Weekend Lineup: Derby Points On The Line In Holy Bull, Bob Lewis

Throughout the year, the NTRA will provide a guide to the best stakes races in North America and beyond. Races are listed in chronological order (all times Eastern). Full previews when available can be found through the link for each race.

A pair of Kentucky Derby qualifying races are on tap this weekend. The 1 1/16-miles, Grade 3 Holy Bull Stakes will headline a 12-race program at Gulfstream Park with five graded stakes worth $600,000 in purses while Santa Anita Park hosts the Grade 3 Robert B. Lewis Stakes. Both preps offer qualifying points for the 147th Derby on May 1 to the top four finishers on a 10-4-2-1 scale.

The Holy Bull and the Robert B. Lewis will both be televised on TVG as part of their usual coast-to-coast coverage. In addition to racing from Gulfstream Park and Santa Anita, TVG will be featuring racing from Oaklawn Park, Fair Grounds, Aqueduct and more. Fans can tune in on TVG, TVG2 and the Watch TVG app which is available on Amazon Fire, Roku and connected Apple TV devices.

The NYRA-produced “America's Day at the Races” program is back in full swing, slated to broadcast races from Aqueduct, Oaklawn Park, and other tracks. Presented by America's Best Racing and Claiborne Farm, the show will run on FS1 and FS2 Jan. 30 and Jan. 31.

Saturday, Jan. 30

1:10 p.m.—$100,000 Grade 3 Kitten's Joy Stakes at Gulfstream Park on TVG

Turf stakes winners Kentucky Pharoah, unbeaten since being moved to the grass last month, and Never Surprised, undefeated in his only two starts last fall, will provide an intriguing matchup when they square off in Saturday's $100,000 Kitten's Joy. Calumet Farm homebred Kentucky Pharoah made his first two starts on dirt in Kentucky, finishing off the board in a pair of maiden special weights behind Mandaloun, a next-out winner that ran third in the Grade 3 Lecomte on Jan. 16, and Caddo River, winner of the Smarty Jones Jan. 22. Never Surprised hasn't raced since opening his career with back-to-back starts 20 days apart in November on the Aqueduct turf. After winning a six-furlong maiden special weight in 1:09.19, he came back with a front-running 1 ¾-length score in the Central Park.

Graded stakes action kicks off at Aqueduct Racetrack for 2021 with a field of five assembling for Saturday's 128th running of the Toboggan for 4-year-olds and upward going seven furlongs over the main track. Trained by Rudy Rodriguez for owner Michael Dubb, the 8-year-old Pete's Play Call was claimed for $62,500 out of a winning effort in an optional-claiming sprint on Nov. 27 at the Big A. He made first start for new connections a winning one when capturing the 6 1/2-furlong Gravesend last out on Jan. 2 at Aqueduct.

Although also nominated to the Holy Bull, the 1 1/16-miles Florida Derby prep, Drain the Clock will seek to remain undefeated in South Florida in the seven-furlong undercard feature for 3-year-olds. Drain the Clock captured his Sept. 12 debut in a five-furlong off-the-turn maiden special weight race at Gulfstream before winning a first-level optional claiming allowance at six furlongs at Gulfstream Park West Oct. 28.

3:46 p.m.—$100,000 Grade 3 Forward Gal Stakes at Gulfstream Park on TVG

John Minchello's Competitive Speed, a bargain $5,000 juvenile purchase turned stakes winner in less than a year, will put her three-race win streak on the line when she tries graded company for the first time in Saturday's $100,000 Forward Gal. Competitive Speed debuted in the slop at Gulfstream Park West in October, finishing sixth in a six-furlong maiden special weight, but hasn't lost since. She graduated by 1 ½ lengths in a 6 ½-furlong maiden claimer at Gulfstream West less than two weeks after her unveiling and made her Gulfstream debut Dec. 6, coming from off the pace to take a starter optional claimer by 4 ½ lengths before stepping up to stakes company in the 6 ½-furlong Glitter Woman Jan. 2.

