Weekend Lineup Presented By Hialeah Park NHC Qualifier: Cigar Mile Day At Aqueduct

This weekend marks the opening of winter meets at both Oaklawn Park in Hot Springs, Ark. and at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Fla. At Oaklawn, Saturday's card features the $150,000 Mistletoe Stakes for 3-year-old fillies, while Gulfstream's Saturday card is highlighted by the nine stakes races that make up the annual Claiming Crown for blue-collar racehorses.

It is also closing weekend at Woodbine Racetrack in Ontario, and Sunday's card features the G3 Valedictory Stakes.

Graded stakes action includes the G1 Cigar Mile at Aqueduct, featuring a pair of Todd Pletcher-trained sophomores against the likes of Independence Hall, Ginobili, and Code of Honor; as well as the G1 Starlet at Los Alamitos for 2-year-old fillies.

Here's a quick look at some of those races:

Saturday

2:43 p.m. – G3 Go For Wand Handicap at Aqueduct

Barry Schwartz's New York-homebred Sharp Starr will look to defend her title in this a one-turn mile handicap for fillies and mares. Trained by Horacio DePaz, Sharp Starr boasts a perfect in-the-money record of 6-2-2-2 at the Big A, including an impressive 15 3/4-length romp last November that registered a career-best 101 Beyer ahead of her Go for Wand coup.

Sharp Starr captured the $250,000 Empire Distaff last month at Belmont, off a two-month layoff, where she notched a 16-1 upset coming from last-of-10 under jockey Jose Ortiz, who will retain the mount from post 7 carrying 119 pounds. She earned a 92 Beyer for the win, her first of the 2021 season in five starts.

Go For Wand Entries

3:14 p.m. – G2 Remsen Stakes at Aqueduct

Jeff Drown's impressive maiden winner Zandon will attempt to rise to the occasion in the 106th running of the $250,000 Remsen for juveniles going nine furlongs. Trained by Chad Brown, who won the 2014 Remsen with Leave the Light On, Zandon was a 1 ½-length winner of his six-furlong debut on Oct. 9 at Belmont Park.

Despite hitting the gate at the break, the son of second crop sire Upstart recovered and sat two lengths off the pace while saving ground in fourth down the backstretch. Joel Rosario angled Zandon a couple of paths wide down the lane and he garnered command in the final furlong to register an 80 Beyer Speed Figure on debut.

The Remsen offers 10-4-2-1 Kentucky Derby qualifying points to the top-four finishers.

Remsen Entries

3:43 p.m. – G2 Demoiselle Stakes at Aqueduct

Manzanita Stables' well-bred Tap the Faith will make her stakes debut in this nine-furlong test for juvenile fillies. Trained by Christophe Clement, the Tapit bay rallied from last-to-first to win her debut by a head travelling a one-turn mile on Nov. 7 at Belmont Park.

A $1.25 million Keeneland September Yearling Sale purchase, Tap the Faith is out of the Super Saver mare Embellish the Lace, who captured the 2015 Grade 1 Alabama at the Spa.

The Demoiselle offers 10-4-2-1 Kentucky Oaks qualifying points to the top-four finishers.

Demoiselle Entries

4:13 p.m. – G1 Cigar Mile at Aqueduct

An accomplished field of eight horses will seek the calendar year's final opportunity for Grade 1 glory on the NYRA circuit in the 32nd running of the $750,000 Cigar Mile.

Owned by WinStar Farm and CHC Inc. and bred in New York by Fred W. Hertrich III and John D. Fielding, Americanrevolution makes his return to graded company after finishing third two starts back in the Grade 1 Pennsylvania Derby on Sept. 25 at Parx, which was won by Hot Rod Charlie over Midnight Bourbon.

Spendthrift Farm homebred Following Sea was a troubled third in the last out Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Sprint and seeks his second graded stakes triumph in Saturday's engagement. The son of second crop sire Runhappy was victorious in wire-to-wire fashion against multiple graded stakes winner Firenze Fire in the six-furlong Grade 2 Vosburgh on Oct. 9 at Belmont.

