Lord North Looking to Build on Historic Exploits

Lord North (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) might not be the most talented horse his breed-shaping sire has ever produced, but few can claim to have shown the same longevity as John and Thady Gosden's stable stalwart, the star name among 22 entries for the G3 BetUK Winter Derby at Southwell on Saturday, February 24.

Successful on his sole two-year-old start at Redcar in October 2018, HH Sheikh Zayed bin Mohammed Racing's Lord North embarks on his seventh year in training at Clarehaven Stables with relatively few miles on the clock for one of his age, boasting a career record of 10 wins from 20 starts.

After climbing through the ranks in handicaps as a three-year-old, notably winning the prestigious Cambridgeshire at Newmarket, Lord North took his form to a new level altogether during the 2020 campaign when he won the G3 Brigadier Gerard S. at Haydock and G1 Prince of Wales's S. at Royal Ascot, beating the multiple top-level winners Addeybb (Ire), Barney Roy (GB) and Japan (GB).

That remains Lord North's only Group 1 victory on European soil, but his subsequent exploits in the Middle East have guaranteed his place in history as the first three-time winner of the G1 Dubai Turf at Meydan. His £6.3 million in career earnings also makes him the richest-ever racehorse by Dubawi ahead of Benbatl (GB) (£5.9 million), whose three Group 1 wins included the 2018 Dubai Turf.

Lord North–who had the Lord North H. run in his honour at Meydan on Friday, January 12–has been on the sidelines since March last year when his trademark turn of foot sealed him his third straight win in the Dubai Turf, beating Danon Beluga (Jpn), previously Group 1-placed in Japan, by three quarters of a length.

A few weeks earlier Lord North had returned from eight months off with an emphatic success in the Winter Derby, while his dead-heat with Panthalassa (Jpn) in the 2022 Dubai Turf followed a runner-up finish when returning from an even longer absence at Lingfield.

All roads surely lead back to Meydan for the eight-year-old Lord North, who could try to complete a remarkable four-timer in the Dubai Turf on Saturday, March 30, though it won't quite be the usual tried-and-tested path if he takes up his entry in the Winter Derby along the way, with that Group 3 set to be run at Southwell for the first time this year.

The other Group 1 winner among the 22 entries is the William Haggas-trained Dubai Honour (Ire) (Pride of Dubai {Aus}), who won the G1 Ranvet S. and G1 Queen Elizabeth S. in Australia in the first part of 2023, while there would arguably be no more fascinating runner than the long-absent Eydon (Ire) (Olden Times {GB}), last seen since finishing fourth in the 2022 G1 2000 Guineas when trained by Roger Varian.

Now in the care of Andrew Balding, Eydon needs to prove that he retains all his ability after such a significant absence, but there is certainly nothing wrong with his Newmarket form which saw him chase home a trio of multiple Group 1 winners in Coroebus (Ire), Native Trail (GB) and Luxembourg (Ire).

Balding said, “Eydon has a very high level of form, although it has been some time since he was last on the track. He has had a few niggles, but we are really pleased with him at the moment and the Winter Derby is very much the plan. The intention is to go straight there without a run–we feel that is the right thing to do.”

Alenquer To Begin Campaign In Winter Derby

Alenquer (Fr) (Adlerflug {Ger}), the winner of last year's G2 King Edward VII S. at Royal Ascot, will begin his 5-year-old campaign in the G3 Winter Derby at Lingfield on Feb. 26.

After his Royal Ascot triumph, the William Haggas-trained Alenquer finished third in the G1 Grand Prix de Paris and second in the G1 Juddmonte International. He wrapped up his campaign with a ninth-place finish in the heavy ground G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe.

“He's a nice horse,” Haggas said. “He ran in the Arc, which he probably shouldn't have done, but he still ran a good race and he's a pretty useful horse. He won't run before the Winter Derby. He'll run in the Winter Derby and will hopefully go on to run in Dubai in the Sheema Classic.”

