Weekend Lineup Presented By Sky Racing World: Derby Points At Tampa, Big Oaklawn Match-Up

The lone race on the Road to the Kentucky Derby Championship Series over the next two weeks, Saturday's Grade 3 Tampa Bay Derby offers 50 points toward a spot in the starting gate on the first Saturday in May. A full field of 12 has been entered, headlined by dominant allowance winner Tapit Trice for trainer Todd Pletcher.

The Tampa Bay Derby is one of five stakes worth a combined $1 million in purse money Saturday at Tampa. Also on tap are the 25th running of the G2, $225,000 Hillsborough Stakes; the G3, $200,000 Florida Oaks; the G3, $100,000 Challenger Stakes; and $75,000 Columbia Stakes. The five stakes races comprise an additional 50-cent Pick 5 wagering opportunity on the seventh through 11th races..

A pair of top distaffers will make their 2023 debuts on Saturday at Oaklawn Park: Millionaire Grade 1 winners Clairiere and Secret Oath are among eight horses entered in the $350,000 Azeri Stakes. Both are unraced since finishing third and fifth, respectively, in the Breeders' Cup Distaff.

One Grade 1 race will be held this weekend, the Beholder Mile at Santa Anita Park. G1 winner Fun to Dream heads a field of eight, but faces two out-of-town shippers in Pauline's Pearl and A Mo Reay.

Other significant stakes action around the country on Saturday includes the G3 Hurricane Bertie Stakes and Captiva Island Stakes at Gulfstream Park; the G3 San Carlos Stakes at Santa Anita Park; the Phoenix Gold Cup card at Turf Paradise; the Correction Stakes at Aqueduct; and the Allen Black Cat LaCombe Memorial Stakes at Fair Grounds.

Sunday's action includes the G3 Santa Ana Stakes at Santa Anita.

Saturday

5:15 p.m. – Grade 3 Tampa Bay Derby at Tampa Bay Downs

The 1 1/16-mile Tampa Bay Derby is a Championship Series event on the Road to the Kentucky Derby where the winner will receive 50 points in their attempt to qualify for the $3 million Kentucky Derby (G1). The second-through-fifth-place finishers will receive points on a 20-15-10-5 scale.

Dominating eight-length allowance winner Tapit Trice headlines a full field of 12 3-year-olds. Trained by Todd Pletcher, Tapit Trice began his career in New York where he broke his maiden at second asking by a neck against Gotham (G3) runner-up Slip Mahoney. Soon after that performance, Tapit Trice arrived at Pletcher's Palm Beach Downs string. In his first start in Florida, Tapit Trice demolished five rivals in a first-level allowance contest at Gulfstream Park. Tapit Trice earned a stout 99 Brisnet Speed Rating for his allowance victory, the highest last out figure of any horse in the Tampa Bay Derby. Jockey Luis Saez will make the four-hour journey from Gulfstream Park to Tampa Bay Downs for the mount and break from post No. 6.

Other talented colts that entered the Tampa Bay Derby include the $250,000 Sam F. Davis second and third place finishers Groveland and Classic Car Wash, respectively.

Groveland, owned by Godolphin and trained by Eoin Harty, has been based at Tampa Bay Downs since November and has yet to finish outside the top three positions. In the Sam F. Davis, Groveland tracked from just off the swift early pace to finish 1 ¼ lengths behind Litigate, who is targeting the $1 million TwinSpires.com Louisiana Derby (G2). Local rider Daniel Centeno will be in the irons from post 4.

Gary Barber's Classic Car Wash finished third in the Sam F. Davis and was defeated by 2 ¾ lengths at odds of 12-1. The improving son of Noble Bird broke his maiden in eye-popping fashion by 8 ½ lengths in a maiden optional $50,000 claiming event on Dec. 2 at Gulfstream Park. In his first start against winners, the Mark Casse-trained Classic Car Wash defeated six rivals in a state-bred first-level allowance contest on the Gulfstream Park Tapeta surface. Jockey Emisael Jaramillo will once again have the call on Classic Car Wash and break from post 2.

Groveland, Mikey Bananas and Zydeceaux are not early Triple Crown nominees but can become eligible with a $6,000 payment due by March 27. Lord Miles will race with blinkers off. Shesterkin will add blinkers for the first time.

