Shackleford Filly Tops OBS July Sale’s Opening Session

Hip No. 15, Shack's Lil Mishap, a daughter of Shackleford consigned by Coastal Equine LLC (Jesse Hoppel), Agent, went to Donato Lanni, Agent, for $375,000 to top the first session of the Ocala Breeders' Sales Company's 2020 July Sale of 2-Year-Olds and Horses of Racing Age.

The bay filly, whose quarter in :20 4/5 seconds was the fastest work at the distance at Monday's under tack session, is out of Peace Queen, by Indian Charlie, a half sister to graded stakes winner Tizaqueena.

Patrice Miller, EQB, Inc., Agent, paid $350,000 for Hip No. 115, a daughter of Malibu Moon, whose eighth in :10 flat was co-fastest at the distance at Monday's under tack session. Consigned by Wavertree Stables, Inc., (Ciaran Dunne), Agent, the chestnut filly is out of Samsational, by Unbridled's Song, a half-sister to Grade 1 winner I Want Revenge.
Hip No. 200, a son of Honor Code consigned by Dark Star Thoroughbreds (Stori Atchison), Agent, was purchased by Speedway Stable for $340,000. The dark bay or brown colt, who breezed a quarter in :21 2/5 on Tuesday, is a half-brother to stakes winner Wake Up Nick out of Storm Hearted, by Lion Hearted.

Hip No. 103, a son of Not This Time consigned by Ocala Stud, was sold to Breeze Easy LLC for $250,000. The half-brother to stakes winner Softly Lit, who worked a quarter on Monday in :21 1/5, is out of Running Creek, by Cape Town, a daughter of graded stakes winner Palliser Bay.
Hip No. 331, a daughter of Kantharos consigned by de Meric Sales, Agent, went to Parker Place Racing for $220,000. The chestnut filly, who breezed an eighth in :10 flat on Tuesday, is out of stakes winner Wildcat Heiress, by Wildcat Heir, a half-sister to stakes winner Babaganush.
Hip No. 158, a daughter of Medaglia d'Oro consigned by All In Line Stables, Agent, was sold to Joseph Brocklebank, Agent, for $200,000. The dark bay or brown filly, who turned in an under tack quarter on Monday in :21 2/5, is out of Sigurwana, by Arch, a half-sister to stakes winner Token of Love (GB).
J. Stable LLC paid $170,000 for Hip No. 228, a daughter of Flatter who breezed an eighth in :10 1/5 on Tuesday. The chestnut filly, consigned by de Meric Sales, Agent, is out of Sweet Carrie, by Sidney's Candy, a half-sister to Grade 1 winner The Factor.
Hip No. 342, a son of Cairo Prince consigned by Eddie Woods, Agent, brought $150,000, going to Carolyn Wilson. The gray or roan colt, who breezed an eighth in :10 1/5 on Tuesday, is out of Written Request, by Arch, a daughter of stakes winner Petition the Lady.

For the session, 147 horses grossed $4,788,800, compared with 204 selling for a total of $6,119,500 at last year's first session. The average was $32,577 compared with $29,998 a year ago, while the median price was $13,000, compared to $17,500 in 2019. The buyback percentage was 32.6 percent; it was 22.4 percent last year.

The July Sale continues Wednesday at 10 a.m. Hip No.'s 361 – 720 will be offered.

Shackleford Filly Sets Quarter-Mile Mark at OBS Breeze Show Monday

The six-session under-tack show for next week’s Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company’s July 2-Year-Olds and Horses of Racing Age Sale began Monday and, with temperatures quickly rising into the upper 80’s, the day’s last of three sets was twice delayed as fierce rainstorms swept through the area.

A filly by Shackleford (hip 15), working early in the day’s first set, turned in the session’s fastest quarter-mile time of :20 4/5. Consigned by Jesse Hoppel’s Coastal Equine, the bay filly is out of Peace Queen (Indian Charlie), a half-sister to multiple graded stakes winner Tizaqueena (Tiznow).

“We expected her to be a very fast horse,” Hoppel said. “I didn’t know if she’d be the fastest horse breezing today, but I knew she would be right up there.”

Hoppel continued, “She is a big, classy-looking filly. She doesn’t have any vices about her, physically or mentally. She is a horse you can count on. So leading her up there, we expected her to breeze well and she did.”

The consignor said he was happy with the track conditions at OBS Monday.

