Weekend Lineup Presented By Monmouth Park: Ellis Park Hosts First Stephen Foster

The holiday weekend kicks off with a hefty pile of graded stakes races on a solid Saturday of racing, including good cards from both Ellis Park and Woodbine Racetrack.

Following the shift of the remainder of Churchill Downs' Sprint Meet to Ellis Park, the Henderson, Ky. track will host its first Grade 1 race this Saturday in the Stephen Foster. The “Win and You're In” contest for the Breeders' Cup Classic drew a field of eight, topped by a pair of Ken McPeek-trained stablemates in Smile Happy and Rattle N Roll. Two other Grade 1 winners are in the field – Proxy and Stilleto Boy – as well as Grade 2 winners West Will Power and Last Samurai.

The Stephen Foster leads a card with five other stakes, including the G2 Wise Dan and G2 Fleur de Lis. On Sunday, Ellis Park plans to host three additional listed stakes races, including a pair of 2-year-old contests.

Woodbine's Saturday card celebrates Canada Day, and includes five graded stakes. Last year's juvenile champion filly Wonder Wheel will try to get back on track in the G3 Selene, while Canada's reining Horse of the Year headlines the G2 Nassau.

Belmont Park also features a pair of graded stakes on Saturday, the G2 John A. Nerud for older sprinters and the G3 Dwyer for 3-year-old milers. Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott sends out Nerud favorite Candy Man Rocket against a field of six rivals.

Delaware Park has carded two Grade 3 stakes races for Saturday, as well: the G3 Delaware Oaks and the G3 Robert G. Dick Memorial.

Gulfstream's Grade 3 Smile Sprint features an intriguing newcomer to the graded ranks in Chilean-bred Todo Fino, an 11-time winner from 16 career starts, including two allowance races in the U.S. last fall.

Listed stakes action will be on offer with a trio at Laurel Park, five at Lone Star, and one at Monmouth Park.

Saturday

4:00 p.m. – Grade 3 Delaware Oaks at Delaware Park

Miracle tops a field of ten entered in the $300,000, Grade 3 Delaware Oaks this Saturday. The New York-bred daughter of Mendelssohn travels well: from her seven career starts, she has only been out of the money once while racing over five different tracks.  Trained by Todd Pletcher, she has a win, four seconds, and a third with earnings of $229,675.

Miracle has made three starts in 2023. On Feb. 18, she ran second in the 1 1/16-mile Grade 2 Rachel Alexandra at the Fair Grounds, then followed with a fifth in the Grade 2 Gulfstream Park Oaks on April 1. In her most recent out, she ran second in the New York state-bred Bouwerie Stakes at Belmont Park on May 29. Miracle will be ridden by Trevor McCarthy, who won the Delaware Oaks in 2014 with Fortune Pearl.

Cover the Spread and Cats Inthe Timber will be representing the home team. Both are conditioned by Brittany Russell, the current leading trainer at Delaware Park with a record of nine wins, eight seconds, and six thirds from 29 starts.

That victory followed up consecutive triumphs Bayakoa (G3) in February at Oaklawn Park and Pago Hop Dec. 31 at Fair Grounds. Overall, A Mo Reay sports a solid record of 13-5-1-3 with $728,275 in purse earnings. Jockey Flavien Prat will have the mount from post No. 6.

Set Piece was victorious two years ago in the $400,000 Wise Dan Stakes (G2) at Churchill Downs and will attempt for a second score in Saturday's 34th edition of the 1 1/16-mile turf contest at Ellis Park.

Set Piece, trained by Brad Cox, arrived stateside in 2020 and has since been victorious in seven stakes contests including the 2021 Wise Dan. Set Piece's 2023 campaign began on May 4 at Churchill Downs when he finished third in the Opening Verse (Listed). One month later he returned in the $225,000 Arlington Stakes (G3) at the Louisville oval where he rallied from six lengths off the pace to beat Get Smokin by one length. Jockey Florent Geroux, who has ridden Set Piece in 14 of his 27 lifetime starts, will have the return call in the Wise Dan and break from post No. 8.

Get Smokin will attempt to avenge his Arlington defeat in the Wise Dan. Owned by Ironhorse Racing Stable, BlackRidge Stables, T-N-T Equine Holdings and Saratoga Seven Racing Partners, Six-year-old Get Smokin is a multiple graded stakes winner for trainer Mark Casse. Among the accolades on Get Smokin's resume includes victories in the Hill Prince (G2) and Tampa Bay Stakes (G3). Get Smokin will be ridden by Ricardo Santana Jr. from post 4.

