Mehmas Colt A New TDN Rising Star At Ripon

Ripon's Sunday card threw up a surprise as the George Boughey-trained Asadna (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}–Looks Great {GB}, by New Approach {Ire}) stormed to TDN Rising Star status in the six-furlong novice. Held up initially by William Buick, the 4-1 shot cruised to the front two out and strode further clear with distance to record a staggering 12-length debut success. Fellow newcomer Fifty Grand Slater (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}) was the one closest to Sheikh Abdullah Almalek Alsabah's 160,000gns Tatts Craven Breeze-Up graduate, with Jesmond Dawn (Ire) (Dawn Approach {Ire}) a further four lengths behind. Providing context to the form, the fourth-placed 11-10 favourite Valadero (Ire) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}), who had been second in Doncaster's Brocklesby in March, was beaten a total of 16 1/2 lengths.

Connections are heading to the G2 Coventry S. next month with the outlandish winner, who recorded a time nearly a second faster than the dual listed scorer Shouldvebeenaring (GB) (Havana Grey {GB}) did on ground officially faster in this 12 months ago.

Pedigree Notes

The dam, who also has a yearling filly by Belardo (Ire), was unraced for Godolphin before being sold for 10,000gns at the 2016 Tatts July Sale. She is out of the similarly-unraced Danehill Dreamer (Danehill), a half to the G1 Eclipse S. hero Compton Admiral (GB) (Suave Dancer), the G1 Queen Elizabeth II S. hero Summoner (GB) (Inchinor {GB}) and to the G2 Ribblesdale S. runner-up Twyla Tharp (Ire) (Sadler's Wells). She in turn produced the excellent The Fugue (GB) (Dansili {GB}), heroine of the G1 Prince of Wales's S., G1 Yorkshire Oaks, G1 Nassau S. and G1 Irish Champion S.

Dubawi’s Modern Games Has The Most Bite In The Lockinge

Successful at the elite level at two Breeders' Cups, in a Poule d'Essai des Poulains and a Woodbine Mile, Modern Games (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}–Modern Ideals {GB}, by New Approach {Ire}) finally did it in the UK as he swooped to dominate Saturday's G1 Al Shaqab Lockinge S. at Newbury. Drawn on the extreme towards the stands' rail, the 3-1 favourite was in the right place if the preceding London Gold Cup was anything to go by and William Buick was able to enjoy the perfect draft behind My Prospero (Ire) (Iffraaj {GB}). It was the 22-1 outsider Chindit (Ire) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) who played the penultimate hand inside the final furlong, but Modern Games was quickly on his case which led to one of those bizarre moments that happens rarely.

As the eventual winner passed the Hannon runner, Chindit turned his head to bite him as Godolphin's Noverre (Rahy) had done to Keltos (Fr) (Kendor {Fr}) in this same contest 21 years ago. With only Buick's hand slightly compromised by that act, the chestnut forged ahead to register a 1 1/2-length success, a record-stretching ninth in the race for the royal blue livery. There was a length back to the revived Berkshire Shadow (GB) (Dark Angel {Ire}) in third, with a head separating that 33-1 shot and My Prospero.

“There are no idiosyncracies in this horse,” Buick said before revealing a minor nick to his left hand. “He is straightforward and it turned out exactly as I hoped it would. He's a real top-class miler and you forget that this is his first group 1 in this country. He can make things happen around him rather than relying on other things and the pace was with us. I was quite comfortable throughout and I always had them covered.”

Had it not been for Baaeed (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) in last year's G1 Sussex S. and a resurgent Bayside Boy (Ire) (New Bay {GB}) in the G1 Queen Elizabeth II S, Modern Games would have already had this particular monkey off his back and the fact that he was the premier miler in the line-up hardened by a second in Keeneland's GI Maker's Mark Mile last month only took root late as he was hammered into favouritism. Buick was happy to track in the small group racing towards the stands with Mutasaabeq (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) out on his own in the overall lead in the centre and Chindit also solo in between.

With a possible bias towards racing on the front end during Newbury's two-day meeting, the onus was on Buick to make up ground and it was notable that Modern Games was already at work heading to three out. Many were in contention with two furlongs left, but after last year's Lockinge third Chindit had blown the race apart a furlong later there was only one serious pursuant and as the former leading juvenile was overthrown late he made his displeasure known.

Charlie Appleby is content to tread the obvious path of the Queen Anne and Sussex for the winner, the second in a group 1 this month for the dam after the Saeed bin Suroor-trained 1000 Guineas heroine Mawj (Ire) (Exceed And Excel {Aus}). For the team at Moulton Paddocks, the ultimate aim remains several months off. “What we'd really like to do is go back for a third Breeders' Cup,” he stated. “Not that it is a necessity, but it would be lovely to see if we can do the treble. We will work back from the Breeders' Cup and look at the Sussex, as logically we should do, and the Queen Anne along the route.”