Tampa Derby Entries

5:54 p.m. – Grade 2 Azeri Stakes at Oaklawn Park

Millionaire Grade 1 winners Clairiere and Secret Oath are among eight horses entered in the $350,000 Azeri Stakes (G2) for older fillies and mares at 1 1/16 miles Saturday at Oaklawn. Both are unraced since the $2 million Breeders' Cup Distaff (G1) at 1 1/8 miles Nov. 5 at Keeneland. Clairiere finished third (beaten two noses), a result that denied the daughter of Curlin an Eclipse Award as the country's champion older dirt female. Secret Oath finished fifth, beaten 5 ½ lengths by Malathaat. Like Clairiere, Secret Oath (3-year-old filly) was a finalist for an Eclipse Award in 2022.

Also entered in the Azeri are Grade 2 winner Interstatedaydream, Grade 3 winner Hidden Connection, 2022-2023 Oaklawn stakes winners Lovely Ride and Hot and Sultry, Moon Swag, another stakes winner, and Le Da Vida, a stakes winner in Chile.

Azeri Entries

7:00 p.m. – Grade 1 Beholder Mile at Santa Anita Park

A Grade 1 winner in search of her fifth consecutive win, California-bred Fun to Dream heads a field of eight older fillies and mares in Saturday's Grade 1, $500,000 Beholder Mile. By 2016 Eclipse Champion 3-year-old Colt Arrogate, Fun to Dream took the opening day G1 La Brea Stakes at seven furlongs and dominated five rivals at the same distance in taking the G2 Santa Monica Stakes on Feb. 4 in a performance that suggested she'll have no problem taking on top competition at a flat mile.

One of two prominent eastern shippers in the Beholder lineup, the Steve Asmussen-trained Pauline's Pearl, a Grade 1 winner who comes off a solid win over a muddy surface going 1 1/16 miles at Sam Houston Race Park on Jan. 28, rates a huge chance with John Velazquez taking over for the first time.

Another talented shipper with a big chance is the Brad Cox-trained A Mo Reay, who will be ridden for the first time by Flavien Prat. A 4-year-old filly by Uncle Mo, she's won two in a row, and ungraded stakes at a mile and 70 yards two starts back on Dec. 31 in New Orleans and in her first graded victory, a half length win going 1 1/16 miles in the G3 Bayakoa at Oaklawn Park Feb. 4.

Weekend Lineup Presented By Sky Racing World: Four Derby Preps Lead Busy Saturday

A quartet of key races on the Road to the Kentucky Derby will be on tap Saturday where several top contenders will take the stage, including 2-year-old Champion Forte who will make his first start of the year. Saturday's four stops on the Road to the Kentucky Derby feature three Championship Series events – the $400,000 Fountain of Youth (G2), the $400,000 San Felipe (G2), and the $300,000 Gotham (G3) – that award top five points on a 50-20-15-10-5 scale. Saturday also will close the 21-race Prep Season with the $150,000 John Battaglia Memorial (20-8-6-4-2).

The stakes-laden card from Gulfstream Park on Saturday features nine stakes races worth $1.85 million in purses, culminating in the Fountain of Youth. The Derby prep has a field of 10 headlined by Breeders' Cup Juvenile winner and Eclipse champion Forte. The dark bay son of Violence is a four-time winner and will have Irad Ortiz, Jr. aboard for trainer Todd Pletcher. His rivals include Grade 1-winning juvenile Blazing Sevens, who will also be making his first start of the year for trainer Chad Brown.

Saturday's card at Santa Anita Park also includes the $500,000 Santa Anita Handicap (G1) and the $500,000 Frank E. Kilroe Mile (G1). The former has attracted a field of 11 older horses including Proxy, a Grade 1 winner for trainer Michael Stidham. The Kilroe Mile is led by a quartet from the barn of Phil D'Amato. Meanwhile, the San Felipe has drawn a field of 11 Triple Crown hopefuls. Tim Yakteen will saddle five contenders, including Practical Move, the winner of the Los Alamitos Futurity (G2), and four formerly trained by Bob Baffert, including National Treasure, who finished third in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile (G1).

Jerome Stakes winner Lugan Knight will make his journey back to Aqueduct for trainer Michael McCarthy and headline the Gotham, facing an over-subscribed field of 14 plus one also-eligible. Scoobie Quando, a debut winner in the $125,000 Turfway Prevue Stakes, will headline an over-subscribed field of 14 3-year-olds that entered the $150,000 John Battaglia Memorial (Listed) at Turfway Park.

