QIPCO 1000 Guineas: Where Did They Come From?

by Heather Anderson & Brian Sheerin

Will His Highness The Aga Khan's explosive G1 Moyglare Stud S. heroine Tahiyra build on her brilliance from last autumn, or will the Coolmore partners' Meditate consolidate her Breeders' Cup victory in Classic fashion? An even score of fillies test their mettle on the Rowley Mile, and with the changeable weather, it is anyone's guess who will emerge triumphant.

CAERNARFON (GB), Cityscape (GB)–Royal Ffanci (GB) (Royal Applause {GB})
Owner: Hunscote Stud, P Humphreys & J Sweeney
Breeder: Hunscote Stud
Trainer: Jack Channon
Pedigree Notes/Form Analysis: Brother to Dan's Dream, who recorded Group 3 success for this stable as a 2-year-old. Lively outsider.

DANCE IN THE GRASS (GB), Cracksman (GB)–Dance The Dream (GB) (Sir Percy {GB})
Owner: Jaber Abdullah
Breeder: Minster Stud And Mrs H Dalgety
Trainer: Charlie Johnston
Sales History: 57,000gns Tattersalls Book 1 yearling
Pedigree Notes/Form Analysis: First foal out of the listed-placed Dance The Dream, who is a full-sister to smart juvenile hurdler Knight Salute (GB). Family goes back to Cheshire Oaks winner Shadow Dancing (GB) (Unfuwain). Failed to build on her initial promise at two when well-beaten in a pair of Group 2 contests but could out-run her odds.

DREAM OF LOVE (IRE), Shamardal–Secret Gesture (Galileo {Ire})
Owner/Breeder: Godolphin
Trainer: Charlie Appleby
Pedigree Notes/Form Analysis: Boasts one of the strongest pedigrees in the race being a daughter of Oaks runner-up and Group 2 winner Secret Gesture. Half-sister to Final Gesture (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}), an impressive winner of a 1m6f listed race on debut for Paddy Twomey, and Silent Wave (GB) (War Front), placed in a listed contest over five furlongs. Beaten by Mawj (Ire) (Exceed And Excel {Aus}) when last seen in Dubai but the choice of William Buick.

EMBRACE (IRE), Lope De Vega (Ire)–Whazzis (GB) (Desert Prince {Ire})
Owner: Ahmad Alkhallafi
Breeder: New England Stud & Mount Coote Stud
Trainer: Owen Burrows
Sales History: 70,000gns Tattersalls October Book 2 yearling
Pedigree Notes/Form Analysis: Related to lots of winners. Dam won a Group 3 in Italy for William Haggas and is a half-sister to Whazzat (GB) (Daylami {Ire}), notably the producer of James Garfield (Ire). Tendency to race keenly but shaped as though improvement likely on seasonal return at Newbury when flashing home for fourth in a Group 3.

FAIRY CROSS (IRE), Dubawi (Ire)–Devonshire (Ire) (Fast Company {Ire})
Owner/Breeder: Godolphin
Trainer: Charlie Appleby
Pedigree Notes/Form Analysis: Third foal out of Group 2 winner Devonshire, whose dam showed plenty of speed albeit in handicaps. Dream Of Love appears the stable's first choice on jockey bookings.

KARSAVINA (GB), Ulysses (Ire)–Osipova (GB) (Makfi {GB})
Owner/Breeder: Cheveley Park Stud
Trainer: Clive Cox
Pedigree Notes/Form Analysis: Half-sister to Positive (GB) (Dutch Art {GB}), a Group 3 winner for this stable. Dam a half-sister to Group 3 winner Zonderland (GB) (Dutch Art {GB}) and out of a sister to the listed-placed Safina (GB) (Pivotal). Over four lengths to make up on Mammas Girl (GB) (Havana Grey {GB}) on their Nell Gwyn clash last month.

