm very, very proud for her and a I have a debt of gratitude myself. I've been on pretty much a magic carpet ride for 35 years. I'm very proud of my staff. It came together very quickly. It was a pretty tough day when we told them what we were going to do. Friday was a tougher day putting those mares on the trailer. I won't deny it.”

Among the crowd at Newtown Paddocks Sunday were two of Abercrombie's longtime trainers, Graham Motion and Mike Stidham, as well as industry participants like Gabriel Duignan, Adrian Regan, Doug Arnold, Peter O'Callaghan, Chris Baccari, Terry Gabriel, John Greathouse, John Dowd, Mike Akers, Tami Bobo, Archie St. George, and Marette Farrell, many of whom had spent the day shopping and selling across town ahead of Monday's first session of the Keeneland September Yearling Sale.

Both Barry and Bandoroff gave credit to Fasig-Tipton for putting together an unorthodox bloodstock sale.

“I want to take my hat off to Fasig-Tipton,” Bandoroff said. “It was their idea to do this. I was somewhat skeptical–it was out of the box, but Boyd [Browning] and Bayne [Welker] and Clifford said we could do it. And this sales company is unbelievable. They try hard and the answer is never no. The answer might be let me think about it, but it's always yes.”

Welker added, “We thought all along that we could do a stand-up sale to shine the light on the achievements of Mrs. Abercrombie and Pin Oak and what it's done over the years. We thought the consignment and the horses would take care of themselves. And they certainly did.”

Collins Takes Her Home

Don't Leave Me, winner of the GIII Ontario Colleen S. and GIII Bourbonette Oaks, proved the most popular of Sunday's 23 offerings. She is out of GI Selene S. winner See How She Runs (Maria's Mon). Her first foal I'm So Sorry (Uncle Mo), a $42,000 Keeneland September yearling last year, was second on debut at Saratoga Aug. 5 for trainer Brian Lynch.

“She's a lovely mare, it's the right pedigree, we like the [covering] sire,” Collins said of the 9-year-old's appeal. “As a commercial operation you have to consider that a lot of times these first-season stallions will be very popular. We have had a general upgrading program. She fit into it and Mr. Sykes was prepared to give it a go.”

Of the mare's final price tag, Collins added, “Mrs. Abercrombie is a great breeder and she's bred all kinds of good horses. You don't argue with people like her and Clifford Barry. When they've got a good one, you've got to pay up for it. It was richly deserved.”

Don't Leave Me had originally been scheduled to go through the ring before her weanling filly by Medaglia d'Oro, but after a last-minute change she followed after that dark bay youngster. Collins was underbidder on the weanling after Denali's Conrad Bandoroff signed for the filly at $370,000 on behalf of Rigney Racing.

“I was underbidder on the weanling,” Collins confirmed. “She was full of class, a beautiful mover. I hope it will end up as a beautiful yearling. If we had bought her for the client we were bidding for, that would have been to race. Inevitably if you love a foal that much, you've got to like the mare as well. In some respects, I wish that the Bandoroffs hadn't switched the order.”

Conrad Bandoroff said options for the session's top-priced weanling were up in the air.

“She is a lovely filly,” Bandoroff said. “We loved her when we saw her at the farm. She's a beautiful filly who presents you with a lot of options. There is a good chance she could end up at [Denali's] Barn 7a at Saratoga, but we will take it day by day. For now she will go back to Denali. We are thrilled to have her at the farm.”

As Bandoroff described plans for the weanling, Barry, standing nearby, jumped in to add, “I'll raise her if you want.” Bandoroff smiled and said, “I might have to take him up on that.”

Point System Joins Highlander Band

Bloodstock agent Clark Shepherd, bidding on behalf of Larry Hirsch, topped early returns at the Pin Oak dispersal when purchasing the 7-year-old mare Point System (Broken Vow) (hip 5) for $420,000. The stakes winner, in foal to champion Improbable, is a daughter of graded stakes winner Brownie Points (Forest Wildcat) and a half-sister to multiple graded winner Synchrony (Tapit) and graded stakes winner Chocolate Kisses (Candy Ride {Arg}), as well as to the dam of multiple graded-placed 'TDN Rising Star' Dream Shake (Twirling Candy).

“We will foal her out and we will see,” Shepherd said of plans for the mare. “Obviously we will have different plans if it's a colt or a filly. If it's a filly, you'd want to keep that family around. And if it's a colt, we will see how he develops and it could be 100% a commercial play. That's the plan as of right now.”

Hirsch, of Highlander Training Center, has a small broodmare band primarily focused on racing, according to Shepherd.

“He keeps some fillies that he races, but there is no scheme of building a big commercial broodmare band,” Shepherd said. “Our focus is on racing and if we can breed great racehorses, and in particular hopefully fillies, that would be the big picture.”

Of the dispersal dynamic, Shepherd said, “You come across good horses from great families all the time, but these were all centrally located in one spot. Dispersals tend to take on a certain mystery within themselves. And sometimes you overpay, but I think she was well worth that kind of money.”

Graded stakes winner Gold Medal Dancer (Medaglia d'Oro) (hip 23), in foal to Munnings, was the night's third-priciest offering when selling for $400,000 to Eaton Sales.
