Derby Day at Woodbine Tickets On Sale

Woodbine's 5th annual Derby Day Party will take place Saturday, May 4 and tickets are now on sale, the track announced via release Monday.

The event will feature a livestream from Churchill Downs, food, fashion, and live racing on site highlighted by the GIII Whimsical S. Included with a ticket purchase are complimentary food and dessert stations as well as a mint julep in a solid copper cup. Derby-style attire is highly encouraged and there will be a “best dressed' contest, photo booth, and various other activities on the day.

A viewing party will take place in Woodbine's Turf Lounge, a newly renovated space on the second floor, formerly Favourites, showcasing a panoramic view of the racetrack.

Tickets are $110 per person and are available for purchase here.

Sunday’s Racing Insights: Homebreds Debut At Gulfstream, Reigning King’s Plate Winner Returns

SF Racing's MONT SAINT MICHEL (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) makes her inaugural voyage for Brendan Walsh after she started her work regimen at Turfway in early December and then moved to Palm Meadows. The homebred is out of SP Black Dahlia (GB) (Dansili {GB}), who is also responsible for third place GI Breeders' Cup Mile runner Lope Y Fernandez (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}).

Also making the post is Alpha Delta homebred Highland Light (Uncle Mo) for trainer Chad Brown. The dark bay's dam GSW Summer Raven (Summer Squall) produced GIII Holy Bull S. champ Winslow Homer (Unbridled's Song) and his full-brother GSW Misconnect. Her most successful offspring is MGSW/MGISP Lewis Bay (Berandini), who earned over $1.1 million on the racetrack. TJCIS PPS

Just before the Sunday finale in Hallandale, Paramount Prince (Society's Chairman) returns to the races after he took home last year's King's Plate S. at Woodbine. King’s Plate Highlights Woodbine’s 2024 Stakes Schedule

Anchored by the 165th running of the King's Plate, Woodbine's 2024 stakes schedule features 38 graded races, four of them Grade I events. The track's stakes schedule this year is missing the GI Canadian International, which was put on hiatus, “after review and consideration of industry and logistical challenges,” according to a Woobine press release.

In another change to the track's traditional line-up of stakes, the $750,000 GI E. P. Taylor S. will be moved up three weeks and will be run on a Sept. 14 card which also includes the $1-million GI Woodbine Mile, $500,000 GI Johnnie Walker Natalma S. and $500,000 GI bet365 Summer S.

The $1-million King's Plate will be run Aug. 17, while the $500,000 Woodbine Oaks will be held July 20. The Oaks is the first leg of the Canadian Triple Tiara, which is completed by the Aug. 10 $250,000 Bison City S. and Sept. 8 $250,000 Wonder Where S.

The Canada Day Racing Festival will be held June 29. The stakes-filled card includes the GII Highlander S., GII Nassau S., GIII Dominion Day S., GIII Selene S. and GIII Marine S.

Ontario Mare Purchase Program 2024 Funds Fully Dispersed

The $800,000 allocated to the Ontario Thoroughbred Improvement Program's Mare Purchase and Recruitment Programs has been exhausted for the year. The program provides Ontario residents with 50% of the purchase price–up to a maximum of C$25,000–per in-foal mares purchased either online or in person at a recognized public auction outside of Ontario, with progeny of 2024 to foal in the province.

“It's a good incentive,” David Clancy, a long-time owner and breeder, and owner of Toronto-based accounting firm Clancy CPA & Co, said of the Mare Purchase Program. “Some of my better mares are getting a bit older now, so I was looking to upscale my mares a bit with some younger stock, so that's why I decided to [make use of the program] this year.”

Clancy purchased three mares in two Kentucky sales, with help from the Mare Purchase Program.

He acquired Carta de Oro (Medaglia d'Oro) for $170,000 and Marge Takes Charge (Empire Maker) for $92,000 at the 2023 Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale, and Daddy Issues (Scat Daddy) for $48,000 at last week's Fasig-Tipton Kentucky Winter Mixed Sale.

Owners from across North America shipped mares to Ontario to foal as part of the Mare Recruitment Program, taking advantage of the “Ontario Bred” status foaling in the province confers.

“Ontario, I think, is a good place to breed,” said Clancy. “And, ultimately, the horse will run at Woodbine, and Woodbine has pretty good purses overall, I think.”