Other significant stakes action around the country on Saturday includes three Kentucky Oaks prep races, with the Busher at Aqueduct, the G2 Davona Dale at Gulfstream, and the Cincinnati Trophy at Turfway; a trio of $75,000 turf stakes at Fair Grounds, and two $150,000 Arkansas-bred stakes at Oaklawn.

Sunday's action includes the G3 San Simeon down the hill and the G3 Santa Ysabel, a 50-point Oaks prep, both at Santa Anita.

Saturday

4:56 p.m. – Grade 3 Gotham Stakes at Aqueduct

Lugan Knight will make his graded stakes debut for trainer Michael McCarthy in Saturday's Grade 3, $300,000 Gotham, a one-turn mile for sophomores, at Aqueduct Racetrack. The bay son of Goldencents enters from a triumphant stakes debut in the $150,000 Jerome on Jan. 7 at the Big A where he bested dual graded stakes-placed Arctic Arrogance going the Gotham distance over a good main track.

West Coast shipper Carmel Road will make his first outing for trainer Tim Yakteen on the heels of a pacesetting second-place finish in the Grade 2 Los Alamitos Futurity on Dec. 17 for Bob Baffert. Carmel Road is in search of his first stakes victory in his first try at a one-turn mile. Carmel Road's lone victory came in a dominant second-out graduation, setting the pace in a two-turn mile maiden in August at Del Mar and bounding away to an 8 3/4-length victory.

Two undefeated contenders with 4-for-4 records will make their graded stakes debuts by way of Parx Racing. Recruiter [post 14, Angel Cruz] will make the second outing of his sophomore campaign for trainer Cathal Lynch while Howgreatisnate [post 2, J.D. Acosta] makes his seasonal debut for conditioner Andrew Simoff.

Debut maiden winner Uncorrelated [post 4, Manny Franco] makes his first stakes appearance for four-time Eclipse Award-winning conditioner Chad Brown on the heels of a professional 2 1/2-length victory on Jan. 6 over a sloppy and sealed Big A main track. The son of Arrogate tracked in fourth one length off the pace under Manny Franco and pounced to the lead at the half-mile call, maintaining his advantage at each point of call and completing the six furlongs in a final time of 1:12.35. The effort garnered a 69 Beyer.

Gotham Entries

5:30 p.m. – Grade 2 San Felipe Stakes at Santa Anita

One of four former Bob Baffert trainees that will be saddled for the first time by Tim Yakteen, Hejazi heads an outstanding field of 11 sophomores going 1 1/16 miles in Saturday's $400,000 San Felipe Stakes (G2) at Santa Anita. Although as yet unproven going a route of ground, New York-bred Hejazi has been near brilliant on two occasions and with a $3.5-million price tag as a 2-year-old in training this past May, will hope to be a show-stopper in the San Felipe with Mike Smith back aboard.

Yakteen will also saddle National Treasure, who was an impressive first-out maiden winner going 6 ½ furlongs at Del Mar Sept. 3, then second in the American Pharoah and third in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile (G1) Nov. 4 at Keeneland/ The colt was most recently third, beaten one length as the 3-5 favorite by stablemate Reincarnate, going one mile in the Sham Stakes (G3) on Jan. 8 at Santa Anita.

The other two former Baffert trainees are Fort Bragg, third in the Los Al Futurity (G2), and last-out maiden winner Mr Fisk. Although Yakteen will be busy pinch hitting for Baffert four starters, he'll also be saddling Practical Move, who he sent out to a handy 3¼-length victory in the Los Alamitos Futurity (G2) on Dec. 17.

A well-beaten third as a maiden three starts back in the seven-furlong Del Mar Futurity (G1) Sept. 11, Skinner was then distanced in the American Pharoah, but was an ultra-impressive 3 ¼ length one mile maiden winner off the bench here on Feb. 12 and thus looms a major contender in Saturday's San Felipe. Trained by John Shirreffs and ridden by Victor Espinoza, Skinner was next to last early in his maiden win and rallied like an A-List Derby hopeful in his maiden score while earning a 95 Beyer Speed Figure.

