Weekend Lineup: Four Derby Preps Featured On 1/ST Saturday

A quartet of points races on the Road to the Kentucky Derby are scheduled for this Saturday, March 5, from coast to coast across the United States.

They include the G2 Fountain of Youth at Gulfstream (50-20-10-5), the G2 San Felipe at Santa Anita (50-20-10-5), the G3 Gotham at Aqueduct (50-20-10-5), and the John Battaglia Memorial at Turfway Park (10-4-2-1).

Among the top 3-year-olds in action this weekend are: Forbidden Kingdom, Doppelganger, Emmanuel, Simplification, Rattle N Roll, Morello, Rockefeller, and Tiz the Bomb.

Four points races for the Kentucky Oaks are also set to be held this weekend.

In addition, a trio of Grade 1 contests have been carded on a big Saturday at Santa Anita, including the Beholder Mile, the Kilroe Mile, and the Santa Anita Handicap.

There will be Coast-to-Coast All Dirt and Coast-to-Coast All Turf Pick 5s featuring the 1/ST Saturday races with a low 12-percent takeout and a $1 minimum.

5:27 PM – G3 Gotham Stakes at Aqueduct Racetrack

Hall of Famer Todd Pletcher will seek a third Gotham coup when sending out Dean's List and Golden Code for their respective stakes debuts. By champion-producing sire Speightstown, Dean's List will see some added ground for Saturday's engagement, arriving off two six-furlong victories at Gulfstream Park.

Calumet Farm's Golden Code will try to solidify a last out runaway maiden triumph going seven furlongs against fellow New York-breds. Bred by Barry R. Ostrager, the son of Honor Code was never in doubt at second asking, gliding home to a 10 3/4-length victory on Feb. 5 at the Big A. This winning effort came after a distant second to fellow Gotham aspirant Bold Journey on Dec. 18 over the same surface.

G3 Nashua winner Rockefeller returns to New York by way of Southern California. Trained by Hall of Famer Bob Baffert, Rockefeller was a wire-to-wire winner of the one-turn mile Nashua in November at Belmont Park two months before finishing second to stablemate Newgrange in the G3 Sham at Santa Anita.

Gotham Entries

5:30 PM – G2 San Felipe Stakes at Santa Anita Park

Forbidden Kingdom and Doppelganger, who finished 2 ¾ lengths apart at seven furlongs on Jan. 29, will renew acquaintances at 1 1/16 miles on Saturday as they head the 83rd running of the Grade 2, $400,000 San Felipe Stakes at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, Calif.

An ultra-quick chestnut colt by 2015 Triple Crown winner American Pharoah, the Richard Mandella-trained Forbidden Kingdom sped to the early lead from his rail post position and dominated the G2 San Vicente Stakes on Jan. 29, winning by 2 ¼ lengths while the Bob Baffert-conditioned Doppelganger checked in fourth as the 4-5 favorite.

Owned by MyRacehorse and Spendthrift Farm, LLC, Forbidden Kingdom, who earned a lofty 94 Beyer Speed Figure in taking the Jan. 29 San Vicente, is out of the Five Star Day mare Just Louise. With two wins, a second and a third from four starts, Forbidden Kingdom, who was purchased for $300,000 as a yearling, has earnings of $194,000 and will be ridden for the fifth consecutive time by Juan Hernandez.

A 3 ½ length first-out maiden winner going six furlongs at Los Alamitos on Dec. 11, Doppelganger was subsequently off as the heavy favorite in the San Vicente and although he found his best stride in deep stretch he couldn't make up the necessary ground to threaten for the win while earning an 89 Beyer.

San Felipe Entries

5:42 PM – G2 Fountain of Youth Stakes at Gulfstream Park

WinStar Farm LLC and Siena Farm LLC's Emmanuel concedes experience to his rivals Saturday, when he is scheduled to make his stakes debut in the $400,000 Fasig-Tipton Fountain of Youth (G2) in only his third career start. The race will be held over 1 1/16 miles at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Fla.

Emmanuel has been quite impressive in romping to victory in his first two starts, but the nagging question facing bettors will be: Does the 3-year-old son of More Than Ready have the stuff to prevail over his more seasoned competition in the prep for the April 2 $1 million Curlin Florida Derby (G1)?

