Dual-Hemisphere Group 1 Winner Addeybb Will Miss Trip To Australia After Setback

Multiple Group 1 winner Addeybb will miss a scheduled trip to Australia due to treatment for an infected blood clot in his hock, according to the Thoroughbred Daily News. Trainer William Haggas said plans for the 7-year-old son of Pivotal call for him to return to training next year, but that he would not be fit enough to ship south of the equator for an attempt at a third straight G1 Queen Elizabeth II Stakes or a second G1 Ranvet Stakes.

In his northern hemisphere exploits, Addeybb has posted a win in the 2020 G1 British Champions Stakes and finished second in the 2019 edition. The gelding also ran second in the 2020 G1 Prince of Wales's at Royal Ascot, and the 2021 G1 Coral-Eclipse. Overall, Addeybb's record stands at 12 wins from 24 starts with earnings of £3,554,184 (about US$4 million).

“His infection markers have improved, we're not out of the woods, but I think we're making good headway,” Haggas told the TDN. “Those sort of things can be nasty. They can be no good and it's good he's better. I very much hope he'll be OK for next season. He owes us absolutely nothing and we won't take any risks with him. From an Australian point of view this is a bad time, but from any other point of view it's a good time to have a bit of a setback.”

Setback Rules Addeybb Out Of Australian Trip

Addeybb (Ire) (Pivotal {GB}) will not travel to Australia for next year's Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival after receiving treatment for a blood clot in a hock.

Sheikh Ahmed Al Maktoum's 7-year-old gelding recently spent two weeks in an equine hospital after the clot became infected. He is now back at trainer William Haggas's Newmarket yard and while expected to race next season, he will not be ready for Sydney in March and April, where his targets would have included an attempt at a third straight G1 Queen Elizabeth II S., and a second G1 Ranvet S.-he was runner-up there last year to G1 Melbourne Cup winner Verry Elleegant (NZ) (Zed {NZ}), who he beat in both his Queen Elizabeth wins. Addeybb is a Group 1 winner domestically, too, having taken the 2020 G1 Champion S.

Haggas said, “He came back home from hospital on Monday. I think and hope he's going to be OK. He's definitely made some improvement but that's going to scupper him [going to Australia]. He won't be able to leave England next February.

Haggas Confirms Baaeed to Return at Four

The brilliant, undefeated miler Baaeed (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) will return for a 4-year-old campaign, trainer William Haggas has confirmed.

“Of course I'm looking forward to next year–as long as he stays right both physically and mentally–and he's been a delight to train so far,” said Haggas of the Shadwell homebred. “He'll be a fun horse to have next year.

“It's terrific to have one of the best 3-year-olds in Europe, probably.”

A winner at Leicester on June 7, Baaeed added a Newmarket novice on June 19 before cruising to a four-length listed win there on July 8. Tried in group company for the first time, he won the G3 Bonhams Thoroughbred S. by 6 1/2 lengths at Goodwood on July 30. Sent to France for the Sept. 5 G1 Prix du Moulin de Longchamp, the colt earned his first Group 1 win, defeating fellow top-level winners Order Of Australia (Ire) (Australia {GB}) and Victor Ludorum (GB) (Shamardal). The G1 Queen Elizabeth II S. at Ascot on QIPCO British Champions Day went the bay's way by a neck over classy miler Palace Pier (GB) (Kingman {GB}).

He added of the full-brother to proven stayer Hukum (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}), “A lot of mine that don't run at two I'm pretty sure are ok. I can't remember why he didn't run, he may have been immature, may have had a few niggles and then it went very soft, so I didn't want to run him.

“I'm also not a huge lover of the all-weather. Obviously we have quite a lot of runners on it, but I don't like running 2-year-olds on it. Sometimes you have to but if I know they are quite good, they don't run.

“I never saw him as a Guineas horse because I saw him as a stayer given how well his brother stays.”

Sealiway, Baaeed Win on Champions Day At Ascot, Earn Guaranteed Spots In BC Turf, Mile

Le Haras De La Gousserie's Sealiway (FR) struck for France to win a thrilling renewal of the Group 1 QIPCO Champion Stakes on QIPCO British Champions Day at Ascot Racecourse in England. With this victory, Sealiway gained an automatic place in the $4 million Longines Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Turf as part of the Breeders' Cup Challenge Series.

The Breeders' Cup Challenge Series is an international series of 86 stakes races whose winners receive automatic starting positions and fees paid into a corresponding race of the Breeders' Cup World Championships, which will be held at Del Mar racetrack in Del Mar, California, on Nov. 5-6.

Sealiway was last seen only 13 days ago when finishing fifth in the Group 1 Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe. Trained by Cedric Rossi, the 3-year-old colt came from off the pace to lead in the straight and dug deep to hold off a late challenge from Dubai Honour (IRE). The eventual winner was three-quarters of a length clear under jockey Mickael Barzalona in a pulsating finish. The Irish-trained Mac Swiney (IRE) kept on for third, with favorite Mishriff (IRE) back in fourth.

Following his success, Barzalona said: “It is great to be part of this big event and I have been lucky with this horse. It is the beginning and he deserved to prove his talent like he did today. The team were very confident – it was tough race, but he did it well.”

Off at 12/1, Sealiway, a chestnut son of Galiway (GB) out of the Kendargent (FR) mare Kensea (FR), finished the 1 ¼ miles in 2:08:31 over a course listed as good to soft, and soft in places.

Baaeed dominates Queen Elizabeth II Stakes

Shadwell Estate Company's Baaeed (GB) retained his unbeaten record by winning the one-mile Group 1 Queen Elizabeth II Stakes (sponsored by QIPCO). The victory secured the son of Frankel (GB) an automatic starting position and fees paid into this year's $2 million Grade 1 FanDuel Breeders' Cup Mile presented by PDJF through the Breeders' Cup Challenge Series.

Baaeed (2/1), trained by William Haggas and ridden by Jim Crowley, traveled strongly throughout the race and showed a sparkling turn of foot in an exciting finish. The 3-year-old held off favorite Palace Pier (GB) by a neck, with Lady Bowthorpe (GB) running another big race in third.

Crowley, speaking after the race, said: “He's just a beast, he just keeps on getting better. The ground is a bit slow for him. I think [if there was] quicker ground, he would have probably picked up a bit better, but he's come a long way in a short space of time. He's a proper champion.”

Baaeed, a bay son of Sea The Stars (IRE) out of the Kingmambo mare Aghareed, finished the 1-mile in 1:42:57.

As part of the benefits of the Challenge Series, Breeders' Cup will pay the entry fees for Sealiway to start in the Longines Breeders' Cup Turf and Baaeed to start in the FanDuel Breeders' Cup Mile, which will both be run on the Del Mar turf course. Breeders' Cup will also provide a travel allowance of $40,000 for all starters based outside of North America to compete in the World Championships. The Challenge winners must be nominated to the Breeders' Cup program by the Championships' pre-entry deadline of Oct. 25 to receive the rewards.
