Frankel Colt Gets Rising Star Tag In Chantilly Debut

Hot on the heels of Gran Sabana (Ire) (Kingman {GB}) earning a 'TDN Rising Star' rosette in Friday's opening contest at Chantilly, the Fabrice Chappet-trained $535,000 Ocala April breeze-up graduate Onesto (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) earned one of his own with a dominant performance in the one-mile Prix de Villebon for unraced 2-year-old colts and geldings. The 15-2 chance was keen under attempted restraint during the opening exchanges and raced in rear for the most part. Making smooth headway once angled to the outside in the straight, he quickened in impressive fashion to launch his challenge with 300 metres remaining and kept on powerfully under minimal urging inside the final furlong to easily outpoint Badge (GB) (Galileo {Ire}), himself a half-brother to G1 Coronation S. third Jubiloso (GB) (Shamardal), by 2 1/2 lengths.

“The horse came from the [Ocala] breeze-up sales in America and he only came over here in June so has not been with us for that long,” explained Chappet. “At this stage in his behaviour, he still acts more like an American-trained colt than a European-trained colt. He broke slowly, he was keen early on and he was green also, but the way in which he swallowed all the other runners in the straight was really quite impressive. It is not certain he'll run again this season. I don't want to run him on ground that is too soft so the circumstances will decide what we do from here.”

Onesto is the second of four foals and first scorer produced by an unraced sibling of G3 Easter Cup victor Jet Away (GB) (Cape Cross {Ire}). The February-foaled chestnut is half to a yearling filly by Australia (GB) and a weanling filly by Gleneagles (Ire). His dam Onshore (GB) (Sea the Stars {Ire}), who was acquired by Diamond Creek Farm for 320,000gns as Tattersalls' 2016 December Mares sale, was bred to American Pharoah this year. She is a daughter of Kalima (GB) (Kahyasi {Ire}), herself an unraced full-sister to Juddmonte's Listed Prix des Sablonnets-winning blue hen Hasili (Ire).

Nyquist Filly Tops OBS June Sale’s Second Session

Hip No. 543, a daughter of Nyquist consigned by Eddie Woods, Agent, went to Sweetwater Trading Co., Agent for Rockingham Ranch, for $420,000 to top the second session of the Ocala Breeders' Sales Company's 2021 June Sale of 2-Year-Olds and Horses of Racing Age.

The chestnut filly, who breezed an eighth in :10 1/5 at Friday's Under Tack session, is out of stakes winner Midnight Ballet, by Midnight Lute, a half sister to champion Jala Jala (MEX).

Hip No. 418, a daughter of Dialed In consigned by Wavertree Stables, Inc, (Ciaran Dunne), Agent, was sold to Alistair Roden Bloodstock for $350,000. The dark bay or brown filly, who breezed an Under Tack quarter in :21 1/5 on Friday, is a half sister to graded stakes winning OBS graduate Anothertwistafate out of Imprecation, by First Defense.

Karl and Cathi Glassman went to $335,000 for Hip No. 506, a son of Hard Spun who worked an eighth in :10 3/5 at Friday's Under Tack Session. Consigned by Eisaman Equine, Agent, the bay colt is out of Lovisa, by Speightstown, a half sister to graded stakes placed stakes winner Poupee Flash.

Hip No. 319, a son of Quality Road consigned by de Meric Sales, Agent, was sold to Steven W. Young, Agent, for $280,000. The bay colt, who breezed an eighth in :10 flat on Thursday, is a half brother to stakes placed Burger and Fries (FR) out of Figarie, by Bernardini, a daughter of champion Flanders.

Hip No. 447, a daughter of Frosted consigned by Top Line Sales LLC, Agent, who turned in the Friday Under Tack session's fastest eighth in :9 4/5, was sold to John Ballantyne / N B S Stable for $250,000. The gray or roan filly is out of graded stakes winner Jody Slew, a half sister to stakes winner Cape of Bradford.

Larry Zap, Agent for Mike Mellen, went to $240,000 for Hip No. 623, a son of Ghostzapper consigned by Coastal Equine LLC (Jesse Hoppel), Agent, who turned in an Under Tack quarter on Saturday in :21 1/5. The bay colt is out of stakes winner Pacific Heat, by Unusual Heat, a half sister to graded stakes placed stakes winner Long Hot Summer.

Hip No. 487, a daughter of Liam's Map consigned by Coastal Equine LLC (Jesse Hoppel), Agent, was purchased for $230,000 by Mitch Weaver. The gray or roan filly, who turned in an Under Tack quarter in :21 2/5 on Friday, is out of Let It Snow, by Tapit, a half sister to stakes winner Eagle Orb.

Hip No. 596, a son of Klimt consigned by Scanlon Training & Sales, Agent, was sold to James Divito, Agent, for $225,000. The bay colt, who worked an eighth in :10 1/5 at Saturday's Under Tack session, is a half brother to graded stakes placed stakes winning OBS graduate Mo d'Amour out of Neverthesame, by Scat Daddy.

Oracle Bloodstock, Agent went to $220,000 for Hip No. 413, a daughter of Practical Joke consigned by de Meric Sales, Agent. The chestnut filly, a half sister to graded stakes placed stakes winner American Sugar out of I Love America, by Quiet American, breezed an eighth in :10 1/5 at Friday's Under Tack session.

