July Course Weighing Room And Head-on Stand To Be Redeveloped

The weighing room and head-on stand at Newmarket's July Course will be redeveloped between 2022 and 2023, The Jockey Club announced on Wednesday. The internal layout and facilities of the weighing room will be upgraded as part of an ongoing industry-wide project. However, the traditional thatched roof overlooking the winner's enclosure will be retained. Both the head-on stand and trackside bar facilities will be upgraded and include a first-floor viewing terrace with stunning views of the racecourse. The head-on stand will receive a new roof and the project will also contain sustainability improvements for the July Course via solar panels and low-energy lighting.

Sophie Able, General Manager of Newmarket Racecourses, said, “The new complex will give racing professionals and participants the top-class facilities they need as well as enhancing the customer experience, all whilst maintaining the unique look and feel of The July Course. We are looking forward to work beginning in the autumn and finishing the project before racing returns in June 2023.”

Weighing Room Covid Test Requirement Waived

British racing has dropped mandatory Covid-19 testing for weighing room entry effective Thursday, following the change to self-isolation rules in England. Access to the weighing room will continue to be restricted to essential personnel.

British Horseracing Authority Chief Medical Adviser Dr. Jerry Hill said, “Throughout the pandemic, we have endeavoured to make evidence-based decisions that protect our people and safeguard the industry against Covid-19-related disruption. In recent months, testing for weighing room personnel has been a crucial part of this strategy and I'd again like to thank everyone for their continued patience and cooperation. Changes to self-isolation rules, together with promising signs in infection data, enable us to bring forward an end to mandatory testing, although testing on a voluntary basis is still recommended. As emphasised previously, Covid-19 still exists, so please continue to do what you can to reduce your own risk and prioritise the health and livelihood of others.”

BHA Bullying Hearing Day 2: ‘The Isolation I Felt For Speaking Out I Wouldn’t Wish On Anyone’

The British Horseracing Authority's hearing into the jockey's room bullying case brought by female national hunt jockey Bryony Frost against male rider Robbie Dunne entered its second day on Wednesday.

After opening statements from Frost's attorney on Tuesday detailed the nature of the charges against Dunne, Frost was on the stand for much of today's hearing and underwent heavy cross examination from Dunne's representative Roderick Moore, according to racingpost.com.

One of Moore's primary arguments was that other female jockeys had not spoken out about malevolent behavior from Dunne.

“The isolation I felt for speaking out I wouldn't wish on anyone,” Frost countered. “You are asking me for my opinion and they [the other female riders] have to go into the weighing room every day. I feel they are protecting themselves and, rightly so, staying neutral.”

Dunne faces charges for seven individual rule breeches: four for conduct prejudicial to racing, and three for acting in a violent or improper manner. He denies all but one of the charges.

The hearing will continue on Thursday, and three days have been blocked out for continuation next week, if needed.