Haggas also entered My Oberon (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) and Grocer Jack (Ger) (Oasis Dream {GB}) in the Winter Derby, but said the race is a back-up for that pair, who are being prepared for the G1 Saudi Cup, with the Neom Turf Cup also an option for Grocer Jack.

Gosden Strikes For A Third Winter Derby

Godolphin's Forest of Dean (GB) (Iffraaj {GB}) had finished adrift of Marco Botti trainee Felix (GB) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) in both starts this term and stepped forward to exact revenge on that familiar foe in Saturday's G3 Betway Winter Derby Trial at Lingfield, providing John Gosden with a record-breaking third renewal of the fledgling 10-furlong test. Successful in four of seven starts in 2019, he was under wraps until running third in a Jan. 11 Wolverhampton conditions heat on belated return before filling the same spot in the Feb. 6 Listed Winter Derby Trial over course and distance last time. The 10-3 third favourite accepted a tow from Johnny Drama (Ire) (Lilbourne Lad {Ire}) through halfway. Bounding to the front soon after passing the three-furlong marker, he poached a decisive lead off the home turn and kept on strongly under late urging to hold the late thrust of Felix by 3/4-of-a-length.

“He's definitely on an upward curve and Rab [Havlin] rode him beautifully,” the winning trainer said. “When he got to the top of the hill he said 'I'm gonna steal this' and kept him rolling. He's a brave little horse who was off for over 400 days after having problems following his run at Newbury [in Sept. 2019]. I think the [Apr. 2] Easter Classic over a mile-and-a-quarter [on All-Weather Championships Finals Day] might be more his scene than the [one-mile] Lincoln.”

Pedigree Notes

Forest of Dean is the fourth of eight foals produced by the dual stakes-placed Forest Crown (GB) (Royal Applause {GB}) and the March-foaled bay is a half-brother to G2 Prix de Sandringham second Golden Crown (GB) (Siyouni {Fr}) and G3 Athasi S. third Rionach (GB) (Sea the Stars {Ire}). From a family featuring GISW sire Storm Cat (Storm Bird) and dual Group 1 winner Reckless Abandon (GB) (Exchange Rate), he is also kin to a yearling colt by Wootton Bassett (GB) and a weanling colt by Lope de Vega {Ire}). His dam is a half-sister to G1 Racing Post Trophy-winning sire Crowded House (GB) (Rainbow Quest) and to the dam of MGISW distaffer Ticker Tape (GB) (Royal Applause {GB}) and G1 Prix Maurice de Gheest hero Brando (GB) (Pivotal {GB}).

Jazz Ready For Winter Derby Test

Pattern-race action returns to Europe for the first time this year with Lingfield playing host to the £55,000 G3 Betway Winter Derby over 10 furlongs. Bill and Tim Gredley's homebred Father of Jazz (GB) (Kingman {GB}) makes his black-type bow and the former Michael Bell incumbent will endeavour to make it four in a row for Roger Varian. He lines up off an impressive handicap score over course and distance earlier in the month and the trainer is hopeful of further improvement from the 4-year-old. “Father of Jazz is a gorgeous horse whose looks match his pedigree,” Varian said. “His progression this winter has come as no surprise as he has always looked a smart horse at home. He lacks a bit of experience compared to his rivals, but I think on ability he is not out of place in this race. Hopefully he can handle the occasion and if he does I'm sure he'll put up a very good performance.”

Fellow Newmarket conditioner John Gosden seeks a record third renewal and sends forth Godolphin's Listed Winter Derby Trial third Forest of Dean (GB) (Iffraaj {GB}) for the hat-trick bid. However, he requires a swift upgrade in fortune to overturn recent form with Marco Botti trainee Felix (GB) (Lope de Vega {Ire}), who has had his measure twice in recent weeks.

The quintet of contenders is completed by five-time handicap scorer Power of States (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}), representing Hugo Palmer, and King Power Racing's Listed Wild Flower S. winner Johnny Drama (Ire) (Lilbourne Lad {Ire}).
