Weekend Lineup Presented By Del Mar Ship & Win: Long And Winding Road To The Kentucky Derby

There was a time not so long ago that the undercard for the Grade 1 Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs was similar to a bad warm-up act at a major rock concert. Something to sit through while waiting for the main attraction.

It's not that way any more.

Saturday's 10-hour, 14-race extravaganza, which gets under way at 10:30 a.m. ET and runs until 8:30 p.m., has a little something for everyone. There are eight graded stakes, half of them Grade 1, featuring some of the best turf and dirt runners around going short and long. Similarly, Friday's G1 Kentucky Oaks card is a 13-race marathon with six graded stakes. It's not just the horses that have to display stamina.

Post time for the Oaks on Friday is 5:51 p.m., with Saturday's Derby scheduled for 6:57 p.m. Both races will be televised on NBC and streamed live on Peacock.

The main event, the Kentucky Derby, has taken a number of twists and turns in the lead-up to the race, including on Friday morning with the announcement that Skinner, the third-place finisher in the G1 Santa Anita Derby, will be scratched because of an elevated temperature. That followed Thursday's news that saw three defections:  Santa Anita Derby winner Practical Move (elevated temperature), Japanese runner Continuar (trainer's decision), and G2 Wood Memorial winner Lord Miles (by order of the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission).

Those four scratches permitted the three also-eligibles (Cyclone Mischief, Mandarin Hero, and King Russell) into the Derby field, but it also will leave one of the stalls empty in the 20-horse starting gate.

Friday

12:43 p.m. – Grade 2 Alysheba Stakes at Churchill Downs

Rich Strike, the 80-1 upset winner of the 2022 Kentucky Derby (G1), headlines a deep field of seven for the $600,000 Alysheba (G2) for 4-year-olds and up going 1 1/16 miles on the main track. Trained by Eric Reed, Rich Strike will be making his first start of 2023 after closing his 2022 campaign with an off-the-board finish in the Clark (G1). Sonny Leon retains the mount and will break from post three.

While Rich Strike may be the sentimental favorite, the betting public figures to key in on a trio of established older runners – Art Collector, West Will Power, and Last Samurai.

Trained by Bill Mott, Art Collector was a 4 ½-length winner of the Pegasus World Cup Invitational (G1) prior to running second in the New Orleans Classic (G2). The earner of more than $4 million, Art Collector will be ridden by Junior Alvarado and break from post one.

Second in the Clark last fall and recent winner of the New Orleans Classic, West Will Power has earned more than $1 million in compiling a 15-6-7-0 record. Trained by Brad Cox and will be ridden by Flavien Prat and break from post four.

Last Samurai, an earner of more than $2 million and a three-time graded stakes winner, comes into the Alysheba off a narrow defeat in the Oaklawn Handicap (G2) on April 22. Trained by D. Wayne Lukas, Last Samurai will break from post two and be ridden by Luis Saez.

Trained by D. Wayne Lukas, Secret Oath has earned more than $2.1 million in her career with more than $400,000 of it coming this year with a victory in the Azeri (G2) and a runner-up finish on April 15 to Clairiere in the Apple Blossom (G1) at Oaklawn Park. Tyler Gaffalione, who was aboard for the two starts in 2023, has the call Friday and will break from post position four.

Four other Grade 1 winners are in the field headed by defending La Troienne champion Pauline's Pearl. The others are A Mo Reay, Society, and Search Results.

Trained by Steve Asmussen, Pauline's Pearl returns to the races following an off-the-board finish in the Beholder Mile (G1) at Santa Anita on March 11. Joel Rosario has the mount and will break from post position nine.

Trained by Brad Cox, A Mo Reay comes into the La Troienne off a victory in the Beholder Mile (G1) at Santa Anita in March. Florent Geroux has the mount and will break from post position 10.

Turf Classic Entries

Prior to that, he won the Risen Star (G2). Flavien Prat, who won the 2019 Derby on Country House, has the mount and will exit post position 14.

Angel of Empire will be one of four starters for trainer Brad Cox, who has a Kentucky Derby victory by Mandaloun in 2021 on his resume. That win came via the disqualification of Medina's Spirit for a medication violation detected in a post-race test.

