Ladies of the Lawn Series Returns at Woodbine

The Ladies of the Lawn series, which will now feature a $250,000 bonus, will return to Woodbine in 2022. Launched in 2019, the Ladies of the Lawn Series consists of three premier turf races for fillies and mares: the July 24 GII Dance Smartly S., the Aug. 21 GII Canadian S. and the Oct. 8 GI E.P. Taylor S.

The owner of any horse to sweep all three races will receive a $250,000 bonus. Should no horse sweep the series, a $50,000 bonus will be paid out to the connections of the horse that accumulates the most points during the series.

“The Ladies of the Lawn Series has received tremendous feedback over the last few years,” said Tim Lawson, Director of Thoroughbred Racing for Woodbine. “The addition of a $250,000 bonus should provide not only incentive for owners and trainers to point their fillies and mares at these premier races, but also raise the profile of this series with horseplayers, fans and racing participants.”

Canadian Trainer Suspended 20 Years for Drug Violations

Trainer Robert Gerl has been suspended 20 years and fined $100,000 after two horses under his care tested positive for ostarine, the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) announced Tuesday.

The drug acts much like anabolic steroids in that it is used to create anabolic activity and enhance muscle growth by directly stimulating androgen receptors. A non-therapeutic substance, it has not been approved for human use or consumption in the U.S., or in any other country.

The AGCO alleges that two horses trained by Gerl, Arafat (War On Gaza) and Komunist (Conquest Curlinate), tested positive for the drug. Komunist tested positive for ostarine after finishing fourth in a $10,000 maiden claimer on Oct. 15 at Woodbine. Arafat's post-race positive involves an Oct. 7 maiden optional claimer in which he finished second. Neither horse has raced since the alleged infractions.

In the press release announcing the suspensions, the AGCO said that the substance was also found in one of the Gerl-trained horses in out-of-competition tests, but did not specify which of the two horses were involved in those tests.

“The health and welfare of racehorses, and the integrity of racing are of primary concern to the AGCO,” said Tom Mungham, the chief executive officer and registrar for the AGCO. “We will continue to take all appropriate actions to protect horses and maintain the fairness of racing. The administration of prohibited substances, especially non-therapeutic drugs, have no business in the sport, and positive test results can lead to severe consequences for licence holders.”

The two horses have been disqualified and the purse money they earned must be returned and redistributed.
According to equineline.com, Gerl has been training since 2007 and has a career record of 65-for-1132. He was 0-for-25 in both 2021 and 2020. He does not have a start this year. He has never had a starter in a stakes race.

Honor Code Juvenile Romps at Woodbine

2nd-Woodbine, C$107,630, Msw, 5-21, 2yo, 4 1/2f (AWT), :51.58, ft, 5 1/2 lengths.
STAYHONOR GOODSIDE (c, 2, Honor Code–Nicki Knew {SW, $386,114}, by Tethra) was favored at 6-5 in this debut and made it look like a gift with a dominant debut score at Woodbine Saturday. Away alertly, the $85,000 KEESEP buy contested the early pace and slammed the door on his rivals in the lane to win for fun by 5 1/2 lengths over Captive Silence (Silent Name {Jpn}). The winner is a half to Imperial Dream (Stormy Atlantic), SW, $156,137 and is the first winner for his dam since that one, Nicki Knew only producing two surviving foals in the eight years between them. There was no report in 2021 but Stayhonor Goodside has a 2022 half-sister by Caravaggio. This is the family of millionaire and MG1SW Hawk Wing (Woodman), GSW turned group-stakes producer Race for the Stars (Fusaichi Pegasus), and Canadian Horse of the Year & Champion grass horse Thornfield (Sky Classic). The colt's name came about by way of a contest on the TDN Writers' Room podcast, when D.J. Stable General Manager Jon Green challenged listeners to come up with a clever name based on the colt's breeding as part of a promotion sponsored by Lane's End Farm. The winning entry was submitted by Skip Anderson, a champion Hampshire sheep breeder from North Dakota. Sales history: $85,000 Ylg '21 KEESEP. Lifetime Record: 1-1-0-0, $48,142. Insight Outcomes: Adora Steals the Show at Woodbine

It was all Woodbine this past weekend for Insights, with one filly winning impressively first out and another finishing a bang-up third. Each hails from a storied breeding program and will likely improve with some added distance off their sprint debuts.

SATURDAY'S INSIGHTS: $450k Into Mischief Firster Debuts At Woodbine

2nd-Woodbine, C$92,730, Msw, 5-14, 2yo, f, 4 1/2f (AWT), :52.41, ft, 4 3/4 lengths.

The Sam-Son legacy continues to deliver as ADORA (f, 2, Into Mischief-Southern Ring {MGSW-Can, SP-USA, $343,998}, by Speightstown) burst onto the racing scene at Woodbine. Bred by the iconic farm and making her career bow for Tracy Farmer, the bay 2-year-old battled for the early lead from the outside, dispensed her challenger and was already 2 1/2 lengths the best at the :46.17 half, then sailed home unthreatened. Farmer plucked her out of the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga sale for $450,000 before sending her to Hall of Famer Mark Casse. Adora's dam was an $875,000 Determined Stud purchase at the Keeneland January sale last year as part of the Sam-Son dispersal. The winner is a fourth-generation Sam-Son bred who traces directly to 1956 Broodmare of the Year Swoon. Adora's granddam is a full-sister to the great-granddam of 'TDN Rising Star' and highly regarded recent GI Kentucky Derby contestant Messier (Empire Maker). SUNDAY'S INSIGHTS: Godolphin Unveils Secret Spice Half At Woodbine

4th-Woodbine, C$125,200, Msw, 5-15, 3yo, f, 7f (AWT), 1:23.14, ft, 9 1/2 lengths.

The Juddmonte-bred EPHRATA (GB) (f, 3, Ghostzapper–Grand Jete {GB} {GSW & MGISP, $335,759}, by Dansili {GB}), sold for 200,000gns at the Tattersalls December Mare Sale and since transferred across the pond from the John Gosden yard to the Josie Carroll barn, upended the debut of Aioli (Medaglia d'Oro). Aioli had been scheduled for unveiling in a 5 1/2-furlong maiden at Laurel on the grass nine days prior, but scratched when the race was moved off the turf and was rerouted here. She had an educational trip, breaking nicely from the outside, getting shuffled back and looking beaten in seventh or eighth at the top of lane, then maneuvering through traffic to finish with enthusiasm and nab the show spot. The Godolphin homebred hails from the Mike Stidham barn. She is out of $3.1-million Keeneland September purchase Chimayo (A.P. Indy), dam of 2019 GI Beholder Mile S. winner Secret Spice (Discreet Cat). Secret Spice hammered at the 2019 Fasig-Tipton November sale for $1.4 million to Katsumi Yoshida. Chimayo's half-sister produced 2018 Canadian Horse of the Year Wonder Gadot by the same Darley sire as Aioli and 2019 GI La Brea S. winner Hard Not to Love to the cover of Darley sire Hard Spun.