4:18 p.m.—$100,000 Grade 3 Sweetest Chant Stakes at Gulfstream Park on TVG

Con Lima, who stepped up and stretched out to become a stakes winner last month, goes after a third straight victory in Saturday's $100,000 Sweetest Chant. Con Lima comes from the barn of Todd Pletcher, who also trained her sire, 2014 Florida Derby winner Constitution. Already, Con Lima has six races under her belt with three wins and three seconds. Her first four starts came on dirt, including a pair of runner-up finishes in the P.G. Johnson at Saratoga and Our Dear Peggy at Gulfstream in September, both of which were rained off the grass.

4:50 p.m.—$200,000 Grade 3 Holy Bull Stakes at Gulfstream Park on TVG

WinStar Farm LLC and CHC Inc.'s Prime Factor and Repole Stable and St. Elias Stable's Amount are scheduled to bring a combined total of two races of experience into Saturday's $200,000 Holy Bull Stakes. Jumping from maiden special weight company into a graded-stakes may be a lot to ask of lightly raced 3-year-olds, but their trainer, Todd Pletcher, has a history of success with late-developing colts during the winter months at Gulfstream. Prime Factor debuted at Gulfstream Dec. 12 with a stunning 8 ¼-length victory, running six furlongs in 1:10.38 while drawing away powerfully after closely stalking the early pace. Amount overcame bumping at the starts of his Dec. 26 debut, rallying from off the pace to score by 5 ¾ lengths, completing seven furlongs in 1:24.68.

5:33 p.m.—$200,000 Grade 2 San Pasqual Stakes at Santa Anita Park on TVG

The Richard Baltas-trained Idol, Richard Mandella's Tizamagician and Florida invader King Guillermo head a compact field of five older horses in Saturday's San Pasqual Stakes. Idol was attentive to the pace en route to a close second place finish in the Grade 2 San Antonio Stakes on Dec. 26 and will once again get the services of eastern-based Gabriel Saez on Saturday. With an overall mark of 13-3-5-0, Tizamagician comes off an outstanding second condition allowance win on Jan. 2, a race in which he led throughout and took by a half length. Although he'll be facing a graded stakes winner in King Guillermo, Tizamagician has the advantage of a sharp recent win over the track as he once again runs out of his own stall for Mandella.

6:37 p.m.—$100,000 Grade 3 Robert B. Lewis Stakes at Santa Anita Park on TVG

Although Bob Baffert will be packing a heavy one-two punch with Spielberg and Medina Spirit, Saturday's Robert B. Lewis Stakes has attracted a very competitive field of eight sophomores, with no clear-cut standout. Spielberg comes off a gutty nose victory at the same distance in the Grade 2 Los Alamitos Futurity on Dec. 19, which was his sixth career start. The win no doubt took on added luster when the runner-up, Doug O'Neill's The Great One, came back to demolish a field of maidens by 14 lengths this past Saturday.

Sunday, Jan. 31

6:32 p.m.—$300,000 Grade 3 Houston Ladies Classic at Sam Houston Race Park on TVG

Defending race winner Lady Apple headlines the ninth running of the Ladies Classic, contested at 1 1/16-miles on the main track. The 5-year-old daughter of Curlin is trained by Hall of Fame conditioner Steve Asmussen and has won six of her 18 starts with earnings of $1,045,984. One year ago, Lady Apple closed gamely to defeating a contentious field which included 2019 Kentucky Oaks winner Serengeti Empress and Street Band. Her third place finish in last month's Spanky Broussard at Fair Grounds served as a solid prep for her return to Sam Houston Race Park, where she will break from post position four.

7:07 p.m.—$200,000 Grade 3 John B. Connally Turf Cup Stakes at Sam Houston Race Park on TVG

Trainer Mike Maker has won seven of the past nine editions of the John B. Connally Turf Cup and has three turf specialists set to compete in Sunday's test. One of his prospects this year, Three Diamonds Farm's Marzo, ran third in last year's edition of the race before running in the Grade 1 Sword Dancer at Saratoga. Sired by Medaglia D' Oro, Marzo has won four races and $310,000 to date. He will break from post six with Albin Jimenez in the saddle.

The daughter of Awesome Again took the Monroe Stakes on Sept. 7 and enters Saturday's race off a victory in the Via Borghese Stakes on Dec. 19.

Twenty-two of Bronx Beauty's starts have come in stakes, six of them graded, including a head loss to Lady's Island in the Dec. 12 G3 Sugar Swirl at Gulfstream, a race where the winner survived a jockey's objection for interference to earn her second straight win in the six-furlong sprint.