Cox's other entrants are Hit Show (30-1), Verifying (15-1), and Jace's Road (50-1).

Fourth choice on the line at 10-1 is Derma Sotogake (JPN).

Derma Sotogake comes to Kentucky off a 5 ½-length victory in the UAE Derby (G2). A winner of four of eight starts and earner of $1.1 million, Derma Sotogake will be ridden by Christophe Lemaire for trainer Hidetaka Otonashi from post 17.

Another trainer seeking to add to his Kentucky Derby win total is Bill Mott.

Mott, who won the Derby in 2019 with Country House via the disqualification of Maximum Security for interference, will send out Rocket Can (30-1). Fourth in the Arkansas Derby in his most recent start, Rocket Can will be ridden by Junior Alvarado from post position 18.

One other rider will be seeking another Derby victory: Joel Rosario. Rosario, who won the 2013 Derby on Orb, will ride Disarm (30-1). Trained by Steve Asmussen, Disarm was third in the Lexington (G3) in his most recent start. Disarm will start from post position 11.

Three horses have drawn into the field from the also-eligible list: Dale Romans trainee Cyclone Mischief (30-1); Japan's Mandarin Hero (20-1), the latter an impressive runner-up in the Santa Anita Derby; and Arkansas Derby runner-up King Russell (50-1), bred and owned in part by former Kentucky Gov. Brereton C. Jones.

Weekend Lineup Presented By Del Mar Ship & Win: Final Countdown

As the 3-year-olds make their final preparations for next weekend's Run for the Roses, there are five graded stakes races on offer this weekend across the United States.

Keeneland's meet closes out on Friday with the Grade 3 Bewitch the highlight, while Churchill's meet opens Saturday with the listed Roxelana.

The West Coast features all the graded action on Saturday and Sunday, both at Santa Anita Park and Golden Gate Fields. The G3 Providencia, G2 Santa Maria, and G3 Wilshire are the highlights at Santa Anita.

A field of nine has been assembled for the signature race of the Winter/Spring meet at Golden Gate Fields in Berkeley, Calif.: the Grade 3, $250,000 San Francisco Mile. For 3-year-olds and up at one mile on projected firm turf, the 'Mile is one of six stakes races on the Gold Rush Weekend Saturday, April 29 card at Golden Gate.

Live racing returns to Laurel Park on Saturday as well, including five stakes races, while a pair of stakes will be offered at Oaklawn Park.

Saturday

8:07 p.m. – Grade 2 Santa Maria Stakes at Santa Anita Park

Fresh off a sharp allowance score at one mile, Bob Baffert trainee Adare Manor heads a field of six older fillies and mares going a mile and one sixteenth in Saturday's Grade 2, $200,000 Santa Maria Stakes at Santa Anita. A gate to wire winner at odds of 1-2 on March 31, Adare Manor posted a solid 92 Beyer Speed Figure in what was her second start of the year. Idle prior to her 4-year-old debut here on Feb. 18, a seven furlong allowance in which she ran second at 4-5 she'll be making her 10th career start on Saturday.

Keith Abrahams' homebred Kirstenbosch, a game nose winner of the G3 La Canada Stakes three starts back on Jan. 15, will be handled for the fifth consecutive time by Kazushi Kimura, as he'll return from his base at Woodbine Racecourse in Toronto to ride here on Saturday. Trained by John Sadler, Kirstenbosch was most recently third, beaten one length in the G3 Monrovia at 6 ½ furlongs on dirt April 8 and she's well positioned to bring her best in the Santa Maria.

Although her resume is light in terms of graded stakes experience, Big Switch, most recently second, beaten a head by Adare Manor in a one mile allowance March 31, appears to be a solid fit in what will be her second graded stakes assignment. Big Switch is a two-time statebred stakes winner making her ninth career start at age four. By Mr. Big out of the Malibu Moon mare Two Faced Moon, Big Switch, who is unbeaten in two tries at a mile and one sixteenth, will once again be forwardly placed with Joe Bravo back aboard.

