Cal-Breds Mucho Unusual, Warren’s Showtime Headline Saturday’s Buena Vista Stakes

A pair of talented California-breds, Mucho Unusual and Warren's Showtime, head a competitive field of 10 older fillies and mares in Saturday's Grade 2, $200,000 Buena Vista Stakes, to be contested at one mile over the Santa Anita turf.

Add in recent Grade 3 winner Charmaine's Mia, Grade 1 winner Red Lark and hard-knocking Going to Vegas, and the Buena Vista, which was first won by the late Julio Canani's Davie's Lamb with Fernando Toro up in 1988, shapes up as a terrific betting race.

Owned and bred by George Krikorian and trained by Tim Yakteen, Mucho Unusual seeks her third consecutive graded stakes victory at the current meeting. A winner of the Grade 3 Robert J. Frankel at a mile and one eighth on turf Dec. 27, she again stalked the early pace and registered a three quarter length victory at 2-5 in the Grade 3 Megahertz at one mile on turf Jan. 18.

A 5-year-old California-bred mare by Mucho Macho Man, out of the Unusual Heat mare Not Unusual, Mucho Unusual will be ridden by Abel Cedillo, as Joel Rosario is away to ride in Saudi Arabia. With four wins from eight tries at a mile on turf, Mucho Unusual is 19-7-3-4 overall with earnings of $822,715.

Third in a pair of ungraded turf stakes at the meet, the one mile Lady of Shamrock on Dec. 26 and the six furlong Sunshine Millions Filly & Mare Turf Sprint Jan. 16, Warren's Showtime looms a huge threat as she gets back to what looks to be her preferred distance for trainer Craig Lewis. Although beaten 3 ¾ lengths as the 6-5 favorite Jan. 16, she found her best stride late in a race that appeared to short for her.

Bred by Benjamin Warren, who owns the 4-year-old filly by Clubhouse Ride out of Warren's Veneda, by Affirmative with his wife Sally, Warren's Showtime has ample class and would benefit from a hot pace with Juan Hernandez back aboard. A winner of five out of her nine one mile turf assignments, Warren's Showtime is 16-6-1-7 overall with earnings of $569,431.

A 5-year-old Kentucky-bred mare by top sprinter The Factor, Agave Racing Stable's Charmaine's Mia came to play in her Southern California debut on Jan. 9, as she controlled the pace en route to a huge 2 ½ length win in the Grade 3 Las Cienegas Stakes at six furlongs on turf while dismissed at 16-1. Previously headquartered at Woodbine Racecourse in Toronto, she registered a lofty 98 Beyer Speed figure in her first start for Phil D'Amato, who approached the Las Cienegas with a steady diet of drills on Santa Anita's inner dirt training track.

Although ridden in the Las Cienegas by Drayden Van Dyke, she'll be handled by Flavien Prat on Saturday, as Van Dyke will stick with the Paddy Gallagher-trained Red Lark.

A winner of the Grade 1 Del Mar Oaks at a mile and one eighth on turf three starts back on Aug. 22, Irish-bred Red Lark was then a close fourth in the Grade 1 Queen Elizabeth II at Keeneland Oct. 10 and was most recently fourth, beaten 2 ¾ lengths in the Grade 1 American Oaks at a mile and one quarter on grass here Dec. 26. Owned by Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners, 4-year-old Red Lark has a second place finish from two tries at one mile on turf and is one of several who need a fast pace as she cuts back in distance a quarter mile.

Idle since second, beaten two lengths at 14-1 in the Grade 1 American Oaks Dec. 26, the Richard Baltas-trained Going to Vegas has been second in her last four starts, the last three all graded stakes. Like Red Lark, Going to Vegas will be shortening up a quarter mile, but with a one mile turf resume that reads 9-3-3-2, she could certainly make her presence felt with regular rider Mario Gutierrez up. Owned by Harry Bederian, Harout Kamberian, Hagop Nakkashian and Richard Baltas, Going to Vegas, a 4-year-old filly by Goldencents, was claimed for $50,000 seven starts back on June 12 and has been off the board just once in six subsequent races.

From Teenage Years With Hirsch Jacobs To 1,000-Win Milestone, Lewis ‘Fortunate’ And ‘Grateful

Craig Lewis did a little bit of celebrating Saturday night after Warren's Showtime won Saturday's Grade 3 Autumn Miss Stakes at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, Calif., to give the 73-year-old trainer career victory No. 1,000.

He watched a baseball game and a boxing match on TV, then it was business as usual and he was back on the beat early Sunday morning.

“I stayed up till 10 o'clock,” said Los Angeles native Lewis, who began training in 1978 and who holds a bachelor's degree in history from Cal Berkeley.

“I was a little disappointed early yesterday when we ran second with the first two horses I ran (Warrens Candy Man in the first race and Dancing Dana in the fourth), but I guess we won the one that mattered and it kind of worked out well.”

Lewis started in racing as a teenager, learning the ropes under legendary Hall of Fame trainer Hirsch Jacobs, who claimed the iron horse Stymie for $1,500 as a 2-year-old. Stymie would go on to run in an amazing 135 races, winning 35 and also earn Hall of Fame recognition.

Not only did Lewis win a graded stakes for his milestone victory, he trained both the sire (Clubhouse Ride) and the dam (Warren's Veneda) of Warren's Showtime, both multiple stakes winners in their own right.

