Changingoftheguard Extends Galileo Record in the Chester Vase

Westerberg and Coolmore's Changingoftheguard (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) may have face markings in the form of a question mark, but there was no doubting his class in Wednesday's G3 Boodles Chester Vase as the 10-3 chance bounded to an impressive 6 1/2-length triumph and extended sire Galileo's world-record tally of stakes winners to 349 in the day's extended 12-furlong feature. He had previously graduated by six lengths in an April Fools' Day maiden at Dundalk in his fourth start on seasonal return. Ryan Moore, who had made all aboard Ballydoyle's Thoughts of June (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) in the Listed Cheshire Oaks earlier on the card, set out to repeat the dose and was clear of his three rivals passing the judge first time. Allowed a breather as the others took closer order at halfway, the April-foaled bay was stirred into action with a half mile remaining and powered clear under mild urging in the latter stages to easily rout Godolphin's hitherto undefeated New London (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) by daylight for a career high. Adding to Thoughts of June's Listed Cheshire Oaks prize, Changingoftheguard extended the aforementioned new world record for Galileo to 349 and joined an honour roll which has amassed a tally approaching $200-million in stakes earnings for his 12-time champion sire. The April-foaled bay has been installed at ante-post odds of 8-1 second favourite for Epsom's June 4 G1 Cazoo Derby where, in addition to two winners as damsire, he will bid to become a record-extending sixth winner of the Blue Riband for Galileo.

“Aidan [O'Brien] felt that the horse had improved substantially since his win at Dundalk and he felt he was going to appreciate the step up in trip, so we're happy with that,” said Coolmore's Kevin Buckley. “These trials help us see what we've got and where they are and now we know with him. I would presume it's highly likely that he will head to Epsom. Aidan will have to speak to the owners, obviously, but why not? We all love the Derby and we want to win it so the more representation we have, the better. I think he's fairly flexible in terms of the ground. He acted on the all-weather at Dundalk and he handled those [soft] conditions today, so he's versatile. He's just won a trial emphatically and it's a record-breaking 10th Chester Vase for Aidan. We felt he'd improved and we're finding out where we are at the moment so we could not be happier with that performance and the winning distance too. We're in the middle of the trials now, we'll have runners in them all and see where we are after the Dante.”

“He was impressive there and we always thought he'd stay well,” O'Brien said. “He was just chinned in his [Sept. 14] maiden at Punchestown before he then went and won his maiden really well at Dundalk. There was no doubt on our part that he would take a step forward from that and improve for going up in trip. The one thing we weren't sure about today was the [soft] ground when it rained as he's such a fluid mover, but he seems to have handled it fine. We were delighted with the run and I think off the back of that, you'd have to say he'd go to Epsom now.”

Ryan Moore, collecting a record eighth Chester Vase of his own, added, “He was very impressive today. Stepping up in trip suited him and you never know with these 3-year-olds how much they're going to improve as they go up in trip. He beat a well-regarded colt, he's only just beginning to come so we wouldn't be sure what he's going to be yet, but it's a very good performance.”

Charlie Appleby's assistant Alex Merriam conceded the 4-11 favourite New London was undone by the better horse and reflected, “He just never got into it for whatever reason and Will [Buick] said he couldn't put his finger on it. Whether it was the ground or the track, it's back to the drawing board and there are a couple more trials to go. We don't want to blame the track or the ground, we were beaten by the better horse on the day.” Buick added, “The winner piled it on from the front and stayed at it. I'm sure the winner is a decent horse, but this lad has got a lot to learn still.”