Santa Maria Entries

9:24 p.m. – Grade 3 San Francisco Mile Stakes at Golden Gate Fields

A field of nine has been assembled for the signature race of the Winter/Spring meet at Golden Gate Fields in Berkeley, Calif.: the Grade 3, $250,000 San Francisco Mile.

In search of his first San Francisco Mile win, trainer Phil D'Amato campaigns a legit contender in 4-year-old gelding Balnikhov, who was last seen finishing off the board in the Grade 1 Frank Kilroe Mile at Santa Anita in March. As a 3-year-old in 2022, Balnikhov won the Oceanside Stakes at Del Mar and the Grade 3 Bryan Station at Keeneland. He makes his second start of the year in the San Francisco Mile with Southern California based pilot Umberto Rispoli set to ride.

A second Southern California conditioner, George Papaprodromou, ships two horses for the 2023 'Mile. 7-year-old gelding Bob and Jackie is an old pro who finished third in the Grade 3 American earlier this month. His most significant win to date came in 2021 in the 9-furlong Grade 2 San Gabriel. Stablemate Flavius makes his first start off a year vacation. A multiple minor stakes winner, the War Front ridgling was last seen finishing off the board in the 2022 Frank Kilroe Mile. Jose Valdivia Jr. hops aboard Bob and Jackie while locally based rider Evin Roman is set to navigate Flavius.

The Leonard Powell trained Dicey Mo Chara came up a length short in the Grade 2 Charlie Whittingham on Santa Anita Derby Day and cuts back a quarter mile for this eight-furlong event. His last victory came three starts ago in the Grade 2 San Gabriel in December. Jockey Drayden Van Dyke has the call aboard the 5-year-old European bred gelding.

A handful of locals are game to challenge the out-of-town invaders. The Ed Moger Jr. conditioned Tarantino is multiple Grade 3 placed on dual surfaces and most recently finished as the runner up in a second level allowance at Santa Anita in March. Rio King was a runaway winner of a first level allowance at Golden Gate and takes a major class hike in the San Francisco Mile. Tesoro's last winners circle visit came one year ago on Gold Rush Weekend Saturday in a salty second level allowance. The same can be said for Il Bellator, though he won the California Derby against 3-year-olds on Gold Rush Weekend 2022. Tesoro makes his first start off a six-month layoff while Il Bellator makes his first afternoon appearance in over eight months.

San Francisco Mile Entries

Sunday

7:30 p.m. – Grade 3 Wilshire Stakes at Santa Anita Park

Irish-bred Quattroelle seeks her third graded stakes victory of the year as she heads a wide-open group of seven in the Grade 3, $100,000 Wilshire Stakes on Sunday at Santa Anita. Trained by Jeff Mullins, Quattroelle will again be ridden by Hector Berrios, who has patiently guided her to consecutive come-from-behind scores at one mile on grass in the G2 Buena Vista March 4 and the G3 Megahertz on Feb. 4. A 5-year-old mare, all five of Quattroelle's wins have come on the Santa Anita turf.

Idle since winning the G1 American Oaks at a mile and one quarter on turf her Dec. 26, Phil D'Amato's Irish-bred Rhea Moon, who rallied from off the pace to take the G3 Autumn Miss at one mile on turf two starts back on Oct. 29, will be after her fourth consecutive win as she steps up into older company on Sunday.

D'Amato is also well represented by Brazilian-bred Macadamia, who, in her first North American graded stakes assignment, finished a troubled second, beaten a half length by Quattroelle in the G2 Buena Vista on March 4 and will be ridden for the first time by Diego Herrera.

Fresh off the best race of her career, California-bred Closing Remarks is yet another distaffer who rates a huge chance in the Wilshire with regular rider Joe Bravo back aboard for Carla Gaines. A dazzling 1 ½ length winner of the G2 Royal Heroine at one mile on turf April 1, this 5-year-old Harris Farms homebred mare by Vronsky earned a career-top 92 Beyer as the 6-5 favorite.