Emmanuel's lack of race experience will hardly discourage handicappers familiar with Pletcher's past performances with lightly raced horses at Gulfstream. The Hall of Famer saddled Itsaknockout for a 2015 Fountain of Youth victory in his third career start following a pair of victories at Gulfstream.

Lucky Seven Stable's Rattle N Roll brings Grade 1 credentials into the Fountain of Youth, in which he is scheduled to make his 2022 debut after closing out his juvenile campaign with an off-the-pace 4 ½-length victory in the Oct. 9 Breeders' Futurity (G1) at Keeneland.

Fountain of Youth Entries

7:00 PM – Grade 1 Beholder Mile at Santa Anita Park

The leading money earner in the field with $931,658, Envoutante will ship in from her Gulfstream Park base and try to give trainer Kenny McPeek his second consecutive Beholder win, as he was also the trainer of the great Swiss Skydiver.

A 5-year-old mare by Uncle Mo out of the Bluegrass Cat mare Enchante, Envoutante has been idle since executing a front-running six length score in the G2 Fall City Stakes over a sloppy track at Churchill Downs Nov. 25. Owned by Walking L Thoroughbreds, LLC and Three Chimneys Farm, she's a three-time graded stakes winner with an overall mark of 16-6-2-4.

Beholder Mile Entries

7:30 PM – Grade 1 Frank E. Kilroe Mile at Santa Anita Park

Atop his game at age seven, trainer Phil D'Amato's Count Again rates top billing in Saturday's Grade 1, $500,000 Frank E. Kilroe Mile, as 12 older horses compete over the Santa Anita turf in Arcadia, Calif.

Three for five at a mile on grass lifetime, Count Again rallied from far back in last year's Kilroe to finish third by a half length. An Ontario, Canadian-bred gelding by Awesome Again, Count Again was winless in five starts last year but kept top graded stakes company while earning more than $132,000.

Ridden patiently in the G3 Thunder Road Stakes at a mile on turf here Feb. 5, Count Again overhauled heavily favored Subconscious to prevail by a half length and figures to be very tough right back at his favorite distance.

Kilroe Mile Entries

8:00 PM – Grade 1 Santa Anita Handicap at Santa Anita Park

Fresh off perhaps the best race of his career, C R K Stable's Express Train heads a field of eight older horses going 1 1/4 miles this Saturday in the 85th running of the Grade 1, $650,000 Santa Anita Handicap. A gutty nose winner of the opening day G2 San Antonio Stakes at 1 1/16 miles on Dec. 26, Express Train, a 5-year-old horse by Union Rags, put it all together in a rousing 3 ¼ length score in the G2 San Pasqual at 1 1/8 miles on Feb. 5. He goes in search of his third consecutive win for trainer John Shirreffs and jockey Victor Espinoza.

A big third, beaten 4 ½ lengths by super horse Life Is Good as a 26-1 longshot in the G1 Pegasus World Cup Invitational on Jan. 29 at Gulfstream Park, owner Steve Moger's Stilleto Boy posted a Big 'Cap-best last-out Beyer Speed Figure of 104 and will likely press the early pace on Saturday.

Brad Cox, 2021 Eclipse Award Trainer of the Year, will be well represented by consistent Warrant, who comes off a third place finish to recently anointed Kentucky Derby winner Mandaloun in the G3 Louisiana Stakes Jan. 22 at Fairgrounds in New Orleans. Warrant will be making his second start of the year in the Big 'Cap.

Weekend Lineup: Kentucky Derby/Oaks Points Get Higher With Fair Grounds Preps

Saturday's Grade 2 Risen Star Stakes at Fair Grounds in New Orleans, La., marks the first 85-point qualifying race for this year's G1 Kentucky Derby, with 50 points to the winner, 20 for second, 10 for third and five for fourth.

The same points formula is in place for the G2 Rachel Alexandra Stakes, a qualifying race at Fair Grounds on the road to the Kentucky Oaks. Those two races, along with two other graded stakes, highlight a big 13-race card at Fair Grounds.

