Master of The Seas Another Godolphin Romper In the Woodbine Mile

Twelve months after Modern Games (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) made light work of the race, Godolphin's Master of The Seas (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) proved an equally decisive winner of the GI Ricoh Woodbine Mile for trainer Charlie Appleby and jockey William Buick. With the victory, the homebred has earned a fees-paid berth into the GI Breeders' Cup Mile at Santa Anita in early November, a race won last year by Modern Games.

Drawn the inside gate in a field of just six horses, the 2-5 jolly wasn't the best away and settled at the tail of the field as My Sea Cottage (Ire) (Shalaa {Ire})–one of three starters to carry the hot pink colors of Gary Barber–speared through to take up the running after about a furlong. Master of the Seas raced against the rail early on, but came off the fence and into the clear as they hit the turn, and he had improved to fourth while building up a full head of steam as the field reached the long Woodbine straight. Accelerating nicely approaching the final furlong, Master of the Seas let down beautifully to take it by a convincing 3 3/4 lengths. 'TDN Rising Star' Shirl's Speight (Speightstown) just won a photo for second from longshot Lucky Score (Lookin At Lucky).

Narrowly beaten into second by Poetic Flare (Ire) (Dawn Approach {Ire}) in the G1 QIPCO 2000 Guineas in 2021, Master of the Seas won the G3 Earl of Sefton S. in a single start at four, but has had a more complete season in 2023. The bay wintered in Dubai, winning the G2 Zabeel Mile Jan 20 and was a close third in the G1 Jebel Hatta S. Mar. 4 before finishing well down the field in the G1 Dubai Turf three weeks later. Given plenty of time to regroup, he was exiting a four-length success in the G2 Summer Mile at Ascot July 15.

“He usually breaks pretty fast, for one reason or another he didn't today,” noted Buick. “But there weren't many runners and the pace was even. It's a big, fair track and he's a horse with a turn of foot, so it was kind of my job to navigate a trouble-free passage. He is pretty high maintenance, but everyone at home has done a great job with him. I thought today he was much more the finished article. When he won at Ascot last time, you sort of sensed he was showing his best and getting back to his best form.”

Master of The Seas is the 56th worldwide Grade I/Group 1 winner for the legendary Dubawi and the 83 G1/GISW produced by a daughter of Danehill.

Master of The Seas is the latest Godolphin/Charlie Appleby success story at Woodbine and is not the first from this family to win on this program. His G3 UAE Oaks-winning half-sister Falls of Lora is not only the dam of Cascadian (GB) (New Approach {Ire}), a treble Group 1 winner in Australia for James Cummings, but also of Albahr (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}), impressive winner of the 2021 Summer S.

Firth of Lorne's last listed produce is the 3-year-old filly Sithchean (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}), the long odds-on winner of a novice over the Chelmsford all-weather on her lone racetrack appearance to date Mar. 2.

Lael, DeVaux Sittin’ ‘Pretty’ For Breeders’ Cup Following Natalma

Lael Stables' She Feels Pretty (Karakontie {Jpn}) came with a stinging rally down the center of the E. P. Taylor turf course to punch her ticket to the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf with an impressive victory in Saturday's GI Johnnie Walker Natalma S. at Woodbine. It marks the first elite-level scorer for the barn of Cherie DeVaux.

Sent off at odds of 8-1 while stretching out to the mile off a first-up graduation sprinting over the Ellis Park turf course July 16, the $240,000 Keeneland September acquisition was bumped at the break from an outside barrier and settled just behind midfield and in the slipstream of the well-backed Ozara (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}), from the Summer S.-winning barn of Christophe Clement. Always traveling sweetly with that cover as Golden Canary (Medaglia d'Oro) continued to show the way through a half in :47.01, She Feels Pretty was up into fifth and under a nice John Velazquez hold at the three-eighths. Pulled off heels in upper stretch, She Feels Pretty descended on the leaders with about a furlong to travel and shot clear to score by daylight. The maiden Simply in Front (Summer Front) ran on for second ahead of a slow-starting and favored Dazzling Star (GB) (Blue Point {Ire}) in third. The final time was some 0.36 seconds faster than the Summer S. two races prior.

“I was very confident, I got to say she was feeling very confident,” said Velazquez, winning his first Natalma. “I made sure I put her in a good position behind Dylan Davis [rider of Ozara], a horse that could take me a little way down. When we turned for home, I moved her to the clear and her ears went up and I said, 'Wow, look at this.' I went after her and she instantly responded. The way she did it was very impressive.”