The one-turn mile will be a swan song for multiple graded stakes-winner Independence Hall who returns to Aqueduct for the first time since capturing the 2020 Jerome. Trained by Pletcher's former assistant Michael McCarthy, Independence Hall arrives off a 7 ¼-length runaway victory at 1 1/8 miles in the Grade 2 Fayette on October 30 over a sloppy and sealed Keeneland main track, where he registered a career-best 105 Beyer.

Trainer Richard Baltas will ship Ginobili cross-country, attempting to give the son of Munnings a second graded stakes triumph. Owned by Baltas in partnership with Nick Casato's Slum Dunk Racing, Jerry McClanahan and Michael Nentwig, Ginobili ended a nine race losing streak in July at Del Mar capturing a one mile allowance optional claimer by 9 ¾ lengths. He followed with a score in the Grade 2 Pat O' Brien one month later at Del Mar, which offered a “Win and You're In” berth to the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile, where Ginobili finished second to Life Is Good on Nov. 6 at Del Mar.

As the lone millionaire in the race, William S. Farish's Code of Honor boasts a field-best $2,951,320 in lifetime earnings and seeks a third Grade 1 victory for Hall of Fame trainer Shug McGaughey. This year, he captured the Grade 3 Phillip H. Iselin in August at Monmouth Park. He enters from a last out second to Independence Hall in the Fayette.

Bill Mott will attempt a fourth victory in a race named after one of the greatest horses he has ever trained when the Hall of Famer saddles 3-year-old Olympiad. Owned by Grandview Equine, Cheyenne Stable and LNJ Foxwoods, Olympiad defeated older winners last out in a first-level allowance at Keeneland going seven furlongs. He broke his maiden in October 2020 against subsequent stakes winners Caddo River and Greatest Honour travelling the same distance at Belmont Park.

Cigar Mile Entries

6:58 p.m. – G1 Starlet Stakes at Los Alamitos

Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert will have three opportunities to win the Grade 1, $300,000 Starlet – the final Grade 1 of 2021 for 2-year-old fillies – for a fifth consecutive year Saturday at Los Alamitos.

Baffert, whose streak of Starlet victories includes Dream Tree (2017), Chasing Yesterday (2018), Bast (2019) and Varda last year, entered Grace Adler, Eda, and Benedict Canyon in 2021.

Owned by Willow Grace Farm and Michael Lund Petersen, Grace Adler will be seeking the second Grade I success of her young career. The daughter of Curlin and the Newfoundland mare Our Khrysty dominated seven opponents by 11 ¼ lengths in the Del Mar Debutante Sept. 5.

Eda, a Munnings filly out of the Lemon Drop Kid mare Show Me, is the most accomplished of the Baffert trio in terms of wins. She's 3-for-5 with a bankroll of $190,000. Owned by Baoma Corporation, Eda enters off consecutive victories, taking the Anoakia Oct. 24 and the Desi Arnaz Nov. 13. The Starlet will mark her first start beyond seven furlongs.

Starlet Entries

Sunday

5:53 p.m. – G3 Valedictory Stakes at Woodbine

Most recently, Sir Winston, the 5-year-old son of Awesome Again trained by Mark Casse, ran second in the G2 Autumn Stakes, while Special Forces ran third. That order was reversed two starts back in the G3 Durham, with Special Forces besting Sir Winston by a half-length.

A full field of 14 with one also-eligible has signed on for this marathon event.

Valedictory Entries

Two-time Grade 2 winner As Time Goes By will have six rivals in her return to Los Alamitos Sunday. Weekend Lineup Presented By Hialeah Park NHC Qualifier: Holiday Feast For Horseplayers

Between Del Mar's closing weekend Turf Festival (with a mandatory payout looming on Sunday in the Jackpot Pick 6), Churchill Downs' traditional Thanksgiving weekend stakes program, solid racing at Aqueduct and champion Pink Lloyd's farewell performance at Woodbine, horseplayers are in for a feast this holiday.

