Pride of Dubai’s Dubai Honour Takes The Guillaume d’Ornano

There was a surprise in store at Deauville on Saturday, with the feature G2 Prix Guillaume d'Ornano Haras du Logis Saint-Germain going to one of the lesser-fancied of the British raiders in Dubai Honour (Ire) (Pride of Dubai {Aus}) from the red-hot William Haggas stable. Last seen beating the subsequent G3 Rose of Lancaster S. winner Foxes Tales (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}) by a head in receipt of nine pounds in a heritage handicap over this 10-furlong trip at Newmarket July 9, the gelding who sports the Mohamed Obaida silks raced in rear early as Maxime Guyon waited off the strong pace. Coming alive in the straight, the 11-1 shot was able to reel in the leaders with relative ease passing the furlong pole and draw away for a comfortable 1 3/4-length defeat of Pretty Tiger (Ire) (Sea the Moon {Ger}). In doing so, he completed a group-race treble for his yard after the wins of Cloudy Dawn (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}) in this track's G3 Prix de Lieurey and Sacred (GB) (Exceed and Excel {Aus}) in the G2 Hungerford S. “The trainer showed some confidence, but he did say that I'd do well not being too far from the pace,” Guyon commented. “That was not easy from his eight draw and with the pace strong I had to travel at the back. When I moved between horses, he really changed gears and that was something that the trainer wasn't certain he could do. I tell you, this horse knows how to quicken!”

Dubai Honour, who was off the mark at the third attempt trying a mile for the first time at Haydock in September, had been gelded after a subsequent fourth in a nursery at that trip at York the following month. Making his reappearance in Royal Ascot's always-competitive Britannia H. staying at a mile June 17, he performed with credit in that tough re-entry to lead home all on the far side only to finish fourth overall before moving up to this trip to outstay the classy Foxes Tales in a strong handicap at the July meeting. Despite TDN Rising Star Derab (GB) (Sea the Stars {Ire}) and the G1 Prix de Diane runner-up Philomene (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) failing to meet expactations here, the form has a solid look and there was no hint of fluke in the winner's dominant performance.

Dubai Honour is the first foal out of the unraced Mondelice (GB) (Montjeu {Ire}) who is a half-sister to the G3 Prix Daphnis winner Last Kingdom (Frankel {GB}) and the GIII Sweetest Chant S. third Ivyetsu (Tapit). She is a granddaughter of the G1 Phoenix S. heroine Damson (Ire) (Entrepreneur {GB}), who is also the dam of the G2 Flying Childers S. and G3 Molecomb S.-winning sire Requinto (Ire) (Dansili {GB}) and the second dam of the G3 Eulogy S. winner Lilikoi (NZ) (Charm Spirit {Ire}). BBA Ireland had the foresight to invest 160,000gns in her 2-year-old daughter of Wootton Bassett (GB) at the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale Book 2, while her yearling colt is by Cracksman (GB) and she has a colt foal by Invincible Spirit (Ire).

Exceed and Excel’s Sacred Too Strong In The Hungerford

Saturday belonged to William Haggas, with two of the Newmarket handler's pattern-race successes coming at the same time during an action-packed period mid-afternoon. While Dubai Honour (Ire) (Pride of Dubai {Aus}) was causing an upset at Deauville in the G2 Prix Guillaume d'Ornano, the yard's Sacred (GB) (Exceed and Excel {Aus}) was tearing it up in Newbury's G2 BetVictor Hungerford S. Back from a weather-enforced break having failed to see out the mile of the G1 1000 Guineas when seventh at Newmarket May 2, Cheveley Park Stud's impressive G3 Nell Gwyn S. winner was anchored in rear early by a confident Tom Marquand. Slicing between rivals passing two out, the 6-1 shot surged to the fore with 150 yards remaining and comfortably held the seasonal debutante Laneqash (GB) (Cable Bay {Ire}) by a length as the 3-year-olds dominated. “They said she was top-class. To jump into the race like that was very impressive,” her rider said.