Colonel Liam was made the narrow 7-2 program favorite over stablemate Largent (9-2) in a field of a dozen stakes winners, 10 of them graded, including G1 winners Aquaphobia, Next Shares, Say the Word and Storm the Court, the 2-year-old male champion of 2019. Colonel Liam and Largent are part of trainer Todd Pletcher's triple threat that includes Social Paranoia, also among the five horses listed at less than double-digit odds.

Installed as the 5-2 morning-line favorite in a field of 12, Knicks Go will have to prove himself by trying to carry his abundant speed beyond 1 1/16-miles, the longest distance he has run during his 17-race career.

Jay Em Ess Stables' California-bred Take the One O One shortens up out of a close third at 29-1 in the Grade 2 San Antonio Stakes while Ax Man, idle since fourth in the Grade 2 San Diego Handicap at 1 1/16 miles July 25, looms dangerous off the bench for Bob Baffert.

Weekend Lineup Presented By Laurel Park Winter Carnival: Sunshine And A Derby Prep

It may be a light weekend for graded stakes, but there are no fewer than 23 non-graded stakes from coast-to-coast on Saturday, including the Winter Carnival Day card at Laurel Park, Sunshine Day for Florida-breds at Gulfstream Park and California Cup Day for Cal-breds or California-sired runners at Santa Anita.

Fair Grounds in New Orleans has a 13-race card with six stakes in all, two of them graded, including the G3 Lecomte, a qualifying points race for the G1 Kentucky Derby. Aqueduct offers the 150th running of the Ladies Handicap, and Tampa Bay Downs presents the Pasco and Gasparilla for 3-year-olds and 3-year-old fillies, respectively, that may have designs on official Derby and Kentucky Derby points races down the road at the Oldsmar, Fla., track.

The action at Laurel gets under way at 12:25 p.m. (all times Eastern) with a nine-race card featuring six consecutive stakes beginning with the Geisha (Race 3, 1:23 p.m.) for older fillies and mares going one mile. The stakes finale at Laurel is the inaugural running of the Spectacular Bid for 3-year-olds going seven furlongs, where a field of nine will go postward.

Winter Carnival Day entries: https://www.equibase.com/static/entry/RaceCardIndexLRL011621USA-EQB.html

Gulfstream Park's 12-race program starts at 11:45 a.m. ET, with the Sunshine Filly and Mare Turf Stakes kicking off the stakes action in the eighth race at 3:15 p.m. The stakes that follow consecutively are the Sunshine Classic, Sunshine Sprint and Sunshine Turf.

Sunshine Day entries: https://www.equibase.com/static/entry/GP011621USA-EQB.html

California Cup Day has 10 races including five stakes for state-bred runners. First post is noon locally (3 p.m. ET) and the Sunshine Millions Filly and Mare Turf gets the stakes going in the day's fourth race at 4:30 p.m. ET. Field sizes throughout the day are large, with 105 horses entered in the 10 races.

Here's a quick look at the graded stakes

Saturday, Jan. 16

5:23 p.m. ET – $125,000 Louisiana Stakes at Fair Grounds

Wells Bayou, the G2 Louisiana Derby winner in 2020 in front-running fashion, makes his first start in the G3 Louisiana Stakes since finishing a well-beaten fifth in a division of the G1 Arkansas Derby at Oaklawn last May 2. Will he be ready to fire his best off the layoff? Blackberry Wine figures to be breathing down the neck of Wells Bayou and comes off a sharp score in allowance company at Fair Grounds Dec. 13, earning a 98 Beyer Speed Figure in the process. Silver Prospector will be running late in this 1 1/16-mile main track race.

https://www.equibase.com/static/entry/FG011621USA10-EQB.html

6:49 p.m. ET – $200,000 Lecomte Stakes at Fair Grounds

Trainer Michael Stidham appears to have a strong one-two punch in this G3 Kentucky Derby points race (note that none of the 11 starters will be treated with race-day Lasix in accordance with the eligibility rules for Derby points). Proxy has won two straight at Fair Grounds for Stidham, and this Tapit colt was produced from Panty Raid, winner of the G1 American Oaks on turf and the G1 Spinster on dirt. His other Lecomte runner is Manor House, an upstart gelding who won his debut at Laurel in December by 12 1/4 lengths. Both showed speed and there are several others in the lineup who could make things very competitive on the front end. That could set things up for the stretch-running colt Midnight Bourbon from the Steve Asmussen barn.