Here's a quick look at some of those races:

Thursday

4:22 p.m. – G2 Falls City Stakes at Churchill Downs

Juddmonte's multiple graded stakes-winning filly Bonny South headlines a competitive field of seven fillies and mares that entered the 106th running of the $500,000 Grade 2 Falls City, the centerpiece on the 12-race Thanksgiving Day program at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky. Trained by Brad Cox, Bonny South bypassed the G1 Breeders' Cup Distaff at Del Mar Thoroughbred Club in Del Mar, Calif., Nov. 6 and stayed at Churchill Downs for the Falls City. The 4-year-old daughter of Munnings finished third in the $500,000 G1 Spinster to multiple G1 winner Letruska. Prior to her Spinster effort, Bonny South nearly defeated Letruska in the $600,000 G1 Personal Ensign at Saratoga but came up a half-length short.

Envoutante is slated to defend her title in the Falls City. The 4-year-old filly by Uncle Mo won the $150,000 Shawnee Stakes at Churchill Downs in late May. Following her 4 ¼-length victory, the Kenny McPeek trainee had back-to-back third-place finishes to Letruska in the $300,000 G2 Fleur de Lis and Shedaresthedevil in the $400,000 G3 Locust Grove. In her most recent start, Envoutante finished fifth in the Spinster. McPeek's go-to rider Brian Hernandez Jr. will be in the saddle from post 4.

Falls City Entries

4:33 p.m. – G3 Red Carpet Handicap at Del Mar

The Red Carpet Handicap, a marathon of a mile and three eighths that will be contested on the Jimmy Durante Turf Course, has brought out five long-winded distaffers who'll be shooting for the lionesses' share of the $100,000 purse.

Three of the five runners have European backgrounds and one of them, L N J Foxwoods' Luck, figures to go favored off her two sharp efforts this year since coming stateside. The 4-year-old daughter of the top American grass sire Kitten's Joy smartly won an allowance race at Del Mar in August, then came back on Oct. 2 in the Grade 1 Rodeo Drive Stakes at Santa Anita to just miss to the multiple-stakes winner Going to Vegas.

Neige Blanche finished fourth in the Rodeo Drive in her most recent try. The French-bred 4-year-old by the Irish sire Anodin captured the CTT & TOC overnight handicap at Del Mar on Aug. 14 at the same 11-furlong distance on grass as the Red Carpet. Earlier this year she won the Grade 3 Santa Barbara Sakes at a mile and one-half on the grass at Santa Anita.

England's Rose comes into the affair off two straight wins, the most recent being the Swingtime overnight stakes at Santa Anita. Her previous victory was at a mile and three eights on the lawn at Del Mar on Sept. 3.

Single Soul is in from the east coast to try her luck Thursday. She was an allowance winner at Belmont Park on Oct. 22 in her most recent effort.

Nicest was a distant fourth in the Grade 1 Queen Elizabeth II Cup at Keeneland Oct. 16 in her first U.S. outing. The 3-year-old by American Pharoah had been taking on stakes horses in England and Ireland prior to that.

Red Carpet Entries

Friday

3:43 p.m. – G3 Comely Stakes at Aqueduct

Multiple graded stakes-winning Crazy Beautiful made an impressive seasonal turf debut last out but will return to more familiar surroundings on a dirt track as part of an eight-horse field of 3-year-olds fillies competing at 1 1/8 miles in the $200,000 Comely. Crazy Beautiful has compiled a 4-2-0 record in eight starts in 2021.

Three Diamond Farm's Army Wife has finished in the money in each of her last eight starts dating to October 2020 for trainer Mike Maker. The Declaration of War filly won the prestigious G2 Black-Eyed Susan on the eve of the Preakness at Pimlico before posting a 3 3/4-length score in the G3 Iowa Stakes in July. Elevated to G1 levels, Army Wife held her own, earning black type twice, starting with a third-place effort behind Clairiere and winner Malathaat in the Alabama before garnering another third in the Cotillion behind Obligatory and a winning Clairirere in September.

Victories in her last four starts – and five wins in her last six races – have earned Vegas Weekend a seat at a higher stakes table as she makes her first stakes appearance in her 12th career start. Trained by Rob Atras, the Mineshaft filly has won at distances ranging from 6 1/2 furlongs to 1 1/8 miles. Claimed for $50,000 out of a win traveling nine furlongs on Aug. 19 at Saratoga, Vegas Weekend bested optional claimers by three-quarters of a length off the layoff going seven furlongs on Nov. 12 at the Big A.

