Dubawi’s Fairy Cross Makes All For Prestige Triumph

Goldophin's homebred 2-year-old filly Fairy Cross (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}–Devonshire {Ire}, by Fast Company {Ire}), who ran second in last month's Listed Star S. at Sandown, employed enterprising tactics in Saturday's G3 William Hill Prestige S. at Goodwood and was rewarded with a career high in the seven-furlong fillies' test. The 2-1 favourite was swiftly into stride and held sway from the outset. Shaken up when threatened at the quarter-mile marker, she poached a decisive advantage approaching the final furlong and was ridden out to hold Breege (GB) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}) and Bright Diamond (Ire) (El Kabeir) by a length and 3/4-of-a-length in snug fashion.

“I've just spoken to William [Buick], he said she's got plenty of natural pace and I'm delighted with that performance,” said Charlie Appleby of the G2 Rockfel S. and G1 Fillies' Mile entry. “He sees no reason why she won't be able to step up to the mile later on, but she's very comfortable at seven furlongs for the moment. There's no set plans or future targets, but she's a filly that's progressing nicely.”

Fairy Cross becomes the 155th pattern-race winner for her sire (by Dubai Millennium {GB}) and the first for G2 Ridgewood Pearl S. victrix and G1 Irish 1000 Guineas third Devonshire (Ire) (Fast Company {Ire}). Her second dam Nova Tor (Ire) (Trans Island {GB}) produced Listed Harry Rosebery S. winner Hurryupharriet (Ire) (Camacho {GB}), herself the dam of Listed Betway Kachy S. scorer Exalted Angel (Fr) (Dark Angel {Ire}). Nova Tor's half-sister Titian Saga (Ire) (Titus Livius {Fr}) is the dam of G1 Nunthorpe S. heroine Winter Power (Ire) (Bungle Inthejungle {GB}), Listed Land O'Burns Fillies' S. victrix Hay Chewed (Ire) (Camacho {GB}) and the stakes-placed Flying Sparkle (Ire) (Fast Company {Ire}). Devonshire has a yearling colt by Blue Point (Ire) and a weanling colt by Ghaiyyath (Ire) to come.

Eternal Pearl Caps Another Big Day For Frankel In The Minerve

Entering Sunday's G3 Prix Minerve at Deauville off a success in the Listed Aphrodite S. at Newmarket July 16, Godolphin's Eternal Pearl (GB) (Frankel {GB}) was on top again with the class rise as less a problem as her odds of 9-10 suggested beforehand. Always travelling easily for William Buick under cover, the descendant of the G1 Prix Vermeille heroine Pearly Shells (GB) (Efisio {GB}) moved to the front with a furlong remaining and stayed on powerfully to score by two lengths from Queen Trezy (Fr) (Almanzor {Fr}).

“She's learning all the time and quickened up the straight today, whereas it became a stamina test at Newmarket last time,” trainer Charlie Appleby said. “She will hopefully go that next level and we'll perhaps look at the Vermeille for her–she's a big, scopy filly who needs to strengthen but more importantly she's getting more of a racing brain. She's going the right way and she could be around next year.”

Eternal Pearl, who had also been second to the subsequent G2 Ribblesdale S. runner-up Sea Silk Road (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) in Goodwood's Listed Height Of Fashion S. May 20, is out of the Listed Prix des Lilas winner Pearly Steph (Fr) (Oasis Dream {GB}). She is a daughter of the German group 3 scorer Pearl Banks (GB) (Pivotal {GB}), whose Pearls Galore (Fr) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) has won three pattern races headed by the G2 Ridgewood Pearl S. and was second in the G1 Prix de la Foret and G1 Matron S. Also responsible for another German group 3 winner in Lucky Lycra (Ire) (Olympic Glory {Ire}), she is out of the aforementioned Pearly Shells who also produced the listed-winning Pearls Or Passion (Fr) (Monsun {Ger}), dam of the G3 Prix de Royaumont winner Pelligrina (Ire) (Soldier Hollow {GB}). Pearly Steph's colt foal is by Belardo (Ire).

