British EBF To Contribute £1.9-Million To Prizemoney

The British EBF has allocated £1.9-million for total prizemoney contribution in 2022, with £1.7-million designated for over 700 flat races across Great Britain. A further £100,000 has been allocated for a new series for EBF-eligible 2-year-olds, with details to be announced in April. National Hunt prizemoney allocation remains unaltered and will support four series' including the EBF National Hunt Novice Hurdle.

In other British EBF news, Ed Harper of Whitsbury Manor Stud joins the board of trustees while Chris Richardson of Cheveley Park Stud retires after two full terms. Shane Horan is expected to succeed Simon Mockridge of Juddmonte Farms after his six years as a trustee, while Sam Bullard will replace Jono Mills as the Darley Stallions representative.

British EBF Chairman Simon Sweeting said, “Chris Richardson, Simon Mockridge and Jono Mills have been dedicated members of the board; on behalf of the British EBF, I thank them for their time, hard work and being wonderful ambassadors for the organisation. They have helped guide our recent decision making, been conscientious and provided practical support and solutions to the British EBF through a challenging couple of years for British racing.

“We are looking forward to welcoming Ed Harper and Shane Horan to the Board of Trustees from Whitsbury Manor Stud and Juddmonte.”

Harper added, “I am delighted to be joining the EBF Board of Trustees. The EBF continues to be a vital source of prizemoney and I hope to continue its good work for the benefit of both racing and breeding in the UK.”

Showcasing Heads Whitsbury Manor Stud Roster

Showcasing (GB), the sire of three Group 1 winners with five sons at stud, will remain at £45,000 at Whitsbury Manor Stud for the 2022 season.

Announcing the fees for his five stallions, stud director Ed Harper said, “Following last year's downward adjustment of our fees due to Covid we have decided to keep our fees similar to last year. We are delighted that so many of our clients have had great success at the sales and feel it's important to maintain value commercial stallion options for breeders.”

He added, “Once again, Showcasing had a great year on the track as Britain's leading sire of 2-year-olds. His results have also translated through to the sales ring as he achieved more six-figure yearlings sales this year at Books 1 and 2 than ever before.”

As Whitsbury Manor's son of Scat Daddy, Sergei Prokofiev, embarks on his second season at stud, his fee has been reduced slightly to £6,000.

“He was the most popular first-season sire in Britain this year covering 154 mares,” said Harper. “I can honestly say no Whitsbury stallion has ever had a stronger start in terms of numbers and quality.”

The Group 1-winning sprinter Havana Grey (GB) will be represented by his first runners in 2022 and his fee has been held at £6,000, while Due Diligence has been cut to £5,000, the fee at which his fellow resident Adaay (Ire) remains for the fourth season in a row.

Lope Y Fernandez Retired To The National Stud

Lope Y Fernandez (Ire) (Lope De Vega {Ire}-Black Dahlia {GB}, by Dansili {GB}), a Group 3-winning 2-year-old who was five times Group 1-placed throughout his career, has been retired from racing and will enter stud at the National Stud in 2022. The Coolmore partners will retain part ownership alongside new owners The National Stud, Whitsbury Manor Stud and Nick Bradley Racing.

Bred by SF Bloodstock, Lope Y Fernandez was bought by MV Magnier for €900,000 at Arqana's August Yearling Sale in 2018. A debut winner at The Curragh in June of his 2-year-old campaign, Lope Y Fernandez finished second and third, respectively, behind Pinatubo (Ire) (Shamardal) in the Listed Chesham S. the G2 Vintage S. before returning to The Curragh to take the G3 Round Tower S. Third in the G1 Irish 2000 Guineas, Lope Y Fernandez would go on to place in the G1 Prix Jean Prat, G1 Prix Maurice de Gheest and GI Breeders' Cup Mile at three. He won the Listed Heritage S. this year at four and picked up another top-level placing when second to Palace Pier (GB) (Kingman {GB}) in the G1 Queen Anne S.

“Lope Y Fernandez was a lovely, easy moving horse with loads of speed,” said trainer Aidan O'Brien. “He was probably very comfortable with anything from six furlongs to one mile. He's a great mover, has a great walk and a lovely mind.”

Out of the listed-placed Black Dahlia, Lope Y Fernandez is a half-brother to the G2 Vintage S. and G2 Kronimus Oettingen Rennen scorer Dark Vision (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}).

Tim Lane, managing director of The National Stud, said, “Lope Y Fernandez is a hugely exciting addition to our stallion roster at The National Stud. He is an exceptionally good-looking individual and has a standout pedigree. I am a big fan of Lope De Vega and we are delighted to be standing his first son in the UK.”

Lope Y Fernandez's fee will be announced at a later date, and a limited number of breeding rights will be available.

Adaay’s Have A Good Day Strikes For Cabourg Triumph

Theresa Marnane's 2-year-old filly Have A Good Day (Ire) (Adaay {Ire}) went postward for Tuesday's G3 Darley Prix de Cabourg at Deauville returning off a fifth to the reopposing Dizzy Bizu (Ire) (Caravaggio) in Chantilly's June 6 Listed Prix La Fleche and exacted revenge on that rival as fillies dominated the six-furlong test. The February-foaled bay had opened up with five-furlong wins at Chantilly and Lyon-Parilly in April before slipping to second when upped to six furlongs for a May 28 conditions heat at Angers in her penultimate start. Have A Good Day was alert from the gates and raced in a handy third through the early fractions. Inching closer once past halfway, the 19-1 chance was rowed along passing the quarter-mile marker and ridden out once making her challenge at the eighth pole to withstand the late surge of Dizzy Bizu by a half length for a first stakes rosette. Coolmore and Westerberg's hitherto undefeated Trident (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) held every chance in the closing stages and was collared for second by a short head on the line.

“This is my first Group 3 win and I am thrilled,” proclaimed trainer Florian Guyader. “She had a problem with her mouth after being struck in her box and was not at her best last time out. We gave her plenty of time and she gave us the right signs recently. We looked at all possible races and decided with her owner to go for this one. Let's see how she comes out of this before commiting to a race. The [Aug. 22 G1 Darley] Prix Morny [over this course and distance] is a possibility.”

Winning rider Christophe Soumillon added, “The trainer seemed very confident beforehand and I had a great trip throughout. We didn't go very fast early, but I had a good position and timed my move on the horse [Trident] of [Mickael] Barzalona on the outside. She seemed to idle a bit in front, but we were clear enough to resist the late finish of the second.”

Have A Good Day, half to a yearling colt by Gustav Klimt (Ire), is the sixth of seven foals and one of two scorers produced by a half-sister to Listed Prix Djebel third Indigo Blue (Fr) (Night Shift) and G3 Concorde S. runner-up Hasanat (GB) (Night Shift), herself the dam of G3 Killavullan S. third Takrice (GB) (Cadeaux Genereux {GB}). Descendants of her third dam Mariakova (The Minstrel), herself full to the GSW dam of sires Zafonic (Gone West) and Zamindar (Gone West), are headed by G1 King's Stand S. hero Prohibit (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}).