LEZOO (GB), Zoustar (Aus)–Roger Sez (Ire) (Red Clubs {Ire})
Owner: Marc Chan & Andrew Rosen
Breeder: Chasemore Farm
Trainer: Ralph Beckett
Sales History: 77,000gns Tattersalls October Book 3 yearling; €110,000 Arqana Breeze-Up 2-year-old
Pedigree Notes/Form Analysis: Half-sister to three winners. Dam was a speedy performer herself and landed a Group 3 over six furlongs. That is the main question mark hanging over Lezoo here–her ability to see out the mile, given her best form was recorded over sprint trips as a 2-year-old.

MAMMAS GIRL (GB), Havana Grey (GB)–Mamma Morton (Ire) (Elnadim)
Owner: Amo Racing Limited
Breeder: Robert Cornelius
Trainer: Richard Hannon
Sales History: £35,000 buy at the Goffs UK Premier Yearling Sale
Pedigree Notes/Form Analysis: Half-sister to black-type performers Master Of War (GB) (Compton Place {GB}) and Life In Colour (GB) (Showcasing {GB}) out of prolific producer Mamma Morton who is out of the G1 French 1000 Guineas third Gharam (Green Dancer). Entered the picture for this race when posting a hugely-impressive performance to win the Nell Gwyn. Leading player.

MATILDA PICOTTE (IRE), Sioux Nation–Hallie's Comet (Ire) (One Cool Cat)
Owner: Matilda & Kilmichael Racing Partnership
Breeder: Mighty Universe Ltd
Trainer: Kieran Cotter
Pedigree Notes/Form Analysis: Half-sister to four individual winners, none of which were any superstars, but the dam was group-placed over six furlongs as a 2-year-old and managed to win over a mile later in her career. Matilda Picotte emerged with plenty of credit from her G3 1000 Guineas Trial second when failing to get home on heavy ground having raced a bit keen on the front end. Must have big each-way claims if settling better off this stronger pace which is likely.

MAWJ (IRE), Exceed And Excel (Aus)–Modern Ideal (GB) (New Approach {Ire})
'TDN Rising Star'
Owner/Breeder: Godolphin
Trainer: Saeed bin Suroor
Pedigree Notes/Form Analysis: Half-sister to G1 French 2000 Guineas winner and GI Breeders' Cup Turf Mile scorer Modern Games (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) and classy performer Modern News (GB) (Shamardal). Beat Lezoo here in the G2 Duchess Of Cambridge S. last season and has already had a good year by winning back-to-back conditions races in Dubai.

MEDITATE (IRE), No Nay Never–Pembina (Ire) (Dalakhani {Ire})
Owner: M Tabor, D Smith, Mrs J Magnier & Westerberg
Breeder: Lynch-Bages & Rhinestone Bloodstock
Trainer: Aidan O'Brien
Sales History: €360,000 Arqana August yearling
Pedigree Notes/Form Analysis: Well-related to the nth degree, several of her relatives have been placed in this fillies' Classic, with Daban (Ire) (Acclamation {GB}) and Hathrah (Ire) (Linamix {Fr}) both third in 2017 and 2004, respectively. The only filly in the field with four graded/group wins, the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf heroine will be tough to beat.

NAOMI LAPAGLIA (GB), Awtaad (Ire)–Hawaafez (GB) (Nayef)
Owner: Edward Babington & Phil Cunningham
Breeder: Shadwell Estate Company Ltd.
Trainer: Richard Spencer
Sales History: 2,000gns Tattersalls December foal
Pedigree Notes/Form Analysis: A half-sister to the stakes-winning and dual Group 3-placed Rogue Millennium (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}), this filly is distant kin to Moonlight Cloud (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire]). Although she does hold a victory over the mile trip, Naomi Lapaglia's win was over the Kempton synthetic in her lone start to date.

OLIVIA MARALDA (IRE), Kodiac (GB)–Yajala (GB) (Fasliyev)
Owner: Amo Coutinho Syndicate
Breeder: Tally-Ho Stud
Trainer: Roger Varian
Sales History: 460,000gns Tattersalls Craven 2-year-old
Pedigree Notes/Form Analysis: One of three black-type horses out of the stakes-placed Yajala, Olivia Maralda is a half-sister to stakes winner Evil Spell (GB) (Dutch Art {GB}). She was second in the G2 Debutante by less than a length to Meditate, but it remains to be seen whether her progression has continued at three.