“The track was a slow track today, but the slow tracks let horses separate themselves more,” Hoppel said. “A fast track will speed up a slow horse, but not necessarily help a fast horse.”

Hoppel is consigning the youngster on behalf of New York breeder James Doyle, brother of KatieRich Farm owner Larry Doyle. James Doyle, who purchased Peace Queen for $10,000 at the 2013 Fasig-Tipton New York Mixed Sale, currently has just two broodmares. Also through Coastal Equine, he will be offering a filly by Dialed In out of a granddaughter of Inside Information (Private Account) (hip 542) who is scheduled to work Thursday.

“I am lucky my brother has a great operation down there, so many times I drop them in New York and then they go to KatieRich for some kindergarten training in Kentucky,” Doyle said. “And I kind of draft on him a little bit.”

Asked if it was his brother who led him into racing, Doyle said with a laugh, “It was just the other way around. He blames me.”

Of his Shackleford filly, Doyle said, “She has just been a joy since the day she hit the ground. She has size and she’s obviously fast. The mare is a great Darley mare and Jesse Hoppel has just done an outstanding job with her.”

As for how the juvenile ended up at the 2-year-old sales, Doyle laughed again and said, “I forgot to put her in a yearling sale–how about that?”

Six juveniles shared the day’s fastest furlong time of :10 flat.

A colt by Ride on Curlin (hip 66) was first to work the co-fastest :10 flat time Monday. Consigned by Grassroots Training and Sales, the dark bay is out of Rated Xtreme (Magna Graduate), a full-sister to graded winner Blueeysintherein. He was purchased by Grassroots for $11,000 at last year’s OBS October Yearling Sale.

A colt by Race Day (hip 27) went the furlong in :10 flat for consignor Bobby Dodd. He is out of Pistolpackinsenora (Closing Argument). Also from Dodd’s consignment, hip 143, a filly by Tale of Ekati, worked in :10 flat. The bay is out of Shelby’s Song (Songandaprayer). Both juveniles were bred by Misty and Brad Grady.

Hip 49, a daughter of Into Mischief, went in :10 flat. Consigned by Brick City Thoroughbreds, the bay filly is out of graded stakes winner Prospective Saint (Saint Ballado) and is a half-sister to graded placed Island Saint (Speightstown). Bred by Mulholland Springs, the juvenile RNA’d for $170,000 at the OBS March sale following a :10 2/5 work earlier this year.

A daughter of Frosted (hip 82) worked in :10 flat for consignor Eddie Woods. The bay filly is out of the unraced Ride to Houston (Candy Ride {Arg}), a half-sister to multiple graded stakes winner Runway Model (Petionville), who is the dam of Grade I winner McKinzie (Street Sense). Bred by Whisper Hill Farm, she RNA’d for $275,000 at last year’s Fasig-Tipton Saratoga sale.

From the Wavertree Stables consignment, a filly by Malibu Moon (hip 115) went in :10 flat Monday morning. The chestnut it out of Samsational (Unbridled’s Song), an unraced half-sister to Grade I winner I Want Revenge (Stephen Got Even). She was purchased by Joe Minor’s JSM Equine for $125,000 at last year’s Fasig-Tipton October Yearling Sale.

The last of the bullet workers went to the track shortly before 10 a.m. and the day’s final set was delayed twice for about 20 minutes between 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.

“The later part of the day, the weather affected conditions,” Hoppel said. “I don’t know how it affected the track itself. The last page of the breeze show was riddled with a lot of scratches, so there weren’t as many horses who had to deal with the weather later in the day. Early in the day, down here this time of year, it gets hot pretty fast. So we just do everything we can to help these horses be as happy as they can be and of course help ourselves-it’s hot for us, too.”

The first session of the under tack show was lightly attended, but Hoppel noted it’s a long time to sale time.

“It’s a six-day breeze show and it’s hot,” he said. “I think OBS does a good job of putting these videos online and now incorporating walking videos. I think a lot of people are going to be doing their homework and getting their notes off the tougher individuals who are sitting on the turn, possibly. So I think right now, with the six-day breeze show, it’s too early to tell what the attendance is going to be like here. I think for a filly like [hip 15], there are going to be people looking for good horses like that. The other levels, I don’t know what parties are scheduled to attend, but the more the merrier.”

The under tack show continues through Saturday with sessions beginning daily at 7:30 a.m. The July sale will be held next Tuesday through Thursday with bidding commencing at 10 a.m.