Laurel Park in Maryland also has a major stakes day, the Winter Sprintfest, that includes two graded races, the G3 Barbara Fritchie Stakes for fillies and mares and the G3 General George for sprinters 4-year-olds and up. Both races are run at seven furlongs. Several other non-graded stakes are also on tap at Laurel.

Saturday

3:55 p.m. (all times Eastern) – Barbara Fritchie Stakes at Laurel Park

Charlton Baker sends Glass Ceiling from New York in search of a first graded stakes victory for the Constitution mare, who was claimed last May for $40,000. She's razor sharp, coming into the race off two consecutive wins and three of her last four. Regular rider Dylan Davis will be aboard.

Michael Trombetta saddles Jakarta, a 7-year-old veteran mare who has spent most of the last couple of years racing on turf while in the care of trainer Mike Maker. Last out she faded late after leading the way into the stretch of the G2 Inside Information at Gulfstream Park.

Barbara Fritchie entries

4: 27 p.m. – General George Stakes at Laurel Park

Cordmaker is a win machine for trainer Rodney Jenkins but has yet to pose for pictures following a graded stakes. As the 7-5 favorite in his 36th career start, that blank line might be filled in Saturday afternoon in the General George. The Curlin gelding is 10 for 26 over the Laurel surface and has his steady companion, Victor Carrasco, in the irons. Of his six rivals, Sir Alfred James could pose the stiffest challenge to Cordmaker, though he is coming off two poor performances on turf and synthetic at Fair Grounds and Turfway Park, respectively.

General George entries

5:25 p.m. – Mineshaft Stakes at Fair Grounds

Interesting lineup that matches established veteran stakes performances like Silver Prospector, Title Ready and West Coast invader Midcourt against lightly raced 4-year-olds Olympiad, Miles D and Untreated from the respective barns of Bill Mott, Chad Brown and Todd Pletcher. Olympiad is the 3-1 morning line favorite under Junior Alvarado.

Mineshaft entries

5:56 p.m. – Fair Grounds Stakes at Fair Grounds

Largent, a close second to Todd Pletcher stablemate Colonel Liam in the 2021 G1 Pegasus World Cup Turf Invitational, likely needed his last start when fourth in the G3 Tropical Turf, his first start since Pegasus. The son of Into Mischief has been first or second in 10 of 11 starts, his only off-the-board performance coming last out. Two Emmys, with two wins and three seconds from seven starts over the Fair Grounds turf course, is coming off a huge 5-year-old season that saw the English Channel gelding upset the G1 Mr. D Stakes (formerly Arlington Million)  at 27-1 odds. He's tough to overhaul if given an easy lead.

Fair Grounds Stakes entries

6:27 p.m. – Rachel Alexandra Stakes at Fair Grounds

Seven of the 11 3-year-old fillies entered carry a morning line of 8-1 or lower, suggesting this is a very evenly matched field. It's also deep in talent. La Crete (Steve Asmussen) and North County (Brendan Walsh) are unbeaten stakes winners, while Dream Lith, California and Hidden Connection each have each won a graded stakes. California shippers Miss Mattie B and Awake at Midnyte make this race even that much tougher to handicap.

Rachel Alexandra entries

6:58 p.m. – Risen Star Stakes at Fair Grounds

Mark Casse-trained Pappacap has the most graded stakes experience in the field of 10, with a win in Del Mar's G2 Best Pal and good, non-winning efforts in four other graded stakes. He comes off a third-place finish to Call Me Midnight in the Lecomte at Fair Grounds, beaten less than a length. Smile Happy is perfect in two starts last year but the Runhappy colt hasn't raced since winning the G2 Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes in late November. He was flattered when KJC runner-up Classic Causeway came back to win last week's G3 Sam F. Davis at Tampa Bay Downs. But Slow Down Andy was really flattered when Messier, the horse he beat in the G2 Los Alamitos Futurity, came back to win the G3 Robert B. Lewis Stakes at Santa Anita by 15 lengths.

Risen Star entries

Sunday

12:25 a.m. – Hyacinth Stakes at Tokyo Racecourse

Not much is known about this field of Japanese runners and whether any of them would go on to the Kentucky Derby if they win this Japan Road to the Kentucky Derby qualifying race. The link below is an analysis from the Churchill Downs website.

