Vaubon Assigned 55kg For Melbourne Cup

The weights for the 133 horses still in the running for the Nov. 7 G1 Lexus Melbourne Cup were released on Tuesday and early 4-1 favourite Vauban (Fr) (Galiway {GB}) was assigned 55kg, 3.5kg below highweight and 2022 Melbourne Cup winner Gold Trip (Fr) (Outstrip {GB}).

The Willie Mullins-trained 5-year-old former hurdler, who won the G3 Ballyroan S. at Naas last month after taking the Listed Copper Horse H. at Royal Ascot in his first flat attempt in June, sits sixteenth on the weights list. Vauban's stablemate and Ballyroan runner-up Absurde (Fr) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}) was handed a 53kg impost after capturing the Ebor H. at York on Aug. 26.

Gold Trip, who could become just the sixth horse to win consecutive Melbourne Cups, also seeks to become the first horse to successfully tote the top weight of 58.5kg since Think Big in 1975

“The announcement of the weights for the 2023 Lexus Melbourne Cup is always a pivotal date for connections who are plotting a path towards the first Tuesday in November which is only 49 days away,” VRC Executive General Manager of Racing Leigh Jordon said. “Gold Trip was impressive in winning the Lexus Melbourne Cup last year carrying 57.5kg and he will be required to be at his best again to go back-to-back carrying 58.5kg.

“Win and you're in races become important targets for horses hoping to secure their spot, the next chance for horses to gain ballot exemption is through the Group 3 Lexus Bart Cummings on TAB Turnbull Stakes Day at Flemington [Oct. 7].”

Their Majesties King Charles III and Queen Camilla's Desert Hero (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}), who is trained by William Haggas, will carry 51.5kg and is 20th in the order of entry for this year's Cup.

Just Fine (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}), who was formerly owned by King Charles III and is now in the care of Melbourne Cup-winning trainer Gai Waterhouse AO, was assigned 52.5kg after his two-length win in the Kingstown Town S. in his Australian debut last week and will need to pass the ballot to gain a start.

Trainers Ciaron Maher and David Eustace hold sixteen other nominations in this year's race, including last year's third-place runner High Emocean (NZ) (Ocean Park {NZ}), who was assigned 50kg. Melbourne Cup-winning trainer Chris Waller holds 14 nominations in this year's Cup headlined by Soulcombe (GB) (Frankel {GB}) (53.5kg) and Francesco Guardi (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) (54kg).

King Rasco Grey Lives Up To His Name With 250k Sale To Mullins At Goffs

It was the French sires who dominated on day two of the Goffs Arkle Sale with Willie Mullins and Harold Kirk going to €250,000 to secure a Galiway (GB) gelding [King Rasko Grey (Fr)] from Treannahow Stables.

That was followed by a Doctor Dino (Fr) gelding that was snapped up by Gordon Elliott for €185,000 from Altenbach Bloodstock and a Jeu St Eloi (Fr) gelding to Paul Nicholls and Tom Malone for €175,000.

Galiway, the sire of dual Group 1 winner Sealiway (Fr), has made huge strides as a National Hunt sire with Mullins training two of his best jumpers, Vauban (Fr) and Gala Marceau (Fr).

The dominant force of National Hunt racing returned to the market to secure the strapping King Rasko Grey from Tony Costello, who Mullins bought Goffs Defender Bumper winner Predators Gold off.

Mullins said, “He's a gorgeous horse by a sire who has been very good to us. He was poetry in motion walking around the ring and I loved him. We've gone back to the source of success in Treannahow Stables.”

Mullins saw off the attention of Nicholls for the Wednesday top lot who was christened by the Costellos as Elvis for a very simple reason.

“Very simply he was the king,” Tony Costello told Bernard Condren, head of sales at Goffs. “I bought him as a foal in Osarus [for €18,000] in the height of Covid. There were only a hundred people at Dublin Airport when we got there. His racing name is King Rasko Grey so Elvis was an easy decision. He's the king today.”

Of the 217 lots offered on Wednesday, 185 were sold for an aggregate of €9,514,000, representing an average of €51,427. The median stood at €45,000.

Goffs chief executive Henry Beeby said, “The Arkle Sale may have a new name this year but there was nothing new about the hunger for top class NH prospects at Goffs in June. For the last number of years this sale has enjoyed a meteoric rise as so many NH vendors have sent a larger and larger share of their best to us and we cannot thank them enough for we are nothing without their horses.