With Flavien Prat back in the saddle, Richard Mandella's speedy Geaux Rocket Ride, a brilliant 5¾-length first-out maiden winner going six panels on Jan. 29 at Santa Anita, takes a giant leap on Saturday in what will be only his second start.

5:43 p.m. – Grade 2 Fountain of Youth Stakes at Gulfstream Park

Forte is slated to make his 3-year-old debut in Saturday's $400,000 Fountain of Youth (G2) at Gulfstream Park, seeking to build on his championship juvenile season. The son of Violence is scheduled to meet nine rivals in the 76th running of the Fountain of Youth while making his first start since clinching the 2-year-old title with a 1 ½-length victory over heavily favorite Cave Rock in the Nov. 4 Breeders' Cup Juvenile (G1) at Keeneland.

Rocket Can (Post No. 8; 8-1) enters the Fountain of Youth off a gutsy half-length victory in the Feb. 4 Holy Bull (G3) at Gulfstream. Trained by Hall of Famer Bill Mott, the son of Into Mischief raced considerably wide thorough the 1 1/16-mile Holy Bull but kicked in through the stretch to win by three-quarters of a length under Junior Alvarado in his 2023 debut.

Shadow Dragon is also scheduled to represent the Mott stable in the Fountain of Youth after closing fast to finish second in the Holy Bull, just a half-length behind Rocket Can. The New York-bred son of Army Mule had previously won his debut and finished off-the-board against state-breds at Aqueduct last fall.

Blazing Sevens, who finished fourth in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile after encountering trouble at the start, is scheduled to take on Forte again while making his 2023 debut in the Fountain of Youth. The Chad Brown-trained son of Good Magic captured the mile Champagne (G1) at Aqueduct prior to the Juvenile. Blazing Sevens won impressively at first asking at Saratoga before finishing 12 lengths behind Forte while finishing third in the Hopeful (G1).

General Jim, who recovered from early bumping to capture the seven-furlong Swale (G3) on the Holy Bull undercard, is scheduled to stretch out around two turns in the Fountain of Youth, for which he drew the No. 1 post position. The son of Into Mischief won twice and finished third in a stakes around two turns on turf in New York last year. General Jim, who lacked room while finishing fourth in his 3-year-old debut in the Jan. 1 Mucho Macho Man, raced with blinkers for the first time in the Swale.

Fountain of Youth Entries

8:00 p.m. – Grade 1 Frank E. Kilroe Mile at Santa Anita

Led by a four-horse contingent for trainer Phil D'Amato, every entrant in the nine-horse Kilroe Mile is a stakes winner with eight of those scoring at the graded level. D'Amato's quartet is comprised of Irish-bred Hong Kong Harry and Irish-bred Gold Phoenix, both of whom return from layoffs for their seasonal bows; Irish-bred Balnikhov, who most recently was second by a nose as the favorite in the G2 Mathis Mile on Dec. 26; and Masteroffoxhounds, who was second by a neck most recently in the G3 San Marcos going 1 ¼ miles on Feb. 5.

Multiple horses in the Kilroe are exiting a thrilling edition of the G3 Thunder Road on Feb. 4, including runner-up Du Jour and third-place finisher Air Force Red.

Du Jour returned from more than 14 months on the sidelines in the one-mile Thunder Road and was beaten just a nose when uncorking a furious rally under Umberto Rispoli. Trained by Bob Baffert and owned by Natalie Baffert and Debbie Lanni, Du Jour in 2021 was a graded stakes winner and also Grade 1-placed. Jockey Frankie Dettori will ride Du Jour for the first time on Saturday.

Air Force Red was up near the pace in the Thunder Road before getting edged by a neck for the top prize. Prior to that effort the 5-year-old Air Force Blue ridgling won the G2 Joe Hernandez on the downhill turf course Dec. 31. Air Force Red is trained by Leonard Powell; Santa Anita leading rider Juan Hernandez, who was aboard in both the Joe Hernandez and Thunder Road, again has the mount on Saturday.

Kilroe Entries

8:30 p.m. – Grade 1 Santa Anita Handicap at Santa Anita

Defunded and Newgrange head a field of 11 older horses going a mile and one quarter in the 86th running of the Grade 1, $500,000 Santa Anita Handicap.

