Candy Ride’s Candied Stays Perfect in Darley Alcibiades

Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners' Candied (f, 2, Candy Ride {Arg}–Toni Tools, by Roaring Fever), a 3/4-length, come-from-behind debut winner sprinting at Saratoga Aug. 20, stayed perfect while stretching to two turns in Friday's 'Win and You're In' GI Darley Alcibiades at Keeneland.

The 4-1 chance raced in between horses rounding the clubhouse turn in fifth. She advanced into fourth approaching the quarter pole, made a flashy, sweeping move at the top of the stretch, and, despite hanging on her left lead down the stretch, went on to defeat favored runaway GIII Pocahontas S. heroine and 'TDN Rising Star' V V's Dream (Mitole) by a length. Alys Beach (Omaha Beach) was third.

Previously unbeaten GI Spinaway S. heroine Brightwork (Outwork), off as the 9-5 second choice, tired to finish a well-beaten fifth after pressing the pace while making her two-turn debut here.

“That was my biggest concern,” winning trainer Todd Pletcher said of Candied diving into the deep end at just second asking here. “I thought the filly had the talent to do it. I was just concerned about the seasoning. Several of the fillies in here that we had to beat today had good, solid campaigns and she was just making her second start.”

Pletcher continued, “But I'll tell you, she trained impressively before her debut and she then just kept getting better afterwards. She was finishing her works and galloping out like she wanted more ground. Luis (Saez) has been pretty high on her since he first worked her at Saratoga, so we're happy to see her meet expectations.”

Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners and Pletcher will also be well-represented by 'TDN Rising Star' Locked (Gun Runner) in Saturday's GI Claiborne Breeders' Futurity S. at Keeneland.

Pedigree Notes:

Candied becomes the 115th stakes winner/56th graded stakes/19th Grade I winner worldwide for Candy Ride. The stakes-winning New York-bred Toni Tools, a $15,000 purchase by McMahon & Hill Bloodstock at the 2022 KEEJAN sale, produced a colt by Solomini this year and was bred back to Mind Control.

‘TDN Rising Star’ Agate Road Earns BC Berth In Pilgrim

Repole Stable and St. Elias Stable's AGATE ROAD (c, 2, Quality Road–Yellow Agate, by Gemologist) saved his best for last, as he found his best stride inside the final furlong and edged away to take Wednesday's GII Pilgrim S., earning an all-expenses-paid trip to Santa Anita for the Nov. 3 GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf in the process. Favored at 2-1 off a Saratoga 'TDN Rising Star'-worthy maiden victory that really had to be seen to be believed, the $650,000 Keeneland September yearling purchase was content to sit one from the tail as the outposted Spirit Prince (Cairo Prince)–a latest third in the GIII With Anticipation S. Aug. 31–crossed and cleared all the inside traffic to lead through an opening quarter in :23.51. Quietly ridden down the back by Irad Ortiz, Jr., Agate Road was asked for some acceleration as the field hit the turn, but was consigned to an overland run and lost some ground. Spun wide into the stretch, Agate Road began to zero in on the front-runners with less than a furlong to travel and did his best work through the wire. The final time for the 8 1/2 furlongs was 1:42.83. Fulmineo (Bolt d'Oro) knifed through late for second ahead of the dead-heating Liam's Journey (Liam's Map) and Spirit Prince. Sales history: $650,000 Ylg '22 KEESEP. O-Repole Stable & St Elias Stable; B-CHC Inc (KY); T-Todd Pletcher.

Justify’s Hard to Justify Punches Breeders’ Cup Ticket in Miss Grillo

Hard to Justify (f, 2, Justify–Instant Reflex, by Quality Road) punched her ticket to the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf with a 7-1 upset in Wednesday's rescheduled 'Win and You're In' GII Miss Grillo S. at the Big A.

She sat a stalking trip in second and turned up the heat on the far turn. The bay stuck her head in front in the stretch and dug down deep to get the money by 3/4 of a length. Life's an Audible (Audible) was second; Whimsically (Uncle Mo) was third.

Hard to Justify, a narrow debut winner after overcoming a troubled trip in her unveiling over the Saratoga lawn July 23, becomes the 13th graded winner for Justify and ninth Miss Grillo winner for trainer Chad Brown.

Joe Hirsch Turf Classic Moved to Next Saturday

Following New York State Gaming Commission (NYSGC) approval, the New York Racing Association, Inc. (NYRA) has moved the GI Joe Hirsch Turf Classic from Sunday to next Saturday, Oct. 7, at Aqueduct Racetrack.

Friday's 11-race Aqueduct card was cancelled due to a powerful coastal storm causing widespread flooding and hazardous conditions throughout New York City and Long Island. In addition to Friday's cancellation, NYRA moved Saturday's 11-race card to Sunday and pushed Sunday's 10-race program to Wednesday.

The Joe Hirsch Turf Classic will be re-drawn with entries to be taken on Wednesday, joining a stacked stakes card led by two Grade I “Win and You're In” qualifiers at one-mile for juveniles in the Champagne [GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile] and Frizette [GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies].
