NYTB Stallion Season Auction Set for Feb. 6-8

New York Thoroughbred Breeders, Inc. (NYTB) will conduct its annual Stallion Season Auction from Tuesday, Feb. 6 to Thursday, Feb. 8 on Wanamakers.com.

The annual auction raises funds that allow the NYTB to carry on its two-fold mission of promoting New York breeding and racing and protecting the welfare of industry stakeholders.

The auction has routinely attracted donated seasons from farms in the Empire State and Kentucky, including McMahon of Saratoga Thoroughbreds, Sequel New York, Irish Hill & Dutchess Views Stallions, Rockridge Stud, Coolmore America, Lane's End, Darley America, Darby Dan Farm, and additional farms.

“We're extremely proud of the widespread participation and diverse quality of stallions standing in New York state and the Commonwealth of Kentucky for breeders to appropriately match their mare,” said New York Thoroughbred Breeders Executive Director Najja Thompson.

New York-bred program stakeholders receive more than $60 million distributed in purse money, breeding incentives, and awards for New York-breds eligible to compete in more than 600 New York-bred races run annually on the New York Racing Association circuit and Finger Lakes Gaming & Racetrack.

Visit nytbreeders.org to view the most current list of stallions in the auction. Contact NYTB directly at 518.587.0777 or info@nytbreeders.org to donate a season.

Wanamaker’s PA-Bred Sale Catalogue Available

The catalogue for the third annual Wanamaker's Pennsylvania-Bred Sale, featuring 33 offerings and held in conjunction with the Pennsylvania Horse Breeders Association, is now available for viewing at wanamakers.com. The catalogue contains yearlings, in-foal broodmares and other horses of all ages.

Bidding opens Sunday, Jan. 7 at 9 a.m. ET and will conclude Thursday, Jan. 11 with the first listing set to close at 5 p.m. ET. The subsequent listings will close in three-minute intervals thereafter.

The past PA-bred sales conducted by Wanamaker's have produced horses of racing age that have gone on to exceed their purchase price. Dixie Cannonball (Paynter), a $5,500 graduate of the 2023 sale, has since gone on to win three races.

Among the highlights of this year's catalogue are 11 yearlings by leading fifth-crop sire Winchill and eight horses consigned by Steve Young, including four mares in foal to Peace and Justice (War Front).

“We are delighted by the continued enthusiastic response to our third annual PA-Bred Sale,” remarked Wanamaker's CEO Liza Hendriks. “This sale provides an excellent platform for local owners and breeders to showcase their horses in a state with a robust program, particularly in anticipation of the upcoming PA-Sired PA-Bred Stallion Series for 2-year-olds in 2024 and 3-year-olds in 2025.”

Wanamaker’s Online October Sale Records Second Highest Individual Sale

At the conclusion of the Wanamaker's October Sale, a total of 26 horses went through the digital ring for a gross of $397,750, which included the site's second highest priced horse sold, the online auction said in a release late Thursday.

Offered by trainer Michael Merryman on behalf of The Orebanks, the topper was Bandonarun (Uncle Lino) (hip 48), who went to Bradley Weisbord for $300,000, on behalf of Everett Dosbon.

“I am excited to buy her for the Dobson family. We have not bought many for Everett over the years, but we had some early success buying proven runners that went on to win stakes”, said Weisbord.

“We are thrilled with the sale of Bandonarun for an impressive $330,000, the second-highest priced horse we have sold,” said Wanamaker's CEO Liza Hendriks. “As we move forward, Wanamaker's is committed to pioneering the future of Thoroughbred auctions in the digital age, connecting buyers and sellers from around the country in an innovative and efficient manner.”

The next Wanamaker's mixed sale will occur on Nov. 30, with entries closing on Nov. 20 and the catalogue released on Nov. 22.