Defunded was second last out, beaten 4 ½ lengths at 5-2 going a mile and one eighth in the G1 Pegasus World Cup Invitational Jan. 28 at Gulfstream Park. The Bob Baffert trainee, who in his only career try at a mile and one quarter, finished second six starts back in the G1 Hollywood Gold Cup on May 30 of last year, looms the likely favorite with leading man Juan Hernandez, who takes off of Newgrange to ride Defunded for the first time.

Phil D'Amato, a San Pedro native who was Santa Anita's leading Winter/Spring Meet trainer a year ago, will be seeking his first Big Cap win as will European legend Frankie Dettori, who climbs aboard Newgrange for the first time. Newgrange, fresh off an authoritative one-length tally over Baffert's Hopper in the mile and one eighth San Pasqual when ridden for the first time by Hernandez, was a two-time graded stakes winner last year at age three when conditioned by Baffert. Transferred to D'Amato prior to running third in the ungraded Shared Belief Stakes going a flat mile at Del Mar four starts back on Sept. 3, Newgrange put it all together in a 5 ½-length one mile allowance score here on Nov. 6, earning a career-top 97 Beyer Speed Figure. He tries a mile and a quarter for the first time in the Big 'Cap.

Although second beaten a length by Newgrange as the 7-5 favorite on Jan. 28, Baffert's Hopper had been idle since running away with the G3 Affirmed Stakes by 5 ¼ lengths on June 11 and should no doubt benefit from a recent race. A 4-year-old colt by Declaration of War out of the Caesour mare Irridescence, Hopper earned a 95 Beyer off the bench in the San Pasqual and with an abundance of natural speed, looms dangerous with Mike Smith taking over for the first time.

A winner of the G1 Clark Stakes at Churchill Downs going a mile and one eighth two starts back, trainer Michael Stidham's Proxy was most recently fifth, beaten 7 ½ lengths in the G1 Pegasus World Cup Invitational on Jan. 28 and ships west for the first time from Fair Grounds in New Orleans. Ridden by eastern-based Joel Rosario in his last three starts, Proxy will get the services of John Velazquez in the Big 'Cap.

A winner of last year's G1 Hollywood Gold Cup three starts back here on May 30, trainer Michael McCarthy's There Goes Harvard rates a big chance at a price and will be ridden for the first time by Japanese sensation Kazushi Kimura.

After finishing second by a head in last year's Big 'Cap, eastern invader Warrant will try and do one better on Saturday. Warrant prepped for his second Big Cap with an allowance win at Fair Grounds on Jan. 26. That effort followed almost seven months on the sidelines, which trainer Brad Cox said was the result of him “just being a little tired” the second half of the season. Prior to last year's Big Cap, Warrant was third in the Grade 3 Louisiana Stakes at Fair Grounds on Jan. 22.

Weekend Lineup: Derby, Oaks Points On Offer At Oaklawn

A pair of prep races for the first weekend in May are the highlight of this weekend's live racing action, both scheduled for Saturday's card at Oaklawn Park in Hot Springs, Ark. The Grade 3 Honeybee and G2 Rebel will each offer the winner 50 points on the Road to the Kentucky Oaks and the Road to the Kentucky Derby, respectively.

The Rebel drew a field of 11 3-year-olds, led by a pair of Brad Cox trainees and a recent transfer from embattled trainer Bob Baffert. Cox's entrants, Verifying and Giant Mischief, are the 2-1 and 5-2 first and second choices on the morning line. Reincarnate, winner of the G3 Sham while in Baffert's care but now entered from the barn of former Baffert assistant Tim Yakteen, is the 7-2 third choice.

A well-matched dozen will meet in the Honeybee, including the first five finishers from Oaklawn's earlier Oaks prep, the Martha Washington.

Earlier on Saturday, a field of 13 international contenders will take on the $20 million Saudi Cup. Baffert will send out a pair in search of his first win in the race, Taiba and Country Grammer, but they face a strong challenge from six Japanese entries as well as last year's winner, locally-trained Emblem Road. Perhaps the best of those is Panthalassa, the dead-heat winner of last year's G1 Dubai Turf. It may seem that a turf horse taking on the dirt would be at a disadvantage, but the King Abdulaziz dirt course has historically been extremely kind to turf runners; case-in-point, the inaugural Saudi Cup was won by European-trained turf horse Mishriff.