Pedigree Notes:

She Feels Pretty is the 12th worldwide stakes winner, seventh graded winner and second top-level scorer for Karakontie, upset winner of the 2014 GI Breeders' Cup Mile whose lone starter on championship weekend, Spanish Loveaffair, was sixth in the 2020 Juvenile Fillies Turf. She Feels Pretty is the 161st worldwide SW, 74th GSW and 20th Grade I/Group 1 winner out of a daughter of the late, great More Than Ready, and the first by a sire descending from an immediate Storm Cat line.

Arthur Hancock's Stone Farm raised and sold She Feels Pretty to the second Book 4 session of last year's Keeneland September Sale, where she caught the eye of Roy and Gretchen Jackson's high-class operation. Payson Stud acquired dam Summer Sweet for $550,000 as an early 2-year-old from the partial dispersal of the Estate of Sarah Leigh at Keeneland January in 2016, the most expensive horse of racing age during the sale. Payson also gave a sales-topping $700,000 for Summer Sweet's Grade I-placed half-sister Summer Solo (Arch), whose daughter Solo Album (Curlin) won this year's GIII Selene S. over the local synthetic track.

The filly's second dam was a listed winner in France for the late Gerald Leigh and Jonathan Pease–who coincidentally trained Karakontie for the Niarchos Family's Flaxman Holdings–and her other winners included SW Summer Breezing (Langfuhr) and Adirondack Summer (Thunder Gulch). This is also the family of Gerald Leigh's dual French Group 1 winner Act One (GB) (In the Wings {GB}).

The yearling relation to She Feels Pretty, a colt by Good Magic, was purchased for $600,000 by Boardshorts from the Stone Farm draft at Keeneland September this past Thursday. Summer Sweet foaled an American Pharoah filly Apr. 19 and was bred back to Olympiad.

Heartwarming Journey for Carson’s Run’s Connections Continues in Woodbine’s WAYI Summer

Breeders' Cup winner Cody's Wish (Curlin) may be the sport's poster boy for feel-good racing stories, but there's another waiting in the wings as West Point Thoroughbreds and Steven Bouchey's own touching story about Carson's Run (c, 2, Cupid-Hot N Hectic, by Henny Hughes) keeps improving. The 2-year-old colt may be headed to the Breeders' Cup himself after capturing Saturday's GI Bet365 Summer S. at Woodbine, a “Win and You're In” event offering the winner a free berth into the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf at Santa Anita Nov. 3. Like Cody's Wish, Carson's Run was named after a young man who suffers from Wolf-Hirschorn Syndrome.

With the start of the C$500,000 Summer delayed several moments due to a last-minute shoe repair for 9-5 pick My Boy Prince (Cairo Prince), who was coming off a 14-length triumph in the Aug. 27 Simcoe S. over Woodbine's Tapeta, that one set the early :23.46 and :47.10 pace while Carson's Run lingered at the back of the field, saving ground on the inside. Just like in his earlier two starts, Carson's Run was unhurried early and waited patiently to make his move. They came off the turn with My Boy Prince in front on the rail as Carson's Run abruptly hurtled around the middle of the course, about 10 paths wide, with an Arazi-like move in search of a clear run. He sailed on by to win by 2 1/4 lengths, with My Boy Prince holding off the filly Go With Gusto (Medaglia d'Oro)–who finished first but was disqualified in her course and distance debut here Aug.13– for third. Final time for the mile on the lawn was 1:35.70; the Juvenile Turf is the same distance and, like the Summer, open to both colts and fillies.

“He did very well there because he saved all the ground he could and then when he angled him out at the quarter pole, we had to come wide obviously, but that way you don't get any traffic,” said trainer Christophe Clement's assistant Christophe Lorieul. “He had a clear run from quarter pole to the wire and he really showed what he is today.”

Carson's Run, a $170,000 OBS April buy after working :10 1/5, kickstarted his career with a game debut July 29 at Saratoga, chasing early before angling wide and digging in to win by a neck in a performance much like his Summer win. He tried similar tactics in the GIII With Anticipation S., also at the Spa but over heavier going, only to get caught late by the improving filly Gala Brand (Violence) and finish a half-length back. Dylan Davis has been aboard for all three starts.

“Today, we wanted to go with the outside route and keep a clear trip on him,” said Davis. “We saved all the ground going into the turn–nice real big turn here–and he was able to get it done.”

Pedigree Notes:

Coolmore America's Cupid may stand in Kentucky but has had his biggest success to date north of the border, as Carson's Run adds his first Grade I win to Cupid's sire tally to go along with 2021 Canadian champion 2-year-old colt God of Love and 2022 Prince of Wales S. winner Duke of Love. Overall, Cupid has four graded winners among his seven Northern Hemisphere-bred black-type winners.