POLLY POTT (GB), Muhaarar (GB)–Must Be Me (GB) (Trade Fair {GB})
Owner: The Megsons
Breeder: Biddestone Stud Ltd.
Trainer: Ben Pauling
Sales History: 21,000gns Tattersalls October Book 2 yearling
Pedigree Notes/Form Analysis: From the family of G1 Sussex S. hero Mohaather (GB) (Showcasing {GB}), the bay is the fourth foal of her dam. A consistent sort, the G2 May Hill S. heroine should have no problem with the distance, as she makes her first start for Ben Pauling.

POWERDRESS (IRE), Dandy Man (Ire)–Nuclear Option (Ire) (Frozen Power {Ire})
Owner: Martin Hughes
Breeder: Milestream Stud Company Ltd.
Trainer: Richard Hannon
Sales History: €29,000 Goffs November foal; £130,000 Goffs UK Premier yearling
Pedigree Notes/Form Analysis: Her biggest claim to fame is her fourth dam, American Horse of the Year All Along (Fr) (Targowice). Yet to face stakes company, this maiden winner faces an uphill battle.

QUEEN ME (IRE), Dubawi (Ire)–Queen Kindly (GB) (Frankel {GB})
Owner: Jaber Abdullah
Breeder: Rabbah Bloodstock Ltd.
Trainer: Kevin Ryan
Pedigree Notes/Form Analysis: Out of the G2 Lowther S. heroine Queen Kindly, her second dam Lady Of The Desert (Rahy) claimed three group races and was placed three times at the highest level over sprint trips. Should finish in the top half of the field.

REMARQUEE (GB), Kingman (GB)–Regardez (GB) (Champs Elysees {GB})
Owner: J H Richmond-Watson
Breeder: Lawn Stud
Trainer: Ralph Beckett
Pedigree Notes/Form Analysis: Like Tahiyra yet to taste defeat, Remarquee is the fourth foal produced by American stakes winner Regardez, who ran third at Grade/Group 3 level thrice. Both of the Lawn Stud-bred's victories have occurred over seven furlongs, and if the cards fall just right, she could grab a piece of the Classic pie.

STENTON GLIDER (IRE), Dandy Man (Ire)–Crystal Malt (Ire) (Intikhab)
Owner: Mrs J Mairs & T S Mairs
Breeder: Laurence Kennedy
Trainer: Hugo Palmer
Sales History: £35,000 Tattersalls Ireland September yearling
Pedigree Notes/Form Analysis: The second foal out of her dam, a granddaughter of G3 May Hill S. winner Solar Crystal (Ire) (Alzao). She was only a neck behind Remarquee in the G3 Fred Darling S., and could improve yet again.

SWEET HARMONY (IRE), No Nay Never–Last Waltz (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire})
Owner: Phil Cunningham
Breeder: Rabbah Bloodstock Ltd.
Trainer: Richard Spencer
Pedigree Notes/Form Analysis: A maiden winner, the bay is the second produce of Memories Of Silver S. second and G3 Weld Park S. third Last Waltz. Also related to G1 Lockinge S. winner Keltos (Fr) (Kendor {Fr}), this affair looks a stiff ask.

TAHIYRA (IRE), Siyouni (Fr)–Tarana (Ire) (Cape Cross {Ire})
'TDN Rising Star'
Owner: HH Aga Khan
Breeder: His Highness The Aga Khan's Studs S C
Trainer: Dermot Weld
Pedigree Notes/Form Analysis: The G1 Moyglare Stud S. heroine is the third foal out of her dual stakes-winning dam who was also third in the G3 Curragh Cup over 1 3/4 miles. Tarana has already thrown transatlantic heavy weight and Breeders' Cup heroine Tarnawa (Ire) (Shamardal). Thanks to the storms making their way through the region, her chances of success have only increased, as her Moyglare victory was accomplished in soft ground.

