First Foal for Happy Saver

Happy Saver (Super Saver–Happy Week, by Distorted Humor), winner of the 2020 GI Jockey Club Gold Cup S., was represented by his first foal when Planeta (Giant's Causeway) produced a filly last week. The filly was born at Hagyard Farm, which was also the birthplace of Happy Saver and home of the Kentucky nursery of his breeder, Wertheimer and Frere.

The foal was bred by Hagyard Farm assistant manager Jose Sarinana, who also helped raise her sire.

Happy Saver was our best foal, best yearling and went on to be our best racehorse in my time here at Hagyard Farm,” Sarinana said. “I wouldn't expect any less from his foals and having this well-balanced filly carrying Happy Saver's traits makes me very happy.”

Carrying the Wertheimers' colors, Happy Saver hit the board in 11 of 13 starts, with five wins and earnings of $1,258,100. In addition to his Gold Cup win, he also won the 2020 Federico Tesio S. and was second in the 2021 Gold Cup and GI Clark S., as well as the 2022 GI Metropolitan H. and GI Whitney S.

The Wertheimers partnered with Airdrie Stud for Happy Saver's stallion career following his retirement from racing.

Happy Saver will stand the 2024 breeding season at Airdrie for a fee of $10,000.

Wertheimer’s Galawi to Stand at Northview

Wertheimer and Frere's Galawi (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}–Galikova {Fr}, by Galileo {Ire}), a maiden winner in his only U.S. start who hails from the immediate family of champion Goldikova (Ire) (Anabaa), has been injured and retired to Northview Stallion Station near Chesapeake City, Md. He will stand in 2022 for $2,000, stands and nurses.

Galawi is out of G1 Qatar Prix Vermeille winner Galikova, the younger half-sister of multiple French, English, and U.S. champion Goldikova. In addition to her 11 Group 1 scores in France and England, Goldikova captured three consecutive editions of the GI Breeders' Cup Mile. A number of other members of the deep family are Group winners as well.

Like the majority of the family, Galawi was campaigned as a homebred for Wertheimer and Frere. He began his career in 2020 in France for the Carlos Laffon-Parias stable and notched two placings before shipping stateside to Graham Motion's barn. The 4-year-old debuted in the U.S. June 27 of this year with a 10-furlong, 1 1/2-length, last-to-first score on the Belmont turf.

“He was extremely impressive in the morning and had a real presence about him,” said Motion. “No doubt in my mind he was stakes caliber. He's just a very classy horse.”

Continued Motion, “He's stunning looking and has a phenomenal pedigree. I feel he has a stallion's pedigree. I just didn't anticipate him having to be a stallion so soon.”

Tapit Son of Zaftig Charges to Rising Stardom

Wertheimer and Frere homebred ZATIP (Tapit), a son of Grade I winner Zaftig (Gone West), turned on the after burners late to become the second 'TDN Rising Star' of the day at Keeneland Thursday afternoon. Off slow in his turf sprint unveiling at Laurel Oct. 1, he rallied to be fifth and was given a 5-1 chance in this switch to the main track over a wet surface. Drawn in post 11 of 12, the chestnut was hustled away from the stalls this time by James Graham and went straight to the front, contesting the pace alongside Coffee With Alex (Quality Road) through a :22.98 opening quarter and :46.08 half-mile. The pair turned for home together and continued to battled down the lane, but Zatip kicked it into high gear in the final sixteenth, charging clear to win by 4 1/2 lengths. Jego (Uncle Mo) made a late run to take second from Coffee With Alex. Zatip is the 48th 'TDN Rising Star' by perennial leading sire Tapit.

Wertheimer and Frere purchased GI Acorn S. victress Zaftig for $1.4 million in foal to Candy Ride (Arg) at the 2011 Fasig-Tipton November Sale. She produced a full-brother to the winner named Rugbyman, who was also tabbed a 'TDN Rising Star' for these connections and finished second in the Easy Goer S. She is also the dam of SW & MGSP Spinoff (Hard Spun). The 16-year-old mare has not produced a foal since Zatip. Zaftig is a daughter of fellow Grade I winner Zoftig (Cozzene), who also produced GISW Zo Impressive (Hard Spun), dam of MGSW Souper Tapit (Tapit).

On to Breeders’ Cup for Max Player

George Hall and Sport BLX Thoroughbreds' Max Player (Honor Code) will train up to the Nov. 6 GI Breeders' Cup Classic at Del Mar following his win in Saturday's GI Jockey Club Gold Cup, trainer Steve Asmussen confirmed Sunday.

“Max Player is better than he's ever been and physically he's developed into this,” Asmussen said. “There's more of him. He's a horse that's continued to grow, fill out and mature. There's a lot more of Max Player as a 4-year-old than there was as a 3-year-old. He's bigger and stronger. His next race will be the Breeders' Cup Classic.”

When Del Mar last hosted the Breeders' Cup in 2017, Asmussen was represented by Classic winner Gun Runner (Candy Ride {Arg}) and he plans to follow a similar schedule ahead of this year's championship weekend with Max Player.

“We just want to acclimate them to West Coast time,” Asmussen said. “For previous Breeders' Cups in California, we like to get out there and be on Pacific Coast time and I think we've gotten solid runs doing that, so we're planning on doing the same this time. Last time the Breeders' Cup was at Del Mar, we had Gun Runner. He went out and trained at Santa Anita before going to Del Mar.”

Also expected to train up to the Breeders' Cup Classic is Wertheimer and Frere's Happy Saver (Super Saver), who was second while attempting to defend his title in Saturday's Jockey Club Gold Cup for trainer Todd Pletcher.

“There wasn't a lot of pace and he was sort of bottled up. He was wanting to advance, but didn't really get the opportunity until it was too late. The winner was very good and he got the jump on him,” Pletcher said of the Gold Cup result. “I was happy with his performance and he closed well, which is probably a little better suited to a race where there's more pace and everybody spreads out a little more. He got a good trip, but it was behind the wrong pace scenario. He came back in good shape.”

Pletcher also saddled Bass Racing's Annapolis (War Front) to a 'TDN Rising Star' debut over the turf at Saratoga Saturday.

“I was very pleased with him. He trained well into it and delivered the type of performance we were hoping for,” Pletcher said. “The race was slow to develop and the early fractions weren't really fast, but I liked the way he picked it up around the turn. He finished strongly and galloped out well.”

Pletcher said the colt, a son of graded stakes winner My Miss Sophia (Unbridled's Song), would likely make his next start in the Oct. 3 GII Pilgrim S. over the Belmont lawn, but he did not rule out eventually starting the colt over the dirt.

“At this stage, he's shown us he's a little better on the turf, but he's a big, strong colt,” Pletcher said. “Obviously the mare was second in the Kentucky Oaks, but sometimes these type of horses, as they mature, they get better on the dirt, but for now we'll stay focused on the turf.”
