Washington Stallion Season Auction Takes Place Through December 22

The Washington Thoroughbred Breeders and Owners Association's fourth annual online stallion season auction begins on Wednesday, Dec. 15, and runs through Wednesday, Dec. 22.

In addition to stallion premiums, this year the WTBOA has added a chance for bidders to receive a bonus. All winning bidders will now be eligible for one of two bonus level amounts, as they will be entered into a drawing to receive a credit of up to $1,000 or the actual bid amount, whichever is less, on their stallion season purchase. The second drawing will be for a $400 bonus.

In addition, it is expected that a $7,500 or greater bonus will be available for all progeny of stallions whose seasons sold for the 2022 breeding season. The bonuses will be part of two 3-year-old stakes to be run at Emerald Downs during their 2026 racing season.

Over 90 seasons will be offered for the 2022 breeding season with many attractive proven and fledgling stallions offered. Among those listed are stallions standing in Kentucky, New York, Florida, California, Washington, Oregon, British Columbia and New Mexico.

Donations from farms large and small once again prove how generous the Thoroughbred industry can be. Just to name a few of the stellar stallions represented are American Freedom, Army Mule, Coast Guard, Conveyance, Country House, Cross Traffic, Curlin to Mischief, Disco Partner, Faversham, First Dude, Gio Ponti, Graydar, Keen Ice, Karakontie, Lea,  Majestic City, Ministers Wild Cat,  Protonico, Sir Prancealot, Skipshot,  Smiling Tiger, Speightster, Tapiture and Tapwrit.

Emerald Downs Announces Claiming Bonuses For 2022

Emerald Downs in Auburn, Wash. has announced a new incentive program for its 52-day race meeting in 2022.

Beginning with opening day May 15, 2022, all 3-year-olds and older that ran in any claiming race at least once at any track—including Emerald Downs—since Jan. 1, 2021, receive a $1,000 bonus ($750 to the horse owner, $250 to the trainer) in the horse's first start in any claiming race at Emerald Downs which must occur before July 1, 2022.

“It's important to extend bonuses to all horses,” track president Phil Ziegler said. “We appreciate shippers, of course, but we also recognize that some of our owners and trainers race exclusively at Emerald Downs. This bonus money helps offset their off-season expenses. For the horses that go out of state in the off season, this helps with the expense of bringing them back to Emerald Downs.”

Emerald Downs recently announced a 10 percent purse increase for the 2022 meeting—the track's second 10 percent increase since 2019.

Emerald Downs also announced other incentives for 2022:

• Initial stall bedding will be provided for all horses arriving prior to starting day.

• All hot walkers will be free throughout the season.

• Participation money on any race that has eight or more starters increased to $300 (horses finishing sixth through last).

“We recognize the economic demands of owners and trainers,” Ziegler said. “Thoroughbred racing is exhilarating and exciting, but the cost of doing business is a difficult obstacle. Higher purses and less expenses are extremely important.”

Opening day for Emerald Downs' 52-day meeting is Sunday, May 15. The stable area opens in March. The stakes schedule, featuring the 87th running of the Longacres Mile (G3), will be released in December.

Purse Increase At Emerald For 2022

Emerald Downs will raise overnight purses by 10% for the 2022 racing season, the second consecutive year for such an increase.

After not being able to attend the races in 2020, fans have returned to the Emerald grandstand this year and revenues have exceeded expectations.

“Our race fans came out to enjoy the beautiful weather, great racing, and popular promotions,” said track president Phil Ziegler. “Revenue from admissions, food & beverages, and wagering were all better than projected. That enables us to put more money towards purses in 2022.”

The announcement comes on the heels of a meeting between track officials and representatives from both horsemen and breeders' groups. The purse for the track's marquee event, the GIII Longacres Mile S., will be bumped to $150,000, a $50,000 increase from its two most recent runnings. The shipping bonus will also return.

The Emerald backstretch is scheduled to open at the beginning of March. More details on the 2022 season and stall applications will be available later this fall.

Three other colts brought a price of $40,000 or more, including the second highest offering, another colt by the late Harbor the Gold out of 2015 Washington broodmare of the year Bahati. Consigned by the partnership of Pam and Neal Christopherson's Bar C Racing Stable and Melodie Bultena and Doak Walker's Desert Rose Racing, the full brother to a trio of Washington champions was purchased by Gerald Schneider's Riverbend Farm for $45,000.

In addition, the mare's half-sister produced two-time Washington champion Risque's Legacy, by Atta Boy Roy.

A trio of fillies brought the next highest bids for a yearling distaffer. El Dorado Farms consigned a daughter of Coast Guard, a half-sister to 2020 co-Washington champion 2-year-old Dutton, which was purchased by Midwest trainer Valorie Lund, who trained the other half of the 2020 juvenile championship Bodenheimer.

California trainer Ed Moger went to $30,000 to buy a filly by sprint champion Runhappy out of $417,415 stakes winner Nuffsaid Nuffsaid from the Champion Sales consignment.

Chad Christensen, Emerald Downs' leading owner in 2019 and 2020, bid at the same level to acquire a Harbor the Gold half-sister to 2021 Santa Anita stakes winner Big City Lights. She was also consigned by Bar C Racing Stables.

Preliminary results show after 13 RNAs, 79 yearlings sold for a $1,079,000 gross (up 12.52 percent),  a $13,190 average (up 12.78 percent) and a $10,000 median (up 42.86 percent).

Oregon resident Connie Erickson offered the highest broodmare bid, taking home nine-year-old stakes-placed Grand Yodeler, bred to  Smiling Tiger, for $3,500. Grand Yodeler's colt by Smiling Tiger topped the 2020 WTBOA Sale. The chestnut mare also hails from the Champion Sales consignment.
