Oaks Heroine Tuesday To Skip Irish Classic

Eight fillies will head postward for Saturday's G1 Juddmonte Irish Oaks following Thursday morning's confirmation of final declarations for the €500,000 Classic. The Co. Kildare venue will be denied the opportunity of a rematch between Epsom's G1 Oaks first and second, Tuesday (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and Emily Upjohn (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}), with the former being the highest-profile absentee from the select field. Aidan O'Brien will instead rely on Toy (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}, who is set to partnered by Ryan Moore, Wayne Lordan's mount History (Ire) (Galileo {Ire} and the Seamus Heffernan-piloted Emily Dickinson (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}). They have been allocated stalls six, seven and two, respectively. John and Thady Gosden trainee and 'TDN Rising Star' Emily Upjohn, who is rated an odds-on chance to regain her winning thread, will have Frankie Dettori in the plate and has drawn gate four. Zhang Yuesheng's G2 Ribblesdale S. victrix Magical Lagoon (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) has been drawn on the outside in gate eight.

Caravaggio’s Galleria Borghese Takes The Oaks Trial

Stepping up to a mile and a quarter for the first time, Ballydoyle's Galleria Borghese (Ire) (Caravaggio–On Ice {Ire}, by Galileo {Ire}) showed the extra stamina requirement held no fears when making all to capture Wednesday's Listed Al Shira'aa Racing Irish EBF Naas Oaks Trial at Naas. Sent straight to the front by Wayne Lordan, the 12-1 shot who had been second at Limerick five days earlier showed resilience to hold Alizarine (GB) (Sea the Moon {Ger}) by half a length, with the strong-finishing Seisai (Ire) (Gleneagles {Ire}) a nose away in third. “She's been coming forward all year, improving from run to run–her last run in Limerick was a good step forward and she made the step up again today,” Lordan commented. “She got the mile and a quarter well and tries hard.”

Kept busy since making her debut in early April, Galleria Borghese was off the mark at the third attempt over a mile here May 15 before finishing second under a big weight in a seven-furlong Listowel handicap June 5. Beaten 1 1/4 lengths by Moyglare's smart Trevaunance (Ire) (Muhaarar {GB}) attempting to give that rival three pounds in Limerick's Ballyduane Stud Fillies Race 12 days later, she showed with this display how much the yard's fillies can thrive on a taxing campaign.

Galleria Borghese is the first foal out of an unraced full-sister to the G1 Racing Post Trophy hero Kingsbarns (Ire) and a half to the GIII Senorita S. scorer Sweeter Still (Ire) (Rock of Gibraltar {Ire}), who in turn produced the G1 2000 Guineas and G1 Futurity Trophy winner Kameko (Kitten's Joy). She is also a half to the G3 Derrinstown Stud 1000 Guineas Trial winner Belle Artiste (Ire) (Namid {GB}) and a full-sibling of Elizabethofaragon (Ire) who was third in the Listed Trigo S. Her second foal is yearling colt by Ten Sovereigns (Ire), while she also has a filly foal by Wootton Bassett (GB).

No Nay Never’s Meditate Ascot Bound After G3 Fillies Sprint Success

Coolmore and Westerberg's hitherto unbeaten 2-year-old filly Meditate (Ire) (No Nay Never–Pembina {Ire}, by Dalakhani {Ire}) impressed with a 3 1/4-length debut tally tackling five furlongs at the Curragh last month and was equally adept over the six-furlong strip at Naas to secure Sunday's G3 Coolmore Stud Irish EBF Fillies Sprint S. en route to next month's G3 Albany S. at Royal Ascot. Positioned in a close second after the initial strides, the 2-1 joint-favourite loomed large passing the quarter-mile marker and came under a late drive to assert superiority nearing the line for a career high on stakes bow. Joint-favourite Matilda Picotte (Ire) (Sioux Nation) attempted to wire the field, but was swamped for the minors in the dying strides and ran fourth. Comhra (Ire) (Vocalised) closed with a rattle to finish 1 1/4 lengths off the winner in second, a neck ahead of It's Showtime Baby (GB) (Showcasing {GB}).