Changingoftheguard, the third of five foals, is the lone scorer for GII Honey Fox S. and GIII My Charmer H. victrix Lady Lara (Ire) (Excellent Art {GB}), herself the leading performer out of a full-sister to Listed Hyde S. victor and G3 Criterion S. runner-up Edinburgh Knight (Ire) (Selkirk). His third dam Pippas Song (GB) (Reference Point {GB}), a daughter of G2 Nassau S. winner Dancing Rocks (GB) (Green Dancer), is a half-sister to G3 Prestige S. victrix Glatisant (GB) (Rainbow Quest), who produced G1SW sires Footstepsinthesand (GB) (Giant's Causeway) and Pedro The Great (Henrythenavigator). Descendants of Dancing Rocks also include G1 Yorkshire Oaks third Rockerlong (GB) (Deploy {GB}), MG1SP sire Mahler (GB) (Galileo {Ire}) and MG1SP European champion Superstar Leo (Ire) (College Chapel {GB}).

No Nay Never’s Deneuve Earns Rising Star Tag at Naas

Monday's Irish Stallion Farms EBF Fillies Maiden at Naas was under the co-sponsorship of Coolmore's No Nay Never in 2017 and 2018, when Alpha Centauri (Ire) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}) and Fairyland (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}) launched their Group 1-laden careers by earning 'TDN Rising Star' status in the six-furlong contest, and this term's renewal went the way of Coolmore and Westerberg's Deneuve (Ire), a daughter of No Nay Never, who emulated those illustrious distaffers by digging deep for a debut success and a 'TDN Rising Star' of her own. The 13-8 favourite looked ready for the task beforehand and was well away to stalk the front two in a close third through halfway. Unflustered for the most part, she was nudged along passing the quarter-mile marker and exhibited a willing attitude, despite rolling around when quickening under late urging, to deny the tenacious pacesetter Comanche Country (Ire) (Highland Reel {Ire}) by a short head on the line. Her win was a fifth juvenile success, from just seven runners, for Aidan O'Brien.

“She's a grand filly and was babyish enough, but we haven't done an awful lot with her,” said the winning trainer. “She did plenty early, but had a little bit of a hold-up about six weeks ago and was only just ready to come racing today. We thought it was a lovely race for her. It was lovely ground, it's a lovely track and we thought the experience would do her good. Ryan [Moore] was very happy with her, he nursed her as best he could and felt there should be plenty of progress to come. We'll probably give her two to three weeks before she comes back. It will be interesting to see how much progress she does make. It's possible she could make plenty.”

Deneuve is the lone registered foal produced by MGSW G1 Phoenix S. third Actress (Ire) (Declaration of War), runner-up to Alpha Centauri in the 2017 renewal of this heat, who is a daughter of MGSW GI Spinaway S. second Nasty Storm (Gulch). Descendants of Nasty Storm, herself out of a multiple-winning half to MGSP sire Majesty's Imp (His Majesty), include last term's leading Italian juvenile filly and G2 Premio Dormello winner Atamisque (Ire) (Highland Reel {Ire}), GIII Santa Barbara S. victrix Causeforcommotion (Americain), G2 Gran Criterium third Amyntas (Ity) (Desert Prince {Ire}) and GIII Sweetest Chant S. third Born To Be Winner (Einstein {Brz}).

No Nay Never’s Aesop’s Fables Powers To TDN Rising Stardom at Navan

Aidan O'Brien's juvenile band is approaching full swing and the trainer's latest representative to hit the track, Coolmore and Westerberg's Aesop's Fables (Ire) (No Nay Never), earned 'TDN Rising Star' status with a taking debut display in Saturday's Irish Stallion Farms EBF Maiden at Navan. The 5 3/4-furlong dash was annexed last year by subsequent G3 Marble Hill S. runner-up, G2 Coventry S. fourth and G2 Railway S. third Masseto (GB) (Territories}) and Royal Ascot options abound for the half-brother to that meeting's Listed Windsor Castle S. hero Washington DC (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}) following a 2 1/4-length defeat of Tanaiyla (Ire) (Siyouni {Fr}). The 7-4 second favourite was sharply into stride from the outside stall to stalk the experienced 10-11 favourite Midnight Toker (Ire) (Acclamation {GB}) in a close-up second through the early fractions. Nudged along at halfway, he came under increased urging once quickening to challenge passing the quarter-mile marker and found an additional gear inside the final furlong to go comfortably clear of his rivals.