Other American-trained runners taking their shots in Saudi Arabia include:

  • 1351 Turf Sprint – Casa Creed (Bill Mott)
  • Saudi Derby – Havnameltdown (Baffert)
  • Riyadh Dirt Sprint – Elite Power (Mott), Gunite (Asmussen), and Meraas (Chad Summers)

Other significant stakes action around the country on Saturday includes the $100,000 Gander and $125,000 Gander Stakes at Aqueduct, the $125,000 Gulfstream Park Sprint Stakes, the $125,000 Wintergreen Stakes at Turfway Park, and a pair of $75,000 Louisiana-bred stakes at Fair Grounds.

Saturday

12:35 p.m. – Grade 1, $20 million Saudi Cup at King Abdulaziz Racetrack

The field is headed by last year's winner Emblem Road (USA), who bids to become the first horse to win the Group 1 contest more than once. He will be ridden by Panamanian Alexis Moreno, and comes into the contest after an impressive victory when last seen.

The challenge from Japan looks stronger than ever with six likely contenders, including Dubai Turf winner Panthalassa (JPN), and Jun Light Bolt (JPN), the winner of the Group 1 Champions Cup. Other runners from Japan are Cafe Pharoah (JPN), Crown Pride (JPN), Geoglyph (JPN) and Vin De Garde (JPN).

Trainer Bob Baffert will be hoping his Country Grammer (USA) can go one better than last year, while he'll also saddle Taiba (USA), the dominant winner of the Group 1 Malibu Stakes when last seen.

Saudi Cup Entries

5:43 p.m. – Grade 3, $300,000 Honeybee Stakes at Oaklawn Park

An evenly matched field of 12 is entered in the $300,000 Honeybee Stakes (G3), which will offer 100 points (50-20-15-10-5, respectively) to the top five finishers toward starting eligibility for the Kentucky Oaks.

Honeybee program favorite Grand Love will be making her first start since finishing sixth, beaten six lengths by eventual Eclipse Award winner Wonder Wheel, in the $2 million Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1) at 1 1/16 miles Nov. 4 at Keeneland. The speedy Grand Love races for her breeder, Three Chimneys Farm (Goncalo Torrealba), and Hall of Fame trainer Steve Asmussen, who is seeking his record-tying sixth Honeybee victory.

The Honeybee brings back Wet Paint, Taxed, Defining Purpose, Take Charge Briana and Olivia Twist, the 1-2-3-4-5 finishers, respectively, from the $200,000 Martha Washington Stakes at 1 1/16 miles Jan. 28. The Martha Washington was Oaklawn's first Kentucky Oaks points race.

Honeybee Entries

6:23 p.m. – Grade 2, $1 million Rebel Stakes at Oaklawn Park

A group of 11 sophomores has been entered in Saturday's Rebel Stakes, which will offer 100 points (50-20-15-10-5, respectively) to the top five finishers toward starting eligibility for the Kentucky Derby.

Trainer Brad Cox is scheduled to send out the top two program choices, Verifying and Giant Mischief.

Verifying, a half-brother to champion and multiple Oaklawn stakes winner Midnight Bisou, exits a powerful 5 ¼-length entry-level allowance victory at 1 mile Jan. 14 at Oaklawn in his 3-year-old debut. From the first crop of 2018 Triple Crown winner Justify, Verifying's time of 1:37.23 was then a meet best and the race produced two next-out winners in Gun Pilot (second) and Two Eagles River (third).

Giant Mischief will be making his first start since finishing a troubled second in the $400,000 Remington Park Springboard Mile Stakes Dec. 17 at Remington Park. A son of Into Mischief, Giant Mischief has won 2 of 3 starts after being purchased for $475,000 at the Keeneland September Yearling Sale. Giant Mischief has worked five times this year at Fair Grounds in advance of the Rebel, which has been scheduled 3-year-old debut for two months.

Reincarnate, from the first crop of champion Good Magic, has won his last two starts, including the $100,000 Sham Stakes (G3) at 1 mile Jan. 8 at Santa Anita. Reincarnate was recently transferred from Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert, who has won the Rebel a record eight times, to another Southern California-based trainer, Tim Yakteen.