“She's very laid back at home, so she's a hard filly to get a read on, and I'm delighted with her,” said Aidan O'Brien. “She won very nicely at the Curragh, she stepped up in distance here and Wayne [Lordan] was delighted with her today. The Sioux Nation filly [Matilda Picotte] went a good gallop, she was good at the Curragh, and we thought she was going to be a big danger. We were delighted that she was able to pick her up, but we weren't sure that would happen and six furlongs obviously suited her. We were hoping to come here and, if everything went well, then have a look at the [G3] Albany with her. We think that's what we'll do, obviously we'll talk to the lads, but I think that's the route she'll be going.”

Meditate, who becomes the 19th pattern-race winner for sire (by Scat Daddy), is the latest of four foals and one of two scorers for Pembina (Ire) (Dalakhani {Ire}), who is a winning daughter of Listed Prix Imprudence victrix Mahalia (Ire) (Danehill). Mahalia's eight winners include G3 Prix Quincey-winning sire Johnny Barnes (Ire) (Acclamation {GB}) and G3 Prix de Flore victrix Albisola (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}). Mahalia is kin to five black-type performers, headed by G3 Prix Gontaut-Biron victor Muroto (GB) (Busted {GB}), and to the stakes-placed dam of G2 Premio Ellington victor and G1 Gran Premio del Jockey Club third Ivan Luis (Fr) (Lycius). She is also the ancestress of G1 Criterium International and GI Joe Hirsch Turf Classic hero Ectot (GB) (Hurricane Run {Ire}), G1 St James's Palace S.-winning sire Most Improved (Ire) and the GSW trio of Lismore (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}), Thikriyaat (Ire) (Azamour {Ire}) and Daban (Ire) (Acclamation {GB}).

Galileo’s Martinstown A New Rising Star

After Aidan O'Brien had taken Chester by storm to an even greater extent than usual, the Rosegreen purple patch continued apace at Cork on Friday evening when the closing race saw a TDN Rising Star performance by the newcomer Martinstown (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}). Named after J P McManus's famous Co. Limerick establishment, the May-foaled bay carries the colours of his daughter Sue Ann Foley who owns him in partnership with Susan Magnier and Michael Tabor and with his title there was an air of expectation surrounding his debut under Wayne Lordan. Slowly away and a touch free early in the 10-furlong Irish Stallion Farms EBF Maiden despite being found cover against the rail, the 5-1 shot followed the front trio into the straight and needed to be switched out to deliver his challenge approaching the two-furlong pole. Gradually reeling in his experienced peers, the son of the Listed Salsabil S. winner Alive Alive Oh (GB) (Duke of Marmalade {Ire}) gave a final surge to overwhelm Point Gellibrand (Ire) (Camelot {GB}) close home and prevail by half a length, with Flying Dolphin (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}) the same margin back in third.

Aidan O'Brien is in no rush with the full-brother to last year's impressive G2 Park Hill S. scorer Free Wind (GB), despite the fact that he is engaged in the Derby at present. “He is lovely,” he said. “We are delighted with him, he is a lovely big horse and is still a baby. It took him halfway down the straight to get going and Wayne gave him a lovely ride and we think he will stay further. He was big, so we didn't like to force him but has a lovely cruise to him. We were trying to give him as much time as we can and J.P. and Sue-Ann said to take our time with him. We might look for a winners' race, a conditions race, or maybe a handicap.”

Martinstown is the third foal out of Alive Alive Oh, who was also third in the G3 Dance Design Fillies S. Her second is the aforementioned Free Wind, who was also a late-starter who went places fast last term, capturing the G3 Prix Minerve before her seven-length Park Hill romp. Fittingly, the second dam Higher Love (Ire) (Sadler's Wells) reached her career crescendo with a second-place finish in the Listed Cheshire Oaks which started Ballydoyle's flawless Chester May meeting on Wednesday and also produced the G3 Fukushima Kinen and G3 Tanabata Sho winner Crescendo Love (Jpn) (Stay Gold {Jpn}). Also related to the stable's 1000 Guineas heroine Virginia Waters (Kingmambo) and sire Chevalier (Ire) (Danehill), her yearling is a full-brother to the winner and Free Wind.