Trained by Larry Rivelli, the bay returns to the Toronto oval for the Highlander a graded stakes winner after taking the $600,000 Franklin-Simpson (G2T) last September at Kentucky Downs. One Timer returned to action on June 1 and notched a 4 ¼-length triumph over five furlongs on the Belterra Park turf.

Highlander Entries

5:19 p.m. – Grade 2 John A. Nerud Stakes at Belmont Park

Dual graded-stakes winner Candy Man Rocket will look to double up on stakes scores in Saturday's Grade 2, $250,000 John A. Nerud, a seven-furlong main-track sprint for older horses. Trained by Hall of Famer Bill Mott, the 5-year-old Candy Ride horse garnered a career-best 97 Beyer Speed Figure last out with a stalking score in the six-furlong Grade 3 Runhappy on May 13 at Belmont.

Pennsylvania-bred Twisted Ride [post 4, Andy Hernandez] picked up graded black type for the first time last out in the Runhappy. Trained by Michael Moore, the 4-year-old Great Notion gelding dueled for the lead with mutuel favorite Beren through sharp splits of 22.60 seconds and 45.15, staying on strong to complete the exacta behind Candy Man Rocket while Beren faded to fourth.

Graded-stakes winner Little Vic [post 5, Carlos Olivero] will make his first start since finishing a troubled last-of-6 in the Grade 1 Carter Handicap on April 8 at Aqueduct Racetrack. The 4-year-old Practical Joke colt earned a career-best 102 Beyer for his 1 1/2-length score in the Grade 3 Tom Fool Handicap in March at the Big A, but he was reported to have bled in the Carter where he attended a rapid early pace before fading. Trained by Juan Carlos Avila for Victoria's Ranch, Little Vic boasts a record of 14-5-3-1 for purse earnings of $327,730.

Ontario-homebred Weyburn [post 3, Jose Ortiz] will make his first start for Hall of Fame trainer Todd Pletcher. The 5-year-old Pioneerof the Nile horse spent 11-of-16 career starts in the care of conditioner James Jerkens, who now trains in Saudi Arabia for Prince Faisal bin Khalid Al Saud. He was last seen finishing a distant third in the Grade 3 Westchester here on May 5, landing six lengths back of the victorious Repo Rocks while registering a 100 Beyer.

Multiple graded stakes-placed Three Technique [post 2, Javier Castellano] finished a close third in the 2021 John A. Nerud when in the barn of conditioner Jeremiah Englehart. The 6-year-old Mr Speaker horse was haltered by his current trainer, Jason Cook, for $40,000 that November from a runner-up effort in a Churchill Downs sprint. He captured the restricted Knicks Go last May traveling one-mile at Churchill Downs and finished a closing third in his title defense two starts back. Last out, he notched a head score in an optional-claiming mile on May 27 at Churchill Downs.

Nerud Entries

5:26 p.m. – Grade 1 Stephen Foster Stakes at Ellis Park

Multiple graded stakes-winning colt Smile Happy headlines an accomplished field of eight older horses entered for next Saturday's 42nd running of the $1-million Stephen Foster (G1) at Ellis Park.

Smile Happy won his second career Grade 2 contest on Kentucky Oaks Day May 5 at Churchill Downs when he powered home to a two-length score in the Alysheba. As a 2-year-old, Smile Happy was victorious in the Kentucky Jockey Club (G2) before he tested the Road to the Kentucky Derby. The son of Runhappy qualified for last year's Kentucky Derby (G1) but finished eighth behind Rich Strike. Trained by Kenny McPeek, Smile Happy's 4-year-old record includes an allowance victory and a third-place finish in the Oaklawn Mile (G3). Jockey Corey Lanerie will have the mount aboard Smile Happy in the Stephen Foster and the duo will break from post No. 5.

Another top entrant in the Stephen Foster is Smile Happy's stablemate Rattle N Roll. Rattle N Roll won the $225,000 Blame Stakes (G3) in his most recent start. Prior to his 1 ¼-length score in the Blame, Rattle N Roll was victorious in the Pimlico Special (G3) and Ben Ali Stakes (G3). Jockey Brian Hernandez Jr., who has been aboard both Smile Happy and Rattle N Roll in their most recent starts, will have the mount from post 4.