A maiden $30,000 claiming winner going 7 ½ furlongs on turf four starts back at Turf Paradise on Dec. 19, Very Scary is a very legitimate threat on the lead or thereabouts for trainer Ian Kruljac. A 4-year-old filly by the Curlin stallion Connect, Very Scary, in her first stakes assignment, was most recently third, beaten 1 ¾ lengths by Closing Remarks in the Royal Heroine on April 1.

Weekend Lineup Presented By Del Mar Ship & Win: Tough Group Meets Up In Oaklawn Handicap

Despite winning both local prep races for the Oaklawn Handicap, D. Wayne Lukas trainee is just fourth choice on the morning line for Saturday's Grade 2, $1 million contest in Hot Springs, Ark. He'll face four other millionaires in the 1 1/8-mile test, including program favorite Charge It who adds blinkers for Todd Pletcher.

There are also potentially future Triple Crown implications on the line in Oaklawn's Bath House Row Stakes, which offers the winner a berth in the Preakness Stakes.

Keeneland's G2 Elkhorn on Saturday ought to be a fun race to watch, with 9-year-old veterans Channel Maker and Red Knight facing eight younger rivals in the 1 1/2-mile turf marathon. Channel Maker, voted 2020 Champion Male Turf Horse, won the Elkhorn last year but is third choice on the morning line behind Mike Maker trainees Red Knight and Value Engineering.

Santa Anita resumes live racing for its first-ever Hollywood meet on Friday, and offers a 1 1/8-mile older horse dirt test on Saturday in the G2 Californian. Bob Baffert trainee Defunded is the headliner in that event.

Also opening this weekend is live racing at Woodbine, with nine races Saturday, while racing at Laurel Park has been canceled until further notice.

This weekend's steeplechase action features a Grade 2 highlight at Middleburg, the Temple Gwathmey Hurdle featuring multiple Grade 1 winner Snap Decision.

The live Thoroughbred racing season breaks from the gate at Finger Lakes Gaming & Racetrack (FLGR) this upcoming Monday, April 24.

Saturday

4:44 p.m. – Grade 2 Elkhorn Stakes at Keeneland

Defending champion Channel Maker, who won the 2020 Eclipse Award as North America's champion turf male, headlines a field of 10 4-year-olds and up entered for Saturday's 38th running of the $350,000 Elkhorn (G2) going 1½ miles on the turf.

Trained by Bill Mott, the 9-year-old Channel Maker will attempt to become the fourth horse to win the Elkhorn in consecutive years. The others were Musketier (GER) in 2010 and 2011, Kim Loves Bucky in 2002 and 2003 and the Mott-trained African Dancer in 1998 and 1999.

Seventh in the W.L. McKnight (G3) in his 2023 debut, Channel Maker will be ridden Saturday by John Velazquez and break from post position one.

Red Knight, who won the W.L. McKnight in his most recent start, will be one of two entries in the Elkhorn for four-time race winner Mike Maker. Red Knight, who won the 2020 Sycamore (G3) here in the fall of 2020, will be ridden by Gerardo Corrales and break from post five.

Maker, who won the Elkhorn with Dark Cove (2013), Da Big Hoss (2016), Bigger Picture (2019) and Zulu Alpha (2020), also will send out Value Engineering. Winner of the Mac Diarmida (G2) in his most recent start after a runner-up finish in the McKnight, Value Engineering will break from post two under Tyler Gaffalione.

Elkhorn Entries

6:06 p.m. – Grade 2 Oaklawn Handicap at Oaklawn Park

Last Samurai can become just the third horse to sweep Oaklawn's three most lucrative two-turn races for older horses in the same year with a victory in Saturday's $1 million Oaklawn Handicap (G2) at 1 1/8 miles.

Last Samurai won the 2022 Oaklawn Handicap (G2) for trainer Dallas Stewart and now-deceased Arkansas owner Willis Horton. Returning to Hot Springs late last year with Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas, Last Samurai has made three starts at the 2022-2023 Oaklawn meeting, finishing second, beaten a neck, in the $200,000 Tinsel Stakes at 1 1/8 miles Dec. 17 and winning the $600,000 Razorback Handicap (G3) at 1 1/16 miles Feb. 18 and the $500,000 Essex Handicap (G3) at 1 1/16 miles March 18.