Kept to five and six furlongs as a juvenile, Sacred was runner-up in the G2 Queen Mary S. at Royal Ascot, G2 Lowther S. at York and G2 Flying Childers S. at Doncaster before finishing last of eight in Newmarket's G1 Cheveley Park S. in late September. Back with a bang trying this trip for the first time in the Apr. 14 Nell Gwyn, the homebred had been prepared for the G1 Commonwealth Cup and G3 Oak Tree S. after the Guineas but had missed out due to the summer storms. This was confirmation of her earlier promise and she remains unbeaten at this trip.”When Ryan [Moore] won the Nell Gwyn on her, he said it was like riding a motorbike,” Maureen Haggas said. “We've timed her with the latest equipment at home and some of her figures are unbelievable. She grew two inches through the winter and I hope that after her light season the owners might keep her in training at four. She's in the [G2] City of York [on Saturday], but that is very quick and could undo all the good that's happened for her break. Then there's the [Oct. 3 G1 Prix de la] Foret [at ParisLongchamp], but she would only go if it stayed dry.”

Sacred is the first foal out of Sacre Caroline (Blame), a half-sister to the five-times grade I-winning champion turf female Lady Eli (Divine Park) who cost the operation 300,000gns at the 2017 Tattersalls December Mares Sale. Also a half to the GIII Regret S. and GIII Mint Julep H. winner Bizzy Caroline (Afleet Alex), the dam is connected to the high-class Sweet Loretta (Tapit), Spiced Perfection (Smiling Tiger), Spring in the Air (Spring at Last), Palace Episode (Machiavellian), Laughing Lashes (Mr. Greeley), Pays to Dream (High Yield) and The Last Zip (City Zip). Her unraced 2-year-old filly is Enshrine (GB) (Ulysses {Ire}), while she also has a 2020 colt by that sire who is due to sell at the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale Book 1.

Moulin Likely Target For Baaeed

Shadwell's highly progressive 3-year-old Baaeed (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) is likely to be seen next in the G1 Prix du Moulin at ParisLongchamp on Sept. 5, trainer William Haggas told Nick Luck's Daily Podcast. Baaeed is unbeaten in four tries, having built on victories at the maiden and novice level with a four-length triumph in the Listed Sir Henry Cecil S. at Newmarket on July 8, and with a 6 1/2-length score in the G3 Thoroughbred S. at Glorious Goodwood three weeks later.

“We were very pleased with him [at Goodwood] and he proved he's worth a shot at a better race, I think,” said Haggas. “There's the [G1] Jacques le Marois [on Aug. 15], which I think is too quick, so it's the Moulin on Sept. 5 or the back-up is the [G2] Celebration Mile [at Goodwood on Aug. 28], but I really want to go for a Group 1 race with him now.

“We have to go to France, and that's complicated in its own way. If all goes well in Paris, then it's the [G1] QEII or nothing–if it's bottomless at Ascot he probably won't go.”

Haggas also provided an update on this season's G3 John Porter S. and G3 Aston Park S. victor Al Aasy (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}), who was recently gelded after finishing second in the G1 Coronation Cup and G2 Princess of Wales's S.

“He's been at Shadwell, recovering from his castration, and he's been swimming,” Haggas said. “I feel if he can learn to swim, which apparently he's very proficient at, then if he does go to Dubai next March they have a 100-metre swimming pool in the quarantine centre he can use. He would be able to swim there rather than go on the track, which is quite firm.

Haggas said the 4-year-old could have targets even further afield.

“Things have got to be discussed, [but] he might go with Addeybb to Sydney to run in the Tancred S. [in April]. He could be quite useful in that sort of race.”

Addeybb On Course To Defend His Title In QIPCO Champion Stakes

Last year's emphatic QIPCO Champion Stakes winner Addeybb is firmly on course to defend his title in the £1.2 million (about US$1.42 million) contest, according to his trainer William Haggas.

Addeybb finished second in the race in 2019 before going one better last year, providing jockey Tom Marquand with the biggest victory of his career so far. Having since won a third Australian Group 1, taking his career earnings to more than £3.5m (over US$4m), he has now given Marquand four of his six Group 1 wins.

Since returning from Australia his campaign has been geared towards QIPCO British Champions Day, and Haggas, who has also entered rising star Baaeed, as well as Al Aasy, Alenquer and Mohaafeth, is understandably looking forward to it.