For the session, 191 horses grossed $8,149,600, compared with 173 selling for a total of $4,357,800 at last year's second session. The average was $42,668 up 69.4 percent compared with $25,190 a year ago, while the median price was $17,000, up 38.5 percent compared to $13,000 in 2021. The buyback percentage was 22 percent; it was 18.8 percent last year.

The June Sale concludes Friday, beginning at 10:30 a.m. Hip No.'s 633 – 927 will be offered.

Bullet Work for Quality Road Colt at OBS Sunday

A colt by Quality Road (hip 856) turned in the fastest furlong work of Sunday's final session of the under-tack show for next week's Ocala Breeders' Sales Company's June Sale of 2-Year-Olds when he became the third juvenile of the show to work in :9 4/5. The bay is consigned by McKathan Bros. Sales, agent, on behalf of breeders Fred Hertrich, III and John Fielding.

“He's been fast all year and I thought he'd go fast today. He held up his end of the bargain,” said consignor Kevin McKathan.

The colt, who RNA'd for $100,000 at last year's Keeneland September sale, is out of graded-placed Tulira's Star (Congrats), a half-sister to graded winner Mountain General (Mountain Cat).

“He is a really, really pretty colt,” McKathan said of the youngster. “He's medium-sized, which I think you get with a Quality Road. But he's a really pretty horse on the end of the shank. He looks plenty fast and hopefully the pedigree will carry him on out.”

Three horses shared Sunday's fastest quarter-mile work of :20 4/5.

A colt by Quality Road (hip 816) out of stakes winner Surfside Tiara (Scat Daddy) worked in :20 4/5 for de Meric Sales. Bred by Bridlewood Farm, the bay worked a furlong in :10 flat before RNA'ing for $400,000 at the Fasig-Tipton Gulfstream Sale in March.

A colt by Distorted Humor (hip 827) worked in :20 4/5 for Top Line Sales. The bay is out of stakes-placed Tally Ho Dixie (Dixieland Band) and is a half to stakes winner and graded placed Kyriaki (Scat Daddy). Purchased by Phantom Bloodstock for $80,000 at last year's Keeneland January sale, the juvenile RNA'd for $95,000 following a :10 2/5 work at the Fasig-Tipton Gulfstream sale.

A son of first-crop sire Practical Joke (hip 835) worked in :20 4/5 for Wavertree Stables. Out of Tessie Flip (Grand Slam), the dark bay is a half-brother to stakes winner and graded placed Jo Jo Air (Scat Daddy). He was purchased by Ron Fein's Superfine Farms for $225,000 at last year's Keeneland September sale.

Through five sessions, three horses shared the fastest furlong breeze time of :9 4/5. A filly by Shackleford turned in the fastest quarter-mile work of :20 3/5 and four shared the second fastest quarter-mile time of :20 4/5. A filly by Neolithic (hip 344) turned in the week's fastest three-furlong drill of :32 4/5.

“As usual this track is tougher later in the day,” McKathan said of conditions during the week. “As it heats up, it gets a little tougher to get over. But I do think that it helped to shorten the days and get started earlier. It felt fair, as fair as they could be. Obviously, if you're going out in the first set, you felt better about it then leading them out there in the end. But really, horses were breezing well throughout the day, so it was hard to gripe too much about it.”

The June sale brings the curtain down on what has been a very strong 2-year-old sales season.

“I think all of the sales have been so competitive, it feels like a lot of people are still unable to get the top-quality horses anyway,” McKathan said. “You had to get in there and really fight for them. I think, as always, the higher-end horses will be well shopped and then hopefully, the market holds right through. I think it's been a great year and everyone has been kind of excited to get back at it or at least get everything back on a regular time frame. We are hoping to get that middle market held up better here, we'll see what we get. But I believe the market will be good.”

The OBS June sale will be held Wednesday through Friday. Bidding begins each day at 10:30 a.m.

Midnight Storm Filly Fastest At OBS June Under Tack Opener

Hip No. 107, a daughter of Midnight Storm consigned by Scanlon Training & Sales, Agent, worked an eighth in :9 4/5 to post the fastest work at the distance at the opening session of the Under Tack Show for Ocala Breeders' Sales Company's 2021 June Sale of 2-Year-Olds and Horses of Racing Age.

The bay filly is a half sister to stakes winner Miss My Rose out of Ava G, by Afternoon Deelites, from the family of Grade 1-placed stakes winner Winter Treasure.

A pair of youngsters shared honors for the session's fastest quarter, stopping the timer in :21 1/5.

Hip No. 5, a chestnut filly by Uncaptured consigned by Ocala Stud, is a half sister to stakes winning OBS graduate Seismic Jolt out of Valid Concorde, by Concorde's Tune, a full sister to stakes winning OBS graduate Rocky River.
Hip No. 18, a bay colt by Candy Ride (ARG) consigned by Wavertree Stables, Inc, (Ciaran Dunne), Agent, is out of Viva Malala, by Malibu Moon, a half sister to Grade 1-placed stakes-winning OBS graduate Icabad Crane.