Comely Entries

5:56 p.m. – G1 Clark Handicap at Churchill Downs

Godolphin's multiple graded stakes-winning colt Maxfield drew post No. 8 and will face a talented field of seven rivals that in the $750,000 Clark, the premier race of the Churchill Downs Fall Meet. Maxfield's 2021 campaign includes two victories at Churchill Downs in the $400,000 Alysheba and $600,000 G2 Stephen Foster. The talented Kentucky-bred finished second to eventual G1 Breeders' Cup Classic hero Knicks Go in the $1 million G1 Whitney and second to front-running Art Collector in the $500,000 G1 Woodward Stakes. Overall, Maxfield sports a stout career record of 7-2-1 from 10 starts and earnings of $1,550,902. He will be ridden in the Clark by regular rider Jose Ortiz.

Chief among Maxfield's Clark adversaries is Winchell Thoroughbreds' improving 3-year-old Midnight Bourbon. Campaigned by Hall of Famer Steve Asmussen, Midnight Bourbon was prominent in nearly all of the top 3-year-old races this year. The Tiznow colt finished a troubled sixth in the G1 Kentucky Derby when he broke slowly from the starting gate and was forced wide on both turns. Following the Derby, Midnight Bourbon took the lead in the final turn of the $1 million G1 Preakness Stakes but ultimately gave way to finish second behind Rombauer. Midnight Bourbon enters the Clark following back-to-back runner-up finishes in the $1.25 million G1 Travers and $1 million G1 Pennsylvania Derby. Jockey Joel Rosario, who won the 2019 edition of the Clark aboard Tom's d'Etat, will have the call from the rail.

Hall of Fame trainer Todd Pletcher entered two horses in this year's Clark: St. Elias Stable's two-time graded stakes winner Dr Post and Wertheimer and Frere's G1 victor Happy Saver. In his last start, Dr Post finished one length behind Maxfield in the Woodward. The 4-year-old son of Quality Road has a pair of G3 victories this year. Happy Saver, a 4-year-old chestnut colt by Pletcher's Kentucky Derby-winner Super Saver, was second last out in the $1 million G1 Jockey Club Gold Cup. He won the 2020 edition of the race by three-quarters of a length. The five-time winner from seven starts will cut back in distance after competing at the 1 ¼-mile distance in the Jockey Club Gold Cup and the $400,000 G2 Suburban, where he finished third.

Weekend Lineup: Female Sprinters Highlight Saturday’s Action, Mighty Heart Returns On Sunday

A quartet of graded stakes races highlight this weekend's racing action across North America, but Saturday's highlight is the $300,000 Dream Supreme Stakes at Churchill Downs featuring the rematch of top female sprinters Bell's the One and Sconsin. Both skipped a trip to the Breeders' Cup World Championships last weekend, and return in this spot to renew their rivalry.

Saturday

3:56 p.m. – Grade 3 Maple Leaf Stakes at Woodbine

Ten fillies and mares will travel 1 ¼ miles on the Tapeta in Saturday's Maple Leaf Stakes. Starters include the Mark Casse-trained foursome of Art of Almost, Broadway Lady, Crystal Glacier and Skygaze. Graham Motion will send out Sister Otoole, a 4-year-old Florida-bred daughter of Amira's Prince (IRE), who sports a 2-3-3 record from 10 starts.

Maple Leaf Entries

4:36 p.m. – Grade 2 Bessarabian Stakes at Woodbine

The seven-furlong main track feature for fillies and mares, three-years-old and upward, has drawn nine starters, including Juxtapose. Trained by Steve Owens, the Kentucky-bred heads into her second straight stakes date after notching a third in the Grade 3 Ontario Matron on Oct. 10 at Woodbine.

Bessarabian Entries

5:36 p.m. – $300,000 Dream Supreme Stakes at Churchill Downs

Bell's The One and Sconsin will face one another for the sixth time in their careers on Saturday beneath the Twin Spires, this time over six furlongs. The last time they met, Sconsin bested Bell's the One by a half-length in the Open Mind Stakes on Sept. 18. However, Bell's the One came back to win the G2 Thoroughbred Club of America Stakes at Keeneland, and Sconsin hasn't raced since the Open Mind, so recent form could give Bell's the One the edge.//
