Outadore Rallies To Win Woodstock Stakes At Woodbine

Jockey Justin Stein doubled up in this weekend's stakes action at Woodbine when the Wesley Ward-trained Outadore rallied to victory in the $125,000 Woodstock Stakes for three-year-olds on Sunday afternoon.

“I'm just fortunate to be on the right horse on the right day,” said Stein, who also won the first stakes of the meet on Saturday, with Star Shoot winner Can't Buy Love for conditioner Michael Trombetta.

In the Woodstock, Stein had Outadore positioned mid-pack before sending the Outwork colt three-wide into contention on the turn and kicking clear down the lane to win in 1:09.77 over six furlongs on the Tapeta.

Outadore paid $5.90 to win as the slight second choice to Jaxon Traveler, who appeared on the lead briefly at the start and finished 1-1/4 lengths behind the winner in second. Ward also picked up third money with Chasing Artie closing from the back under Kazushi Kimura. They were followed by Sky's Not Falling, Master Spy, Derzkii, and pacesetter Saturday George (:23.21, :45.82).

“He broke sharp, he broke hard, but we were out-run, out-footed early,” said Stein. “He settled into stride in behind and when I called on him, he really kicked. He dug in, he's a runner. He's a nice horse.”

Following up a victory in the Animal Kingdom Stakes in late March at Turfway Park, Outadore is now two-for-two to start his sophomore season. Owned by Breeze Easy LLC, the Kentucky-bred gave way to finish third in the Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf last year and now has four wins from six career starts and more than a half-million dollars in purse earnings.

Souper Stonehenge Takes Jacques Cartier Stakes At Woodbine

Souper Stonehenge put an end to Pink Lloyd's Jacques Cartier reign as he took off down the stretch to claim the 2021 edition of the Grade 3 stakes event for sprinters 4 years old and up on Sunday afternoon at Woodbine Racetrack in Toronto, Ontario.

Jockey Patrick Husbands teamed up with the Mark Casse trainee, who was the 3-2 second choice in the six-horse field.

After pressing the pace early on, Souper Stonehenge took command near the quarter pole from front-runner Readyforprimetime with splits of :22.72 and :44.93 flashing up on the board.

With Daisuke Fukumoto picking up the mount, four-time Jacques Cartier champ Pink Lloyd raced between horses at the back of the tightly knit bunch and surged into third on the turn, but Souper Stonehenge dashed home a four-length winner in 1:08.89 for six furlongs.

Pink Lloyd, who set the 1:08.05 track record in the 2018 edition of the Jacques Cartier, settled for second in his nine-year-old debut as the 6-5 favorite. Malibu Secret, last year's Jacques Cartier runner-up, came through inside to finish third while Joker On Jack, Readyforprimetime, and Dixie's Gamble rounded out the order of finish.

Souper Stonehenge returned $5 to win and $2.70 t0 place. There was no show wagering. The five-year-old Speightstown gelding, who finished third in the Grade 1 Carter Handicap at Aqueduct in early April, earned his first win of the year from five starts.

“Going into this race, I breezed this horse about four times and I think he's a world-beater at Woodbine,” said Husbands. “This horse is the real deal right now.

“I rode him as the best horse in the race. I respect 'The Boss.' Any time you can beat Pink Lloyd at Woodbine Racetrack, especially sprinting, he's the world-beater, he's the champion here. So I knew it would take a real Pink Lloyd to beat this horse today.”

Souper Stonehenge, who finished second in last year's Grade 2 Kennedy Road Stakes at Woodbine ahead of Pink Lloyd, now sports a career record reading 4-4-1 from 15 starts. The lion's share of the $150,000 purse boosted his bankroll over the $300,000 mark for owner/breeder Live Oak Plantation.

Husbands, who won 70 races including 10 stakes during last year's shortened season, was pleased to land the connections a stakes victory after the pandemic delayed the start of the meet.