In addition to Last Samurai, Saturday's field also has four other millionaires (Rated R Superstar, Stilleto Boy, Proxy and Classic Causeway) and three Grade 1 winners (Stilleto Boy, Proxy and Classic Causeway) entered.

Program favorite Charge It adds blinkers for Hall of Fame trainer Todd Pletcher, who won the Oaklawn Handicap in 2007 with Lawyer Ron and again in 2015 with Race Day. The speedy Charge It finished second in the $1 million Florida Derby (G1) at 1 1/8 miles last April at Gulfstream Park and completed an abbreviated 2022 campaign (foot issue) with a 23-length victory in the $250,000 Dwyer Stakes (G3) for 3-year-olds at 1 mile July 2 at Belmont Park. He also ran 17th in the Kentucky Derby, just his fourth career start.

Charge It, as the odds-on favorite, exits a runner-up finish in the $200,000 Gulfstream Park Mile (G2) March 4 at Gulfstream Park.

Oaklawn Handicap Entries

8:00 p.m. – Grade 2 Californian at Santa Anita Park

A close third as the favorite in the Grade 1 Santa Anita Handicap March 4 and second in the G1 Pegasus World Cup Invitational at Gulfstream Park on Jan. 28, Bob Baffert's Defunded heads a field of six older horses going a mile and one eighth in Saturday's Grade 2, $200,000 Californian Stakes at Santa Anita.

A 5-year-old gelding by Dialed In, Defunded, who showed the way to deep stretch when ridden by Juan Hernandez in the Big 'Cap, was beaten three quarters of a length. With Hernandez back aboard on Saturday, Defunded will be seeking his third graded stakes victory in what will be his 16th career start.

Trainer Craig Dollase's Midnight Mammoth, a freakish gate to wire winner of a second condition allowance going a mile and one sixteenth here on March 19, could duke it out early on the lead with the top choice if jockey Kyle Frey seeks to once again employ front-running tactics. A 5 ¼ length winner at 11-1, Midnight Mammoth, who was claimed for $50,000 by owner Jeffrey Sengara on March 3, earned a career-best 90 Beyer Speed Figure first off the claim and will hope to improve upon that in the Californian.

Most recently well beaten on turf in the G1 Frank E. Kilroe Mile March 4, Brazilian-bred Royal Ship will be making his second start off a layoff for Richard Mandella as he tries to reverse a skein of three double digit defeats—in the Kilroe, the G1 Awesome Again and three starts back, in the G1 Pacific Classic Sept. 3 at Del Mar.

Weekend Lineup Presented By Del Mar Ship & Win: Keeneland Rolls Out Grade 1 Green Carpet

While Keeneland's opening weekend featured major prep races for the Kentucky Oaks and Kentucky Derby, week two at the Lexington, Ky., track's spring meet rolls out the  green carpet for a pair of Grade 1 grass stakes for older runners – Friday's main event, the Maker's Mark Mile attracted eight colts and geldings, while Saturday features nine fillies and mares going 1 1/16 miles in the Jenny Wiley Stakes.

Saturday is also last call for Kentucky Derby points, with 40 points up for grabs in Keeneland's G3 Stonestreet Lexington Stakes on a 20-8-6-4-2 basis to the top five finishers. Winchell Thoroughbreds' Disarm, one of the 11 3-year-olds entered, needs a top three finish to move into the Kentucky Derby field.

There is one other race on Saturday with Triple Crown implications. The Federico Tesio at Laurel Park is billed as a “Win Today, See You In May” automatic entry for Triple Crown nominees into the G1 Preakness Stakes – middle Jewel of the Triple Crown – on May 20.

Oaklawn's 12-race program on Saturday has two graded stakes – the G3 Count Fleet Sprint Handicap matching 10 veteran speedsters going six furlongs, and the G1 Apple Blossom Handicap, where Clairiere will attempt to turn the tables on Secret Oath, winner of the G2 Azeri Stakes at the Arkansas track last month.