He said: “It was great to win the Champion Stakes last year, fantastic. Addeybb was really on his game that day too. If we can get him like that again that would be great.

“Right now he is in a field, but he will have a run before the Champion Stakes. He was a little bit rusty in the Eclipse and the ground wasn't really slow enough for him, but I thought he ran well and he kept going up the hill as usual. I am sure we will meet St Mark's Basilica again at Ascot. It's called the Champion Stakes for a reason. It's where the good ones go.”

Love has already made two visits to Ascot this year and could make a third to run in the QIPCO Champion Stakes. Last year's QIPCO 1000 Guineas and Investec Oaks winner landed the Prince of Wales's Stakes first time out this season, but suffered her first defeat for two years when third behind Derby winner Adayar in the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth QIPCO Stakes, for which she started favourite.

Trainer Aidan O'Brien said: “The King George was a little bit of a funny race. Our other horse Broome got left five lengths and he still ended up being able to make the running easily. Ryan (Moore) had to wait to make his run a lot later than he would have preferred and in the end she probably had no race at all.

“Where she goes next I am not sure but we will give her a little bit of time before we decide that. She seems to be in good form.”

Love is one of a host of O'Brien entries for this race, which also include the Coral-Eclipse Stakes winner St Mark's Basilica, the winner of two French Classics this year, plus the outstanding dual Oaks winner Snowfall and the likes of Bolshoi Ballet and Santa Barbara.

“St Mark's Basilica is in at York and Leopardstown and is entered on Champions Day as well,” O'Brien added. “We will get a little bit down the road before we really commit. Snowfall has the two entries (QIPCO Champion Stakes and QIPCO British Champions Fillies & Mares). We are looking at the Yorkshire Oaks at the moment for her.

“Bolshoi Ballet (entered for QIPCO Champion Stakes) is in America at the moment and he is going to run in Saratoga at the weekend in a Group 1 there. Santa Barbara (entered for QIPCO Champion Stakes and Queen Elizabeth II Stakes) is going back to America the following weekend for the mile and a quarter fillies' race. They will come back to Europe after that. Neither of them are soft ground horses.”

Last year's runner-up Skalleti is due to renew rivalry with Addeybb, his trainer Jerome Reynier having had a return to Ascot firmly in his sights all year.

Reynier said: “As a gelding the most prestigious race he could win is definitely the Champion Stakes, so we've been planning his season to bank on it. He is unbeaten in four starts this year and he now has three Group 1 wins under his belt.

“He will probably have one or two races before it and we really hope he will be able to have his ground on the day. He will probably go back to the Prix Dollar for a third time if he is in good form and the ground is soft enough, but we are aiming much for the Champion Stakes. If the ground is not soft enough for Arc weekend, he will be skipping the Prix Dollar.

“He had never run in a Group 1 prior to the Champion Stakes last year. The opposition was very high with Mishriff, Magical and Addeybb, but we were quite confident he'd run well. We really wanted to see how competitive he was going to be against those horses, and now we know we have one of the best horses in Europe on turf at a mile and a quarter.”

John Gosden, who enjoyed wide-margin wins here with Cracksman in 2017 and 2018, has two obvious candidates in Mishriff and Lord North. He has also entered Palace Pier here, as well as in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes (sponsored by QIPCO).

He said: “Mishriff goes to York first for the Juddmonte and will then probably run in the Champion Stakes. Lord North is a possibility too. He had a throat infection and couldn't run in the Eclipse, so he hasn't run since Meydan in March, so he'll be coming fresh for the autumn.”

The race is also a possibility for last week's Qatar Nassau Stakes winner Lady Bowthorpe. Trainer William Jarvis said: “She's had a long season, but she's very tough and has an amazing constitution, so if she's still enjoying her work we'll definitely consider the Champion Stakes. In the meantime though we'll keep her against her own sex for as long as we can, and there's the Prix Jean Romanet and the Prix de l'Opera to look at before Ascot.”

No fewer than 26 individual Group 1 winning horses are entered for the QIPCO Champion Stakes who, between them, have accumulated 52 wins at the highest level.