“It's amazing to be back at Woodbine – it's a beautiful place, a good environment,” said the veteran reinsman. “It's amazing how much stress the owners went through, through the pandemic. They waited so long, putting all this money into these horses and they didn't know when the races were going to start. You've got to tip your hat off to the owners.”

Can’t Buy Love Rallies Late To Win Star Shoot At Woodbine

Can't Buy Love kicked off the 2021 season's stakes action, rallying late to win the $125,000 Star Shoot six-furlong sprint for three-year-old fillies at Woodbine Race Course in Toronto, Ontario.

Justin Stein worked out the winning trip aboard the Michael Trombetta trainee in her Woodbine debut after she was claimed for $75,000 at Gulfstream Park over the winter by R. Larry Johnson.

Polyanthus was joined on top by 2-5 favorite Drunk Dial, both coming off successful career debuts in 2020, and they traded blows through fractions of :21.69 and :44.09 with a quick-leaving California Lily stalking the pace and striking in the final furlong. Meanwhile, Can't Buy Love settled off the pace in sixth before launching wide into contention on the turn and surging to victory. The final time was 1:09.47.

“They were moving along, the field in front of me. The favorite actually broke bad to the outside and I had a chance to kind of make that horse have to do a little extra early and then she [Can't Buy Love] just settled into stride and waited for her cue,” said Stein after the race. “I could tell she wanted to win, she was surging at those horses and she wanted to be at the wire first today.”

Sent postward at odds of 12-1 in the field of eight that include four Mark Casse trainees, the supplemented shipper Can't Buy Love returned $27.30 to win. Dirty Dangle nosed out California Lily in a place photo less than a length behind the winner, while the season-debuting Sweet Souper Sweet picked up fourth money for the Trombetta stable finishing ahead of early trailer La Libertee. Polyanthus, Drunk Dial, and Magical Soul completed the order.

Bred in Kentucky by Kenneth and Sarah Ramsey, the Twirling Candy-Pay the Kitten filly earned her first win of the season in her fifth outing and improved her lifetime record to 3-1-1 from nine starts.

Boardroom Graduates To Graded Stakes Winner In Whimsical

With the action heating up at Woodbine Racetrack near Toronto, Ontario, LNJ Foxwoods' 4-year-old filly Boardroom earned her first graded stakes title in the $150,000 Grade 3 Whimsical Stakes co-featured on Saturday's card.

With regular rider Luis Contreras up for Hall of Fame trainer Josie Carroll, Boardroom made her seasonal debut a winning one in the six-furlong stakes event for fillies and mares four years old and up.

Golden Ami, the winner's stablemate, held a narrow lead while flanked by 2019 Champion Female Sprinter Summer Sunday and the reigning divisional champ Artie's Princess through fractions of :21.93 and :43.93 over the fast Tapeta surface. Following close to the pace just behind the top trio, Contreras had positioned Boardroom to strike down the stretch and the talented filly out-finished the competitive bunch to score by a neck in a sizzling time of 1:08.35.

“Reading the program and by the way the track has been playing, that was pretty much the thing to do. Everything worked perfect. Every single step of the race I was right there,” said Contreras. “She's so amazing.”

Boardroom paid $5.70 to win as the 9-5 second choice. Our Secret Agent closed widest from the back to finish second, three-quarters of a length ahead of Amalfi Coast, who rallied between rivals to take third prize. Golden Ami finished fourth, a neck back, followed by 6-5 favorite Artie's Princess and Summer Sunday. Chart and Sav were scratched.

“I think she's a really special filly and the race set up beautifully for her, Luis sat patiently just off of them and the filly proved what she is,” said Carroll. “I wasn't [surprised how close she was] with the way this track is playing. This track is very speedy today, so she was a little closer than maybe we had anticipated prior, but the way the day's been unfolding, I wasn't that surprised.”

Boardroom put together a 3-1-1 record while earning more than $140,000 during her debut season last year as a three-year-old despite a few eventful trips. The Kentucky-bred daughter of Commissioner had closed her five-race 2020 campaign by winning the Duchess Stakes and finishing a head shy of Artie's Princess in the Grade 2 Bessarabian.
