First Foal Arrives for Tight Ten

Mountain Springs Farm in Palmyra, PA has announced the arrival of the first foal by Tight Ten (Tapit–Devils Humor, by Distorted Humor), who stood his first season there in 2021. He is the three-quarter brother to Winstar Farm's Constitution (Tapit). The bay filly is also the first foal of a multiple-winning half-sister to GISW Colonial Colony (Pleasant Colony).

“She looks just like her sire,” said Mountain Springs owner Rich Miller. “And we have lots more by Tight Ten due in the next few weeks.”

The stallion stands at the 200-acre Mountain Springs Farm, just five miles south of Penn National Racetrack at a fee of $2,500 live foal. Multiple mare discounts are available and PA-Bred foals sired by the Pennsylvania-based stallion are eligible for the new $600,000 Stallion Stakes Series.

Injury Claims Young Sire Speightster At Age 10

Speightster, a Grade 3 winner and young sire who recently relocated to Canada, was euthanized on Feb. 6 after suffering an irreparable hind leg injury in his stall, Canadian Thoroughbred reports.

The 10-year-old son of Speightstown had relocated to Northern Dawn Stables in Hillsburgh, Ontario last month after being purchased by Ontario-based breeders Jay and Christine Hayden. Speightster stood his first four years at stud at WinStar Farm in Kentucky before moving north of the border.

From three crops of racing age, Speightster has sired 88 winners, and his combined progeny earnings exceed $5.4 million.

Speighter had already made an impression in Canada with Woodbine stakes winners Aubrieta and Dreaming of Drew. His other runners of note include stakes winners Door Buster, Tantrum, and That Kenney Kid, as well as Grade 3-placed Tough to Tame.

A homebred for WinStar Farm, Speightster won three of four career starts and earned $368,800, highlighted by a win in the Grade 3 Dwyer Stakes.

New Ontario Stallion Speightster Euthanized

Speightster (Speightstown–Dance Swifty, by Danzig), who arrived late last month at Northern Dawn Farm in Hillsburgh, Ontario, to stand the 2022 breeding season, was euthanized Feb. 6 after suffering a severe injury to a hind leg while in his stall. Canadian Thoroughbred was first to break the news.

A 'TDN Rising Star', Speightster won his first three career races, including a defeat of GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile hero Texas Red (Afleet Alex) in the GIII Dwyer S. and entered stud in 2017 at his owner's WinStar Farm. From two crops of racing age, Speightster is the sire of 90 winners–including 70 from his initial crop to the races–and five black-type winners. Among them were Dreaming of Drew and Aubrieta, both of which won stakes races at Woodbine.

Canadian Thoroughbred reported that Speightster, who was purchased to stand in the province by Jay and Christine Hayden, has been the subject of great interest from local breeders since his acquisition was announced last month.

Speightster's female family includes Sam-Son Fam luminaries Smart Strike and Dance Smartly, among others.

Emmanuel Impresses in Tampa Two-Turn Test

6th-Tampa Bay Downs, $31,000, Alw (NW1X)/Opt. Clm ($75,000), 1-30, 3yo, 1m 40y, 1:40.24, ft, 4 1/2 lengths.
EMMANUEL (c, 3, More Than Ready–Hard Cloth, by Hard Spun) backed up the 'TDN Rising Star' moniker and his place at number five on T.D. Thornton's GI Kentucky Derby Top 12 Sunday as he handled a salty Tampa allowance field with aplomb. A 6 3/4-length debut scorer going a one-turn mile at Gulfstream Dec. 11, he was forced to scratch from a spot similar to this one Jan. 7 when he spiked a fever, but he was backed like a sure thing here at 1-5 for the red-hot Todd Pletcher barn. With locally based Pablo Morales in the irons, the bay wasted little time taking command but was kept off the fence through soft splits of :25.03 and :49.88. Fellow last-out Gulfstream graduate Glider (Quality Road) moved inside of the leader in upper stretch and looked like he might go right on by, but Morales was playing possum. He hadn't moved a muscle yet on Emmanuel to the eighth pole, but as soon as he hit the gas the chalk burst away and ran up the score with impressive ease to march home 4 1/2 lengths to the good. Glider was a clear-cut second ahead of Emmanuel's stablemate In the Union (Union Rags).

“Just a class horse. I felt like I had so many gears underneath me,” Morales said. “Every time I would just move a hair, he would take off a little bit more and just do it easily. He felt [Glider] coming on the inside down the lane, so I decided to give him a little bit of a hand ride and I could feel him extending more and more.

“He just did it easy–it felt like a workout for him. He acts like an old horse who has run 100 times and he gives you what you ask out of him. I'm thankful I was considered to ride him. It was a pleasure.”

Pletcher and WinStar Farm were of course represented on Saturday by fellow 'Rising Star' and impressive $3-million GI Pegasus World Cup Invitational S. winner Life Is Good (Into Mischief), while Siena Farm is co-owner of $750,000 GIII Southwest S. hero and fellow undefeated 3-year-old colt Newgrange (Violence). Produced by a half-sister to globetrotting MG1SW Hawkbill (Kitten's Joy) and GISW Free Drop Billy (Union Rags), Emmanuel has a 2-year-old Kitten's Joy half-brother who cost $120,000 at Keeneland September and a yearling full-sister.
