What’s in a Name: Audarya

The winner of the GI Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf was named by her fortunate owner after a Sardinian wine company, according to her trainer–the great James Fanshawe of Pegasus Stables in Newmarket.

Among the wines that the Audarya winery produces are their versions of the increasingly popular Cannonau (red, goes well with red meats, separates the men from the boys) and old stalwart Vermentino (white, goes with seafood and cheeses, separates the female side in all of us).

The winery website states that “Audarya means ‘nobility of the soul’ in an ancient oriental language” (probably Sanskrit, the “link language” of the Orient). As the horse is often called “the noble animal,” the name is fitting and inspired. In vino veritas.

What’s in a Name: Khartoum

There is a lot of African geography in the background of 2-year-old Khartoum (Pioneerof the Nile-Up (Ire), by Galileo {Ire}). Khartoum, the capital of Sudan, is where the Blue Nile (from Lake Tana in Ethiopia) and the White Nile (from Lake Victoria) meet and unite, forming a greater river.

“From there [Khartoum], the Nile continues to flow north towards Egypt and the Mediterranean Sea,” states Wikipedia. The Nile is maybe the longest river in the world (the Amazon has a similar claim) and has always been very important to the agricultures of Sudan and Egypt.

So the name of this brilliant young winner is ingeniously linked to the one of his sire (also noteworthy for his creative spacing, or lack of it). The Egyptian theme was already very much present in the family with another son of mother Up, older brother and group competitor Monarch of Egypt (), who is by-yes, you guessed right-American Pharoah.

What’s in a Name: Whiskey and Rye

The brave 2-year-old winning filly WHISKEY AND RYE carries another ingenious name derived from the famous song “American Pie” by Don McLean, an American singer-songwriter who had his very great day in the sun in the early ’70s. “And them good ole boys were drinking whiskey and rye/Singin’ this’ll be the day that I die” go the lyrics of the refrain of that classic hit. The dam AVA G has an interesting and suggestive name in her own right, being by AFTERNOON DEELITES out of AFFIRMED MISS, and adds a bit of glamour to it all. The divine Ava Lavinia Gardner was a screen legend in the ’50s, breaking many hearts–including Frank Sinatra’s, who notoriously was no shrinking violet.

The very fast and now Group 3 winner 2-year-old filly Plainchant (Fr) (Gregorian {Ire}-Nadinska {GB}, by Doyen {Ire}) has a learned name straight out of the Early Middle Ages. “Plainchant is a form of medieval church music that involves chanting or words that are sung, without any instrumental accompaniment”, according to Wikipedia, and a Gregorian chant is its more popular and famous variation, often credited by legend to Pope Gregory I (590-604). The stallion Gregorian is by Clodovil (Ire), whose name may be an alteration or a reference to the name of Clovis, the first king of the Franks (died 511) and founder of the Merovingian dynasty (later maligned as les rois fainéants). This talented young filly is trained by Maurizio Guarnieri, a member of the up and coming group of Italian trainers in France–a migration phenomenon that, in general terms, is both new and old: some Latin cousins from beyond the Alps have historically done well in France. Napoleone Buonaparte, Amedeo Modigliani and Yves Montand come to mind.