Grade 1 winner Proxy will ship in to Ellis Park for the Stephen Foster. Trained by Mike Stidham, Proxy narrowly got by Last Samurai to win the Oaklawn Handicap (G2) in late April. Among Proxy's other accolades in his career includes a three-quarters of a length win in last fall's Clark Stakes (G1) at Churchill Downs. The well-traveled Proxy has five career wins from 16 starts and has banked earnings of $1,775,970. Joel Rosario will ride Proxy and break from the rail.

Steve Moger's Stilleto Boy achieved Grade 1 glory two starts ago in the Santa Anita Handicap (G1). The speedy son of Shackleford is based in California for trianer Ed Moger Jr. but has traveled to tracks throughout the country including Oaklawn, Prairie Meadows, and Gulfstream Park. Stilleto Boy was the pacesetter in the Oaklawn Handicap but could not hold off Proxy and Last Samurai. Among the other notable victories in Stilleto Boy's include the 2021 Iowa Derby and the 2022 California Stakes (G2). Hall of Fame rider Kent Desormeaux will make the journey from California to Henderson for the mount and break from post 2.

Another horse that could show speed in the Stephen Foster is West Will Power. Trained by Brad Cox, West Will Power dueled on the lead in the Alysheba but gave way late to Smile Happy. Prior to the Alysheba, West Will Power dominated six rivals by 4¾ lengths in the New Orleans Classic (G2) at Fair Grounds. Jockey Flavien Prat will ride the six-time winner from post 6.

Stephen Foster Entries

6:05 p.m. – Grade 2 Nassau Stakes at Woodbine

Moira, Canada's reigning Horse of the Year, will make the second start of her 4-year-old campaign in the Nassau. Trained by Kevin Attard, the daughter of Ghostzapper, who also earned champion 3-year-old filly at the Sovereign Awards ceremony earlier this year, finished second in the Belle Mahone (G3), a neck behind Super Hoity Toity in the 1 1/16-mile main track race.

This will be Moira's third try on the grass. She finished second but was demoted to eighth in last year's E.P. Taylor Stakes (G1T) and was fifth in the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf (G1T) at Keeneland on November 5.

Other starters include multiple graded stakes placed Eminent Victor, graded stakes winner Fev Rover (IRE), multiple graded stakes placed Scotish Star (ARG), graded stakes placed Millie Girl, and graded stakes placed Sweet Enough (GB).

Weekend Lineup Presented By Monmouth Park: Derby Runner-Up Star Of The Show In Ohio

The final day of the highly-anticipated five-day Royal Ascot meeting is scheduled for this Saturday, highlighting this weekend's racing calendar. A truly international field will line up for the day's feature race, the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes, led by Hong Kong's top sprinter Wellington.

Stateside, the weekend's top event is likely the Grade 3, $500,000 Ohio Derby, featuring the brave Kentucky Derby runner-up Two Phil's. He'll have a new jockey in the irons, Gerardo Corrales, following the injury to regular rider Jareth Loveberry, but the Larry Rivelli trainee is easily the 8-5 morning line favorite in the field of eight 3-year-olds.

The G3 Chicago Stakes is the other graded race on offer this weekend, to be held at Ellis Park. Dual Grade 1 winner Matareya is the favorite in the field of six, though she'll face a challenge from another Grade 1 winner in Society.

Other stakes action on Saturday includes: Wild Applause at Belmont, Carry Back at Gulfstream, Bertrando at Los Alamitos, four stakes at Lone Star, Goldwood at Monmouth, three undercard stakes at Thistledown, and the Ballade at Woodbine.

A pair of Breeders' Cup Challenge races offer “Win and You're In” berths on Sunday. The winner of the Takarazuka Kinen (G1) at 1 3/8 miles on turf, led by the world's top-ranked racehorse Equinox, at Hanshin Racecourse in Japan, will gain a free berth into the $4 million Longines Breeders' Cup Turf (G1). The winner of the Gran Premio Pamplona (G1) at 1 1 /4 miles on turf, for fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up at Hipodromo De Monterrico in Lima, Peru, will earn an automatic starting position into the $2 million Maker's Mark Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf (G1), which will be run at 1 ¼ miles.

Saturday

10:40 a.m. – Group 1 Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot

A glittering international field with contenders from Australia, Hong Kong, France and Ireland has assembled for the first running of the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes, renamed in memory of the late monarch.