Strong Returns, Seven-Figure Sale Topper For Fifth Consecutive Year at Fasig-Tipton Midlantic 2-Year-Olds In Training Sale

The Fasig-Tipton Midlantic 2-Year-Olds in Training Sale conducted another strong session on Tuesday to close the 2020 edition of the sale. For the fifth consecutive year, a seven-figure juvenile topped the Timonium, Md., sale.

The sale-topper came during Monday's session, when Hip 118, a colt by record-breaking champion freshman sire Uncle Mo sold for $1.1 million to Donato Lanni, agent for Michael Lund Petersen. The dark bay or brown colt was consigned by Pike Racing, agent. Hip 118 worked an eighth in :10-flat during last week's under tack show. The Virginia-bred 2-year-old is a half-brother to Grade 2 winner Azar out of a winning Mineshaft half-sister to multiple graded stakes winner Woodlander.

A colt by Candy Ride topped the sale's Tuesday session when sold for $875,000 to Gary Young, agent. Offered as Hip 443 by Ciaran Dunne's Wavertree Stables, the bay colt worked an eighth in :10 1/5 seconds during the under tack show. The session-topper is out of the winning Giant's Causeway mare Causara, a daughter of graded stakes winner Lady Belsara.

The sale's top-priced filly sold early during the first session, when a daughter of leading sire Into Mischief sold to Lauren Carlisle, agent for $500,000. Offered as Hip 4 by Hoby and Layna Kight, the bay filly worked a quarter in :21 3/5 seconds during the under tack show. The top filly is out of the graded stakes placed Dixie Chatter mare Global Hottie, from the immediate family of Horse of the Year Alysheba.

Hip 451, a daughter of last year's leading first-crop sire American Pharoah, was the highest-priced filly of Tuesday's session. The dark bay or brown filly was purchased for $325,000 by Speedway Stable from the consignment of Kirkwood Stables, agent for Midway Gallop LLC (video). The New York-bred filly worked a quarter in :22-flat during last week's under tack show. Hip 451 is out of a half-sister to Grade 1 winner and stakes producer Awesome Humor and to Surf Club, dam of Grade 1 winner Emcee and Baffled, who produced current leading second-crop sire Constitution.

Overall, 303 horses sold for a total of $23,572,500, good for an average of $77,797 and a median of $40,000. The sale marked the first time online bidding was available at a Fasig-Tipton auction; more than 50 horses received online bids, and approximately 15 were sold online.

Wicked Strong Colt Leads Third Fasig-Tipton Midlantic Under Tack Session

The third and final session of the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic 2-Year-Olds In Training Sale's under tack show was highlighted on Friday by a Wicked Strong colt who covered a quarter-mile in :21 1/5 seconds.

The chestnut colt, offered as Hip 512, is the second foal out of the winning E Dubai mare E Classic, whose first foal is the stakes-placed E Rated. Champion sprinter Housebuster is in the colt's extended family, along with Grade 2 winners Something Extra and Nicole H. Wavertree Stables consigns the colt, as agent.

Five horses tied for the co-fastest time at an eighth of a mile on Friday, each breezing in :10 flat:

Hip 389, a Twirling Candy filly out of the placed More Than Ready mare Apple Cider, whose two foals to race are both winners. Grade 2 winners Hangover Kid and Who Did It And Run are in the family of this Maryland-bred, who is offered as property of Grassroots Training and Sales.
Hip 400, a Maclean's Music filly out of the placed Afternoon Deelites mare Ava G, whose four foals to race are all winners, including stakes winner Miss My Rose. Grade 2 winner Minstrel Miss is the fourth dam of this filly, who is consigned by Scanlon Training and Sales, agent.
Hip 505, a Pennsylvania-bred Fed Biz filly out of the unraced Awesome Again mare Dream Realized, who is the dam of four winners from six runners. Crane Thoroughbred Services consigns the filly, as agent.
Hip 518, a first-crop Frosted filly out of the stakes-placed Bluegrass Cat mare Enchante, whose first foal to race is a winner. SBM Training and Sales, agent, handles the filly, whose page includes champion Forty Niner.
Hip 552, a Dialed In filly out of the winning Menifee mare Fall Fantasy, who is the dam of eight runners and six winners. The filly is a full-sister to Chalon, a stakes winner and runner-up in the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint.