Lightly raced Gun Pilot (2 for 3) makes his stakes debut for Hall of Fame trainer Steve Asmussen. After winning his career debut on Churchill Downs' Nov. 26 “Stars of Tomorrow 2” program, the son of Gun Runner finished second to Verifying in his two-turn debut. Gun Pilot returned to beat Bourbon Bash by two lengths in an entry-level allowance at one mile Feb. 4 at Oaklawn.

Asmussen is also scheduled to send out another son of Gun Runner, Red Route One, who exits a second-place finish behind unbeaten Arabian Knight in the $750,000 Southwest Stakes (G3) Jan. 28. Red Route One fell far back early in the 1 1/16-mile Southwest before rallying to finish 5 ½ lengths behind Arabian Knight in Oaklawn's second Kentucky Derby points race.

Weekend Lineup: Louisiana Derby Preview Day At Fair Grounds Features Four Graded Stakes

The highlight of this weekend's racing action is the Louisiana Derby preview day at Fair Grounds, which includes a pair of 50-point prep races on the Roads to the Kentucky Derby and the Kentucky Oaks.

A field of 14 3-year-old colts with Derby aspirations have signed on for the Grade 2 Risen Star, led by undefeated Victory Formation, winner of the Smarty Jones Stakes at Oaklawn for trainer Brad Cox. Five other Risen Star runners besides Victory Formation have already banked points: Curly Jack (17), Two Phil's (8), Angel of Empire (4), Sun Thunder (4), and Determinedly (3).

The G2 Rachel Alexandra drew a smaller field of six sophomore fillies, but two in the field enter the race with extremely high expectations. Hoosier Philly is undefeated through three starts for Tom Amoss, while Chop Chop flashed talent for the Cox barn with a second in the G1 Alcibiades but a bad trip in the Breeders' Cup left her at the rear of the field.

In total, Fair Grounds' Saturday card offers six stakes races, four graded.

Another big Saturday card is on offer at Laurel Park, with six stakes, two of which are graded. The highlight of the card is the G3 General George, led by Factor It In on a two-race win streak.

Other significant stakes action around the country on Saturday includes the $125,000 Heavenly Prize Invitational at Aqueduct, the G3 Royal Delta at Gulfstream, the G3 Razorback Handicap at Oaklawn, five $75,000 stakes for Texas-breds at Sam Houston, and the Wishing Well Stakes down the hill at Santa Anita.

Sunday's action is highlighted by the G1 February Stakes in Japan, which drew North American-based Shirl's Speight, winner of the G1 Maker's Mark Mile at Keeneland last spring. Trained by Roger Attfield, Shirl's Speight will be the first foreign entrant in the February Stakes, and faces a strong field in the one-mile dirt contest.

Saturday

5:42 p.m. – Grade 3 Razorback Handicap at Oaklawn Park

The speedy West Will Power headlines a strong field of 10 older horses entered in the $600,000 Razorback over 1 1/16 miles. West Will Power, who will be making his 2023 debut in the Razorback, has a 2-2-0 record in four starts for Cox, highlighted by a front-running 6 ¾-length victory in the $350,000 Fayette Stakes (G2) at 1 1/8 miles Oct. 29 at Keeneland. West Will Power exits a runner-up finish in the $750,000 Clark Stakes (G1) at 1 1/8 miles Nov. 25 at Churchill Downs. West Will Power was beaten three-quarters of a length by Proxy after leading throughout most of the race.

Southern California-based Ginobili returns to Oaklawn after a sparkling four-length victory in the $150,000 Fifth Season Stakes at one mile Jan. 14. The Fifth Season was the first major local two-turn prep this year for the Oaklawn Handicap.

Law Professor returns to Hot Springs after finishing ninth in last April's $400,000 Oaklawn Mile (G3) for Southern California-based trainer Michael McCarthy. Now with New York-based trainer Rob Atras, Law Professor exits a 7 ½-length victory in the $150,000 Queens County Stakes at 1 1/8 miles Jan. 7 at Aqueduct.

Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas bids for his 50th career Oaklawn stakes victory with millionaire Last Samurai and recent addition Caddo River.

In his last start, Last Samurai finished fourth, beaten seven lengths, in the $3 million Pegasus World Cup Invitational (G1) for older horses at 1 1/8 miles Jan. 28 at Gulfstream Park. Last Samurai has done his best work at Oaklawn, where he has a 2-2-0 record from seven starts and earnings of $814,700.