Englishman Richard Gibson has made the journey from Hong Kong with one of their top sprinters Wellington, twice a winner of the Group 1 Chairman's Sprint and, last December, winner of the Longines Hong Kong Sprint under Ryan Moore on the turf at Sha Tin.

Ralph Beckett trainee Kinross is another class performer, who has travelled the world and was unlucky not to win the Breeders' Cup Mile when third behind Modern Games after being put on the back foot by early scrimmaging.

Mauricio Delcher Sanchez won the Jubilee with Equiano in 2008 when he was champion trainer in Spain, but now based in Chantilly, he makes the shorter trip with Coeur de Pierre, third to The Platinum Queen in the Prix de l'Abbaye at ParisLongchamp last October.

Many of last year's field are back for another crack with Australian sprinter Artorius having got closest to the Godolphin pair Naval Crown and Creative Force in dead-heating for third under Jamie Spencer.

Highfield Princess and Cannonball, second and last respectively in Tuesday's King's Stand, also feature in the field of 16.

QEII Jubilee Entries

4:55 p.m. – Grade 3 Chicago Stakes at Ellis Park

Godolphin's Derby City Distaff (G1) winner Matareya headlines a field of six fillies and mares entered for the $225,000 Chicago Stakes.

Matareya, a 4-year-old daughter of Pioneerof the Nile trained by Brad Cox, is a two-time Grade 1-winning sprinter. Prior to her top-level victory in the Derby City Distaff, Matareya won last year's Acorn Stakes (G1) as a 3-year-old. Matareya has one prior start at Ellis Park when she broke her maiden as a 2-year-old by 4½ lengths. Jockey Flavien Prat, who has been aboard Matareya for her last six starts, will be in the saddle from post No. 2.

Another Grade 1 winner that entered the Chicago Stakes is Peter Blum Thoroughbreds' Society. Trained by Hall of Famer Steve Asmussen, Society won last year's Cotillion Stakes (G1) at Parx. In her most recent start, the 4-year-old Gun Runner filly faded to ninth in the 1 1/16-mile La Troienne Stakes (G1) but will cut back in distance in the Chicago Stakes with Tyler Gaffalione in the saddle from post 5.

Chicago Entries

6:20 p.m. – Grade 3 Ohio Derby at Thistledown

Trainer Larry Rivelli has confidence in his Kentucky Derby runner-up Two Phil's ahead of this Saturday's $500,000 Ohio Derby, despite the late rider change. The 3-year-old son of Hard Spun drew post four in the field of eight runners entered for the 1 1/8-mile contest.

Second choice at 3-1 goes to the Brad Cox-trained Bishops Bay, last-out second in the G3 Peter Pan to eventual Belmont Stakes winner Arcangelo. Florent Geroux ships in to ride the son of Uncle Mo.

Scratched from the Kentucky Derby after his trainer Saffie Joseph sent out a pair of unexplained sudden deaths earlier in the week, Lord Miles has not raced since winning the G2 Wood Memorial on April 8, 2023. The son of Curlin is the third choice on the morning line at 7-2 in the Ohio Derby, and will be piloted by Edgard Zayas.

Third in the G3 Peter Pan, the Doug O'Neill-trained Henry Q is the fourth choice at 5-1 on the morning line for Saturday's Ohio Derby. He will be ridden by Kendrick Carmouche.

Reigning Champion Female Sprinter Goodnight Olive headlines a talented field of older fillies and mares in Saturday's Grade 2, $200,000 Bed o' Roses, a seven-furlong main-track sprint. Trained by four-time Eclipse Award-winner Chad Brown, the 5-year-old Ghostzapper mare was a perfect 4-for-4 last year, taking a pair of seven-furlong Grade 1s in the Ballerina Handicap at Saratoga Race Course and the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint at Keeneland on her way to Championship honors.

Goodnight Olive made her seasonal debut a winning one in the seven-furlong Grade 1 Madison on April 8 at Keeneland, but endured a troubled trip last out on May 6 at Churchill Downs in the Grade 1 Derby City Distaff when she lacked racing room while boxed in along the rail by returning rival Wicked Halo

Wicked Halo [post 3, Jose Ortiz] boasts a record of 13-7-1-4 for purse earnings in excess of $1.1 million. The 4-year-old Gun Runner grey, trained by Hall of Famer Steve Asmussen, won 4-of-8 starts last year, capturing the Grade 2 Prioress at Saratoga and the Grade 2 Raven Run at Keeneland en route to a closing third-place finish in the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint.