Dark Angel’s Mysterious Night To The Fore At Deauville

Third in last month's G2 July S. at Newmarket and G2 Vintage S. at Goodwood, Godolphin's homebred 2-year-old Mysterious Night (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}–Mistrusting {Ire}, by Shamardal) bounced back in style to claim an ultimately comfortable victory in Sunday's G3 Circus Maximus Prix Francois Boutin at Deauville. Steadied behind all four rivals through halfway, the 2-5 favourite made eyecatching headway once angle to the outer for a clear passage approaching the quarter-mile marker and kept on well under mild urging once gaining an edge passing the furlong pole to register a career high by a half length from Bolshkinov (Fr) (Camacho {GB}).

“He's a horse we've always liked and we decided to wait with him here rather than going forward like he did at Goodwood last time,” explained trainer Charlie Appleby. “We had it in mind to take him to Canada next, but William said it is not certain that he'd stretch out to a mile just yet, so we will look at various options here in Europe. The [G1 Prix Jean-Luc] Lagardere in October is a possibility.”

Mysterious Night becomes the 51st pattern-race winner for his sire and second for Listed Boadicea Fillies' S. victrix Mistrusting (Ire) (Shamardal), who also produced his GI Just A Game S. and GI Diana S.-winning full-sister Althiqa (GB). Mistrusting is the leading performer out of G2 Cherry Hinton S. victrix Misheer (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}), a granddaughter of Lighthouse (GB) (Warning {GB}) who is a half-sister to G1 Middle Park S.-winning sire First Trump (GB) (Primo Dominie {GB}) from the family of G1 Prix de l'Abbaye hero Mr Brooks (GB) (Blazing Saddles {Aus}). Mistrusting has a yearling filly by Kodiac (GB) and a weanling colt by Dubawi (Ire) to come.

New Bay’s Jumby Takes The Hungerford

Saturday's G2 BetVictor Hungerford S. at Newbury had the feel of a contest primed for an upset and that was duly provided by Jumby (Ire) (New Bay {GB}) who managed to win the seven-furlong feature with a deal of authority. Last seen finishing an inauspicious 14th in Ascot's International H. July 23, Anthony Pye-Jeary and David Ian's 4-year-old cut a different figure on his biggest class jump yet with the on-fire William Buick to guide him to a career-best. Always happy held up off the pace set by Pogo (Ire) (Zebedee {GB}), the Eve Johnson Houghton-trained 9-1 shot was delivered to lead passing the furlong pole and assert for a 1 3/4-length success from Dubai Poet (GB) (Lope De Vega {Ire}).

Almost equally effective at six as this trip, Jumby ended 2021 with wins in a Salisbury conditions event and a Newmarket handicap which marked him as a pattern-race performer in all but title. Proving that with a third on his return in the latter venue's G3 Abernant S. over six Apr. 13, the bay was switched back to handicaps and filled the same placing in the prestigious Wokingham at Royal Ascot June 18 and in the July Festival's Bunbury Cup July 9. Tried in cheekpieces when running below his optimum last time, he was able to produce his best at a distance over which he was relatively unexposed heading to Saturday.

Johnson Houghton said, “I have always believed in this horse and it is great to get it right. William has also always believed in him and he rides Godolphin horses, so if he believes in him then everyone can. He is in the [G2] City of York next Saturday and while he probably won't run, all options are open because he loves firm ground and I don't want to wait until it goes soft. I don't want to miss the ground with him. We'll see how he comes out of it, but he is full of himself. The Foret closes next week, so we will probably go there.”

Jumby, who becomes the seventh group winner for his sire, is out of the G2 Flying Childers S.-placed Sound Of Guns (GB) (Acclamation {GB}) whose dam is the stakes-placed Eastern Lily (Eastern Echo). Further back is the G1 Irish 2000 Guineas and G1 St James's Palace S.-winning sire Shaadi (Danzig) and the G1 Cheveley Park S. scorer Regal Rose (GB) (Danehill). The dam's yearling filly by Waldgeist (GB) is entered in the upcoming Book 2 Sale, while she also has a foal full-sister to Jumby.