QIPCO 2000 Guineas: Where Did They Come From?

The G1 QIPCO 2000 Guineas sees a contentious field of 14 try their hands at gaining an all-important Classic next to their names. Aidan O'Brien and the Coolmore partners bring two striking colts to the fray in potential G1 Betfred Derby headliner Auguste Rodin and G1 Phoenix S. winner Little Big Bear. Juddmonte's star Chaldean is looking for redemption after dislodging retiring reinsman Frankie Dettori in the G3 Greenham S. last month. If the latter duo succeed, it would be the Italian's fourth Guineas. We took a look at the story behind each of the 14 runners for this first Classic of the British Flat season.

AUGUSTE RODIN (IRE), Deep Impact (Jpn)–Rhododendron (Ire) (Galileo {Ire})
'TDN Rising Star'
Owner: M Tabor & D Smith & Mrs J Magnier & Westerberg
Breeder: Coolmore
Trainer: Aidan O'Brien
Pedigree Notes/Form Analysis: First foal out of the top-class triple Group 1 winner Rhododendron, who achieved her top-flight successes in the Fillies' Mile, Prix de l'Opera and Lockinge S. Rhododendron is a full-sister to multiple Group 1 winner Magical and Group 3 winner Flying The Flag and is herself a daughter of Irish 1000 Guineas winner Halfway To Heaven (Ire) (Pivotal {GB}). Auguste Rodin is already proven over the trip and should get further. Deserved favourite.

CHALDEAN (GB), Frankel (GB)–Suelita (GB) (Dutch Art {GB})
Owner: Juddmonte
Breeder: Whitsbury Manor Stud
Trainer: Andrew Balding
Sales History: 550,000gns Tattersalls December foal
Pedigree Notes/Form Analysis: The sixth foal out of the unraced Dutch Art mare Suelita, who has produced high-class horses over sprint trips, including Alkumait (GB) (Showcasing {GB}), winner of the G2 Mill Reef S. and now standing at Castlefield Stud for €5,000. Slight question mark on whether he will see out the mile and, despite coming into the race off the back of a mishap in the Greenham, he brings arguably the best 2-year-old form to the table.

CHARYN (IRE), (Dark Angel {Ire})–Futoon (Ire) (Kodiac {Ire})
Owner: Nurlan Bizakov
Breeder: Grangemore Stud
Trainer: Roger Varian
Sales History: 250,000gns Tattersalls October Book 2 yearling
Pedigree Notes/Form Analysis: A full-brother to Wings Of War (Ire), a smart operator in Britain over six furlongs for Clive Cox before being sold to Hong Kong. The dam is listed-placed and a five-furlong winner who hails from a speedy family being a daughter of a winning-sister to G2 Mill Reef S. winner Galeota (Ire) (Mujadil). No match for Isaac Shelby (GB) (Night Of Thunder {Ire}) in the G3 Greenham S. and career-best needed to get involved.

DUBAI MILE (IRE), Roaring Lion–Beach Bunny (Ire) (High Chaparral {Ire})
Owner: Ahmad Al Shaikh
Breeder: Skymarc Farm
Trainer: Charlie Johnston
Sales History: €20,000 Goffs Orby yearling
Pedigree Notes/Form Analysis: The ninth foal out of notable performer Beach Bunny, a listed winner and multiple group-placed for Lady O'Reilly, including when second in the G1 Pretty Polly S. at the Curragh. Has produced two black-type performers–Naadirr (Ire) (Oasis Dream {GB}) and Beach Belle (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire})–as well as nine individual winners from as many runners. Tough task given he showed his best form at two when battling to G1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud glory over an extra couple of furlongs on heavy ground. May not have the pace required.