“Over the last two days trade has matched the outdoor temperatures as both were hot, hot, hot! That trade was generated by a simply stunning group of Three-Year-Olds and it was so gratifying to hear judge after judge commend the standard of entry over the two days. Last year the sale grew by 25% so we are delighted to have consolidated those results and it is especially pleasing to see an average and median so close as that points to a sale of true consistency with the latter important figure growing by another 7%.”

He added, “The top of the market enjoyed some titanic bidding duels, none more so than for the top lot with Harold Kirk for Willie Mullins just outlasting Tom Malone for Paul Nicholls. To have the two Champions battling it out is testament to the horse in question and the sale in general, and they were just two of the many significant personalities to play an active part from start to finish.

“So the two days have clearly illustrated the appeal of NH sales at Goffs and we have been so pleased to welcome shoals of buyers from the UK, France and USA following a very proactive campaign by the Goffs Purchaser Attraction Team working in tandem with our friends at Irish Thoroughbred Marketing. They have locked horns with every Irish buyer of note including the mighty band of Point-To-Point handlers who have made such an impact in recent times.

“As we turn our focus to Part 2 of the sale tomorrow, which is bound to produce another significant group of winners, we extend our thanks to every vendor for the trust they placed in the Goffs service and wish each purchaser the best of luck, safe in the knowledge that they have bought from a sale that is truly the measure of any.”

‘It’s A Huge Team Effort’ — As Mullins Wraps Up Another Irish NH Championship

Six Irish National Hunt champions, including Willie Mullins, will be presented with their end-of-season awards at Punchestown on Saturday. Charlie McConalogue, Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, will be on hand at the course to distribute the honours.

Trainer Willie Mullins was named the Irish NH Champion Trainer for the 17th time. He saddled his 4,000th career winner in January and sets a new record for the number of winners in a NH season having surpassed his previous best of 212, set in the 2017/2018 season. The trainer of Irish Grand National hero I Am Maximus (Fr) (Authorized {Ire}), Mullins's other significant wins in Ireland were with multiple Grade 1 winners State Man (Fr) (Doctor Dino {Fr}), Galopin Des Champs (Fr) (Timos {Ger}), El Fabiolo (Fr) (Spanish Moon) and Facile Vega (Ire) (Walk In The Park {Ire}).

Mullins said, “To win the champion trainer title is the icing on another great season for our team. Winning titles like this wouldn't be possible without our loyal owners who send us these wonderful horses. It's a huge team effort at Closutton–our staff go above and beyond in all weathers and keep the show on the road so winning the champion trainer title is a tribute to everyone at home.”

The rest of the winners are:

  • Champion Owner: JP McManus
  • Champion Jockey: Paul Townend
  • Champion Conditional: Michael O'Sullivan
  • Champion Amateur: Patrick Mullins
  • Champion Lady Amateur Rider: Jody Townend.

Named Champion Owner for the 20th time, McManus is also winning his third consecutive owners' title. Winner of the Horse Racing Ireland Contribution to the Industry Award in December, his colours were carried by I Am Maximus, with five-time Champion Jockey Paul Townend aboard, to win the BoyleSports Irish Grand National at Fairyhouse. McManus enjoyed further Grade 1 success with Saint Roi (Fr) (Coastal Path {GB}) and with Gentleman De Mee (Fr) (Saint Des Saints {Fr}).

McManus said, “It's always an honour to win the champion owner title. Thanks goes to all the trainers, jockeys and fantastic horses who gave my family and I some great days this season.”

Horse Racing Ireland Chief Executive, Suzanne Eade, said, “My heartiest congratulations go to our champions JP, Willie, Paul, Michael, Patrick and Jody, all wonderful ambassadors for National Hunt racing and for Irish sport. A special mention must go to our three Cork heroes, Paul who gained his first success in the BoyleSports Irish Grand National, Michael who has enjoyed a sensational breakthrough season and to Jody who rode out her claim, a notable achievement for any rider.

“The season has been a great success with big numbers in attendance at our flagship meetings from start to finish. Thanks to a very special and dedicated workforce, the vast majority working behind the scenes in racing yards and stables in every county in the country, the Irish racing and breeding industries continue to go from strength to strength.”