Weekend Lineup Presented By Del Mar Ship & Win: Bright Skies Ahead For Belmont Stakes

Following significant improvement in air quality conditions throughout New York State, live racing will resume at Belmont Park Friday. The 11-race card, highlighted by five graded stakes, raises the curtain on the 2023 Belmont Stakes Racing Festival after poor air quality forced the cancelation of Thursday's twilight racing program and the closure of Belmont and Saratoga Race Course for training.

Live racing also resumes Friday at Woodbine and Laurel Park, also affected by poor air quality earlier this week.

On Saturday, a competitive nine-horse field that includes 2022 Champion 2-Year-Old Colt Forte, Grade 1 Preakness Stakes winner National Treasure and three Grade 1 Kentucky Derby alumni comprises the 155th running of the Grade 1, $1.5 million Belmont Stakes.

The Belmont Stakes is one of six Grade 1 events carded for Saturday as part of a 13-race card. The blockbuster Saturday program also features three Breeders' Cup “Win And You're In” qualifying events, including the $500,000 Ogden Phipps [Distaff], $400,000 Jaipur [Turf Sprint], and $1 million Hill 'n' Dale Metropolitan Handicap [Dirt Mile].

In the latter, fan-favorite Cody's Wish will look to build upon an already memorable list of achievements for Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott. The “Met Mile,” carded as Race 10, features five Grade 1 winners and awards the winner with a berth to the Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile in November at Santa Anita Park.

Other big runners expected to race this weekend at Belmont Park include:

  • Kentucky Oaks winner Pretty Mischievous in the G1 Acorn
  • Reigning champion sprinter Elite Power in the G2 True North
  • Top distaffers Clairiere and Secret Oath face off in the G1 Ogden Phipps
  • Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint winner Caravel takes on males in the G1 Jaipur

Also this weekend, Churchill Downs' Spring Meet continues at Ellis Park in Henderson, Ky., beginning on Saturday. Sunday's Ellis card is highlighted by the $400,000 Matt Winn (G3), featuring a handful of Kentucky Derby alumni including fourth-place finisher Disarm.

Friday

2:28 p.m. – Grade 1 Just A Game at Belmont Park

After saddling five winners in the race's previous six editions, Brown will send out Peter Brant's In Italian and Speak of the Devil in the one-mile Widener turf contest.

Four-time graded stakes-winner In Italian, who commenced her 5-year-old campaign the same way she tore through her 2022 year by posting a three-length victory in the G1 Jenny Wiley, has registered triple-digit Beyer Speed Figures in four consecutive starts.

Speak of the Devil ran fourth in last year's running of the Just A Game. The French-bred mare did not race again in 2022, but started her 6-year-old year with a fifth-place effort in the G3 Honey Fox in March at Gulfstream Park before earning black type with a third-place finish in the G2 Churchill Distaff Turf Mile in May.

Just A Game Entries

4:41 p.m. – Grade 1 New York Stakes at Belmont Park

War Like Goddess, a force in America's filly and mare turf division over the previous two seasons, will seek her third Grade 1 victory in Friday's 10-furlong inner turf test for older fillies and mares.

Trained by Hall of Famer Bill Mott, War Like Goddess exits a 1 1/2-length successful seasonal bow in the Grade 3 Bewitch on April 28 at Keeneland, her third consecutive win in that fixture and a continuation of strong 2022 form that she capped with a win in the Grade 1 Joe Hirsch Turf Classic Invitational and a third in the Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Turf – both against males.

Chad Brown, who has won the New York four of the past seven years, including with Bleecker Street in 2022, enters a capable quartet: McKulick, Marketsegmentation, Virginia Joy, and Shantisara.

Godolphin will be represented by the well-traveled With The Moonlight [post 8, William Buick], who is no stranger to these shores, having won last summer's Grade 3 Saratoga Oaks Invitational over 1 3/16 miles.A dual Group 2 winner in Dubai to commence 2023, the Charlie Appleby trainee enters off a pair of losses, including a second in the Grade 1 Jenny Wiley at Keeneland and a sixth in the Group 2 Dahlia at Newmarket over soft going.