Friday

5:16 p.m. – Grade 1 Maker's Mark Mile at Keeneland

All eyes will be on Godolphin's Irish-bred Modern Games, who has made three trips to North America for trainer Charles Appleby and come away with three G1 victories and an Eclipse Award as champion turf male of 2022. Installed the 3-5 morning line favorite, the 4-year-old Dubawi colt has not raced since winning the G1 Breeders' Cup Mile last Nov. 5 over the same Keeneland grass course.

There are two other G1 winners in the field. Graham Motion-trained Speaking Scout won the G1 Hollywood Derby at Del Mar last December for Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners and the Mr Speaker gelding acquitted himself nicely with a third-place finish at 24-1 odds behind Atone in the G1 Pegasus World Cup Turf Invitational at Gulfstream Park Jan. 28. Brazilian-bred In Love has two wins over the Keeneland turf for Bonne Chance Farm and Stud RDI, including a victory in the G1 Keeneland Turf Mile during the 2021 fall meet.

Maker's Mark Mile Entries

Saturday

5:16 p.m. – Grade 3 Stonestreet Lexington Stakes at Keeneland

Steve Asmussen-trained Disarm didn't have the best of luck when having to await racing room on the turn for home in the G2 Louisiana Derby, and by then front-running Kingsbarns was home free. The Gun Runner colt doesn't need a win to get enough points to squeak into the Derby field, and he appears to be rounding into good form after two starts off a layoff. Godolphin's First Mission is only a maiden winner last out but the Street Sense colt ran fast for Brad Cox and could be dangerous.

Stonestreet Lexington Entries

5:48 p.m. – Grade 1 Jenny Wiley Stakes at Keeneland

Trainer Chad Brown and owner Peter Brant won this race last year with Regal Glory – Brown's fourth win in the race in five years and fifth overall – and they have two entrants in this year's renewal, including 7-5 morning line favorite In Italian. A 5-year-old Dubawi mare, In Italian enters off a five-month layoff following a pair of strong efforts at Keeneland last fall – winning the G1 First Lady wire to wire and finishing second in the G1 Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf, when the 1 3/16 miles may have been a tad long for her.

Don't overlook Queen Goddess, who won the G3 Pegasus World Cup Filly & Mare Turf in January for Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners and Gary Barber. Trained by Michael McCarthy, she's done most of her racing in California, winning three graded stakes, including the G1 American Oaks after it was transferred from turf to the main track.

Jenny Wiley Entries

5:58 p.m. – Grade 3 Count Fleet Sprint Handicap at Oaklawn

A quick perusal of the past performances suggests there is a ton of early speed in the lineup for this six-furlong fixture, which should set things up for a closer. But which closer?

Tejano Twist, owned by JD Thoroughbreds and Joey Keith Davis, rallied from far back to win the G3 Whitmore Stakes last out at Oaklawn when Chris Hartman stablemate Edge to Edge insured a pace duel. The latter is back again today and will be hustling early, giving Tejano Twist the conditions he needs for his best effort.

Tom Kagele's Radical Right is another late runner. Formerly based in the Mid-Atlantic and trained by Dale Capuano, the First Samurai gelding is now trained in California by Peter Miller, whose best successes have come with sprinters.

7:12 p.m. – Grade 1 Apple Blossom Handicap at Oaklawn

Briland Farm's Secret Oath appeared to benefit from a brief freshening following a nine-race 3-year-old campaign in 2022 that ended with a fifth-place finish in the G1 Breeders' Cup Distaff. The G1 Kentucky Oaks winner has an exceptional record at Oaklawn, winning four of five starts – her only defeat coming against colts when third in the G1 Arkansas Derby. The Arrogate filly has been installed the 4-5 morning line favorite here.

Clairiere chased Secret Oath home after having some traffic problems on the turn for home in the Azeri and Stonestreet Stables' Curlin mare almost always brings her “A” game. She finished second to Letruska in last year's Apple Blossom, her only other start at the Hot Springs track. Only four were entered, but this year's edition of the Apple Blossom almost has the feel of a match race – unless Alex and JoAnn Lieblong's Hot and Sultry manages to steal away to an easy lead and just keeps on going.
