Royal Patronage Out For The Year

Royal Patronage (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}), who finished last of eight after being struck into in the G1 Vertem Futurity Trophy S. at Doncaster on Saturday, will not race again this season and will return for a 3-year-old campaign. The Highclere Thoroughbred Racing-owned colt won the G3 Acomb S. at York in August and added the G2 Juddmonte Royal Lodge S. at Newmarket on Sept. 25.

Harry Herbert, managing director for owners Highclere Thoroughbred Racing, said, “Unfortunately he was struck into and returned with a nasty gash just above his hock. The jockey [Jason Hart] was very happy with him travelling, but he said he felt him wobble behind and he obviously eased him down immediately and pulled him up.

“We were obviously very disappointed. It was too bad to be true and watching it–I was thinking 'what's going on here', and feared the worst watching him being pulled up.

“These things happen–it's just very unfortunate that it happened in a Group 1 race, where you hope you've got a chance. He'll have the winter off and he'll be back, hopefully for a Derby trial in the spring.”

Perfect Power Camp Mulling Options

Dual Group 1 winner Perfect Power (Ire) (Ardad {Ire}), who won Saturday's G1 Juddmonte Middle Park S. at Newmarket, may be put away for the winter, rather than make another start as his connections consider their options. Sheikh Rashid Dalmook Al Maktoum's colt graduated at second asking at Hamilton prior to winning the G2 Norfolk S. at Royal Ascot on June 17. Only fifth in the G2 Richmond S. at Goodwood at the end of July, Perfect Power rebounded with a 1 1/4-length win in the G1 Darley Prix Morny on Aug. 22, prior to his Middle Park win.

“He's come out of it well. I'm pleased with him. He's a pretty straightforward guy to deal with,” said trainer Richard Fahey. “I've got to speak to Sheikh Rashid. We haven't really sat down and had a chat yet, but it wouldn't surprise me if he was probably finished for the year.”

In 2022, Fahey is looking to step the bay up in trip with an eye to next year's Classics.

“We'll run him in one of the trials,” the trainer added. “We'll see how he winters first and just get him going and see which route we're going.”

Saffron Beach Benched, BC Off Table

Saffron Beach (Ire) (New Bay {GB}), a Group 3 winner in two starts, will skip an intended engagement in the Breeders’ Cup and will instead point to next year and the G1 English 1000 Guineas. Trained by Jane Chapple-Hyam, the chestnut won on debut at Newmarket in September and then saluted in the G3 Oh So Sharp S. there on Oct. 9.

“She’s going to have a rest now, before she comes back for the Nell Gwyn and the Guineas,” said trainer Jane Chapple-Hyam. “The main reason we’re not going is the owners wouldn’t be able to attend, and also she’d had two quick runs, so it’s best for her that she has a break with next year in mind. We’ll have the opportunity to travel with her next year.

“She’s just a natural. She was a late developer–but as soon as she got fit, the fitter she got the better she got. Looking at her pedigree, most have got better with age, so that’s what we’ve got to look forward to. That’s why I think the best thing to do is rug her up now, and look forward to next year.”

The Revenant Enters Winter Quarters

Saturday’s G1 Queen Elizabeth II S. hero The Revenant (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) has emerged from his QIPCO British Champions Day test in good order and will not start again this year. Besides the QEII, the 5-year-old gelding also landed the G2 Prix Daniel Wildenstein on Arc Weekend this term, his second edition of the race.

“He’s back in his box and very happy–he came out of the race well,” said trainer Francis-Henri Graffard. “The QEII was the plan since the race last year. Obviously we had to miss a big part of the season, and our patience was rewarded. He had a very good comeback in the Wildenstein and came on a lot for the race. He produced a very good performance.

“We will wait until next year now–we won’t travel abroad and will stick to Europe. Hopefully we will be able to run him in the spring and the autumn. He has won on good ground, but obviously he can perform at a very high level on soft and heavy.”