New York Entries

5:14 p.m. – Grade 1 Acorn Stakes at Belmont Park

Kentucky Oaks winner Pretty Mischievous stands tall amongst her seven rivals as the lone Grade 1 winner in the field with field-best earnings of $1,206,560. Trained by Brendan Walsh, the Into Mischief filly backs up to one turn for this 1 1/16-mile contest for 3-year-old fillies.

Fellow Kentucky Oaks alumnus Dorth Vader [post 1, John Velazquez] makes her first outing since finishing fifth on the First Friday in May, as well as her first start for conditioner George Weaver after making her first nine appearances for Michael “Bo” Yates.

Trainer Chad Brown saddles three contenders in graded stakes-placed Accede [post 8, Flavien Prat]; stakes-winner Occult [post 4, Jose Ortiz]; and maiden winner Randomized [post 2, Manny Franco].

Hall of Fame trainer Todd Pletcher will have two chances to win his fourth Acorn as he sends out the speedy stakes-winner Munnys Gold [post 5, Irad Ortiz, Jr.] and two-time winner Frosty O Toole [post 3, Luis Saez].

Acorn Entries

Saturday

3:02 p.m. – Grade 1 Ogden Phipps Stakes at Belmont Park

Three-time Grade 1 winner Clairiere will face last year's Grade 1 Kentucky Oaks winner Secret Oath for the third time this season when seeking a repeat conquest of the Grade 1, $500,000 Ogden Phipps.

Now a 5-year-old, Steve Asmussen trainee Clairiere is poised for another high-caliber season, which she kicked off with a runner-up effort to Secret Oath in the Grade 2 Azeri on March 11 at Oaklawn Park. She then turned the tables on Secret Oath in Oaklawn Park's Grade 1 Apple Blossom Handicap on April 15, furiously mowing down the 2022 Kentucky Oaks winner in deep stretch to win by a neck.

After handing Clariere a 2 3/4-length defeat in the Azeri, Secret Oath appeared poised for victory in the upper stretch of the Apple Blossom under Tyler Gaffalione, but was thwarted by her rival in the final furlong. A daughter of Arrogate trained by D. Wayne Lukas, she enters the Ogden Phipps off another neck defeat when second to returning rival Played Hard in the Grade 1 La Troienne on May 6 at Churchill Downs.

Chad Brown-trained Search Results [post 2, Flavien Prat] will make her third straight appearance in a Grade 1 on the Belmont Stakes undercard. The dark bay 5-year-old Into Mischief mare finished third in last year's Ogden Phipps and will be in pursuit of her first Grade 1 victory since capturing the 2021 Acorn here on Belmont Stakes Day. She has finished at least third in 12-of-13 lifetime starts, only missing the board in last year's Breeders' Cup Distaff when sixth beaten 10 lengths.

Ogden Phipps Entries

3:42 p.m. – Grade 1 Woody Stephens Stakes at Belmont Park

General Jim will look to win his third straight graded stakes in Saturday's Grade 1, $400,000 Woody Stephens, a seven-furlong sprint for sophomores at Belmont Park.

Trained by Hall of Famer Shug McGaughey, the Into Mischief colt made the grade in February in the seven-furlong Grade 3 Swale at Gulfstream Park, posting a one-length score over next-out stakes winner Super Chow. General Jim followed last out with a gutsy neck score over returning rival Fort Bragg in a frantic finish in the Grade 2 Pat Day Mile on the Kentucky Derby undercard at Churchill Downs.

Trainer Bob Baffert, a two-time Woody Stephens winner, will saddle a pair of contenders in Fort Bragg [post 8, Joel Rosario] and Arabian Lion [post 3, John Velazquez].

Drew's Gold [post 13, Jose Gomez] is undefeated in four starts and will make his graded debut for trainer James Chapman, who co-owns the $25,000 Keeneland September Yearling Sale purchase in partnership with Stuart Tsujimoto.

Woody Stephens Entries

4:19 p.m. – Grade 1 Jaipur Stakes at Belmont Park

Reigning Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint winner Caravel will again face males as part of an overflow field for the six-furlong Widener turf sprint. Caravel has returned in fine form this year with a pair of 5 1/2-furlong turf sprint wins in Kentucky, taking the Grade 2 Shakertown against males in April at Keeneland and the Unbridled Sidney on Kentucky Oaks Day at Churchill Downs. She was re-routed to the Jaipur after initially being considered for the Group 1 King's Stand on June 20 at Ascot.