FLIGHT PLAN (GB), Night Of Thunder (Ire)–Romp (GB) (Pivotal {GB})
Owner: Clipper Logistics
Breeder: Miss K J Keir
Trainer: Karl Burke
Sales History: 150,000gns Tattersalls October Book 2 yearling
Pedigree Notes/Form Analysis: The fourth foal out of a half-sister to Group 2-winning miler Robadallo (GB) (Lope De Vega {Ire}) who has already produced a winner in Hot Affair (GB) (Ivawood {Ire}). Warmed up for this with a second-placed effort in a listed contest on the all-weather at Newcastle. Lots to find on all known form.

GALERON (IRE), Camacho (Ire)–Society Gal (Ire) (Galileo {Ire})
Owner: Teme Valley & Aura (Gas) Holdings Ltd
Breeder: Gigginstown House Stud
Trainer: Charlie Hills
Sales History: €45,000 Goffs Orby yearling
Pedigree Notes/Form Analysis: The ninth foal and half-brother to five individual winners. Dam is an unraced half-sister to Group 3 winner in America Good Mood (Ire) (Danehill Dancer (Ire). Experienced runner but plenty to find on the protagonists.

HI ROYAL (IRE), Kodiac (GB)–Majestic Roi (Street Cry {Ire})
'TDN Rising Star'
Owner: Jaber Abdullah
Breeder: Rabbah Bloodstock Limited
Trainer: Kevin Ryan
Pedigree Notes/Form Analysis: Half-brother to five winners including black-type performers over a mile and upwards Noor Al Hawa (Fr) (Makfi {GB}) and Majestic Jasmine (Ire) (New Approach {Ire}). Dam won the G1 Sun Chariot S. Unexposed with just three runs under his belt and one of the more interesting outsiders.

HOLLOWAY BOY (GB), Ulysses (Ire)–Sultry (GB) (Pivotal {GB})
Owner: Nick White & Mrs. E Burke
Breeder: Cheveley Park Stud, Ltd.
Trainer: Karl Burke
Sales History: 60,000gns Tattersalls December foal; 60,000gns Tattersalls October Book 2 yearling.
Pedigree Notes/Form Analysis: The listed winner has placed four times at group level and was third in the G1 Vertem Futurity Trophy. This is the family of G1 Cheveley Park S. heroine Gay Gallanta (Woodman) and her son, the multiple group winner and sire Byron (GB) (Green Desert). Has already found several too good over course-and-distance last autumn.

INDESTRUCTIBLE (IRE), Kodiac (GB)–Shareva (Ire) (Rip Van Winkle {Ire})
Owner: Amo Racing, Ltd.
Breeder: Tally-Ho Stud
Trainer: Karl Burke
Sales History: 55,000gns, vendor, Tattersalls October Book 2;  €150,000 Arqana Breeze-Up Sale.
Pedigree Notes/Form Analysis: Successful in the G2 Champagne S. at two, the bay is out of a half to three-time group winner Shamreen (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) and G3 Singspiel S. hero Shahroze (Ire) (Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}). Shamreen has thrown G2 Railway S. winner Shartash (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}), twice placed at the highest level. Best on the day in the G3 Greenham S. after Chaldean's ill luck, but would need to bring his absolute top effort.

LITTLE BIG BEAR (IRE), No Nay Never–Adventure Seeker (Fr) (Bering {GB})
'TDN Rising Star'
Owner: D Smith, Mrs J Mangier, M Tabor & Westerberg
Breeder: Cammas Park Stud & Summerhill
Trainer: Aidan O'Brien
Sales History: €320,000 Arqana August Yearling Sale.
Pedigree Notes/Form Analysis: A winner of the G1 Phoenix S. and G3 Anglesey S., the son of stakes winner and G3 Prix Cleopatra runner-up Adventure Seeker counts five-time Group 1 winner All Along (Fr) (Targowice) as his third dam. Not as long-winded has his stablemate, but a classy individual regardless. It will be his first time going beyond 6 1/2 furlongs.