Hyacinth entries

7:39 p.m. – San Simeon Stakes at Santa Anita

Some tough, hard-trying turf sprinters line up for the merry chase down the Santa Anita hillside grass course. Barraza has won three in a row for trainer Vladimir Cerin and loves the course. Beer Can Man is tough as nails with six wins and two seconds from 11 career starts. Bombard is a 9-year-old from the Richard Mandella barn who has also run very well down the hill at Santa Anita.

Weekend Lineup: Loading Up Before Sunday’s Game

This weekend's graded stakes action is restricted to Saturday racing, thanks to the Big Game coming up on Sunday! Features include a pair of Kentucky Derby 10-point prep races in the final week before points rise to 50 per race, as well as the Grade 3, $600,000 Razorback Handicap at Oaklawn Park and stakes action from Gulfstream, Santa Anita, Aqueduct, Golden Gate, and Tampa Bay Downs.

Saturday

4:54 p.m. – G3 Sam F. Davis Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs

A field of 12 sophomores, a few more promising than the others, is expected to line up about that time for the 42nd running of the Grade 3, $250,000 Sam F. Davis Stakes, a 1 1/16-mile race awarding “Road to the Kentucky Derby” points to the first four finishers on a 10-4-2-1 scale.

Howling Time, who is owned by Albaugh Family Stables and will be ridden by his regular jockey, Joseph Talamo, won his first two starts as a 2-year-old, including the Street Sense Stakes on Oct. 31 at Churchill Downs, before fading to a fifth-place finish in the Grade 2 Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes on Nov. 27 at Churchill.

Joining Howling Time from the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes is Kentucky-bred colt Classic Causeway, who finished a solid second in that race to Smile Happy. Irad Ortiz, Jr., will take over the riding assignment from Joel Rosario. Classic Causeway is 1-for-3, including a third-place finish on Oct. 9 in the Grade 1 Claiborne Breeders' Futurity at Keeneland.

While Classic Causeway earned six points on the “Road to the Kentucky Derby” for his two graded-stakes efforts, Red Oak Stable's unbeaten (3-for-3) colt Make It Big gained 10 points on Dec. 17 by winning the Springboard Mile Stakes at Remington Park in Oklahoma, his second stakes victory. Trainer Saffie Joseph, Jr., said Jose Ortiz, Irad's brother, will again ride Make It Big.

Hall of Fame trainer Mark Casse has entered three horses in the Sam F. Davis, including Grade 3 Grey Stakes winner God of Love, a supplementary entry after not being originally nominated. Casse's other runners are Golden Glider and Volcanic.

Sam Davis Entries

5:56 p.m. – G3 Razorback Handicap at Oaklawn

Lone Rock began 2021 winning an $89,000 allowance race at Oaklawn. The stakes are much, much higher to begin 2022 when Lone Rock launches his 7-year-old campaign in the $600,000 Razorback Handicap (G3) for older horses Saturday at Oaklawn. Trainer Robertino Diodoro said if all goes well in the Razorback, Lone Rock will be seriously considered for the $12 million Dubai World Cup (G1) at approximately 1 ¼ miles March 26 in the United Arab Emirates. That scenario would have been unimaginable a year ago as Lone Rock was preparing for the late February allowance race at Oaklawn after Diodoro reclaimed the gelding for $40,000 in November 2020 at Churchill Downs.

The Razorback drew nine horses, eight being stakes winners. Thomas Shelby is seeking his first career stakes victory after nearly toppling his heralded stablemate in the Tinsel. Lone Rock is the 3-1 program favorite after bankrolling $1,148,641 in his career, including $842,884 last year.

Razorback Entries

7:30 p.m. – El Camino Real Derby at Golden Gate Fields

A pair of Southern California shippers make the trip north to Golden Gate for this 10-point Derby prep. The headliner in the field is Doug O'Neill trainee MacKinnon, who won a pair of stakes on turf as a 2-year-old-the Juvenile Turf at Del Mar and the Zuma Beach at Santa Anita-before finishing third in the Breeders Cup Juvenile Turf last November. Most recently, the son of Triple Crown winner American Pharoah finished fourth behind next-out Southwest Stakes victor Newgrange in the Grade 3 Sham Stakes on dirt at Santa Anita. Southern California-based jockey Abel Cedillo, who has a total of four mounts on the day, is named to ride McKinnon.