Casa Creed [post 11, Luis Saez] has won the last two runnings of this event for Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott. Casa Creed traveled to Saudi Arabia for his seasonal debut and lost a heartbreaker in the Group 3 1351 Turf Sprint when a head back of Bathrat Leon. That effort nearly replicated his narrow defeat in that same event last year when a neck in arrears of the supremely talented Songline, who successfully defended the Grade 1 Yasuda Kinen on Sunday in Tokyo.

5:04 p.m. – Grade 1 Met Mile at Belmont Park

Cody's Wish has more than proved worthy of his name, entering the Met Mile on a five-race win streak that includes three consecutive Grade 1 victories at three different racetracks. The Bill Mott trainee exits a facile score in the Grade 1 Churchill Downs on May 6, closing from last-of-9 under returning rider Junior Alvarado to take the lead at the top of the stretch and lengthen his winning margin to 4 3/4 lengths. He earned a 105 Beyer Speed Figure in his 5-year-old debut.

Dual Grade 1-winner Dr. Schivel makes his first trip to the East Coast for conditioner Mark Glatt on the heels of an impressive 4 1/4-length allowance win on May 13 at Santa Anita Park that garnered a career-high 105 Beyer Speed Figure.

Graded stakes-winner Charge It seeks his first Grade 1 victory for Hall of Fame trainer Todd Pletcher. The son of Tapit fits in among the top contenders of the field in terms of speed figures with a career-high 111 Beyer Speed Figure when taking the Grade 3 Dwyer by 23 lengths here in June.

Zandon, winner of last year's Grade 1 Blue Grass at Keeneland, may be in search of his first victory since then for trainer Chad Brown, but brings a consistent and competitive record of on-the-board finishes in 5-of-6 starts since.

Fellow Grade 1 winners White Abarrio [post 9, Tyler Gaffalione, 120 pounds] and Doppelganger [post 8, Jevian Toledo, 120 pounds] are both in search of their first trips to the winner's circle since the spring.

5:54 p.m. – Grade 1 Manhattan at Belmont Park

Recent Grade 1 winners Up to the Mark and Red Knight top a decade of contenders for Saturday's 10-furlong inner turf test for 4-year-olds and up.

Up to the Mark exits a breakout performance in the nine-furlong Grade 1 Turf Classic at Churchill Downs on Kentucky Derby Day, dismissing rivals by a widening 3 3/4 lengths and earning an eye-catching 103 Beyer Speed Figure.

Veteran Red Knight enters off a 12th career victory in the 11-furlong Grade 1 Man o' War on May 13, his first top-level tally. The 9-year-old son of Pure Prize was a handy victor under Ortiz Jr., striding out by 1 1/2 lengths at the wire to land his second NYRA stakes, having also taken the 2019 Point of Entry. Since being transferred to Mike Maker prior to his 2022 season, the earner of $1,717,763 has won four of his seven starts, all in stakes company. Tyler Gaffalione picks up the mount from post 6, as Ortiz Jr. has opted for the aforementioned.

7:02 p.m. – Grade 1 Belmont Stakes at Belmont Park

Favorite Forte has drawn the sixth post position in a field of nine for this weekend's Belmont Stakes.

The race will mark a comeback opportunity for the Todd Pletcher-trained colt, who was the subject of much media attention last month when he became a last-minute veterinary scratch from the Kentucky Derby. It was later revealed that, unrelatedly, the Eclipse Award-winner also had a pending drug positive from a race he won as a 2-year-old. The New York Times broke the news of Forte's positive post-race test for meloxicam just ahead of a meeting between his connections and New York stewards, who ultimately disqualified him from his win in the Grade 1 Hopeful Stakes.

Forte was placed on the veterinarian's list in Kentucky following his scratch from the Derby, which prohibited him from running in the Preakness. Pletcher told media over the weekend that the colt had completed the required workout before a regulatory veterinarian and post-work drug testing came back clear.

Forte will face stablemate Tapit Trice in the 1 1/2-mile contest, with the son of Tapit breaking from Post 2. Tapit Trice finished seventh in the Kentucky Derby and previously prevailed in a tough victory in the G1 Blue Grass Stakes.

The third betting choice on the morning line will be Brad Cox trainee Angel of Empire, who won the G1 Arkansas Derby en route to a third-place finish in the Kentucky Derby. He has finished off the board just once in his career of seven races thus far.

Six trainers account for the nine entries in this year's Belmont Stakes.