NOBLE STYLE (GB), Kingman (GB)–Eartha Kitt (GB) (Pivotal {GB})
'TDN Rising Star'
Owner: Godolphin
Breeder: Chasemore Farm
Trainer: Charlie Appleby
Sales History: 525,000gns Tattersalls October Yearling Book 1.
Pedigree Notes/Form Analysis: Out of a listed-winning half-sister to Listed Chesham S. winner Arthur Kitt (GB) (Camelot {GB}) who ran third in the G3 Solario S., the G2 Gimcrack S. victor's second dam is G2 Queen Mary S. winner Ceiling Kitty (GB) (Red Clubs {Ire}). One of the leading fancies, and could avenge his sire's runner-up finish in the 2014 edition.

ROYAL SCOTSMAN (IRE), Gleneagles (Ire)–Enrol (GB) (Pivotal {GB})
Owner: Mrs Fitri Hay
Breeder: Rabbah Bloodstock, Ltd.
Trainer: Paul & Oliver Cole
Sales History: 125,000gns Tattersalls October Yearling Book 2.
Pedigree Notes/Form Analysis: The G2 Richmond S. winner and G1 Dewhurst S. runner-up is out of a multiple stakes-placed granddaughter of the stakes-winning mare Appointed One (Danzig), herself a half-sister to G1 Futurity S. winner Bakharoff (The Minstrel). One of the better prospects, and his sire was responsible for a brace of Italian Guineas winners on the weekend.

SAKHEER (IRE), Zoffany (Ire)–Shortmile Lady (Ire) (Arcano {Ire})
'TDN Rising Star'
Owner: KHK Racing, Ltd.
Breeder: Drumlin Bloodstock
Trainer: Roger Varian
Sales History: 80,000gns Tattersalls December Foal Sale ; $65,000 RNA, Keeneland September; €550,000 Arqana Breeze-Up Sale.
Pedigree Notes/Form Analysis: Already a half-brother to multiple group/graded winner Lemista (Ire) (Raven's Pass) who ran third in the GI Beverly D. S., the G2 Mill Reef S. hero is from the same family as GI Kentucky Derby-winning filly Winning Colors (Caro {Ire}). Bolted up by six lengths at Haydock and maintained his brilliance at Newbury, but has never been beyond six furlongs.

SILVER KNOTT (GB), Lope De Vega (Ire)–God Given (Ire) (Nathaniel {Ire})
Owner: Godolphin
Breeder: St Albans Bloodstock, LLP
Trainer: Charlie Appleby
Sales History: 725,000gns Tattersalls October Yearling Sale Book 1.
Pedigree Notes/Form Analysis: A dual Group 3 winner before running second in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf, Silver Knott is out of Italian Group 1 winner God Given, herself a half-sister to four-time Group 1 winner-turned Darley sire Postponed (Ire) (Dubaw {Ire}). His third dam is G1 Moyglare Stud heroine Bianca Nera (GB) (Salse). Already a winner over this trip and surface and he was a whisker behind Victoria Road (Ire) (Saxon Warrior {Jpn}) at Keeneland.

Where Did They Come From: G1 Juddmonte Irish Oaks

Although the €500,000 G1 Juddmonte Irish Oaks will not be a clash of the G1 Cazoo Oaks one-two Tuesday (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and Emily Upjohn (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}), the latter withdrawn due to transportation issues at the 11th hour on Friday morning, there is plenty of quality in the seven-horse field still signed on. Aidan O'Brien is not empty-handed with the withdrawal of Tuesday either, as he will still run three for the Coolmore partners, led by Toy (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}).

Prix du Jockey Club: Where Did They Come From?

The 2100-metre G1 Qatar Prix du Jockey Club has a horse for everyone, from multi-generational blue-blooded homebreds, to a $535,000 OBS breezer and everything in between. Godolphin's Modern Games (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) is aiming for his third Group/Grade 1 victory in a row after wins in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf at Del Mar last autumn and in the G1 Poule d'Essai des Poulains in May.

She also has the unraced juvenile colt Vazirpour (GB) (Camelot {GB}) to come.