Trainer Bob Baffert won the El Camino Real Derby in 2019 with Azul Coast and sends out $620,000 yearling purchase Blackadder in the 2022 edition. In his most recent afternoon appearance, the son of Quality Road broke his maiden in a two-turn race at Santa Anita on Dec. 26. He faces winners for the first time and will be ridden by Edwin Maldonado for the first time. Blackadder is owned by the large partnership of SF Racing LLC, Madaket Stables LLC, Robert Masterson, Stonestreet Stables LLC, Jay Schoenfarber, Waves Edge Capital LLC, Catherine Donovan, Golconda Stable and Siena Farm LLC.

Weekend Lineup: Three Stops On The Road To Louisville

A trio of Kentucky Derby prep races are on the cards this weekend, including stakes at Gulfstream Park, Aqueduct, and Santa Anita.

Each offers the winner 10 points toward the Run for the Roses.

The Grade 3 Holy Bull at Gulfstream is perhaps the most contentious of the three, pitting G2 Remsen winner Mo Donegal against a pair of G1-placed runners, Tiz the Bomb and Giant Game.

Aqueduct's G3 Withers features a field of 11 topped by Jerome winner Courvoisier, while a field of five will contest Sunday's G3 Bob Lewis Stakes at Santa Anita.

Also on tap this weekend are four additional graded stakes at Gulfstream, a pair of G3 turf contests at Tampa Bay Downs, four other graded stakes at Santa Anita, and 10 Louisiana-bred stakes worth just shy of $1 million at Delta Downs.

Saturday

4:25 p.m. – G3 Withers Stakes at Aqueduct

Courvoisier will look to build on a 10-point triumph last out in the Jerome on New Year's Day at Aqueduct. The regally-bred son of Tapit, out of 2014 Champion 2-Year-Old Filly Take Charge Brandi, secured outside stalking position in the one-turn mile Jerome and matched strides with pacesetter Hagler around the far turn before pulling away to a 1 1/4-length triumph over the sloppy and sealed main track. Trainer Kelly Breen said the sizable Courvoisier, who is owned by Hill 'n' Dale Equine Holdings and James Spry, will appreciate a return to two turns.

Looking to contest Courvoisier once more are Jerome second, third, fourth and sixth-place finishers Smarten Up, Cooke Creek, Unbridled Bomber and Mr Jefferson.

Among the fresh faces is Klaravich Stables' Early Voting, who will see added ground following a triumphant career debut going a one-turn mile on December 18 at Aqueduct. Early Voting was forwardly placed from the outside down the backstretch and opened up in the stretch before fending off a late rally by Matt Doyle to win by 1 1/2 lengths as the heavy favorite.

Withers Entries

5:10 p.m. – G3 Holy Bull Stakes at Gulfstream

Donegal Racing's Mo Donegal is poised to make his 2022 debut in the $250,000 Holy Bull (G3) Saturday at Gulfstream Park, and his Hall of Fame trainer, Todd Pletcher, has opted for no soft spot for the son of Uncle Mo's highly anticipated return to action.

Although Mo Donegal, 3-1 on the morning line, will be put to the test in a field that includes two Grade 1 stakes-placed opponents, the Pletcher-trained colt has already passed the most rigorous test for all Triple Crown prospects – the two-turn test over 1 1/8-miles.  The $250,000 purchase at the 2020 Keeneland September yearling sale enters the Holy Bull off a gutsy triumph in the 1 1/8-mile Remsen Stakes (G2) at Aqueduct Dec. 4.

Phoenix Thoroughbreds LTD's Tiz the Bomb rode a three-race winning streak into the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf, where he dropped back to 12th while in traffic before rallying strongly to finish second behind Modern Games.

Giant Game made a four-wide move into contention in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile before settling for third in his stakes debut. The son of Giants Causeway, who will be ridden by Luis Saez for the first time Saturday, had previously finished third in the debut before graduating by three lengths at Keeneland in his two-turn debut.