Henny Hughes, a Storm Cat-line stallion who has stood in Japan since the 2014 season, is finding success as a broodmare sire with both Carson's Run and Beholder's daughter Tamara (Bolt d'Oro) adding Grade I wins in the last week. Among the 21 other stakes winners out of his daughters is champion Monomoy Girl (Tapizar). Interestingly, Carson's Run was bred by Frankfort Park Farm, who co-bred Monomoy Girl.

Hot N Hectic's only other foal is a Volatile colt foaled Jan. 25 of this year. A half-sister to fan favorite MGSW & GISP Rated R Superstar (Kodiak Kowboy), Hot N Hectic was bred to Maxfield for 2024.

Paramount Prince Shoots For Second Leg Of Canadian Triple Crown

On paper, it looks like 8-5 morning line favorite Paramount Prince (Society's Chairman) is the horse to beat in Tuesday's $400,000 Prince of Wales S. at Fort Erie, the second leg of the Canadian Triple Crown. He's perfect around two turns and is coming off a front-running victory in the first leg of the series, the King's Plate. And once again, there doesn't appear to be another horse in the field who can keep this front-runner honest early.

But this race always comes with a handicapping conundrum. How do you pick the winner in a dirt race when not one of the 11 starters has ever won a race over that surface? Most have done their running at Woodbine over the turf courses or the synthetic Tapeta track.

“That's what makes the Canadian Triple Crown so unique,” said Paramount Prince's trainer, Mark Casse. “The first race is on Tapeta, the second is on the dirt and they finish up on the grass in the Breeders' Stakes. We had him all winter at our training center in Ocala and he trained extremely well over the dirt there. I'd be kind of shocked if he didn't handle the dirt. But you never know.”

According to the figures provided by Thoro-Graph, the offspring of Society's Chairman win 16% on the time on dirt and just 13% of the time on synthetic.

Casse has won the Queen's Plate/King's Plate three times, the Prince of Wales four times and the Breeders' Stakes twice. But he has yet to sweep a Canadian Triple Crown, something no horse has done since Wando (Langfuhr) in 2003. The series took a bit of a hit the last two years when the winners of the Queen's Plate skipped the Prince Of Wales. But it looks like the Prince of Wales has rebounded. The 12-horse field is the biggest in 21 years and most of the top Canadian-bred 3-year-old males will be in the race.

Looking to win the Prince of Wales for the fifth time, Casse has every reason to be confident. Paramount Prince, who will be ridden by Patrick Husbands, looks like an improving horse who flourished once sent around two turns. After three straight losses sprinting, he wired the field in the Plate Trial before doing the same in the King's Plate.

“Early on I was very disappointed in him,” Casse said. “This winter I kept saying this is a good horse. The first time I ran him I told (owner) Gary (Barber) that I didn't think he'd get beat. But he disappointed me. He trained great coming into his second race and didn't win either. I think he wants to you to grab him and get into a rhythm. He doesn't do that sprinting.”

Casse has also entered Stayhonor Goodside (Honor Code), who is 10-1 in the morning line and was kept out of the King's Plate.

“I kind of pointed that horse to this race because I thought he has a good dirt pedigree,” Casse said. “But we're all guessing.”

Trainer Michael DePaulo will send out a pair in 4-1 second choice Stanley House (Army Mule) and Cook Kiss (Kantharos). Cook Kiss is one of only two horses in the field that has started on the dirt. He finished second in a dirt allowance in July at Gulfstream. Stanley House was third in the King's Plate, beaten three lengths, and never threatened the winner. Both horses will wear blinkers for the first time.

“We're hoping somebody goes after Paramount Prince at some point. But you never know,” DePaulo said. “Patrick is a cagey rider and might not go to the lead. The Society's Chairmans in general haven't been real big dirt horses that I've seen. But you never know. I put the blinkers on Stanley because he's been a little further than I'd like in most of his races. The other horse, Cook Kiss, he sometimes looks like he's goofing around. I thought blinkers might help. You look at his Ragozin numbers and they're way better than his Beyer numbers because he's always so wide. He ran a mile and three eighths in the Plate.”

Kaukokaipuu (Mr Speaker) went off at 8-1 in the King's Plate only to lose by 37 1/4 lengths. Trainer Ted Holder is willing to try again.

“We haven't missed a beat,” Holder said. “We unfortunately got outdistanced so we ended up on the Alcohol and Gaming Commission's outdistanced vet's list. So, I worked with him, a very slow maintenance work for him to get him off the list. We went over him with the vets to make sure everything was in order and we got the green light, so we are proceeding.”