“I'm delighted for all of the team, but also for the horse, because he deserves to win a group one in England and he will go down to date as one of the best sons of Dubawi there has been,” Appleby added. “He has got older and he warms into his races. We saw that unfortunately in the later stages in America. This horse started off his career with the likes of Native Trail and Coroebus, he was going out in the mornings with some star milers then. He was one of the few horses who put Baaeed under the pump. I felt he gained a lot of support and recognition from that day onwards here in England.”

Both second and third are also set for the Queen Anne, with Richard Hannon saying of the runner-up, “He travelled great and was a happy horse. He has improved physically. He has a middle to him now, which he didn't have earlier in his career. There is one of these coming his way.” Andrew Balding added of the 2021 G2 Coventry S. winner Berkshire Shadow, “He's a grand horse. He ran very well in the 2000 Guineas last year and his form tailed off a bit, but he's a different horse this year. I think he will win us a decent race, because he really likes fast ground. Yesterday's rain wasn't that helpful for him.”

My Prospero will also take in Royal Ascot, but as expected it will be the Prince of Wales's for the only one of the first four not to have a prep race this Spring. “He needs further,” trainer William Haggas said. “He was going to get stuffed and then he stayed on again. He is just not quick enough for these, but he should come on for that. He will be a player in the Prince of Wales's Stakes. That will just do him good.”

Pedigree Notes

Modern Ideals, who was a twice-raced maiden in the Sheikh Mohammed maroon silks for the Andre Fabre stable, is fast becoming one of Godolphin's key broodmares. Her third foal was the useful Listed Windsor S. winner Modern News (GB) (Shamardal), but that was only the beginning as she went on to throw this industrious bigwig and then the aforementioned Guineas heroine Mawj. She is a daughter of Gerald Leigh's Epitome (Ire) (Nashwan), who was responsible for Godolphin's G1 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere-winning sire Ultra (Ire) (Manduro {Ger}) as well as the G3 Prix Minerve scorer Synopsis (Ire) (In The Wings {GB}) and the listed-placed Epic Similie (GB) (Lomitas {GB}). She in turn produced the G2 July S. runner-up Figure Of Speech (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) and is the second dam of the Cutler Bay S. scorer Behind Enemy Lines (GB) (Sioux Nation).

The third dam is the Italian champion Proskona (Mr. Prospector), who produced the GII Canadian H. winner Calista (GB) (Caerleon) and is the ancestress of Leigh's G1 Prix Lupin and G1 Criterium International-winning sire Act One (GB) (In The Wings {GB}) among an almost endless list of graded-stakes and group performers. Proskona is kin to Riverman's stellar producer Korveya, dam of Woodman's high-class duo Bosra Sham and Hector Protector and fellow Poulains hero Shanghai (Procida). Modern Ideals' 2-year-old filly is by Mastercraftsman (Ire).

Dark Angel’s Mostabshir A New TDN Rising Star

Shadwell already knew they had a special broodmare in Handassa (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) before Friday, but the dam of Nazeef (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) and Mostahdaf (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) is looking like a genuine goldmine after her 3-year-old colt Mostabshir (GB) (Dark Angel {Ire}) seized his TDN Rising Star badge at York. Pitched tellingly by John and Thady Gosden into the G3 Craven S. off the back of an impressive debut win at Kempton in November, the grey had finished failed to light any fires when fifth in Newmarket's leading Guineas trial.

Duly sent back to novice company for this latest of Darley's boosted series, the homebred had a penalty and that may have been why he was abandoned by Jim Crowley in favour of the William Haggas-trained Kathab (Ire) (Kingman {GB}), runner-up in Newmarket's Wood Ditton that had gained extra gravitas after Thursday's Dante. Soon in front as William Buick revived his old Gosden link, the 3-1 second favourite was gradually worked over to the rail and kicked into the clear two out. At the line, there was a yawning five-length gap to the fellow Gosden runner Ziryab (GB) (Kingman {GB}), who denied Kathab the runner's-up spot by a short head.

“I'm impressed–he has a lovely nature and had pricked ears in front,” Buick said. “I loved the way he quickened and he hit the line strong. He probably needs decent ground–at the Craven meeting it was sticky.”

Given the failure to shape like a pattern-race performer in the Craven, John Gosden had contemplated the handicap route at Royal Ascot but could be in for a change of direction now. “He's like a lot of ours–the grass gallops were closed in Newmarket, so they had to train on the all-weather and then when they went to the races they ran in a bog and didn't like it,” he explained. “This was the first summer ground we've had this year and it's a different result. What was nice was that William said he quickened twice, and when they do that you've got to take note.”