Tami Bobo's Simplification, who won the Mucho Macho Man by four lengths in front-running style, is expected to set or attend the early pace while stretching out around two turns for the first time. The long-striding son of Not This Time broke his maiden at Gulfstream by 16 ¾ lengths at six furlongs in his second career start. He came back to finish a troubled third again at six-furlongs before impressively stretching out to a mile in the Mucho Macho Man.

Holy Bull Entries

6:06 p.m. – G2 Santa Monica Stakes at Santa Anita

Fresh off the biggest win of her career, the Bo Hirsch homebred Ce Ce heads a field of five older fillies and mares going seven furlongs in Saturday's Grade 2, $200,000 Santa Monica Stakes at Santa Anita.

A handy 2 ½ length winner of the G1 Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint going seven panels at Del Mar Nov. 6, Ce Ce will be bidding for her third consecutive graded stakes win in what will be her first start at age six on Saturday.

Bob Baffert will be represented by a pair of distaffers, recent Grade 1 winner Kalypso and Merneith, who ran a big second in the ungraded Kalookan Queen at 6 ½ furlongs Jan. 2 following a nearly one year absence. A winner of last year's Santa Monica, Merneith, a 5-year-old mare by American Pharoah, will be ridden for the third consecutive time by Edwin Maldonado, who was aboard for last year's Santa Monica score.

Hronis Racing's Park Avenue, who had a two-game winning streak snapped when a well beaten second in the G3 La Canada Stakes going a mile and one sixteenth on Jan. 1, will shorten up out of five consecutive routes in what will be her second stakes engagement.

Santa Monica Entries

7:10 p.m. – G2 San Pasqual at Santa Anita

In what shapes up as an important prep to the Grade 1 Santa Anita Handicap on March 5, C R K Stable's Express Train heads a field of six older horses going a mile and one eighth in Saturday's Grade 2, $200,000 San Pasqual Stakes at Santa Anita.

A game nose winner over A-List sophomore Hot Rod Charlie in the G2 San Antonio Stakes going a mile and one sixteenth on Dec. 26, Express Train is the defending champ in the San Pasqual and he'll be seeking his fourth graded stakes win on Saturday.

A newly turned 4-year-old, Twin Creeks Racing Stables' Law Professor prevailed in a protracted stretch battle with Grade 1 winner Beyond Brilliant to take the G2 Santa Anita Mathis Mile by a half length on Dec. 26 and he has the look of a “now horse” as he bids for his third consecutive victory.

With John Velazquez riding him back, Bob Baffert's Eight Rings, who went to the front in the opening day San Antonio and nearly dead heated with Hot Rod Charlie for the place while beaten a half length by Express Train, rates a big chance in what will be his 14th career start. A Grade 1 winner here at two, Eight Rings is a 5-year-old horse by Empire Maker seeking his second graded stakes win and his fourth overall.

In a dominant gate to wire performance, trainer George Papaprodromou's American Theorem took a second condition allowance at a mile an one sixteenth by 2 ¼ lengths over Shooter's Shoot on Jan 2 and was flattered by the fact the runner-up came back to post a big second here in Saturday's G3 Palos Verdes Stakes.

San Pasqual Entries

Sunday

7:12 p.m. – G3 Robert B. Lewis Stakes at Santa Anita

Second at 1-2 in his most recent stakes assignment, Messier will be out to make amends and stamp himself an “A-List” Derby hopeful as he heads a field of five sophomores going 1 1/16 miles in Sunday's Grade 3, $200,000 Robert B. Lewis Stakes at Santa Anita.

An important prep on the road to both the Santa Anita and Kentucky Derbies, the Lewis will provide the winner with 10 Kentucky Derby qualifying points and the second, third and fourth place finishers with four, two and one point respectively. However, the Bob Baffert-trained colt is not eligible for those points due to Churchill Downs' ban of the Hall of Fame trainer.

Messier's primary rival certainly appears to be the Simon Callaghan-trained Sir London, who crushed four rivals in breaking his maiden by 10 lengths as the 1-5 favorite on Dec. 4 at Los Alamitos. Second in a pair of maiden sprints on Oct. 3 at Santa Anita and Nov. 13 at Del Mar, Sir London led every step of the way in breaking his maiden at a flat mile Dec. 4 and seems very well spotted in Saturday's Lewis as he retains the services of Flavien Prat.
