Artie’s Storm Gets Second Straight Stakes Victory In Steady Growth At Woodbine

In other stakes action, Artie's Storm took the $101,200 Steady Growth, for three-year-olds and upward, contested at 1 1/16-miles on the Tapeta at Woodbine Racetrack in Toronto, Ontario.

It was the second straight stakes score for the dark bay son of We Miss Artie-Tiz Stormy Now, who came into the Steady Growth off a victory in the Lake Ontario Stakes on November 19.

“He's a lovely horse,” said winning rider David Moran. “He always tries. He's been running in tough races all year. Back-to-back stakes for him and he won going away today. I was afraid I was having to move a little soon, they went quick up front, and I just wanted to get out from behind that wall before they stopped, and he picked up and ran right through the wire.”

The winning margin was 1 ¼-lengths. Full Extreme was second, and Magical Man finished third. Argentium was scratched.

The final time was 1:44.04.

Owned and trained by Paul Buttigieg, Artie's Storm, bred by Sunrise Farm, is now 4-2-3 from 10 starts.

He paid $7.20 for the win.

Live racing resumes tomorrow – Sunday is the final day of the 2021 Woodbine Thoroughbred meet – with the first post at 12:55 p.m. The feature is the Grade 3 Valedictory Stakes.

Grade 1 Winner We Miss Artie Dies At Age 10

We Miss Artie, a Grade 1 winner and well-traveled stallion, has died at age 10, Red Feather Equine Farm in New Mexico announced Wednesday.

The son of Artie Schiller completed his first season at Red Feather Equine Farm in Tularosa earlier this year. He'd been purchased by Zachary Burtt after the horse had previously resided at Ramsey Farm in Nicholasville, Ky.

Bred in Ontario by Richard L. Lister, We Miss Artie was a $90,000 yearling purchase by Ken and Sarah Ramsey at the 2012 Keeneland September Yearling Sale. He was put in the barn of trainer Todd Pletcher, and he made an impact early with a victory in the Grade 1 Breeders' Futurity at Keeneland, at a time when the main track was synthetic.

All-weather surfaces would become We Miss Artie's specialty over the course of his career. He qualified for the 2014 Kentucky Derby after prevailing in a blanket finish over the Polytrack at Turfway Park in the G3 Spiral Stakes. He finished 10th in the Kentucky Derby, then turned his attentions to the Canadian classics.

We Miss Artie became the favorite for the Queen's Plate after a victory in the Plate Trial Stakes at Woodbine. However, he underwhelmed in the classic race, finishing fourth to the filly Lexie Lou. An injury ended his career after the Queen's Plate, and he was retired to Colebrook Farms Stallion Station in Ontario for the 2016 breeding season. He'd later be relocated to Ramsey Farm before selling at the 2020 Keeneland November breeding stock sale for $6,500.

From three crops of racing age, We Miss Artie has sired 16 winners and accumulated progeny earnings of $1.1 million.

His best runner is Artie's Princess, who was named Canada's champion female sprinter of 2020, on a campaign that included wins in the G2 Bessarabian Stakes and listed Ruling Angel Stakes. Other stakes winners by We Miss Artie include Chasing Artie and Whatmakessammyrun.

Artie’s Princess Holds Off Boardroom For Bessarabian Success

Artie's Princess, a 3-year-old daughter of We Miss Artie, won her second straight stakes at Woodbine, and notched her first graded crown, in taking the $197,750 Bessarabian (Grade 2) at the Toronto, Ontario, oval on Saturday.

The trio of Jakarta, Souper Escape and Artie's Princess zipped out of the gate in the seven-furlong Bessarabian, matching strides through an opening-quarter mile in a swift :22.31. It was Jakarta who eventually assumed command with her other two rivals tracking her every move. Artie's Princess, who came into the race off a sharp score in the Ruling Angel Stakes on September 12, sat in third for Kazushi Kimura.

Jakarta continued to call the shots on the front end, taking her rivals through a half-mile clip in :44.41, as Princess Artie kept the pacesetter well within her sights.

As the field turned for home, Artie's Princess surged to the lead, holding a two-length advantage at Robert Geller's stretch call. Looking like a lock mid-way down the lane, the Wesley Ward trainee had to fend off a late-race meeting with hard-charging Boardroom, who fell a head short of collaring the winner. Our Secret Agent rallied to net third, while Amalfi Coast, last year's Bessarabian champ, finished fourth.

“Basically, if I could go to the front I wanted to go to the front, but I knew that just the two horses wanted to go to the front, and it looked a little bit fast that's why I was just patient, watched from behind,” said Kimura, who earlier in the card teamed with Field Pass to take the Grade 3 Ontario Derby Stakes. “She was just so comfortable today.”

The final time was 1:20.90.

“I felt [jockey Luis Contreras and Boardroom coming] but she wasn't that tired and kept going,” offered Kimura. “I felt I could win.”

The ultra-consistent filly, bred and owned by Ken and Sarah Ramsey, now has three wins from four outings in 2020. Last year, the Ontario-bred went 2-1-0 from three starts, taking her first two races before a runner-up effort in the Frost King Stakes in November.

Her sire, We Miss Artie, also owned by Ken and Sarah Ramsey, won the 2014 Plate Trial at Woodbine before finishing third in the Queen's Plate.

Sent off as the 5-2 choice, Artie's Princess paid $7, $3.80 and $3.30. She combined with Boardroom ($5, $3.90) for a 4-2 $34.40 exactor. Our Secret Agent ($4.30) completed a 4-2-7 triactor worth $156.90. Amalfi Coast rounded a 4-2-7-5 $1 Superfecta that returned $277.35. Outburst was scratched.