“He was giving six pounds to the opposition, so it was a decent performance but we're in a complete muddle now as we don't know if we'll go to the Britannia or the handicapper will make it impossible–the other option is to go in at the deep end,” Gosden Sr added. “What he's shown today is that on genuine summer ground he's a decent horse.”

Shadwell's racing manager Angus Gold added, “I'm delighted to see him quicken like that, I didn't expect it. He looked a galloper when he won at Kempton and it didn't work out for him in the Craven for whatever reason–course, ground, needed the run, whatever. You'd love to run him in a listed race somewhere and if that went well then go St James's Palace, but there isn't the time to do it. We ran in the Craven to see if he was a Guineas horse, it fell in a hole so we thought we'd come back down to bring him back up. To do that with a penalty in that style–I was surprised to see the speed.”

Pedigree Note

Handassa, who proved a bargain 100,000gns purchase by Shadwell from Red House Stud at the 2009 Book 1 Sale, went on to be successful in the Listed Garnet S. over a mile having been tried in the G1 Irish 1000 Guineas. Nazeef was her third foal and second runner, and while the homebred took a little while to build into a top-level performer, when she did so it came in style as she racked up a trio of big-race successes in the G2 Duke Of Cambridge S., G1 Falmouth S. and G1 Sun Chariot S. Handassa's fifth foal was Mostahdaf, who stayed further and has so far brought up a sequence of wins in the G3 September S., G3 Gordon Richards S. and G3 Darley S. in his native Britain and this year's G3 Altanfeethi Neom Turf Cup.

A half-sister to the GII San Gabriel S. winner and GI Frank E. Kilroe Mile-placed Desert Stone (Ire) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}), Handassa is a granddaughter of Star (GB) (Most Welcome {GB}) who gained the rare distinction of producing a pair of group 1-winning sprinters in Pastoral Pursuits (GB) and Goodricke (GB) from matings with Bahamian Bounty (GB). Handassa's next offering is the 2-year-old colt Mutaawid (GB), a full-brother to Mostahdaf, while she also has a yearling colt by Kingman (GB).

Military Order Seals Lingfield Trials Double For Godolphin

With match fitness an advantage leading into Saturday's Listed Fitzdares Lingfield Derby Trial S., it was Godolphin nominee and G1 Betfred Derby entry Military Order (Ire) (Frankel {GB}–Anna Salai, by Dubawi {Ire}) who stepped forward for a career high in the 12-furlong test.

He set the seal on a Lingfield Trials double for the Godolphin-Appleby-Buick triumvirate with a 1 1/4-length success from impressive Newmarket winner Waipiro (Ire) (Australia {GB}), with The King's Listed Newmarket S. runner-up Circle Of Fire (GB) (Almanzor {Fr}) trailing home 4 1/4 lengths adrift in third.

The even-money favourite slipped from an early third passing the judge first time to race fifth along the backstraight. Seizing an opening and quickening smartly to gain a narrow advantage rounding the home turn, he was tackled by Waipiro at the top of the straight and stayed on powerfully under a late drive to defeat that rival in ultimately snug fashion.

Prior to winning on seasonal return at Newbury last month, Military Order backed up an Oct. 1 debut fourth at HQ with a breakthrough score back there later that month in the second of two juvenile outings.

It was a first success in the contest for Charlie Appleby, who said, “I was delighted with that, he learnt plenty today and it was a great ride by William [Buick]. We were going in there today with confidence based on what he had achieved to date. It was a mile-and-a-half and he saw it out well. He has a pedigree and a profile that is coming along very nicely into, hopefully, a Derby horse. I know he has now gone joint-favourite [in betting lists for the Derby] and deservedly so. We will obviously now be keeping an eye on what happens next week in the [G2] Dante [at York], but I was very pleased with him. I'm just delighted to see Military Order confirm he is the horse we feel he hopefully is going forward.”

Buick added, “He did everything I asked him, he's come through that really well and will have learnt plenty. Today was a different test to Newbury, but when I asked him to quicken into a gap running downhill he didn't hesitate. He was totally relaxed and beautifully balanced.”

Military Order, the fifth of six live foals, is one of two scorers produced by GSW G1 Irish 1000 Guineas runner-up Anna Salai (Dubawi {Ire}), the other being G1 Derby and G1 King George hero Adayar (Ire) (Frankel {GB}). Adayar ran second in the 2021 renewal of this contest on the turf. The April-foaled homebred bay is also half to an unnamed 2-year-old filly by Exceed And Excel (Aus). Anna Salai is kin to three stakes performers and to the dams of G1 Prix Lean-Luc Lagardere-winning sire National Defense (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) and stakes-winning G1 Woolavington 2000 third Dubai Gina (Aus) (Dubai Destination).