Caddo River, the 2021 Arkansas Derby runner-up for Arkansas lumberman John Ed Anthony's Shortleaf Stable, was transferred from Cox to Lukas following a runner-up finish in a Jan. 21 allowance race at Oaklawn. Anthony also campaigned Plainsman.

Late-running Rated R Superstar will be making his sixth appearance in the Razorback. The millionaire multiple graded stakes winner finished fifth in the last two runnings after four-time Oaklawn leading owner Danny Caldwell claimed the now-10-year-old gelding for $50,000 Jan. 30, 2021, at Oaklawn.

Razorback Entries

6:41 p.m. – Grade 2 Rachel Alexandra Stakes at Fair Grounds

After a perfect freshman campaign punctuated by her trainer Tom Amoss calling her the most promising horse he has ever trained, Hoosier Philly's time to shine has come. She is set to make her much anticipated 3-year-old debut in the Rachel Alexandra. Hoosier Philly will face a field of five rivals including Chop Chop, the runner-up in both the locally run Silverbulletday and Keeneland's Alcibiades (G1).

After winning all three of her juvenile starts, including the Golden Rod (G2) and the Rags to Riches – both by open lengths – Amoss sent Hoosier Philly for a freshening at Woodford Thoroughbreds in Florida, circling the Rachel Alexandra for Hoosier Philly's sophomore debut. When she returned to the Amoss barn, the daughter of Into Mischief (out of the Tapit mare Tapella) proceeded to fire three successive bullet workouts. Hoosier Philly has done everything a trainer could hope from a stand-out filly.

The top rival to Hoosier Philly in the Rachel Alexandra is Selective LLC's Chop Chop. A nose shy of winning the Alcibiades (G1), the City of Light filly was sent off as the favorite in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1), but after a difficult trip around Keeneland's main track under Joel Rosario, she disappointed her backers and connections, finishing last of 13. Never leaving the barn and training forwardly ahead of her 3-year-old debut in January's Silverbulletday Stakes, Chop Chop ran well enough to put 13 lengths between her and five of her foes, but she was unable to bid past stablemate The Alys Look in the stretch, and ended up finishing second. Cox has decided to add blinkers for her run in the Rachel Alexandra.

7:14 p.m. – Grade 2 Risen Star Stakes at Fair Grounds

Smarty Jones winner Victory Formation, currently eleventh on the Road to the Kentucky Derby with 10 points, headlines a full field of 14 3-year-olds for the $400,000 Risen Star Stakes (G2). Five other Risen Star runners besides Victory Formation have already banked points: Curly Jack (17), Two Phil's (8), Angel of Empire (4), Sun Thunder (4), and Determinedly (3).

After winning his first two races at sprint distances, Victory Formation was tasked with a two-turn mile in the Smarty Jones on New Year's Day at Oaklawn Park. Breaking from the outside post he took over at the front and cruised away from the field to win by three lengths. If he employs similar front-running tactics, the son of Tapwrit will have company, as four other runners in the field are proven to be sharp from the gates and keen to the lead.

Cross-entered in the Lecomte and a 3-year-old allowance on the Road to the Derby Day undercard, Tapit's Conquest went in the softer spot, but he could not bid past the winner Determinedly who slowed the pace down out front and had plenty left in the tank through the final stages to stay ahead of Tapit's Conquest's rail rally. The Tapit colt's lone win in three starts came in early October at Churchill Downs. Cox gave him time off in October before bringing him to Fair Grounds where he has posted all his morning drills. Geroux stays on and will guide Tapit's Conquest from post No. 8.

Angel of Empire finished second to his stablemate in the Smarty Jones on January 1. His two wins came at Horseshoe Indianapolis, both the first starts in his form cycle. The Classic Empire closer drew post No. 6 and will have a new pilot in Luis Saez.

Of the three colts entered by Steve Asmussen, it's the newcomer to the barn, Harlocap, who gets tabbed at 8-1, ahead of Private Creed and Silver Heist both at 12-1. The owner of Harlocap is the first to transfer their Derby-contender out of Bob Baffert's barn. Baffert is suspended from entering any race at Churchill Downs, therefore any horse in his care is disallowed from earning Derby points. Making his third start on Jan. 22, the Justify colt out of the Bodemeister dam Mezinka broke his maiden in front running fashion. Harlocap has breezed twice since and will retain the services of John Velazquez.