“I've been very fortunate,” Lewis said after the victory. “I've had a lot of great horses in my career. Cutlass Reality beat back to back Derby winners Alysheba and Ferdinand in the (1988) Hollywood Gold Cup, Music Merci, winner of the (1988) Del Mar Futurity and (1989) Illinois Derby, and many other big races, and of course Larry the Legend (game winner of the 1995 Santa Anita Derby).

“I've had multiple other good horses and a lot of great owners. I'm very thankful and feel very fortunate, very grateful, to be in this situation.”

Said winning owner/breeder Benjamin Warren: “This is just wonderful and it's great that this is Craig's 1,000th win. This puts her at $500,000 in earnings at age three and that's pretty good. … I went partners with (former Major League baseball star) Irv Noren on my first horse in 1980, so to have this filly doing this well is tremendous.”

Warren's Showtime was fifth of seven early in the Autumn Miss but responded to strong urging by Flavien Prat to win by a neck as the 7-10 favorite. Victory didn't come easy.

“What was going through my mind was she might not get there,” Lewis admitted. “But as usual she did not disappoint. She's really a genuine filly who gives it every time.”

That usually results in a happy ending, none so happy as yesterday.

Prat Takes Over On Warren’s Showtime For Autumn Miss Stakes

A four-time stakes winner in search of her first graded victory, California-bred Warren's Showtime heads a field of seven sophomore fillies going one mile on turf in Saturday's Grade 3, $100,000 Autumn Miss Stakes at Santa Anita in Arcadia, Calif.

Owned by Ben and Sally Warren and bred by Ben Warren, Warren's Showtime is trained by Craig Lewis and is by red-hot sire Clubhouse Ride, out of the Warrens' G1-winning Warren's Veneda.  Most recently a close third in the G1 Del Mar Oaks, Warren's Showtime is the leading money earner in the field with $460,251.

The Jeff Mullins-trained Croughavouke, a sharp recent one mile turf allowance winner, the Simon Callaghan-trained Mind Out, who fetched $850,000 as a yearling, Leonard Powell's French-bred Guitty, who faced colts in the Del Mar Derby and midwestern invader Nasty, who will be making her first start for Richard Baltas, all would appear to have legitimate chances.

WARREN'S SHOWTIME
Owner:  Ben & Sally Warren
Trainer:  Craig Lewis
Most recently third, beaten 1 1/2 lengths going a mile and one eighth on turf in the G1 Del Mar Oaks Aug. 22, she has been a gem of consistency for her connections, winning three times from seven starts this year while third on three occasions and banking $333,980.  In the Oaks at Del Mar, she appeared to have the race in hand under Mike Smith as she made the lead and opened up by one length a furlong out but may have lost her focus late.  Ridden in her 11 previous tries by Jorge Velez, she'll get the first-time services of Flavien Prat and will get back to what may be a preferred distance, as she's four for seven at a mile on turf.  With three wins from four tries over the Santa Anita grass, she's 12-5-0-5 overall.

CROUGHAVOUKE
Owner:  Red Baron's Barn & Rancho Temescal, LLC
Trainer:  Jeff Mullins
Highly regarded by Mullins since her arrival from her native Ireland late last year, she's placed in a total of four turf stakes in nine Southern California starts, including a close third in the G3, mile and one eighth Honeymoon three starts back on May 30.  Closer to the pace in her one mile turf allowance score on Aug. 29 at Del Mar, she rolled to an impressive three quarter length win as the 2-1 favorite under Umberto Rispoli, who rides back in the Autumn Miss. With an overall mark of 11-2-3-2, Croughavouke seeks her first graded stakes victory on Saturday.

MIND OUT
Owner:  Gainesway Stable, LNJ Foxwoods & Andrew Rosen
Trainer:  Simon Callaghan
Most recently fourth, beaten three lengths by loose on the lead winner BulletproofOne in the 5 1/2-furlong turf Unzip Me Stakes, this chestnut daughter of Tapit is better suited at one mile on turf and figures to run a huge race on Saturday.  A close third to Warren's Showtime in her second career start, the one mile turf Surfer Girl Stakes five starts back on Oct. 6, 2019, Mind Out has the class and running style to spring a mild upset.  She'll be ridden for the first time by Drayden Van Dyke.

GUITTY
Owner:  Benowitz Family Trust, Madaket Stables, LLC, M. Mathiesen & M. Powell
Trainer:  Leonard Powell
A deep closer at any distance, she was far back early going a mile and one eighth on turf in the G2 Del Mar Derby Sept. 6 and finished well to be beaten 5 1/4 lengths.  An even seventh two back in the G1 Del Mar Oaks at the same distance Aug. 22, she flew late to be second, beaten three quarter of a length in the G2 San Clemente at one mile on turf July 25.  With two wins, both at a mile on turf, from 10 overall starts, Guitty will hope to be rolling from off the pace with top jock Juan Hernandez engaged.

NASTY
Owner:  LNJ Foxwoods
Trainer:  Richard Baltas
Most recently well beaten as the 7-2 favorite in an ungraded one mile turf stakes running over a yielding course at Indiana Grand Aug. 12, this Kentucky-bred filly by Street Sense had pressed the pace in two previous 1 1/16-mile turf races at Indiana, breaking her maiden by eight lengths on June 18 and taking a second condition allowance by one length on July 13 while favored on both occasions.  Previously trained by Brad Cox, she has two wins from five starts and will debut for Baltas while ridden for the first time by Ricky Gonzalez.  Out of the Lion Heart mare Valiant Passion, Nasty was purchased for $230,000 as a Keeneland September Yearling.