https://www.equibase.com/static/entry/FG011621USA13-EQB.html

Sunday, Jan. 17

6:30 p.m. ET – $100,000 Astra Stakes at Santa Anita

Racing fans will get a glimpse of Santa Anita's famous hillside turf course as the nine fillies and mares in the 1 1/2-mile Astra Stakes begin their journey on that course, cross over the main track, then travel once around the turf oval. Quick, the 5-2 morning line favorite trained by John Sadler, has just one victory from eight starts since being imported from England. Second choice Altea, a French-bred formerly trained by Chad Brown but switched to Michael McCarthy prior to her last start in the Dec. 27 Robert J. Frankel (G3), is 1-for-19 in the U.S. since importation from France. Neither inspires great confidence. Avenue de France does like to win, but two of her three career victories from eight starts were in France.  She comes off an allowance win for Leonard Powell and might be the “now” horse.

Weekend Lineup: Gulfstream’s Tropical Turf Part Of Rainbow 6 Mandatory Payout Sequence

There are only three American graded stakes races this weekend, the Tropical Turf Stakes at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Fla., and the La Canada and Las Cienegas Stakes at Santa Anita in Arcadia, Calif. All are Grade 3 events run on Saturday.

Here is a brief look at all three races. All times are Eastern.

Saturday, Jan. 9

4:49 p.m. – $100,000 Tropical Turf Stakes at Gulfstream Park

The Tropical Turf, for 4-year-olds and upward going one mile on turf, features the return of Analyze It, coming off a career worst performance in the G1 Shadwell Turf Mile at Keeneland on Oct. 3. Off for nearly two years from November 2018 until September 2020, the 6-year-old Point of Entry horse trained by Chad Brown finished eighth as the favorite under Tyler Gaffalione. Irad Ortiz Jr. has the mount on Saturday. Prior to that effort, he won his comeback race, the G3 Red Bank Stakes at Monmouth Park. Three years ago, Analyze It was only beaten three-quarters of a length by Expert Eye when third in the G1 Breeders' Cup Turf Mile. Ride a Comet came back for his own two-year layoff for trainer Mark Casse to win consecutive races at Woodbine on synthetic, including the G2 Kennedy Road. He won the G2 Del Mar Derby in 2018 before going on a lengthy hiatus.

The Tropical Turf will be the fifth race in the Rainbow 6, which will have a mandatory payout on Saturday and is expected to have a wagering pool in the millions of dollars.

https://www.equibase.com/static/entry/GP010921USA10-EQB.html

6:35 p.m. – $200,000 La Canada Stakes at Santa Anita

Fighting Mad has quietly compiled a record of five wins, one second and one third from nine starts for trainer Bob Baffert. The 5-year-old mare by New Year's Day threw in the towel last out when overtaken by both Harvest Moon and Hard Not to Love in the G2 Zenyatta Stakes, but she figures to be out winging on the front end again on Saturday.

Trainer John Shirreffs is going with the up-and-coming jockey Ricky Gonzalez  on Hard Not to Love, the quirky Hard Spun mare who has been ridden by Mike Smith in her last seven starts. She's won five of 10 lifetime but has lost four straight after winning the G2 Santa Monica over seven furlongs last February. Chilean-bred Sanenus, a G1 winner in her native country, returns to California after making two starts at Churchill Downs last fall and could spring a surprise.

https://www.equibase.com/static/entry/SA010921USA8-EQB.html

7:05 p.m. – $100,000 Las Cienegas Stakes at Santa Anita

Intriguing lineup with Brazilian-bred Jolie Olimpica back to defend her title for Richard Mandella, who also has up and comer Superstition in the line-up for this filly and mare turf sprint. If the race sets up for a closer, watch out for Neil Drysdale-trained Oleksandra, the Australia-bred 7-year-old mare who will be flying late under Joel Rosario.  Lighthouse was a dynamo on the Kentucky Downs turf course in September, winning the Music City Stakes by 1 1/2 lengths and Umberto Rispoli rides the turf as well as any jockey in the game.
