FULL-SIBLING TO CLASSIC EMPIRE DEBUTS

3rd-GP, $50K, Msw, 3yo, 6f, 1:08p.m.

China Horse Club and WinStar Farm's HARVARD (Pioneerof the Nile), a full-brother to champion Classic Empire, makes his career bow Sunday in Hallandale. Classic Empire was named champion juvenile colt of 2016 after victories in the GI Claiborne Breeders' Futurity S. and GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile. He captured the GI Arkansas Derby at three and was second in the GI Preakness S. before retiring to Ashford Stud. China Horse Club privately acquired his dam Sambuca Classica (Cat Thief) a short time later and her 2017 Candy Ride (Arg) filly summoned $775,000 at the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Sale. Sambuca Classica is also the dam of stakes winners Uptown Twirl (Twirling Candy) and Anytime Magic (Fusaichi Pegasus); and SP Exclamation Point (Concord Point).

Klaravich Stables' Publicly Available (Liam's Map) debuts in this spot for Chad Brown. The $275,000 KEESEP purchase is out of a half-sister to Grade I-winning millionaire Dream of Summer (Siberian Summer), dam of Grade I winners Creative Cause (Giant's Causeway) and Vexatious (Giant's Causeway); and MGSW & GISP Destin (Giant's Causeway).

Robert and Lawana Low's $700,000 OBSOPN buy Dupuis (Distorted Humor) makes his second start in this test after finishing eighth in the slop over track and trip Feb. 6. TJCIS PPs

Life is Good On Track for San Felipe

China Horse Club and WinStar Farm's Life is Good (Into Mischief) tuned up for an expected start in the Mar. 6 GII San Felipe S. with a five-furlong work in 1:00.80 (4/33) at Santa Anita Monday morning.

“He went extremely well,”  trainer Bob Baffert said of the 3-year-old colt.

Tabbed a 'TDN Rising Star' following a debut win at Del Mar last November, Life is Good is now two-for-two after opening his sophomore campaign with a win in the Jan. 2 GIII Sham S.

Also working Monday from the Baffert barn, Freedom Fighter (Violence) went four furlongs in :48.60 (11/66). The 3-year-old colt, a first-out victor at Del Mar last August, returned to finish second in the Feb. 6 GII San Vicente S. He is expected to make his next start in the Mar. 6 GIII Gotham S. at Aqueduct.

Both the San Felipe and the Gotham offer 50 Kentucky Derby qualifying points to the winner, and 20, 10, five to the horses finishing second through fourth.

The Baffert-trained Gamine (Into Mischief), recently crowned Eclipse champion female sprinter, also worked Monday at Santa Anita, covering four furlongs in an easy :50.20 (48/66). The 4-year-old was most recently seen winning the GI Breeders' Cup F/M Sprint.

In other news from Santa Anita, the Arcadia track announced Monday that it has increased the purse of the China Doll S. to be run Mar. 6 from $75,000 to $100,000. Santa Anita will also raise purses on all overnight races on that day's Big 'Cap card by $15,000 per race.

Speightstown Filly Romps to ‘Rising Star’ Honors in Fair Grounds Opener

Carribean Caper (f, 3, Speightstown–Checkupfromzneckup, by Dixie Union) kicked off Saturday's loaded GII Risen Star S. card with a 'TDN Rising Star' performance in the lid lifter at Fair Grounds.

The 3-1 chance broke sharply and forced the issue on the outside from second through an opening quarter in :22.24 over the “good” going. Always traveling like the winner, she poked her head in front approaching the quarter pole, and with a shake or two of the reins from Colby Hernandez, took off in a flash to win going away by a geared-down eight lengths over Famous Attraction (Into Mischief).

The four-time winner and stakes-placed Checkupfromzneckup was purchased by breeder WinStar Farm for $825,000 carrying Carribean Caper in utero at the 2017 KEENOV Sale. Her Into Mischief 2-year-old filly brought $600,000 from Stonestreet Stables as a Keeneland September yearling. She had a filly by Tapit in 2020 and was bred back to Quality Road.

Second dam Unbridled Lassie has a well-beaten third-place finish in the GI Coaching Club American Oaks on her resume.

This is the extended female family of Broodmare of the Year Weekend Surprise, dam of the legendary A.P. Indy and Classic winner Summer Squall. MG1SW and two-time highweight Wolfhound is also on Carribean Caper's page.