“He's a very smart horse and has done all his homework very nicely,” commented Ballydoyle representative Chris Armstrong. “Aidan [O'Brien] was very happy with him and Ryan [Moore] has sat on him a few times and was very happy with him. We'll try and give him one run before [Royal] Ascot. It will either be in the valuable winners' race at Naas or there's a winners-of-one at the Curragh on June 1st. Then hopefully on to Ascot. Fingers crossed he is a very smart horse going forward. He's obviously from the family of Washington DC, who was a precocious 2-year-old, he's got plenty of options and is one you would love to have in your stable.”

Aesop's Fables is the latest of eight foals and sixth winner from as many runners produced by Listed Land O' Burns Fillies' S. third How's She Cuttin' (Ire) (Shinko Forest {Ire}), herself the leading performer out of a half-sister to the stakes-placed Escape Plan (Ire) (Key of Luck) and to the unraced dam of G3 Firth of Clyde S. victrix and G1 Cheveley Park S. runner-up Aspen Darlin (Ire) (Indian Haven {GB}). Hailing from the family of MG1SW sire Grand Lodge (Chief's Crown), the February-foaled bay is a half to G3 Phoenix Sprint S. victor and MG1SP sire Washington DC (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}) and G3 Chester vase runner-up Sandhurst (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}).

American Pharoah Filly Powers To ‘TDN Rising Stardom’ at Leopardstown

Coolmore and Westerberg's sophomore filly Above The Curve (American Pharoah) caught the eye when overcoming a slow getaway to finish strongly for third in a one-mile Leopardstown maiden last October. Back at the Foxrock venue for Wednesday's 10-furlong Irish Stallion Farms EBF Fillies Maiden, a contest won in 2019 by MG1SW distaffer Tarnawa (Ire) (Shamardal), she stamped her class on a field stacked with well-bred individuals to earn 'TDN Rising Star' status with an eyecatching display. The 6-5 favourite was more in focus at the break this time and settled off the tempo out wide in midfield through halfway. Making smooth headway into contention on the home turn, she quickened in taking fashion to seize control approaching the final furlong and kept on strongly under mild coaxing in the latter stages to easily outpoint Thoughts of June (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) by 2 3/4 lengths.

“We think a lot of her,” revealed trainer Joseph O'Brien of the June 3 G1 Epsom Oaks and July 16 G1 Irish Oaks entry. “She had a really good run last year and has an amazing pedigree. We couldn't ask for more and we'll see where we go now, but we think she's an [Irish] Oaks type. She's very big so we'll manage her gently, maybe something like the [G3] Blue Wind [at Naas next month] would suit. We won't throw her in at the deep end and we'll take baby steps with her. She really is huge, in a way she's nearly too big, and we'll have to manage her correctly. She hasn't done anything wrong so far anyway. I don't think she will be an Epsom [Oaks] filly and I think we will look at the Curragh [for the Irish Oaks], but it is early days to be targeting that.”

Above The Curve is the third of five foals and second scorer out of an unraced sibling of eight black-type performers headed by MG1SW sire Giant's Causeway (Storm Cat). She is a full-sister to G3 Irish 1000 Guineas Trial and G3 Weld Park S. third Thinking Of You and her dam Fabulous (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), who was bred to Justify last year, has a 2-year-old filly and yearling filly by Justify to come. Descendants of the April-foaled bay's MGSW second dam Mariah's Storm (Rahy), herself a half-sister to G1SP sire Panoramic (GB) (Rainbow Quest), also include MG1SW sires Gleneagles (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and Decorated Knight (GB) (Galileo {Ire}), Classic heroines Joan of Arc (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and Marvellous (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), MG1SW distaffer Happily (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and elite-level performers Vatican City (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), Coolmore (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and Taj Mahal (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}).
